Once again, Shoreline's Design + Build company Irons Brothers Construction will help kids build cedar birdhouses at the Kid’s Build-A-Birdhouse Event at the Shoreline Farmers Market Kid's Day on Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 10am - 2pm!

Bring the kiddos to our booth and we’ll provide the tools, materials, and skilled carpenters to help them build their own birdhouse – on us!

Since 2017, IronsBC has been building birdhouses with kids at various Shoreline community events. With help from our entire team and material donations from Dunn Lumber, we have built over 1300 birdhouses!

This hands-on experience exposes them to manual arts, working side-by-side with an IronsBC carpenter to build a custom home for our feathered friends.

IronsBC is committed to enriching the lives of our community through caring and craftsmanship. We encourage children to engage in the manual arts at an early age. Exposure to carpentry and building in a safe and supervised environment can be fun and educational.

To learn how to build your very own birdhouse at home, please visit our Education Page online for instructions and watch our how-to video!

Veterans booth at Shoreline Farmers Market displayed engraved bricks honoring veterans at the Recognition Plaza

Veteerans bricks at the Shoreline Farmers Market

Story and photos by Doug Cerretti

The Shoreline Veterans Association (SVA) sponsored a booth at the Shoreline Farmer Market this past Saturday, June 29 to display engraved bricks that are installed at the Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza to honor veterans.

For a donation of $100 (tax deductible) an engraved brick will be placed in the Plaza to honor a past, present or future veteran.

It is a joy meeting people at the Market and telling them about the Plaza and how they can honor a veteran. What I am amazed at is how many people have visited Shoreline City Hall but have not seen the Plaza???

Veterans RecognitionPlaza at City Hall
This was hard to fathom but it may be that people have not seen the Plaza because you enter City Hall from the east and west.

The Plaza is on the northside of City Hall at the base of the flag pole flying the American Flag.

I would suggest the next time you visit City Hall or if you are in the vicinity, visit the Plaza.

There are five benches where you can sit, relax and contemplate the names engraved on the bricks.

To paraphrase, “If only the Bricks could talk.”

There is a brick honoring WWII veteran Dwight Stevens, who piloted a B-17 for 33 combat missions at the ripe old age of 20.

Dwight honored 14 family members with engraved bricks at the Plaza including J Dwight Stevens, Union Army, 1862 to 1863. Think of the stories these bricks tell.

Three bricks honor veterans who paid the ultimate price in WWII.

Starr Sutherland, Jr., namesake of The American Legion Post 227 in Shoreline,

Alfred Turgeon whose remains were identified 78 years after his death, and Ralph Henry Keil who perished 12 minutes after WWII came to the United States December 7, 1941.

Think of the stories.

On rare occasions the SVA will honor non-veterans who served veterans. Mother and daughter, Barbara Alvarez and Bessie Bellecourt served in the USO and Avis Schwab served as a Donut Dolly in Vietnam

Please visit the Plaza and think about the stories behind the engraved bricks and consider having a brick installed at the Plaza to honor a veteran past, present or future in your family so that the Plaza can tell new stories.

The SVA will again be at Shoreline Farmers Market July 20 and August 17. Come visit us.

The Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza is on the north-side of Shoreline City Hall located at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Engraved Bricks can be purchased here. You can order engraved bricks online or an order form can be printed, fill out and mailed with a check or credit card number. Questions: call 206-546-9603 and leave a message.

Shoreline Farmers Market is held from 10am to 2pm Saturdays: June 1 - Oct 5, Harvest Oct 26 + Dec 14 at Shoreline Park & Ride, 18821 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA (192nd St N & Aurora Ave N).

Farmers Market closes early because of lightning

Saturday, June 15, 2024

Wild weather shut down outdoor events on Saturday

SFM is closing NOW due to inclement weather and lightning. Thank you to everyone who came out for our second annual  pride celebration

We'll have plenty of goodies to give away for the rest of the month for those who didn't have a chance to celebrate with us

I'm pretty sure that the Edmonds Arts Festival outdoor exhibits went diving for cover as well. That was some wild weather we had!

The first lightning / thunder was dramatic enough, with rain suddenly pouring from the sky as if someone pulled the plug. And then it stopped.

I had an appointment and left the house just as the second strike happened. I swear it was right over my head. I didn't see the lightning but I heard it crack. There was enough time to get to the car before the hail came down, bouncing on the windshield.

Water was sheeting down the street.

It was altogether too dramatic for my taste.

The blue skies returned. Photo by Jan Hansen

Half an hour late - blue skies.

Planning outdoor events is always a challenge around here. But at least we don't have to water the plants.

Shoreline Farmers Market to host Second Annual Shoreline Pride Celebration on Saturday, June 15, 2024

Tuesday, June 11, 2024

The Shoreline Farmers Market (SFM) is thrilled to announce the second annual Celebrate Pride in Shoreline event on Saturday, June 15th. This vibrant and inclusive event in the heart of Shoreline will be a joyous acknowledgment of love, diversity, and equality.

Featuring several local artists, this year’s Pride celebration builds on the success of the inaugural 2023 event. Emmy-nominated entertainer, writer and activist Sasha Scarlett will MC the day's activities.

Assigned Gay at Band (AGAB), an all-Queer marching band, will perform two sets. Cody James Megargee, a Shoreline-based queer, trans and disabled visual artist, will showcase his commissioned Celebrate Pride poster art, which will be available for sale with a portion of the proceeds going to Lambert House. Alethea Myers of the Face Paintery will offer colorful designs for attendees.

This year, the SFM has formed a dedicated steering committee to shape the Pride celebration, ensuring it embodies a spirit of inclusiveness. Composed of community members, market vendors, and local leaders, the committee has worked tirelessly to create an event that everyone can enjoy.

“As an openly gay resident and Shoreline business owner, I’m proud to be a board member of the Shoreline Farmers Market and especially to be involved in the Pride event,” said Zephyr Paquette, steering committee member and the owner of Le Petit Paquet in Richmond Beach.
“The Market brings together an array of diversity, includes all, and is working very specifically on fighting food insecurity.”

Attendees are invited to visit their favorite farmers and makers, connect with their neighbors, and enjoy the Pride lounge. Key resources from local organizations will be on hand for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, their loved ones, and the community at large.

“I was fortunate to participate in the first Shoreline Farmers Market Pride in 2023. Seeing all the shoppers sporting their rainbows and flags was wonderful.” said owner of Alluria Candles and Pride Steering Committee member Sarah Fletcher.
“As an out and proud vendor, I appreciate the welcoming environment that the market offers its queer vendors. Wishing everyone a very happy Pride in 2024, remember to shop local and support your queer creators.”

A grassroots 501(c)(3) organization, the Shoreline Farmers Market has partnered with the City of Shoreline and the Port of Seattle to present this event.

"While we have come a long way since Stonewall, we know there is still work to do," stated Shoreline Mayor Chris Roberts. "That is why celebrating Pride is so important. No one should be fearful of being who they are. I am proud to live in a community that celebrates its diversity, and I am proud to be an LGBTQ+ ally."

The Pride Celebration at the Shoreline Farmers Market will take place on June 15, 2024, from 10am to 2pm. The market is conveniently located at 18821 Aurora Avenue N, across from the YMCA and Sky Nursery. Walk, bike, bus, or drive and park. This event is wheelchair accessible.

Open to the public. Free admission. All are encouraged to attend and show their support for equality and inclusivity. Festive dress encouraged.
