2023 Dahlia Show August 12-13, 2023 at Sky Nursery

Sunday, July 23, 2023

It's a perfect summer for dahlias this year. Plenty of sun since mid-June, so if gardeners paid attention to regular watering, the flowers should be in bloom by now.

Note: Our annual dahlia show (the continent's largest!) takes place earlier than in the past. That change was made because the American Dahlia Society's National Show takes place in Portland, OR at our usual show weekend.

The show will take place over two days at Sky Nursery 18528 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133
  • Saturday August 12, 2023 - 9am to 6pm
  • Sunday, August 13, 2023 - 9am to 4pm

The dahlia exhibition of the Puget Sound Dahlia Association and the Seattle Dahlia Society regularly attracts many dahlia enthusiasts from across the country and from abroad.

The Sky Nursery provides a perfect display space with much natural light for our favorite flower, and the nursery now has created a lovely backdrop for selfies or family photos.

There is no charge for show visitors.

A weekend full of events - if you can get to them

WSDOT "paint map"

Just in case you haven't heard (and where have you been if you haven't?) Taylor Swift is coming to Seattle this weekend for a pair of concerts Saturday and Sunday night at Lumen Field.

But she's far from the only show (or game) in town. We've got the Bite of Seattle, NHRA Northwest Nationals, Capitol Hill Block Party, Seattle Chinatown Seafair Parade and Dude Perfect Pandamonium Tour all going on this weekend, and that's not to mention home games for the Seattle Mariners and Storm.

And don't forget about the Darrington Bluegrass Festival and a host of other events around the state.

WSDOT traffic map

If that weren't enough, we have some construction and maintenance projects that you should know about before heading out the door no matter where your travels take you.

Check out these Paint Maps for a rundown of all this weekend's big goings on, and make sure you know before you go by following our Travel Center Map and WSDOT Traffic Twitter account.

Sand sculptures at Edmonds beach

Thursday, July 20, 2023

Sea horse

The annual sand-sculpting contest sponsored by the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce Foundation brought out local talent to create art in the sand.

An elegantly decorated shark

There were adult and child categories - but Lee Lageschulte reviewed the entries and picked out her favorites.

Mermaids are always popular

Fortifications

If there were a Charm category, the next two would be top contenders.

Not sure about the first one but this has got to be a hippo.

No matter who won and who didn't, it was a lovely day to play in the sand at the beach.

Perfect weather for Swingin' Summer Eve at Cromwell Park

The Lago Vista Social Club entertained the crowd

All photos by Steven H. Robinson

The weather cooperated beautifully for Swingin' Summer Eve on Wednesday night, July 19, 2023 at Cromwell Park in Shoreline.

Crowds relaxed on the grass

Crowds were able to relax on the grass to listen to the Lago Vista Social Club after they got their dinner from one of the food trucks or booths.

Three different inflatables

Inflatables were there for the kids and young at heart, including a giant piece of machinery alongside the slide and bouncy castle.

ShoreLake Arts helped kids make block prints

ShoreLake Arts had cool art projects for the kids, like these block prints.

Food trucks and a seafood grill for dinner in the park

There were food trucks, booths, and popsicle stands so attendees could get their dinner and treats at the park.

The thrill of sitting behind the wheel of a giant fire truck!

Always popular, police and fire were there giving kids tours of the fire truck, showing them police cars and answering questions.

Swingin' Summer Eve is an annual event of the City of Shoreline.

BrickCon at the Meydenbauer Center September 9-10, 2023

Saturday, July 1, 2023

All made from Legos. Photos courtesy BrickCon

BrickCon is back! As the premier Lego convention of the Pacific Northwest, every year BrickCon welcomes over 450 convention attendees that create over 1000 amazing Lego exhibits.

This year will mark the 22nd BrickCon, and we are excited to welcome convention attendees from all over the world and the masses of public visitors who want to be a part of the fun.

Traditionally, the annual event is held the first week of October at the Seattle Center. However, BrickCon has grown so large that more space is needed to accommodate all the exhibits, attendees, vendors, activities and members of the public.

This year’s convention is at a new location and date – the Meydenbauer Center September 9 - 10, 2023. 11100 NE 6th St, Bellevue, WA 98004

"We're eager to see what this new space can do," said Steve Walker, executive director of BrickCon.
"There will be more space for the exhibits, vendors and the public. All that amounts to a more comfortable experience for everyone. We're excited to be in the Bellevue area. The community has been very welcoming to us, and it should be a blast.”

Strawberry Festival: Food and Activities for All this Saturday

Thursday, May 4, 2023

2014 parade photo by Bob Pfeifer - they are now Shorewood students
By Katie McNeil

The annual Richmond Beach Strawberry Festival returns this Saturday, May 6, 2023.

You’ve saved the date, now here’s what you have to look forward to.

From the children’s parade to live music, Strawberry Festival activities have one goal in mind — building community.

Bring your family and invite your neighbors to join us for a day of fun, food, and togetherness after four years apart.

Kids Activities

While parents enjoy strawberry shortcakes, kids can get wiggles out in the bounce houses, play carnival games, create a card with Beach House Greetings, blow bubbles, draw with chalk, and of course, play on the playground with friends.

The main event for our youngest attendees will be the Children’s Parade, starting at 11:45am and led by the Shorewood High School drumline.

Several children in the 2014 parade photo above are now Shorewood High School students, evidence of the strong ties the Richmond Beach community holds.

This year’s theme for the Children’s Parade is Rainbow! Dress in your favorite color and march the perimeter of the park together.

Music Lineup

It’s not a festival without music and Tom Petersen has lined up some great bands.

While you browse the booths of local businesses and grab some food truck grub, jam to four different bands playing everything from R/B and soul to honky tonk and classic rock.

Don’t miss Whey, a Shorewood High School neo-funk band, in their first-ever Strawberry Festival performance!

Fresh strawberries and whipped cream are piled
on top of fresh shortcakes from Edmonds Bakery.
Strawberry Shortcake

Whatever you munch on, save room for our traditional strawberry shortcake, a Strawberry Festival must!

The Richmond Beach Community Association serves up this treat as a nod to our neighborhood’s strawberry farm heritage.

Fresh strawberries and whipped cream are piled on top of fresh shortcakes from Edmonds Bakery.

Food Trucks

Be sure to come hungry because you’ll have plenty of options for food. Four food trucks will be serving everything from Indian to Mexican to Southern food.

Grab a street taco from Isidro’s, a paratha roll from Foody Moody, or an authentic po’boy from Where Ya At Matt.

Come Together after Covid

The RBCA’s mission is to build community. The annual Strawberry Festival is our signature event to do just that. We hope to see you and your neighbors there!

The Strawberry Festival will be held Saturday, May 6 from 12-5 pm at Richmond Beach Community Park, 2201 NW 197th St, Shoreline, WA 98177.

Please plan to walk or carpool to this popular event. If needed, overflow parking will be available at Syre Elementary, 19545 12th Ave NW, Shoreline WA 98177.

Plan for Fun at this Year’s Strawberry Festival

Saturday, April 15, 2023

Children’s Parade in 2014. Photo by Bob Pfeiffer

Plans are coming together for the annual Richmond Beach Strawberry Festival on Saturday, May 6, 2023!

This beloved annual event has been on hiatus during COVID and we are thrilled to bring back some traditions and create some new ones. For neighbors who have never attended the Strawberry Festival, expect an afternoon of live music, food trucks, kids activities, and of course, strawberry shortcake!

Children’s Rainbow Parade

This year’s theme for the Children’s Parade is Rainbow! Dress in your favorite color and march the perimeter of the park led by our very own Shorewood High School drumline. Start planning your costume and props for your wagon, scooter, tricycle, or stroller. (No bikes or pets, please.)

To participate, meet at the rainbow balloon arch on the west side of the park by the playground. Staging begins at 11:30am and the parade begins at 11:45am. The parade route is two laps around the path (parental support encouraged).

We can’t wait to see a rainbow of colors light up our event!

Live Music Lineup

Tom Petersen has lined up some great Seattle-based bands for the event that are sure to get you dancing. BroHamM is a funk, soul, R/B band made up of three brothers Larry, Curtis, and Len Hammond. Country Dave and the Pickin’ Crew’s honky tonk tunes will be followed by Commander Mojo, a classic 70s horn rock band. All three bands were lined up to play in the canceled 2020 Festival and we’re so happy to bring them back.

Rounding out the lineup will be Whey, a Shorewood High School neo-funk band that we can’t wait to see up on stage. Between sets, be sure to pop into the library for the Friends of Richmond Beach Library book sale!

These beloved community events can’t happen without you. Please consider sponsoring or volunteering to make the Strawberry Festival a success.

Destinations: Tulip Valley Farms debuts new field, garden, and unique experiences in Skagit Valley

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

Tulip Valley Farms debuts this spring, offering visitors two new fields and a myriad of ways to experience the region’s tulip bloom.

Located in the heart of Skagit Valley, Tulip Valley Farms is a collective of new farms and gardens, including an expansive 30-acre farm with views of Mount Baker and beautiful surrounding farmland.

It features 12 acres of tulips among hazelnut trees and between grass rows for a spacious park-like feel.

Tulip Valley Farms is also introducing Tulip Valley Gardens, a 9-acre farm with 2 acres of tulips right off of I-5 designed to provide a “taste” of the tulips, intimate events, and programs, minus the traffic.

Tulip Valley Farm and Tulip Valley Gardens will open April 1, 2023 bloom-pending, for the entire month giving locals and visitors many ways to enjoy the magic of mother nature and our rural, agricultural communities.

Tickets are on sale now at www.tulipvalley.com

“I wanted to create a space where individuality and community come together to create a living masterpiece of tulip bloom and creative abundance,” said Andrew Miller, CEO of Tulip Valley Farms.
“We developed new and innovative ways to attract more people to the region to celebrate this time of year with us, supporting our community of businesses and growers, and making it accessible to people who wouldn’t come because of traffic, perceived fit, or having enough reasons to make the trip. I had a vision for a ‘Magic Springdom,’ and that’s what we created.”
