Destinations: The return of CHOMP! - a major food festival in Redmond - Saturday, August 20, 2022

Contrary to popular opinion, CHOMP! is not this summer’s latest sequel to Jaws, Jurassic Park or even Little Shop of Horrors.

It is, in fact, a free, family-friendly, day-long event which focuses on sustainability, healthy food and social justice.

Even with these strong underpinnings, CHOMP! is a fun new kind of county fair highlighting local food production, green living, and recycling mixed with live music, food trucks and kids’ activities.

Now in its eighth year, CHOMP! celebrates all that is fresh, delicious, local, and sustainable in King County.

Taking place at Redmond’s Marymoor Park, 6046 W. Lake Sammamish Pkwy Redmond, WA 98052, the event supports King County Executive Dow Constantine’s Local Food Initiative.

The event highlights chefs and restaurants using locally sourced food; local organizations specializing in healthy and affordable foods; local farms and farmland support.

Over the past seven years CHOMP! has grown to an audience of more than 6,000 attendees and features a full day of free activities for the whole family.

Kiddos in the audience will have their own musical groups, live animals, zucchini races, wilderness awareness school, sustainable toys and clothing, and a scavenger hunt.
Adults can enjoy CHOMP’s farmers market, upscale bazaar, tree climbing, booths for sustainability organizations, ethnic food vendors and live concerts.

King County Master Gardeners will host their traditional Ask-A-Master-Gardener Booth where they’ll also feature hands-on gardening experiences for kids.

Gardening enthusiasts and newspaper readers will have opportunities to speak with local gardening columnist, Bruce Bennett – The Garden Guy.

This year’s Festival will be held Saturday, August 20, 10:00am to 6:00pm, at Marymoor Park in Redmond

For more information about CHOMP!, visit the group’s website at www.chomplocal.org

Help paint a new mural in Lake Forest Park at the Picnic in the Park Sept 10

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation, along with the City of Lake Forest Park, ShoreLake Arts, and Urban ArtWorks, is collaborating with 17-year-old high school artist Austin Picinich to paint a 188-ft-long ‘Save Our Salmon Mural” at Animal Acres Park.

The project is a “mural with a purpose” with the goal to raise awareness for salmon restoration in McAleer Creek. The mural will transform the gray concrete barricades above McAleer Creek’s culvert with a vibrant mural of kokanee salmon on both sides of NE 178th St, near Brookside Elementary.

For those who want to be involved, you’re in luck – because the LFP Stewardship Foundation and Urban ArtWorks will be hosting a Community Paint Day on September 10th for over 150 community volunteers to help paint the mural.

Artist Austin will outline his salmon design in “paint-by-number” format, so all you need is a steady hand and a little community spirit to participate.

Previous art experience is optional and kids and families are welcome to join the painting fun – but all volunteers must sign-up in advance here.

The Community Paint Day will be held in conjunction with the City of Lake Forest Park’s ‘Picnic in the Park’ event with food trucks, live music, and salmon-themed activities in the adjacent Animal Acres Park.

This isn’t artist Austin Picinich’s first mural – earlier this year in April Austin led a 100+ foot Save Our Salmon Mural at Juanita Creek in Kirkland.

He’s on a mission to bring more meaningful, interactive public art along more local streams. McAleer Creek is the perfect location with Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation’s kokanee restoration project working to begin restoring native runs in the next four years.

Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation is currently fundraising to cover costs of the project, including paint and mural supplies. You can donate to the mural’s GoFundMe here.

You can learn more at the mural’s website: https://www.austinsart.net/salmonmural/lfp

First place: Jamm

What an incredible turnout from the community! Over the course of three nights featuring amazing local musicians and performances, there were over a 1,000 guests who came out to support the bands and ShoreLake Arts. Thank you to all of you for making it a week to remember!

A concert, a competition, a community event for all age groups, a platform to nourish talent, this year's Battle of the Bands was all that and more. The highlights were many, including a beer garden sponsored by Monka Brewing Co., food trucks, and musician Q and A’s on stage with emcee Sasha Cousineau. Of course all of this was capped off with five wonderful performances by such talented local musicians. The future is bright!

Speaking of wonderful performances, the group of seven judges had the difficult task of selecting the winners. Scott Markley from Annex Room Studio presented the 1st place award.

Congratulations to Jamn!

And congratulations to the runner-up Rug! E. Pruitt and Jeannie Rak presented the second place award to this band who gave us a powerful performance. They left an everlasting impression in just 15 minutes. Their prize is $1,000 in cash and a performer’s gear package from Mackie including speakers, tripod stands and a pair of dynamic microphones.

Runner up: Rug

This year also included the People’s Choice Award where the audience voted for their favorite band - Stargazy Pie.

The award of $500 in cash and recording studio time at Robert lang Studios was presented by Jack Malek of Windermere. Thank you to all of our judges Robert Lang, Tina Lang, Scott Markley, E. Pruitt, Jesse Field, Alex Donka, and Jeannie Rak for all of their work bringing this event together and a special shout out to Aidan Gallagher, one of the stars in the Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, who stepped in as a guest judge on Tuesday night.

People's Choice award to Stargazy Pie

Thank you again to all of the participating bands this year! A big round of applause to Altigi, Snacks at Midnight, Cottage Corpse, Now or Ever, Souls Worn Thin, The Stillvettas and Alex Vile.

A wonderful day at the 2022 Old Dog Haven Festival

All photos by Wayne Pridemore

We had a truly wonderful day on July 16, 2022 at Cromwell Park in Shoreline!

Many thanks to our dedicated Board of Directors for organizing this amazing event and to all the volunteers, sponsors, donors and attendees who made it such a success.

We have not been able to gather (in person) to celebrate old dogs for two years and our Board wanted to put together something very special to honor our dogs and all our wonderful supporters.

Jimmy Buffett groupies!
They decided to change it up this first year back and have a Festival to celebrate being together and being able to provide homes for senior dogs in need.

The event was a tremendous success! We had nearly 500 people in attendance and far surpassed our fundraising goals.

"Pie" with companion Dawn Ford
Dawn owns The Barkery - a food truck for dogs
and created all the recipes for the treats

There were a variety of carnival games/events, tasty food trucks, lots of vendors with samples, an amazing silent auction, and a marvelous collection of old (and young) dogs and their humans.

"Penny' with her lick artwork tile

Our sincere thanks to all those who made this happen and all who attended to support old dogs!

2022 Brewfest cancelled

Statement from Brewfest organizers

We deeply regret that we will be cancelling the 4-Corners BrewFest 2022, postponing our 10th Annual Celebration for one more year.

Because of structural changes to businesses in general over the last couple of years, many of our beloved brewers are finding themselves in that widespread condition of being short-staffed, and either unable to participate this year, or stretched very thin.

In addition, our own volunteer support has been difficult to muster.

Our Brewfest is, in our opinion, the  best because brewers get great exposure to an audience they would not ordinarily meet.

They get real conversations with attendees rather than just serving a line. Attendees get a wide sampling of our amazing local brew offerings, face time with brewers, and a great outdoor afternoon in the most intimate BrewFest setting around. We are committed to that vision.

So, because we value both our brewers and our brewfesters, we will postpone one more year.

If you purchased a ticket, you will get a full refund. If you paid by credit card through Eventbrite, you will see those charges refunded to your card.

If you purchased through Beach House, we will contact you about how to return your check or where to send reimbursement if you paid cash.

Thank you all for your support and interest. We hope the world has shifted back into our favor next year, and we can celebrate together.
