Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics

Tuesday, June 14, 2022

The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® Campaign for Special Olympics Washington is to create awareness and excitement for Special Olympics and to encourage support and attendance of the State Spring Games.

The involvement of law enforcement at the Opening Ceremony is an important addition to the pageantry of the Games. Law enforcement’s role as “Guardians of the Flame” is apparent as officers from around the state join together to carry the “Flame of Hope” into the arena.

The 2022 Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg will take place from June 15-17 with runs across Washington State.

The torch will be in Shoreline Friday morning, June 17, 2022.

The route runs the length of Shoreline as Edmonds police officers meet Shoreline officers at the county line. The Shoreline group, which includes Kenmore, Lake Forest Park and others, will run with the torch and some athletes to the Seattle line where it will be handed off to Seattle PD.

Eventually, all will converge at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma to kick off the Special Olympics Washington State Spring Games on Friday evening, June 17.

The lighting of the cauldron from the torch marks the start of the Games and the beginning of competition for more than 2,000 athletes, Unified partners and coaches from across the state.

Law enforcement’s role in protecting the symbolism and integrity of this ceremony greatly enhances the experience of the athletes participating in the Games.

Northwest Folklife is back with Hybrid Festival

Saturday, April 9, 2022

SEATTLE, WA - After two years of virtual programming, Northwest Folklife in partnership with Seattle Center is excited to announce that it will officially be returning to in-person performances and events for its 51st Annual Festival on Memorial Day weekend May 27-30, 2022 at Seattle Center (campus map)

Each year, Northwest Folklife chooses a theme to embody the spirit of the festival. This year’s Cultural Focus is Metamorphosis: In with the Old, In with the New. In keeping with that spirit, the festival will be a hybrid event, with online and in-person programming available to be accessible to all. In addition, the festival will be exploring themes of transition, transformation, and growth: themes central to the folk lineage and process.

A Seattle institution for 50 years, Northwest Folklife has been building to this re-emergence with intentionality and with community safety in mind. Newly revised Covid-19 policies for the in-person programming and a full lineup online will ensure that the festival will be able to serve all of the community.

Of the return, Managing Director Reese Tanimura says, “We feel a huge responsibility to make sure our return to live programming keeps safety and community care at the forefront. We are excited to welcome the summer sharing our best folklife.”

“This festival signals not just a re-emergence, but also a growth.” says Benjamin Hunter, Artistic Director.

“Having been virtual for 2 years, this intentional pivot to hybrid means that we can finally come together again in person, with the realization that the virtual element provides an opportunity for folx who can’t and haven’t been able to attend in the past. I’m really excited at this opportunity to transition Folklife to a more accessible format!”

The 51st Annual Northwest Folklife Festival (May 27-30, 2022) will include programming that includes music, dance, spoken word, visual arts, films, cooking demonstrations, panel discussions, participatory dances, and workshops spanning 20 stages for an anticipated audience of over 200,000.

Northwest Folklife is an independent 501(c)(3) arts organization that celebrates a global Pacific Northwest's multigenerational arts, cultures, and traditions.

For over 50 years, Northwest Folklife has been deeply committed to celebrating the diversity of our Northwest communities and de-mystifying our differences together under one roof. Northwest Folklife believes that arts and culture strengthen communities and should be accessible for all.

Our year-round programming is produced in collaboration with over 120 different cultural partners and powered by contributions from the community, corporations, foundations, and the public sector. We are for the people, by the people.

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Tour is back in 2022

Friday, April 8, 2022

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park is back in 2022

All you know and love about the Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Tour will be back in 2022. During the Covid ‘drought’ and the seasonal winter months, gardeners and garden lovers have had to content themselves with snippets of garden humor to keep cheerful. Not anymore. One circulating in Facebook feeds is now celebrating the return to the loved customs of the past.

You know that tingly feeling you get when you enter a plant store? It’s the common sense leaving your body.

It is with enormous pleasure that we announce the opportunity for you to experience the common sense leaving your body. Purchase a ticket and it will happen June 18, 2022 when, in keeping with tradition of holding the event on Father’s Day weekend, the Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Tour will take place.

Some time at the Plant and Garden Art Market held at the Lake Forest Town Center will begin the tingly feeling. Those ‘hard to finds,’ ‘something whimsical,’ or even a replacement for a plant now composting will be there.

You can also take a chance in the raffle ticket and browse the garden art finds. Then it is off to go looking for ideas in other peoples’ gardens that will work in your own. The ones that won’t, will enchant anyway.

Six gardens are on the tour. Each is different from the others, and all are labors of love by the homeowners who developed them. They will work their magic as gardens do, and so will the artists and musicians who grace them. Visitors may take their time in happy contemplation.

On top of all those make-you-feel-good-things is the knowledge that the ticket, plant and art sale proceeds go to good causes. In part, the funds provide public art for the community. Check out one such work: Five by Five by local artist, Rodger Squirrell on the corner of Bothell Way and Ballinger Way. In its soft, rippling fashion, the sculpture soothes out the harsh lines of a shopping center and roads and yours in the process.

The tour also supports nonprofits that help give Lake Forest Park its heartbeat. Proceeds go toward the four local organizations that collaborate to put on the Tour: Third Place Commons, the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation, ShoreLake Arts and the Lake Forest Park Garden Club. With support the groups can put on a tour again next year.

We look forward to welcoming you to the tingly world of Lake Forest Park Gardens.

Tour Day/ Hours: June 18, 2022. 9:00am – 3.00pm
Purchase Tickets: Pre-Tickets available May 1 online at EventBrite.com
In Person: Wild Birds in LFP Town Center and Sky Nursery in Shoreline
Advance Purchase: $15.00
Day of Ticket Sales at the Door: $20.00

Making Space for Community at Third Place Commons

Tuesday, February 15, 2022

This week, Third Place Commons continues to explore the building blocks of community in the lead-up to the Rebuilding Community Annual Celebration and Fundraiser on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 5pm.

There are many factors that go into fostering a strong, vibrant community at any time, especially when rebuilding community that’s been fractured by the challenges of a global pandemic. So where do we start?

If building block #1 is Guiding Principles, then perhaps #2 would be an all-important gathering space.

Building Block #2: Gathering Space

For a community to grow strong, it needs the space in which to gather and build together.

At Third Place Commons, gathering space is a foundational element. The Commons space is always open for friends and family to visit, eat, read, listen to music, or plan important community initiatives. The stage and space are likewise available to partners for no-cost programming so that community can gather and engage through a wide range of live events when it’s safe to do so.

And, of course, Third Place Commons provides the space where neighbors and vendors connect and support each other at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market.

In addition, since the pandemic, the Commons has also provided a virtual space where community can safely stay connected through weekly and monthly groups and clubs as well as stand-alone special programs like city forums, go green programs, and Civic Saturdays.

How can you use the gathering spaces available to you to foster a stronger community?

Share your thoughts with friends, start a dialogue, and bring your ideas to the conversation for the Rebuilding Community event on March 5th.

Click here to get more information on the Rebuilding Community Annual Celebration and Fundraiser featuring the extraordinary Eric Liu as guest speaker.

And get your tickets here to show your support for this vital community space.

Third Place Commons – a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization – has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space with TPC At Home programs. Getting There

Steve Robinson says, "If people are interested in getting ready for spring garden ideas and plants this would be the place to go. I took Light rail from Northgate to downtown. It was a quick and inexpensive way. The only challenge is finding free parking at Northgate. If you get to the Park n Ride after 9:00am you may end up paying for Kraken Parking for uptown $2 for 6 or more hours."

Polar Bear Plunge 2022

Green Lake. Screenshot from YouTube video
By Diane Hettrick

The Polar Bear Plunge is an annual custom where intrepid swimmers run into local lakes on New Year's Day. There are usually gatherings at Edmonds, Green Lake, Magnussen Park, and Lake Washington.

The water is shallower but that means you are exposed to the elements longer
Photo by Lee Lageschulte at Edmonds Beach

It's said to be an invigorating experience in Puget Sound's normally mild winters.

With temperatures well below freezing for a week, the wind blowing, and snow on the ground, there was not as much enthusiasm this year.

In fact, I was only able to find a couple of 2022 plungers.

Green Lake. Screenshot from YouTube video

Green Lake had two young men who jumped off the dock and got right back out as quickly as possible.

Lee Lageschulte found one at the Edmonds Beach and half a dozen in wet suits, which I don't believe qualifies - at least not for bragging rights.

Lee and her husband Roger know how to dress for the Polar Beach Plunge.
