Four north-end cities partner for the Winter Porch Light Parade this December to celebrate communities shining bright

Wednesday, October 27, 2021

The cities of Bothell, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park and Shoreline have partnered to celebrate communities shining bright with the 2021 Winter Porch Light Parade December 1 through December 31, 2021.

These four cities invite their communities to create light displays that will become part of a virtual map, marking the many holidays and traditions celebrated during the winter season.

Participants are encouraged to get creative with their displays, including the type of spaces that can be decorated. From porches to patios, balconies to banisters, to windows or even cars, anyone can participate and see all four cities transform into a magical wonderland of lights!

“We look forward to seeing the creativity of our residents and businesses as they light up our darkest days of winter,” said Shoreline Mayor Will Hall. “The Winter Porch Light Parade brings north King County cities together in celebrating light, hope, and togetherness this year.”

Registration for light displays will be open from November 15 to December 19, and a map of light displays will be available for the entire month of December for community members to tour and enjoy.

“We are very excited to partner with our neighboring cities, to celebrate the season and shine bright in a safe and inclusive way,” said Jeff Johnson, Mayor of Lake Forest Park. “We could all use a little brightness during these times. It will be fun to see our communities come together in the first of many Winter Porch Light Parades!”

It is free to participate in the Winter Porch Light Parade, and there will be prizes for winners in the following three categories: Best Overall, Best Small Space, and Best LED Lights.

The Cascade Bicycle Club ran its annual Chilly Hilly bicycle ride on Sunday. Over a thousand bicyclists take this ride which follows Bainbridge Island's hills.

The route profile shows the hilly route

For most, it starts with a ferry ride from Seattle to Bainbridge. WSDOT warned drivers to consider alternate travel times or routes because the 7:55, 8:55 and 9:35am sailings out of Seattle, then all Bainbridge departures from 11:35am to 3pm would be filled with bicycles.

Shoreline Arts Festival returns June 26-27 in Lake Forest Park

Saturday, June 12, 2021

Shoreline Arts Festival
A Community Tradition; Creatively Adapted for 2021

Saturday and Sunday, June 26-27, 10am-5pm

It’s back! We're excited to announce that after months of careful planning and countless Zoom meetings, the 31st Annual Shoreline Arts Festival is a full go! And everything you need to know about the event is now live on our website. Yay!

This year is going to look a little different, but our number one priority is continuing to keep our community safe. We have implemented strict health and safety guidelines. Key changes: reserve a free ticket online for timed entry, sanitation stations throughout, social distancing, and our artist booth holders upholding the highest cleaning standards. Visit our COVID-19 page for more info.

Now, let's get back to celebrating arts and culture in our community at the 31st Annual Shoreline Arts Festival! Reserve your free ticket(s) today.

Event Highlights:

2021 Festival Map and Parking:

We have a new location this year! One of the biggest hurdles planning for this year has been figuring out where we will be. Our 2021 home will be at the beautifully secluded Pfingst Animal Acres Park in Lake Forest Park. Just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Shoreline!

This fenced-in park allows us to implement COVID safety controls this year. We'll be back at Shoreline Community College in 2022.

With a new location comes a new map, as well as parking options. Get to know the lay of the land by reviewing our festival map and parking locations before heading over.

Parking will be located at Brookside Elementary and LFP Presbyterian Church in the afternoons during Festival weekend.

Volunteer!

Our volunteers make this event possible. We need help with tasks before the event, set-up, during the event to break down.

There are over 60+ shifts that need to be filled during the event. All adapted for 2021 to ensure safe practices. Thank you!

The Shoreline Arts Festival is a program of ShoreLake Arts with support from, Shoreline Community College, Jack Malek of Windermere, City of Lake Forest Park, City of Shoreline Parks and Rec, Irons Brothers Construction, National Endowment for the Arts, Shoreline Music School, American Dance Institute, Washington State Arts Commission (ArtsWA), 4Culture, Recology, Central Market Shoreline, and Smith Brothers Farms!

Thank you to our donors and members!

Please feel free to contact our office with any questions or concerns. 206-417-4645 or info@shorelakearts.org

ShoreLake Arts is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate creativity and inspire our community through the arts. Established in 1989.

The Richmond Beach Celebration wraps up the month of May

Friday, May 28, 2021

By Teresa Pape
RBCA Executive Director

The Richmond Beach Celebration wraps up the month of May

Week 4: May 23-31, Get out and explore the community.

There are many ways you can get outside and explore the community not only this week but all though the summer.

Here are a few ideas:

Support the Richmond Beach Community Association
with a membership or donation and get a free sample tasting kit of smoked extra virgin olive oil from Richmond Beach’s own Cascade Fusion.

Find the RBCA tent on Saturday, May 29, near the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, starting at 10:00am and become a member for only $20. Limited quantities of tasting kits will be available.

The Shoreline Historical Museum Self-Guided Walking Tour:
take a self-guided tour of the old town of Richmond Beach with an updated map and location descriptions.

The tour is the result of a wonderful collaboration between the Richmond Beach Neighborhood Association (RBCA) and the Museum (SHM)!

Download the map from the SHM website at https://shorelinehistoricalmuseum.org/richmond-beach-walking-tour/ then follow along with a series of 35 recorded vignettes on the Richmond Beach YouTube channel, "RichmondBeachTV" describing each stop on the map, many with accompanying historical photos!

Expedition Richmond Beach: The last year has seen many of you spend more time walking around Richmond Beach. Some walkers tend to stay in their part of the neighborhood while others wander into the far corners of the community.

Ever wonder just how observant you have been (or can be) on your walks? The RBCA has posted pictures of a bunch of “interesting” spots in Richmond Beach ranging from garden art to weird stumps to secret paths to small streams you might have missed.

Richmond School 1891
The area was divided into four quadrants – northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast and organized the pictures into four albums, one for each quadrant.

Your challenge: pick a quadrant and go on an expedition to see how many of the spots you can find - there are four or five spots in each quadrant.

Some will probably be easy, some maybe not so easy, but all the pictures were taken from the sidewalk or roadway so there’s no need to sneak into anyone’s yard.

For a bigger challenge pick a quadrant you don’t normally walk in – it will be more fun exploring other areas and you will need to pay more attention to what you are walking by.

Find the details and pictures on the Richmond Beach Community Association’s website:

Whether you are searching for your favorite orca art piece, having fun at one of the many parks or walking along the bluff, our community has it all and getting outside and exploring the community is a perfect way to end the month-long Richmond Beach Celebration.

Edmonds Arts Festival planned for August

Monday, February 1, 2021

2019 Edmonds Arts Festival
With an emphasis on flexibility, planning is in process to hold the annual Edmonds Arts Festival on August 27, 28, and 29, 2021 from 10am to 6pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.

The Festival usually takes place over Father’s Day weekend in June, but due to COVID-19, it has been moved to August, with a focus on venue spaces that include acceptable social distancing.

In addition to the artists who will be selling their original creations, festival goers will have a chance to view and purchase award-winning art in our Gallery Artists exhibit.

Plans are also in the works to include food booths and performances on the Main Stage Amphitheater, but these activities will be dependent on coronavirus safety guidelines.

The Edmonds Arts Festival, held annually for more than 60 years, has grown to be one of the most prestigious art events in the country. Produced entirely by community volunteers, the Festival is the primary fundraiser that allows the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation to realize its mission to support the arts in our community.

“Last year, we had to cancel the Festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but with a vaccine becoming more available and the opportunity to rearrange the space for safety and health, the Festival Board decided to hold the event this year,” said Edmonds Arts Festival President Barbara Norgaard-Reid.
“We look forward to bringing back one of Edmonds’ most anticipated events.”

Celebrate Shoreline – An Attitude of Gratitude in the Pandemic

Monday, August 10, 2020

Positive messages from the Baháʼís
Celebrate Shoreline

Photos courtesy Baháʼís of Shoreline

The Celebrate Shoreline festival, which runs from August 9th through August 17th this year, was intended also to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the City of Shoreline.

Interurban Trail at the Park at Town Center

Due to the pandemic and the requirements for social distancing, however, the usual in-person community celebratory gatherings are not possible.

Instead, the City is providing yard signs and encouraging residents to create messages and post the signs to send greetings to all.

Abyaz at Aurora Prints

Continuing their participation in Celebrate Shoreline, the Baháʼís of Shoreline teamed up with local Shoreline business, Aurora Prints, to create signs to honor the City of Shoreline’s 25th birthday and to express gratitude to those who are continuing to provide essential services during the pandemic.

On Sunday, August 9, 2020 the Baháʼís posted signs along the Interurban Trail at the Park at Town Center and elsewhere, thanking the City of Shoreline, Shoreline Fire, Shoreline Police, Healthcare Workers, Grocery Workers, Delivery Workers and all Essential Workers for their service.

While the adults were installing the signs, the kids grabbed the sidewalk chalk, also provided by the City, and wrote messages of tribute and gratitude along the Trail.

Moradian's Sign

The kids’ messages included the statements Happy 25th Birthday, Shoreline – You Rock!, We love Shoreline!, Happy Birthday Shoreline, Be kind to all, Stand Together, and Our Diversity is Our Strength.

Celebrate Shoreline goes through August 17th. There’s still plenty of time to post more signs!

Celebrate Shoreline - Celebrate Your Neighbors

Saturday, August 1, 2020

Nominate someone for recognition or make art to celebrate your community

Shoreline Has Gratitude
Who has made a difference to you and your family?

In March, everything changed for all of us. We were asked to stay close to home to keep ourselves and others safe from the COVID-19 virus. Some of us began telecommuting, others juggled work and homeschooling, many people lost their jobs or were unable to work, and still others were deemed essential workers and continued to go to their job sites.

While everyone has had to make sacrifices during these challenging times, some of your neighbors have stepped up to help keep our community together. They work in hospitals and grocery stores; deliver mail and packages; drive buses and pick up garbage. They are teachers who offer lessons online and neighbors who help each other.

Nominate someone for recognition

Do you have a neighbor or know someone who lives and/or works in Shoreline who has made a difference? Are you one of those people? Send us an email to tell us about their or your work. If you can, share contact information for the person/people you are nominating.

Throughout the month of August, we will post short profiles on our Facebook page. We want to celebrate our neighbors who make this city a caring place to live.

Send your shout-outs to Constance Perenyi at cperenyi@shorelinewa.gov no later than August 21.

Sidewalk art appreciation

Throughout August, use sidewalk chalk to draw a colorful thank you message on your driveway or sidewalk. Make it big enough for people to see as they walk or drive by. Remember to be safe. Keep your distance from cars and stay at least six feet away from other people. Wash your hands well after you finish your drawing.

Please share your thank you messages on social media with the hashtag #iheartshoreline.

Celebrate Shoreline through art
Yard Sign Art

Even though we won’t get to enjoy our usual Celebrate Shoreline events throughout the City, residents can still celebrate our City’s anniversary. This year is a milestone –Shoreline became a city 25 years ago!

Decorate a celebratory yard sign to put in your yard or window, or add it to a parade of signs in the Park at Town Center along the Interurban Trail between August 9 and 17. The yard signs give you a starting point with the words CELEBRATE SHORELINE outlined at the top. You get to add your own creative touches. We’ve found that non-washable pens work well, but you can explore other ways to create your sign. Use your imagination as you celebrate your City! Please share pictures of your sign on social media with the hashtag #iheartshoreline.

Yard Sign Art event page

Chalk and Sign Pickup

We will distribute both sidewalk chalk and yard signs to decorate, free of charge. The number of available yard signs is limited, so only one per household, please. First come, first served. Pick-up times are:

Saturday, August 1, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
