Sunday, June 30, 2019

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

The Shoreline Arts Festival had a bright, sunny day at its new location at Shoreline Community College 16101 Greenwood Ave N.

A variety of hands-on art opportunities

The Festival made full use of the spacious facilities at the College with booths of all kinds spread out in a parking lot, a whole row of multicultural rooms, a room just for the Art from the Attic sale, not to mention food trucks and a lot of art activities for children.

The theatre had live dance performances from many cultures.

The Showmobile had a full schedule of performers

The Showmobile was set up and had a full schedule of performances throughout the day.

The festival continues on Sunday, from 10am to 5pm. The festival is free and there is free parking at the college.

For more information, visit the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council’s Festival website.

Some of the culture rooms

There was more room for the multinational culture rooms.

Hua Zhang, left, demonstrated Chinese brush stroke art in the Chinese culture room.

Central America was represented with a Panamanian display.

Residents donated art to be sold at the Art from the Attic room. All proceeds go to support the work of the Shoreline Arts Council.

Dennis Ashbrook and David Endicott from the Music4Life organization were ready to accept donations of musical instruments which will be refurbished and given to Shoreline Schools for the use of children whose families cannot afford to rent an instrument. This program has given the opportunity to participate in music programs for many students.

And, of course, there was art for sale in the juried art exhibit.

Edmonds Wine Walks July 6 and Aug 3

Art Walk Edmonds’ Summer Edmonds Wine Walks July 6th and August 3rd

If you’ve walked by the two murals installed in downtown Edmonds last summer and wondered who was responsible, wonder no more. Those murals were brought to you by Mural Project Edmonds, a committee under Art Walk Edmonds, and were funded in large part with proceeds from the Edmonds Summer Wine Walks.

Art Walk Edmonds is once again inviting you to come sip, shop, socialize and support the arts in Edmonds at the Edmonds Summer Wine Walks. The popular events are back again this year, and online ticketing is already open. Gather your friends and join our wine-loving community on two Saturdays this summer -- July 6th and August 3rd.

Art Walk Edmonds, in partnership with Seattle Uncorked is bringing a sampling of luscious local Washington wineries to your favorite downtown Edmonds business locations. Meet the local winemakers who will be pouring tastes of their hand-crafted wines in various shops on a gorgeous summer evening. These award-winning boutique wineries will each have a few options for our wine-loving public to taste.

Extend your enjoyment of the evening by having dinner in downtown Edmonds after the Wine Walk. Chanterelle, Girardi’s Osteria, The Loft, Anthony’s Homeport and Maize and Barley are waiving corkage fees for bottles purchased during Wine Walk on the evening of the events if you purchase food. Make sure to show them your Wine Walk map as proof of attendance.

Art Walk Edmonds is grateful to sponsors Coldwell Banker Bain of Edmonds, Ombu Salon + Spa, Cole Gallery, and Cline Jewelers. Edmonds Realty is providing complimentary tasting glasses for the July event and Adam Cobb of Windermere Real Estate Edmonds, who will be providing complimentary tasting glasses for the August event. Coldwell Banker Bain of Edmonds is sponsoring stylish reusable bottle tote bags for the 2019 Edmonds Summer Wine Walk season. It's not called the Strawberry Festival anymore
but there was still Strawberry Shortcake to eat!

The Richmond Beach Celebration was held on Saturday, May 11, 2019. Under the umbrella of the Celebration, Richmond Beach Rehab held a car show (see previous article) and Kruckeberg held their Mother's' Day Plant Sale.

At Richmond Beach Park, adjacent to the library, the party went on, with music, a kiddie parade, a book sale, Strawberry Shortcake, booths, food trucks, and kids' activities.

Community organizations had booths, Shoreline Fire was there with an aid car, just in case. There were bouncy houses and face painting. The Community Association sold gear.

Throughout the celebration, there was live music. This is Commander Mojo and the Horns of Discontent - quite good, we hear.

It takes hundreds of volunteers to put on an event like this - but everyone seems to have fun. If you would like to be involved with the next event, contact the RBCA.

1932 Ford

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

The annual car show at Richmond Beach Rehab, part of the Richmond Beach Celebration on Saturday, May 11, 2019, had some beauties.

This 1932 Ford drew the attention of little boys and big boys alike.

1940 Chevrolet panel truck

1940 Chevrolet panel truck

This probably was not the original color of this 1940 Chevrolet panel truck, but it sure looked good!

1941 Chevrolet Cabriolet

A 1941 Chevrolet Cabriolet holds its own against a sportier model. Probably fewer than 250 in the U.S. exist in this stock condition.

1954 Mercury Sun Valley

1954 Mercury Sun Valley with factory glass roof owned by Herb Bender of Mukilteo. He calls it "Taz" because it appeared the same year as the Taz cartoon character, which Herb also loves.

Airstream trailer and station wagon

Owners of Airstream trailers belonged to a national club and used to travel together in long convoys of gleaming aluminum. They were more fun to count than cows!

Destinations: Gardens of the World at the Northwest Flower and Garden Festival

Gardens of the World
Northwest Flower and Garden Festival
Washington State Convention Center

February 20-24, 2019

Text by Victoria Gilleland
Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Enjoy an Around the World Journey to fabulous show gardens at this year’s Flower and Garden Festival. Display gardens bring together colorful plant combinations, hardscape features and art…. natural and manmade. A nod to cultures from around the world can be enjoyed in each garden.

Mystic Garden

The showstopper garden for me is “Mystic Garden” by Nature Perfect Landscape and Design a stylized Sichuan-inspired Chinese Garden. This ‘Poet’s Garden’ has a unique Moon Gate Entrance with windows arranged around a secret garden. Stepping stones lead to a quiet pond and waterfall. A Gongshi or “Scholar’s Stone” is featured. These unusual time worn stones are said to have inspired China’s poets and painters. The plantings are simple and work beautifully with the natural hardscape elements and overall design. Select plants and stones have been loaned by the Seattle Chinese Garden in West Seattle.

Notting Hill

“Notting Hill….. A Modern English Garden” by Folia Horticultural + Design has created a distinctly British garden with an artsy London feel to it. The symmetrical design with upright yews, traditional box hedges and stainless steel globes that reflect light into the garden are masterfully incorporated. White flowering annuals and perennials match the reflection on the steel orbs, and they brighten the planting beds. Overall the design is sophisticated and elegantly understated.

“Escape to the Mountains” by Adam Gorski Landscapes, Inc. Salutes mountain ranges around the world….. Andes, Alps, Atlas, Himalayas, Pyrenees, Urals or our own Cascades. Mountains inspire with their rugged natural beauty and grandeur wherever we find them. An impressive natural stone waterfall and pond provides a serene focal point. The designer’s placement of large rocks, tall evergreen trees, and native plants gives us a sense of being in the wild. We can imagine a getaway to this mountain retreat to commune with nature.

There are 21 wonderful display gardens to enjoy. Something for everyone’s taste and interests. Don’t miss this opportunity to travel the world through a visit to spectacular display gardens at our 2019 Northwest Flower and Garden Festival!

Destinations: Local people exhibiting at the Seattle Home Show

Wednesday, February 20, 2019

Ticket link

Shoreline tile artist Paul Lewing will be in Booth 634 at the Seattle Home Show, Saturday February 23 through March 3, 2019. (See previous article about Paul)

Paul says, "I'll be showing my tile murals again in Booth #634. If you're planning on attending, go to the Home Show website, click on Get Tickets, click One Adult, and enter the promo code on the graphic above. It will get you 2-for-1 entry and $5 parking. I hope I'll see you there."

From backyard cottages to tiny homes, from smart home technology to landscaping and kitchen remodeling, Northwesterners will see all the latest for the home when the Seattle Home Show, the nation’s oldest and largest consumer home show, marks its 75th anniversary February 23 through March 3 at CenturyLink Field Event Center, 800 Occidental Ave S, Seattle 98134.

New products will abound at the 75th Seattle Home Show, including a “smart” induction burner, complete with its own smart pan and recipe app that guides you through every step, using Bluetooth technology not only to automatically control the burner’s temperature but send you alerts along the way until your dish is complete.

There’s also an outdoor lighting system, managed using your mobile device, letting you control all aspects of your lighting, as well as a “collapsible” tiny log cabin that lets you quickly assemble or disassemble it to move to another location.

“Seattle Home Show is the largest single gathering of the Northwest’s top building professionals open to the public,” said Mike Kalian, executive director.
“At Seattle Home Show, consumers have a one-of-a-kind opportunity not only to meet with them and comparison shop under one roof, but to see the new products and services as well as attend seminars taught by industry experts.”

As the 75th anniversary of the oldest home show in the country takes place right in the Northwest’s own backyard, technology for the home is big, housing is robust and remodeling continues to thrive.

Many homeowners here are choosing to remodel and stay in place rather than deal with the high cost of buying a new home and first-time homebuyers are often purchasing homes “as is” with the expectation that they will be investing in home renovations.

For both groups, Seattle Home Show provides an ideal venue for one-stop shopping for their home’s interior and exterior needs, from the leading builders, designers, landscapers and other building professionals in the region.

"Exhilarating," she said.

And at Magnuson Park's Matthews Beach in northeast Seattle, equally large numbers of people ran into the waters of Lake Washington.

Alain went ankle deep
"Success" and "Far enough" he said

Among the latter were local residents Kendahl and Alain Adjorlolo, although their plunging styles were somewhat different.
