Edmonds Driftwood Players – announcing 66th season

Saturday, June 15, 2024

Edmonds, WA – June 14, 2024 – Edmonds Driftwood Players is excited to announce our upcoming 2024-2025 Season 66, which will include four mainstage productions. We feel incredibly grateful to be headed into our 66th Season of theatre in Edmonds and look forward to celebrating with the community!

Season subscriptions go on sale for return subscribers on July 9 and for new subscribers on July 23. Tickets for individual shows go on sale July 30.

Edmonds Driftwood Players is a volunteer-based, non-profit community theatre with the mission to produce live theatre that entertains, enriches, and engages the community. Established in 1958, Edmonds Driftwood Players is one of the oldest continually operating community theatres in Washington State.

In addition to mainstage productions, we produce an annual Festival of Shorts, which consists of eight short plays centered around a different theme each year. The finalists are selected from hundreds of playwright submissions from around the world by volunteer reading groups who were given blind copies for rating.

Our annual playwriting festival provides an opportunity for playwrights to have their works brought to life on stage, as well as gain recognition and potential awards. Past winners have later been developed into full-length award-winning plays!

EDP’s New Works program includes First Draft, a staged reading series of nearly production-ready scripts curated by the members of Driftwood After Dark (EDP’s group of local playwrights). With a few rehearsals and minimal staging elements, First Draft readings give audiences an opportunity to experience the sorts of plays not usually included in the Mainstage Season, and to be a part of the development process by participating in post-reading feedback sessions to help playwrights further polish their work.

EDP also has an education program which includes camps for students to learn the ins and outs of putting on a production as well as classes and workshops. Additionally, Take a Kid to the Theatre is our outreach program that allows us to share the joy and wonder of live theatre with families in local shelters and transitional housing.

Edmonds Driftwood Players also offers annual scholarships for deserving students interested in pursuing theatre education at any college, university or technical school in the United States.

2024-2025 Season 66 Mainstage Productions:

Murder Inn (September 13-October 6, 2024)
  • By Howard Voland and Keith McGregor
  • Show Synopsis: Murder Inn is set in New England, at the Barnsley Inn, a dilapidated eighteenth century inn, which is supposedly haunted by Marco, a knife-throwing poltergeist. A group of tourists, on a tour - Ghosts and Ghouls of New England - is forced, by a storm, to make an unscheduled stop at the Barnsley. What looks to be an unpleasant and uncomfortable detour soon turns into a night of mayhem and madness as knives begin to pop up… in the most unexpected places. As the storm builds and the body count rises, the survivors try to figure out who done it. And even more important- who’s likely to have it done to them next?
Miracle on 34th Street, The Play (November 22-December 15, 2024)
  • Adapted by Mountain Community Theater from the novel by Valentine Davies. Based upon the Twentieth Century Fox motion picture Miracle on 34th Street.
  • Show Synopsis: By chance, Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, gets a job working as Santa for Macy's. Kris unleashes waves of good will with Macy's customers and the commercial world of New York City by referring parents to other stores to find exactly the toy their child has asked for. Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy's vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl's belief in Santa. In a dramatic decision, the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.
Clue: The Musical (March 14-April 6, 2025)
  • Book by Peter DePietro. Music by Galen Blum, Wayne Barker, and Vinnie Martucci. Lyrics by Tom Chiodo. Based on the Parker Brothers’ Board Game
  • Show Synopsis: The internationally popular game is now a fun-filled musical that brings the world’s best-known suspects to life and invites the audience to help solve the mystery: who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room, and with what weapon. The audience receives forms to help them deduce the solution from clues given throughout the fun-filled evening. Three audience members choose from cards representing the potential murderers, weapons, and rooms; there are 216 possible solutions! Only one hard-nosed female detective is qualified to unravel the merry mayhem. Comic antics, witty lyrics, and a beguiling score carry the investigation from room to room. Even after the culprit confesses, a surprise twist delights the audience.
Drinking Habits (May 16-June 8, 2025)
  • By Tom Smith
  • Show Synopsis: Accusations, mistaken identities, and romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce. Two nuns at the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep the convent's doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former fiancées, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun, spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from Rome to shut them down. Strawberry Festival: Food and Activities for All

Friday, June 7, 2024

The annual Richmond Beach Strawberry Festival returns Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 12 - 5pm at Richmond Beach Community Park 2201 NW 197th St, Shoreline, WA 98177

You’ve saved the date, now here’s what you have to look forward to.

From the parade to live music, Strawberry Festival activities have one goal in mind — building community. Bring your family and invite your neighbors to join us for a day of fun, food, and togetherness.

Community Parade Kickoff
Help us kick off the start of the festival by participating in the Strawberry Festival Community Parade, starting at 11:45am and led by the Shorewood High School drumline. This year’s parade theme is Olympics! Represent your country or favorite sport and march the park perimeter together to kick off the festival! All ages are welcome.

Kids Activities
While parents enjoy strawberry shortcakes, kids can get wiggles out in the bounce houses, play carnival games, get their faces painted, complete an art project, blow bubbles, draw with chalk, and of course, play on the playground with friends.

Music Lineup
It’s not a festival without music and Tom Petersen has lined up some great bands. While you browse the booths of local businesses and grab some food truck grub, jam to three different bands playing everything from rock and blues to jazz and salsa!

Strawberry Shortcake
Whatever you munch on, save room for our traditional strawberry shortcake — a must at the Strawberry Festival! The Richmond Beach Community Association serves this treat as a nod to our neighborhood’s strawberry farm heritage. Fresh strawberries from Town & Country and whipped cream are piled on top of shortcakes from Edmonds Bakery.

Food Trucks
Be sure to come hungry because you’ll have plenty of food options. Four food trucks will serve everything from Indian to Mexican to Southern food. Grab a street taco from Isidro’s, an espresso from Vulpine, pizza from Oskar’s, or an authentic po’boy from Where Ya At Matt.

Parking
Please plan to walk or carpool to this popular event. If needed, limited overflow parking will be available at the Richmond Beach Congregational Church, in the upper lot located off 15th Avenue.

Join Us!
The RBCA’s mission is to build community. The annual Strawberry Festival is our signature event to do just that. We hope to see you and your neighbors there!

Opening Friday: Move Over Mrs. Markham at The Phoenix Theatre in Edmonds

Wednesday, May 29, 2024

Opening this Friday May 31, 2024, it's Move Over Mrs. Markham by John Chapman & Ray Cooney directed by Eric Lewis.

This funny and fast-paced bedroom farce is super fun for everyone over the age of about 12 or 13. Cheeky and cute, with some saucy innuendo but no nudity.

"Move Over Mrs. Markham is set in a very elegant top floor London flat, belonging to Philip and Joanna Markham. The flat has been under renovation, and thus has been largely empty. Philip is a straight-laced publisher of children's books, and he shares an office with his partner, Henry Lodge, on the ground floor.

"Reluctantly, Philip agrees to let Henry borrow his apartment for the evening to "entertain" his latest girlfriend. At the same time, Joanna Markham is persuaded by Linda Lodge to let her borrow the apartment, so she can entertain her lover.

"What nobody knows is that the interior designer who had been decorating the apartment for the past three months has decided that this was the night he and the au pair girl would try out the new round bed! When all three sets of people converge on the apartment, expecting to find it empty, chaos and confusion ensue."

May 31-June 23, 2024
  • Adults 54 & under $25

Olympic Ballet Theatre presents Summer Performance June 1, 2024 at Edmonds Center for the Arts

Summer Performance

Featuring excerpts from the classical ballet “Raymonda” and a contemporary work “A Gentle Prelude” by Donald Byrd

June 1, 2024, at 7 PM
Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA)
410 4th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020

Edmonds, WA – Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) closes the 2023-24 performance season with an eclectic production showcasing the diversity of ballet styles. This annual production honors tradition and celebrates innovation, featuring excerpts from classical ballets by famed choreographers of the past and exciting works by contemporary choreographers of today.

The 2024 production of Summer Performance presents Raymonda Suite, excerpts from Marius Petipa’s famed classical ballet Raymonda, and A Gentle Prelude, choreographed by Donald Byrd, Seattle-based Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theatre.

Raymonda (Suite)
Choreography: Marius Petipa
Music: Alexander Glazunov
Premiere: Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 1898

Raymonda is a classical ballet in three acts known for its exquisite choreography and beautiful music. Set in the 12th century, this ballet tells the love story of the beautiful young countess, Raymonda, and her fiancé who saves her from being abducted by a Saracen knight. Olympic Ballet Theatre will present excerpts from this timeless ballet, showcasing the technical prowess of its dancers.

A Gentle Prelude
Choreography: Donald Byrd
Music: Duke Ellington
Premiere: February 29, 2000

A Gentle Prelude is a movement from Donald Byrd's evening-length three-act abstract dance work, "In A Different Light," that explores the lesser-known musical compositions of the great Duke Ellington. Ellington (1899-1974), who achieved success as a composer, orchestrator, bandleader, and pianist, is often considered the greatest composer in the history of jazz music and one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

A Gentle Prelude focuses on the solo piano and small ensemble works of Ellington as opposed to his more well-known "big band" pieces. The dance is a work for 7 dancers who appear to be in an imaginary 1930s romantic ballroom, and it details different types of relationships among shifting groups of dancers. Solos, duets, trios, and quartets variously describe how people connect and miss making connections.

53rd Annual Folklife Festival Saturday - Monday at Seattle Center

Saturday, May 25, 2024

Folklife 2024 Cultural Focus is Meraki.

Meraki marks the 3rd chapter of our 5-year Cultural Focus storyline. Meraki derives from the Greek language and means doing something with passion, soul, and love. In 2022, our first in-person festival out of the pandemic, Metamorphosis asked that we accept and welcome change and transformation as a natural part of our everyday folk lives.

In 2023, Lagom compelled us to accept change as part of a journey towards finding a new balance within ourselves, our communities, and our larger ecosystem.

From that place of balance, Meraki urges us to seek that which gives us joy, so that whatever we put our minds to can be approached and accomplished with a sense of pride, soulfulness, and discipline.

A portion of profits raised by the Festival each year is given to the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, which supports educational and cultural enrichment of our community through the arts.

The Foundation awards art scholarships, education grants, and installs public art.

In addition, they support ArtWorks, a gathering place for artists in downtown Edmonds, and many other local art groups including the Edmonds Center for the Arts, the Edmonds Art Studio Tour, Edmonds Waterfront Center, and Cascadia Art Museum.

This year, Edmonds Arts Festival runs June 14-16, 2024 (Friday and Saturday 10am-7pm, Sunday 10am-5pm) at the Frances Anderson Center, 700 Main St., Edmonds.

Sno-King International Folk Dance Club

Come dance with us!

We do a large repertoire of folk dances from many countries- couple dances, no-partner dances, set dances, and individual dances.

You don't need to bring a partner.

We meet at the Grange in Lynnwood from 7:00 to 9:00pm every Wednesday. First there is a half hour of requests. Next is a lesson, and a program of dances mixed with more requests.

The second Wednesday of each month we start early at 6:45pm for a lesson in Scottish or English set dancing.

We have a party the second Saturday of each month - next one is June 8, with a beach theme.

Wednesday, May 22, we have a special guest teacher, Jana Rickel, who will teach three Balkan line dances.

Donation:$8.00; members $6.00. First time free!
