Casual Bridge Play at Seattle Bridge Center - November/December 2023

Saturday, November 18, 2023

On Monday evenings from November 20 through December 18, Seattle Bridge Center is hosting Casual Bridge Play from 7pm to 9pm.

Light snacks provided. Come on whichever Mondays work for you.

If you've just finished a lesson series, or you are returning to the game and feeling rusty, you can practice your bridge skills with supervised play.

You can ask questions about how to bid or play a hand, and you can use printed reference materials.

Or if you are brand new to the game of bridge, we'll introduce you to the basic ideas of the game and we may even be able to get some cards into your hands.

Or if you are a more experienced player, come on by! With enough experienced players, we'll set up a table for you where you can play at your own pace.

Most play will be shuffle-and-deal with random hands. Occasionally, we will introduce some elements of competitive play by comparing results between tables. No masterpoints will be awarded.

Cost: $5 cash per person, with discounts for players age 18 and under.

It's nice to know how many folks are coming, so please drop us a note at SeattleBridgeCenter@gmail.com and mention that you're interested in attending "Casual Bridge Play on Monday nights".

See you at the bridge tables!

Seattle Bridge Center is located at 1539 NE 145th St, Seattle, WA 98155

~ CHRISTMAS IN THE MIDWEST ~

Just in time for the holidays, The Phoenix Theatre is here to provide you with the new Christmas classic, A Nice Family Christmas by Phil Olson.

Bring the Midwest to the Northwest with this crazy and insightful family comedy – complete with lutefisk, a grumpy granny, and heaps of laughs.

It’s Christmas Eve, and a young newspaper reporter on the brink of being fired has been assigned a last-chance story about a typical family Christmas – his family’s Christmas. He goes home to his recently widowed mother, his crazy uncle, his eccentric grandmother, and his battling siblings and their neurotic spouses, who provide no shortage of material.

One by one, we learn each family member’s secrets, problems, and dysfunctions, and when they learn that he’s writing an article with some very personal family information, the fruitcake hits the fan. The question is, will the magic of Christmas bring this family back together?

Director Eric Lewis and the incredible cast are in rehearsal now and are prepping a fantastic show.

"Things are really moving along nicely. It’s a really talented group of actors and the play is delightfully written,” says Lewis, “These are full, rich characters who yearn to unite with their family but, as in real life, they find that they cannot quite connect. We get to watch them grow and change. And also get manipulated by a loving mother.”

Featuring local favorites Melanie Calderwood, Susan Connors, and James Lynch this show is sure to sell quickly!

Interested parties can learn more about the show by visiting www.tptedmonds.org

*Sundays are going fast, if you prefer to attend a matinee do not delay!

Start your Thanksgiving week with a story about generosity and community connection

This year, Thanksgiving week will start off with a “storytime” for all ages at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park on Monday, November 20, 2023 at 5pm.

That’s when local author Alice K. Boatwright will read aloud Mrs. Potts Finds Thanksgiving, a story inspired by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

In this contemporary re-telling, the miserly Martha Potts is reminded that there's more to life than work and money after chance encounters with a homeless woman and a stray cat, who comes to stay.

Between Thanksgiving eve and Thanksgiving Day, events unfold that lead her to rediscover the importance of connection and the true meaning of the holiday: giving and gratitude.

Kirkus Reviews described the book as “a rebooted, briskly-paced holiday parable that focuses on generosity and community connection."

Boatwright says she originally wrote the story while her husband cooked their Thanksgiving turkey because their San Francisco kitchen was too small for two people to work in it at the same time.

Reading it aloud for friends became an annual holiday tradition; and, at their urging, she decided to collaborate with artist Jan L. Waldron and publish it as a book under her own imprint, Firefly Ink Books.

Boatwright is especially pleased to have the opportunity to read the story at Third Place Books, and she loves to hear that people who’ve bought the book read it aloud together. “Audiobooks are wonderful, but it’s nice to take back the pleasure of shared reading too.”

Local author Alice K. Boatwright
to read at Third Place Books
Mrs. Potts Finds Thanksgiving is Boatwright’s first children’s book, although her varied career as a writer has included stints as a children’s librarian and bookseller, as well as traveling the world writing about public health issues.

She is also the author of the popular Ellie Kent mysteries, three linked novellas about the Vietnam War era, and other fiction. She lives in Lake Forest Park.

Mrs. Potts Finds Thanksgiving is available in hardcover, paperback, and e-book editions through bookstores and online retailers.

Books will be available for purchase and signing through Third Place Books.

Calendar Girls at the Phoenix Theatre starts with a laugh that doesn't really stop

Friday, October 20, 2023

The Calendar Girls in their tai chi class
By Kindle Carpp

If you don’t like to laugh please avoid this play. Calendar Girls starts off with a laugh that doesn’t really stop. The humor has great timing and great energy. It has a thread of a sad story that leads to some touching moments.

Tim Firth’s hilarious play is based on the true story of eleven Women's Institute members who famously posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund in 1999 after the husband of a member dies of the disease.

Director Renee Gilbert said, “Eleven women decided to laugh in the face of traditional propriety and do what they felt needed to be done in order to help overcome grief. And now their laughter is passed onto us.”

There was a fun use of props to allow the actors to be “nude” on stage.

The ensemble cast and their comedic timing made this lighthearted comedy easy to watch. I especially enjoyed Melanie Calderwood’s subtle physical comedy in her portrayal of the doddering Ruth. And Ingrid Sanai Buron made Marie unlikable in the most authentic kind of way.

I particularly took notice of the costumes by Elizabeth Shipman. It was a subtle use of color in a neutral colored set. They felt like an expression of each character.

Calendar Girls runs through Sunday, October 29, 2023,
  • Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm
  • Sundays at 2pm
Adults $25.00
Seniors 55+/Students/US Military and Veterans $20.00

Run Time: 100 Minutes with a 15-minute intermission

Appropriate for viewers 13 and up with parental guidance suggested and implied nudity.

Cry It Out now playing at As If Theatre in Kenmore

Wednesday, October 18, 2023

Jessie (Taryn Pearce) and Lina (Gabriela Noble) are new mothers and new friends

Cry It Out is currently playing at the charming theatre in the Kenmore Community Club, 7304 NE 175th St, Kenmore, WA 98028.

Cry It Out is a drama that uses humor to add levity to lighten the mood and not bog down the audience in the everyday struggles of life. The topics brought up are universal to American families and the complicated relationships we have with our spouses, parents and ourselves when we have major life changes, in this case children.

The dialog and acting were so authentic that I had to hold myself back from joining in on Jessie and Lina's backyard conversations.

The talented actors brought me so deep into the story that I wanted to both give Adrienne a cup of overly hot coffee so she would burn off her taste buds and hug her once we were given a window into her world.

And I really wanted to give Mitchell a gift certificate for therapy because he made me so uncomfortable and it was clear it was because he had issues that had not been resolved.

Cry It Out features the talent of Taryn Pearce (Jessie), Gabriela Noble (Lina), Kira Dorrian (Adrienne), and Varun Kainth (Mitchell), with a creative team that includes Ken Michels (Set Design), Gwyn Skone (Lighting Design), William French (Sound Design), Ali Kidder-Mostrom (Costume Design), and Chandria Danelle (Property Design).

This story of three new mothers was written by Molly Smith Metzler (Shameless, Orange is the New Black, and Maid), and directed by Shoreline resident Betsy Mugavero.

Cry It Out runs two more weekends October 19-29, 2023 – Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 5:00pm,  90 minutes, no intermission

Tickets: $25 and $20 (Seniors / Students) available at asiftheatre.com

Cry It Out opens Thursday, October 12, 2023 at As If Theatre in Kenmore

Saturday, October 7, 2023

As If Theatre Company presents CRY IT OUT,
a comedy with dark edges, by Molly Smith Metzler

October 12-29, 2023

As If Theatre Company is pleased to announce its sixth mainstage production, Cry It Out, written by Molly Smith Metzler (Shameless, Orange is the New Black, and Maid), and directed by Betsy Mugavero.

Cry It Out holds both a microscope and a megaphone to the joys and perils that today’s mothers face. This heartwarming comedy takes a sharp and honest look at the power of female friendship, the dilemma of going back to work after being home with a newborn, and the effect that economic and social class has on parenthood in America.

“It’s an investigation of class, friendship, and resilience through the lens of working parenthood in America,” says director Mugavero.
“This play is such a poignant look at both the absurdity and profundity that follows in the wake of a newborn for those first few weeks of delirious bliss and unimaginable terror. I can't wait for audiences to laugh and cry with us.”

Cry It Out features the talent of Taryn Pearce (Jessie), Gabriela Noble (Lina), Kira Dorrian (Adrienne), and Varun Kainth (Mitchell), with a creative team that includes Ken Michels (Set Design), Gwyn Skone (Lighting Design), William French (Sound Design), Ali Kidder-Mostrom (Costume Design), and Chandria Danelle (Property Design).

  • When: Oct. 12-29, 2023 – Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 7:30pm, Sundays at 5:00pm
  • Where: Kenmore Community Club, 7304 NE 175th St, Kenmore, WA 98028
