The Spitfire Grill
Music and Book by James Valcq Lyrics and Book by Fred Alley
Based on the film by Lee David Zlotoff

Edmonds, WA – Inspired by the hit 1996 film, The Spitfire Grill is a heartwarming and inspirational musical tale of redemption, perseverance, and family.

A feisty parolee follows her dreams, based on a page from an old travel book, to a small town in Wisconsin and finds a place for herself working at Hannah’s Spitfire Grill.

Soon, mail arrives by the wheelbarrow and things really start cookin’ at the Spitfire Grill.

Directed by Diane Johnston and featuring the double casted acting talents of Sarah Hooper and Rachel Ruby Squires (Percy Talbott), Vicki Wicks and Gina Wilhelm (Hannah Ferguson), Annelise Harlan and Rachel Mills (Shelby Thorpe), Jaret Miller and Michael McFadden (Caleb Thorpe), Justin Tran and Dov Matthews (Sheriff Joe Sutter), Natasha Thompson and Emi Faltinson (Effy Krayneck), David “DC” Dugdale and Bill Kusler (The Visitor).

The Arabian Nights at Shoreline Community College

Monday, February 13, 2023

The Arabian Nights is a full-length drama adapted for the stage by Mary Zimmerman from Powys Mather's translation of The Book of Thousand Nights and One Night.

Passionate, playful, provocative storytelling, The Arabian Nights examines the fascinating tale of Scheherazade.

In the wake of discovering his queens infidelity cruel King Shahryar has soured on all womankind. Then theres no one left but clever Scheherazade. Can her 1001 cliffhanger stories keep her alive?

The Arabian Nights tells the tale of Scheherazade's nightly telling of evocative tales. 1001 nights later the storyteller and listener are forever changed. A twelve-member cast enacts Scheherazade's tales of love, lust, comedy, and dreams.

Scheherazade's cliffhanger stories prevent her husband, the cruel ruler Shahryar, from murdering her, and after 1,001 nights, Shahryar is cured of his madness, and Scheherazade returns to her family.

This adaptation offers a wonderful blend of the lesser-known tales from Arabian Nights with the recurring theme of how the magic of storytelling holds the power to change people. The final scene brings the audience back to a modern day Baghdad with the wail of air raid sirens threatening the rich culture and history that are embodied by these tales."

The Phoenix Theatre is bringing the comedy back to evil potions! Start your February with some dark comedy with Lauren Wilson’s comedy, Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll and Hyde Play, February 3rd – February 26, 2023.

Dr. Jekyll's research finds him – as usual – investigating the split between good and evil in the human psyche. Of course, things get out of hand when he decides being evil might be more fun and recreational.

Never underestimate an evil potion

Rebelling against the repression of Victorian Society, Dr. Jekyll unleashes a libidinous monster on the world.

This hilarious spoof of the classic story by Robert Louis Stevenson will keep you in stitches as this fast-paced comedy takes the stage.

Director Eric Lewis and the incredible cast are putting finishing touches on this madcap comedy this week.

"We are having so much fun in rehearsals. We are in the middle of creating exciting fight scenes that are sure to thrill," says Lewis. "It's one of those plays that is really hard to put a label to - definitely funny; some old-school slapstick; some dark comedy; and delightful stage effects. The cast and crew are great - it is a pleasure to work with such talented people."

Featuring local favorites Ingrid Sanai Buron, Melanie Calderwood, and Susan Connors, this show is sure to sell quickly!

Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) in Edmonds continues its 2022-2023 performance season with DEBUTS in February, presenting new works by contemporary choreographers. This production features From the Dark Land by Donald Byrd and “O.D.D.” (Oliver Davis Dances) by Arcadian Broad.

“We included DEBUTS in the OBT performance season last year, and we are excited to bring it back with new creative pieces by contemporary choreographers this season,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Donald Byrd, the award-winning local choreographer, often referred to as ‘citizen artist,’ and Arcadian Broad, a soloist at The Sarasota Ballet, who mesmerized OBT audiences with his dashing performance as Basilio in our production of Don Quixote. We look forward to delighting our patrons with this celebration of creativity in contemporary ballet.”

This production will include a “Meet the Artists” Q/A session on Saturday, February 18, 2023, immediately following the performance. Audience members will have an exciting opportunity to meet both choreographers and learn more about their creative process of bringing new works to life on stage.

The Lantern Festival has been part of the Chinese New Year celebrations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 221AD). It is said that the holiday evolved from an ancient Chinese belief that celestial spirits could be seen flying about in the light of the first full moon of the lunar calendar.

The children don't look entirely sure about the lion's intentions
People used torches and eventually lanterns to aid them in spotting the spirits. The lanterns come in all shapes and sizes. Some are created in the form of animals, insects, flowers, people or even machines and buildings. Others depict scenes from popular stories teaching filial piety and traditional values. A favorite subject is the zodiac animal of the year - this year, the rabbit.
