Great Washington Shake Out Oct 15 - drop, cover, and hold on

Wednesday, October 14, 2020

Get ready for the “big one” during the Great Washington ShakeOut on October 15

Millions of people across the country will participate in the annual ShakeOut earthquake drill on October 15, 2020 at 10:15am, local time. The drill encourages residents to practice what to do if an earthquake occurs.

In past years, the ShakeOut drill has focused on earthquake preparedness in the workplace. This year, with so many employees teleworking, many will be looking at how to get prepared at home. Among the hundreds of organizations participating, King County government is encouraging all their employees to practice drop, cover, and hold on, and to test their personal emergency plan.

“King County has experienced its fair share of emergencies in 2020, from unprecedented winter storms and floods to COVID-19. But earthquakes don’t wait, and we don’t know when we might experience one,” says Brendan McCluskey, director of King County Emergency Management.
“We are encouraging everyone to practice the simple steps of drop, cover, and hold on.”

Practicing these simple steps helps them become second nature in case of an earthquake. Residents also should make a plan, gather emergency supplies, and talk about their plans with their loved ones and neighbors.

For information on how to better be prepared for an earthquake and to learn about the risks of earthquakes in King County, visit kingcounty.gov/ready

Local area students to compete in virtual Destination Imagination competition

Sixth grade students from King's Schools and Brighton Schools (Noah Anderson, Dylan Johnson De Lacy, Noah Hopkins, Michael Usoltsev, and Nolan Walsh) plan to compete in a virtual competition through Destination Imagination this May. Destination Imagination is a volunteer run, non-profit educational competition for elementary through college aged students.

had been created as a prop for their presentation

In Destination Imagination, student groups choose a modern-day challenge to solve through their creativity and group collaboration. Through meeting and seeking to solve these challenges, they become prepared for success in facing 21st century challenges as citizens and professionally.

The King's/Brighton 6th grade group chose to learn about earthquakes and to focus on spreading the message about earthquake preparedness in their community. They researched the topic and toured the University of Washington seismology lab, learning about current research being done on the West Coast. Afterwards, they created a community presentation to teach what they had learned to others.

To get the word out about a free presentation they would later give at the Edmonds Public Library, the group canvassed the town of Woodway with flyers that told about earthquakes, earthquake preparedness, and their upcoming presentation.

Later, during their community presentation at the library, a local insurance representative provided free emergency starter kits to attendees that included items like hand sanitizer, wind up flashlights, emergency blankets, and wet wipes. On the wave of this successful presentation, the kids presented the information to the students and staff at King's and Brighton schools.

They gave their presentation at both King's and Brighton schools

The group was set to compete earlier this spring in the Destination Imagination tournament to be held in Bellevue, but it was cancelled due to precautions around the coronavirus. Now the competition will be held virtually next month. The kids feel excited to be able to compete virtually, to show their creative solution, and all the work they put into the project.

NEMCo was created to provide the communities it serves with efficient emergency management resources.

With so many staying home and unable to work, local food banks are in need of donations as well.

NEMCo set up this one-day, four hour opportunity to collect donations. It was a drive-thru setup, with vehicles driving in to hand off items to a volunteer.

Out and about in Shoreline: traffic and toilet paper

Northbound I-5 at rush hour

Text and photos by Cynthia Sheridan

Northbound traffic was extremely light during rush hour as people either worked from home - or just stayed home.

Left lanes are headed south into Seattle at rush hour

Traffic heading into Seattle was even lighter as cars ( in left lanes) approached NE 145th overpass on I-5.

North City Safeway was on overload all day Wednesday as shoppers braced for possible supply shortages and/or store closings.

Personal hygiene items were limited and the toilet paper shelves were “wiped” out. Empty shelves ready for more toilet paper. North City Safeway says there’s more in the back and they’re restocking daily.

Most carts had more than one package of toilet paper as North City Safeway shoppers prepared for possible shortages.

More toilet paper.

Also in high demand: hand sanitizer, bleach, antiseptic wipes and Purell.

TP on the belt, waiting to be checked out.

North City Water District prepares to respond to disasters large and small

Saturday, February 29, 2020

Most likely local disaster
Earthquake
The North City Water District serves east Shoreline and west Lake Forest Park

On Wednesday, February 26, North City Water District’s main administrative headquarters closed while our staff and Board of Commissioners attended all-day ICS training.

Incident Command System (ICS) training is a component of the National Incident Management System — a comprehensive, national approach that helps public agencies like ours be better prepared to handle a natural disaster, through the use of standardized terminology, equipment, and organizational structures.

By helping us communicate with and plan for interactions with other agencies in emergency situations, this training helps us do what we do best: ensure safe, reliable water supply in the event of an emergency.

In our case, emergencies can range from a localized event such as a broken water main (which occur due to varying causes, including soil and construction conditions when the pipe was installed, shifts in the surrounding soils, temperature fluctuations, and the age of the pipe itself), to larger scale natural disasters such as a potential earthquake, often referred to in regional planning efforts as the “Cascadia event” in our area.

In addition to ICS training, we’ve joined ShakeAlert (the early warning system developed by the U.S. Geological Survey), installed backup generators at both our main North City / Denny Clouse Pump Station and our Administrative Headquarters, and held several multi-agency meetings to help our staff be prepared to communicate and participate in a coordinated emergency response with other agencies.

We’ve also asked our ratepayers to contact us if you would like us to add your emergency contact information to your account, which we would use strictly in the event of an emergency for announcement purposes, in addition to announcements on our website, Facebook, and NextDoor.com.

Feel free to email us at customerservice@northcitywater.org, or give us a call at 206-362-8100 to learn more and/or provide us with your emergency contact info.

Diane Pottinger, District Manager

Community invited to presentation Sunday on preparing for emergencies

Saturday, January 4, 2020

An emergency doesn't have to be an
earthquake or a volcano - it could just be
that you can't get out of your house.
Photo by Pam Cross in Shoreline

With many of us making resolutions for the new decade, maybe one of those resolutions might be making sure we’re prepared for emergencies!

With that in mind, First Lutheran Church of Richmond Beach will be hosting Jason McMillan, Shoreline’s Director of the Office of Emergency Management, from 9:45am to 10:45am on Sunday, January 5, 2020, and the community is more than welcome!

Jason will be giving a PowerPoint presentation covering what we all can do to prepare ourselves for something we hope won’t happen – but might!

He will have handouts available and will be there to respond to any questions you might have. Do come! Coffee, tea, and goodies will be available in the upstairs room at 9:45am.

The church is located at 18354 8th Ave NW, Shoreline 98177 near the 4-corners business district.

A one-hour presentation is followed by hands-on practice packing wounds and applying tourniquets. The presentation includes a 10-minute video on surviving an active shooter situation.
