Northshore CERT class starts Sept 11

Monday, September 4, 2017

CERT is an organization of volunteer emergency workers who have received specific training in basic disaster response skills with the intent of supplementing existing emergency responders in the event of a major disaster.

Following a major disaster, local Fire, Medical, Police, City, and other first responders may not be able to meet the demand for their services. Residents and visitors to our community may need to rely on each other for help in order to meet their immediate life sustaining needs.

The Northshore Emergency Management Coalition CERT program will educate participants about local hazards, basic disaster preparedness, and provide hands on training that includes fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. After completing the CERT academy, volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in additional drills and exercises to keep their skills sharp and continue to enhance their knowledge and abilities.

The next CERT academy will begin on September 11, 2017. Classes do fill up and registration is open to the first 30 that submit a completed registration form along with the $35 class fee.

For more information on Northshore Emergency Management Coalition CERT program or to be sure to be notified as soon as registration begins, contact the program manager at 425-354-1744 or by email.

Amateur radio license course starts Feb 27 in Kenmore

Wednesday, February 1, 2017

The Northshore Emergency Management Coalition (NEMCo) is offering an amateur radio license course starting Monday, February 27, 2017 to prepare individuals for the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Technician Class License examination. The course convenes Monday evenings, 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Northshore Utility District for eight consecutive weeks. The FCC exam is scheduled for April 17.

The Technician Class License is the beginner-level amateur band radio license required for entry into the fascinating hobby of “ham” radio. Something of a misnomer, the Technician license has nothing to do with repairing radios. It’s all about getting on the air and communicating with a region-wide network of ham radio operators for fun or helping governments transmit vital disaster response information when telephones and other communication systems fail.

Successful students are also eligible to move on and earn the General Class License, which provides access to world-wide, high frequency (“shortwave”) communications.

The course itself is free. There is a $15 fee for the FCC exam. The course textbook is the ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, 3rd Edition. It is published by the American Radio Relay League for $30 plus shipping, but may be obtainable from Amazon.com or other booksellers for a bit less. Alternatively, NEMCo can obtain it for you from the ARRL at the discounted price of $25 as part of a group order, but that will require advance notice, to allow for shipping time and arrange for pick-up. There are no additional costs.

Students may register anytime up to the start of the course on February 27, but anyone wishing to obtain the textbook through NEMCo should place your order by Tuesday, February 14.

The Northshore Emergency Management Coalition (NEMCo) is a partnership between the cities of Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Northshore Utility District and Northshore Fire District, to provide emergency management services. A group of NEMCo volunteer radio operators provide emergency communications among the member entities when disasters or severe weather disables telephones, as part of the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES).

Students who successfully pass the Technician exam, as well as other members of the community who already hold an amateur radio license, are encouraged to apply for membership in the NEMCo RACES group.

Contact the Course Manager, Carl Lunak, at 425-354-1744 or  to register or ask questions about getting started in amateur band radio.

The Northshore Utility District address is: 6830 NE 185th St, Kenmore 98028.

Map your neighborhood training at LFP Citizens' Commission

Monday, January 23, 2017

Lake Forest Park Citizens Commission will be having a "Map Your Neighborhood" event on Tuesday evening, January 24, 2017, at Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, at the Stage Area.

This event is free, open to the public, and non-partisan.

It is the officially adopted emergency preparedness / disaster planning program in Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and Shoreline.

There will be a training session for the public to attend and then go back to their local neighborhoods to execute the program.

The program is designed to fill the needs during a disaster-type emergency when and where your local police, fire, medical, or utility crews cannot respond in the usual time-frames we are used to.

This Program encourages neighbors to form smaller groups of neighbors that can check on each other and help each other in the event of help needed, and to help secure their property from fires, potential flooding (broken water pipes), and explosions from gas-related events, all within the Golden Hour.

Map your Neighborhood

Neighborhoods that are prepared for emergencies and disaster situations save lives, reduce the severity of injuries and trauma and reduce property damage. In addition, contributing as an individual and working together as a team helps develop stronger communities and improve the quality of life in the community.

The Map Your Neighborhood program guides you and your neighbors through simple steps to help enhance your preparedness for an emergency. These steps will help you to quickly and safely take actions that can minimize damage and protect lives. It is designed to improve disaster readiness at the neighborhood level and teaches neighbors to rely on each other during the hours or days before fire, medical, police or utility responders arrive.

Respond to disaster at a local level - Map Your Shoreline Neighborhood

At the regular Shoreline Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) meeting on Wednesday, January 25, 2017, we will be conducting a Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) event.

Typically, MYN is done in a small area, like a block or cul-de-sac.

At the CERT meeting, we will run a regular MYN program, but modify the discussion to be based on the people who come to the meeting and the neighborhoods that they represent.

If you are already part of a MYN, or are interested in MYN, this will be an opportunity to learn more about responding to a disaster on a local level.

The CERT meeting will be held at Fire Station 61, at 17525 Aurora Avenue N, at 7:00pm on Wednesday, January 25, and is open to the public. Enter the parking lot from Aurora, southbound.

The next Northshore Emergency Management Coalition (NEMCo) Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) academy will begin on Monday March 6th for Kenmore and Lake Forest Park residents.

The 8 week program teaches participants critical skills to help family, friends, and neighbors in emergency situations. Classes begin at 7pm each night and end at 10pm at Fire Station 51 in Kenmore, 7220 NE 181st Street.

The cost of the class is $35. Registration will begin February 1st. For more information and to be sure to get an application as soon as they are available email Carl Lunak

During actual emergencies within the cities of Kenmore and/or Lake Forest Park CERT volunteers may be called upon to assist city staff and other partner agencies to perform a wide variety of tasks to help our community respond and recover.

What to expect at a CERT class?

Most of the 8 week long program is divided up into both classroom and hands on training. Some of that training will be outside and may require participants to kneel, bend, stoop, crawl, or be in other awkward body positions.

The instructors will attempt to prepare students for what activities are coming, but all students should dress in layers (weather dependent) and appropriate attire for this type of activity.

If participants have any limitation or need accommodations, let our instructors know. The hands-on portions of the class are not a requirement of completion, but do enhance the training dramatically.

The rains have come - get ready for winter weather

Wednesday, November 16, 2016

Fall and Winter Storms --
Let's Be Ready Together
From the City of Lake Forest Park

In Lake Forest Park, fall and winter can bring heavy rain, high winds, ice, and snow.

The City begins preparing for winter weather in the summer, by training staff, preparing equipment, and working with local agency partners.

When high winds, heavy rain, or ice and snow are forecast, our crews are ready to head into action.

In addition to City preparedness, it is important that individuals prepare themselves and their families for emergencies. A number of resources are available on the City’s website to help you prepare, including information about how to contact the various utilities serving Lake Forest Park residents; the City’s map of priority snow and ice routes; sandbag locations; and building an emergency preparedness kit.

Click on “Let’s Be Ready,” below, to open a document containing additional information and helpful links to preparedness resources available on the City’s website and elsewhere.

Sand bag fill station at Hamlin Park

Thursday, October 13, 2016

The City of Shoreline has set up a sand bag fill station at Hamlin Park for residents and businesses to help prevent or minimize localized flooding.

The City of Shoreline is encouraging its residents and businesses to be prepared for inclement weather, including flood prevention.

Sandbags can be used on private property to help prevent or minimize localized flooding.

A Self-Serve Sand Bag Station with free sand and bags is located in Hamlin Park at 16006 15th Ave NE.

The City asks for the “good faith” use of the supplies and that you leave the site as you found it for the next citizen in need. Small shovels will be placed at the site but there is no guarantee they will be there when you need them so shovels are the responsibility of those preparing sandbags.

Detailed directions to the site

U-Fill Sand Bag Station at Hamlin Park: To get there you must enter Hamlin Park from the 15th Ave NE side at the NE 160th St traffic signal. Proceed east into the park and turn left into the first parking lot and then another left towards the trail head (back of parking lot). MAP

Next to the concrete block storage bin will be a pile of sand, empty sand bags, and filler tubes (cones).

If you have any questions or need further information please contact the City of Shoreline’s main line at 206-801-2700.
