Shoreline, WA to mark Education and Sharing Day, calling for renewed focus on moral and ethical education

Monday, April 15, 2024

Mayor Chris Roberts has proclaimed April 19, 2024, to be “Education and Sharing Day, Shoreline, WA”. With a growing mental health crisis and crisis of purpose among young people, Education and Sharing Day seeks to highlight the critical need for moral and ethical education.

Education and Sharing Day is a day of national commemoration that has been designated by every president beginning with Jimmy Carter in 1978, to promote and emphasize the importance of moral and ethical education.

It was championed by the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, known as the most influential Rabbi in modern history. Congress passed a joint resolution, and President Carter then signed it into law, designating the day of the Rebbe’s birthday as Education and Sharing Day.

In his correspondence with President Carter, the Rebbe laid out his vision of Education and Sharing Day as a time to focus on “Education in a broader and deeper sense — not merely as a process of imparting knowledge and training for a "better living," but for a "better life," with due emphasis on character building, and moral & ethical values.”

Each president since Carter, as well as numerous local legislatures, governors and mayors nationwide, annually recognize and proclaim Education and Sharing Day.

In President Biden’s 2022 proclamation, he expressed the impact such an education has on broader society. “The Rebbe’s work reminds us, in the words of the Prophet Amos, to “hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the gate.”
We each share a responsibility to live up to those words — in and out of the classroom — and to plant the seeds of love, kindness, and empathy in the hearts and minds of every child in America.

Everyone is encouraged to observe Education and Sharing Day through setting aside time to reflect on how to enhance the moral and ethical education of our youth and increasing in acts of goodness and kindness.

Sen. Murray negotiates major funding for child care and Head Start

Thursday, April 4, 2024

Across two major federal funding bills, Sen. Patty Murray has advocated for families and children.

Murray's local and national support includes important programs for children.

Murray, a former Shoreline preschool teacher, negotiated a bill that provides a $1 billion increase for child care and early learning programs within Federal Health and Human Services (HHS).

  • This includes $8.75 billion for the Child Care and Development Block Grant program (CCDBG)—a $725 million or 9% increase over fiscal year 2023, when Murray secured a 30% boost for the program—and
  • $12.27 billion for Head Start, a $275 million increase over last year’s funding level.

Sustained annual increases of federal investments in child care and Head Start are critical in tackling the child care crisis and helping to ensure more families can find and afford the quality, affordable child care and early childhood education options they need.

“Parents, small businesses, and just about everyone says again and again that child care is unaffordable and too hard to find in every part of our state,” said Senator Murray.
“I worked hard to secure a $1 billion boost for child care and early learning programs in this bill to help lower child care costs for more families in Washington state—we have a lot more that needs to get done, but I’ll keep pushing for progress every way I can.”

In addition, she accomplished the following:

Expanding Child Care Options for Military Families
  • In this year’s defense funding bill, Senator Murray secured $167 million to fully fund the Department of Defense’s (DOD) child care initiatives. This includes a $66.5 million increase in funding over fiscal year 2023 to support universal, full-day pre-K, which will double enrollment from 1,810 to 3,625 children of servicemembers. It also includes new resources to recruit, support, and retain staff at DOD’s child development centers—including $33 million to provide a 50% discount for the first child of center staff. It also invests an additional $20 million above the budget request in the renovation and repair of DOD’s child development centers.
  • Separately, Senator Murray secured $277 million in this year’s military construction funding bill to establish six new child development centers on installations to provide military families with more child care options—and she secured $59.5 million above the President’s budget request for the design of additional child development centers. Senator Murray authorized dedicated funding for the construction of child care facilities on military bases in 2019 through the NDAA and has delivered strong funding to support child care for servicemembers since then.
Protecting Child Care Options for Parents Pursuing a Higher Education
  • In this year’s LHHS bill, Senator Murray protected full funding for the Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) program, which helps low-income parents pursue a higher education by supporting campus-based child care programs. The bill provides $75 million for the program—protecting existing funding and rejecting House Republicans’ proposal to eliminate the program altogether.
Eliminating Barriers for Veterans in Need of Child Care While Getting Care
  • In this year’s Veterans Affairs funding bill, Senator Murray secured $23 million to expand the successful Child Care Pilot Program she established in 2010, which helps eliminate barriers for veterans in need of child care while attending medical appointments.
Easing Child Care Barriers for Parents Working in Congress
  • In this year’s legislative branch funding bill, Senator Murray secured language authorizing Senate offices to—for the first time—use their existing budgets to provide child care subsidies to staff to better ensure working parents can serve their communities by working in Congress.

2024 Student Mock Election is now open for all Washington K-12 students

Tuesday, February 6, 2024

OLYMPIA — K-12 students across the state can now participate in the 2024 Student Mock Election presented by the Office of the Secretary of State.

The Student Mock Election is a non-partisan, educational event that teaches children to be informed voters. Through the March 12 Presidential Primary, K-12 students in Washington state are welcome to participate by informing the major political parties who they think should be nominated for president.

“This is an opportunity for children and young adults to learn how easy and impactful voting is,” Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said. “I invite educators throughout the state to use the many free resources available to get students excited about civic engagement.”

The Office of the Secretary of State offers a free teacher toolkit to help educators host mock elections, which includes mock ballots, tabulation sheets, posters, Voter Pamphlets, lesson plan materials, and access to “I Voted” stickers. The participation dashboard will show student participation by school and grade level.

Students who are at least 16 can pre-register online or using a paper registration form to be automatically registered to vote when they become eligible. Those who will be 18 by November 5 can vote in this year’s Presidential Primary and August Primary elections.

“Our Student Mock Election helps prepare students for lifelong participation and teaches the importance of democracy in our country,” Secretary Hobbs said.

Washington’s Office of the Secretary of State oversees areas within state government including managing state elections, registering corporations and charities, and governing the use of the state flag and state seal.

The office also operates the State Archives and the State Library, documents extraordinary stories in Washington’s history through Legacy Washington, and administers the Combined Fund Drive for charitable giving by state employees and the Productivity Board state employee suggestion program to provide incentives for efficiency improvements. The Secretary of State also oversees the state’s Address Confidentiality Program to help protect survivors of crime.

Mathilda Hummel serves as a page in Washington State Senate

Friday, January 26, 2024

Sen. Jesse Salomon sponsored Mathilda Hummel as a Senate Page

OLYMPIA – Mathilda Hummel of Mountlake Terrace served as a page for the Washington State Senate during the second week of the 2024 legislative session. Sen. Jesse Salomon (D-Shoreline) sponsored her time at the Legislature.

The page program offers a hands-on opportunity for students to find out how state government works. During a week-long interactive learning experience, students are visited by guest speakers and get to draft their own bills. Students also get to explore the Capitol Campus by delivering papers for Senate staff.

Hummel, 14, is a student at Edmonds-Woodway High. She plays trumpet in her school’s concert band and enjoys ballet dancing. Hummel joined the page program because she was interested in government and law; an interest that intensified after her trip to Washington D.C. She is the daughter of Kristina Jipson and Thomas Hummel.

“I’ve enjoyed getting to know the security guards, the buildings, and seeing how everything works,” said Hummel.
Pages also create their own bill to be heard in a mock committee meeting. Hummel decided to work on legislation that would provide state funded pre-schools. Hummel has enjoyed her time in Olympia.

“I haven’t met anybody who has been unkind or difficult to talk to,” Hummel said.
For more information about the Senate Page Program, contact SenatePageProgram@leg.wa.gov.
