Shoreline Community College receives federal grant to develop study abroad program in Bolivia for nursing students

Shoreline Community College (SCC) is one of 34 U.S. colleges and universities in 28 U.S. states to be awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of State’s Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students (IDEAS) Program, which aims to develop and expand study abroad programs around the world.

“One of our goals is to better connect with our external and local international partners to best serve the diverse northern Seattle area.
"Opportunities like this not only support that goal but also provide wonderful learning opportunities for our faculty and students,” said SCC President Dr. Jack Kahn.

Of the 34 U.S. colleges and universities, eight are community colleges and 13 are minority-serving institutions. The selected proposals will develop new international partnerships, train faculty and staff, internationalize curriculum, engage diverse students in study abroad, broaden the destinations where U.S. students study, and create virtual and hybrid exchanges.

“Increasing and diversifying U.S. students going abroad for educational opportunities, as well as diversifying the places where they study, is a State Department priority,” said Lee Satterfield, Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs.

This IDEAS Program Award will allow Shoreline Community College to develop a new study abroad program for Washington community college nursing students.

The new program leverages a long-standing and successful study/service-learning abroad program in dental hygiene, led by SCC and our non-profit partner in Seattle and Bolivia, Smiles Forever.

“Study abroad programs have been particularly impacted by the pandemic and it is encouraging to see the federal government’s support in supporting their revival.
"U.S. students, particularly those from underrepresented groups, benefit tremendously from these opportunities,” said Samira Pardanani, Associate Vice President, International Education and Global Engagement.

This study abroad program will be unique among community college nursing programs, as study abroad experiences are largely inaccessible for nursing students.

Colleen Ferguson, Special Project Lead, International Engagement had this to say about the program,

“With the IDEAS Program Award, nursing faculty will be supported in developing a new service-learning program to Bolivia that will allow our nursing students the opportunity to practice their unique skills and gain valuable cross-cultural experience.”

The IDEAS Program is a program of the U.S Department of State with funding provided by the United States Government and supported in its implementation by World Learning.

Founded in 1964, Shoreline Community College offers more than 100 rigorous academic and professional/technical degrees and certificates to meet the lifelong learning needs of its diverse students and communities.

Rep. Gerry Pollet: Disability is not a choice - We have a constitutional obligation to fund every child’s education in Washington state

Sunday, May 28, 2023

Rep. Gerry Pollet. Photo from LSS>

We have a constitutional obligation to fund every child’s education in Washington state. Disability is not a choice.

However, the Legislature has capped how many children with disabilities it will fund education and disability services for and requires school districts to spend over $400 million a year from local levy money to pay for this portion of our “paramount duty.”

That’s why I developed House Bill 1436 with special education advocates, school districts and educators. Governor Inslee signed HB 1436 on May 11, to add $417 million in new support for special education during this biennium.

While the Senate did not agree with the House to eliminate the cap on how many students with disabilities the state will pay for in each district, we did significantly increase the cap to 15%. HB 1436 and the subsequent funding increase in the state operating budget is a MAJOR and historic step forward to fully supporting all students in our state with a high-quality public education.

But this bill only fills half of the gap and more work remains. I am hopeful that the legislature will support future proposals to completely remove the unconscionable cap because of the disproportional impact on students in our state.

Governor Inslee made it more difficult to have data on how many students have disabilities in each district by vetoing an equity study on the prevalence of disabilities amongst minorities and vulnerable populations. I’ll be working to restore funding for the equity study.

Rep. Gerry Pollet represents the 46th Legislative District, northeast Seattle

Just as the canopy of a forest shelters and nourishes all the plants within, our organization comes together to create an environment where each of our students can bloom and flourish with tutoring, STEM, and community building programs.

We are excited to bring together the different parts of the Canopy community that help us thrive.

Get your tickets today! canopyscholars.org/bloom

Join us to ensure that Canopy Scholars thrive!

Canopy Scholars* provides tutoring and STEM programs to a diverse population of Shoreline Elementary School students, prioritizing students participating in the National School Lunch Program.

A canopy is a living community of diverse types of trees growing together. They are sheltered from strong winds and storms, able to develop anchoring roots, branch into individual shapes, capture light and rain, produce leaves and seeds, and send water back into the atmosphere which creates rain.

At Canopy, we provide an environment for students to grow into their full potential as scholars through tutoring, STEM, and community building programs. We have a stellar team of tutors as diverse as our students, and we build relationships at every level – with students, parents, teachers.
  • TUTORING — Tutors work alongside students to strengthen math and reading skills and tackle homework challenges. Students receive more than 100 hours of one-on-one tutoring.
  • STEM — STEM programs help students strengthen skills in science, technology, engineering and math in a fun and creative environment.
  • COMMUNITY — A key part of Canopy is the fun community that develops between students, their parents, and their tutors as they grow to become scholars.
We invite you to join us in making a real difference in the lives of students today! Visit our website canopyscholars.org

Bitter Lake Community Center extends tutoring program with The Polytech through the end of the school year

Sunday, May 7, 2023

Tori and Sofia play foosball at the community center
The Polytech, a private high school that continues working with students through age 26 to assist with the transition to college, career, and adulthood, has partnered with Bitter Lake Community Center (BLCC) to offer tutoring after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

BLCC has long offered a range of athletic and social programs and was pleased to begin offering professional tutoring in January of 2023.

They have now renewed through the end of the school year to give students the extra boost many need as we get closer to summer break.

Cynthia Etelamaki, director at BLCC, eagerly set up the tutoring option after other successful collaborations with The Polytech.
“We have been wanting to offer more academics to our students, and this is a great complement to our athletic programs that are so well attended. It gives students more support to complete homework while they’re already here.”

David Garlock is the right teacher for the job. He’s certified, has a master’s degree, and decades of experience teaching, but most of all, he has the ability to break down assignments into small, manageable pieces. He provides customized instruction so that students understand the material and are more confident in their abilities.

David teaches a wide range of subjects at The Polytech, including most levels of math, Physics, Earth Science, Chemistry, US History, English, and Spanish. He’s a great fit for drop-in tutoring because he’s so knowledgeable on so many subjects, and also joins in card games if everyone is caught up on assignments.

“This guy is super good at math,” said high school student, Tori W. “It’s like he’s on the same wavelength as me and can explain in a way I get it.”

BLCC staff Adam Johnson and Mariyam Abdulkarim often attend the tutoring sessions and because students know them from other activities, they become a bridge to the tutoring program. When a student expresses stress about an assignment, they can refer them to work with David. Other students drop in as needed.

Thanks to funding from Career and Education Access, a local non-profit working with The Polytech, there is no cost to Bitter Lake Community Center, parents, or students, and no appointment is necessary to attend the Tuesday/Thursday tutoring sessions. For more information, contact Reza Khastou at reza.khastou@thepolytech.com

Washington now has a state dinosaur - the Suciasaurus rex

Saturday, May 6, 2023

Gov. Jay Inslee signs a bill proclaiming Suciasaurus rex as Washington’s official state dinosaur.

A large, two-legged, meat-eating therapod once roamed Washington state, as paleontologists discovered in 2012.

Paleontologists at the Burke with dinosaur bone found in Washington state

They found a partial thigh bone for a dinosaur similar to but smaller than a Tyrannosaurus on the shores of Sucia Island State Park.

The Burke Museum reported that "The fossil is a partial left thigh bone of a theropod dinosaur, the group of two-legged, meat-eating dinosaurs that includes Velociraptor, Tyrannosaurus rex and modern birds. It was found along the shores of Sucia Island State Park in the San Juan Islands.

"The fossil is approximately 80 million years old and is from the Late Cretaceous period. During that time, the rocks that today form Sucia Island were likely further south. How much further south is a topic of scientific debate, with locations ranging between present day Baja California, Mexico, and northern California. Earthquakes and other geologic forces that constantly reshape our planet moved the rocks north to their present-day location."

A decade later, a class project to teach kids how a bill becomes a law led to Gov. Jay Inslee signing a bill to proclaim the Suciasaurus rex as Washington’s official state dinosaur

Students from Elmhurst Elementary in Tacoma engaged their legislator Rep. Melanie Morgan to introduce the bill - both the students and Rep. Morgan were present for the signing.

Meridian Park students release tiny Coho salmon into Lake Ballinger

Monday, May 1, 2023

Two Meridian Park students with cups of tiny salmon to release into Lake Ballinger

Story and photos by Jim Siscel

On Sunday afternoon, April 30, 2023 Abby Lane invited Meridian Park Elementary School students to Lake Ballinger to release the Coho salmon that she has been responsible for raising at the school.

An orange bucket full of tiny salmon

Ms. Lane received the salmon eggs in early January. The eggs hatched in early February. She has been feeding them until now when they are big enough to survive in Lake Ballinger.

Netting the little salmon to put in plastic cup

Approximately fifty students, with their parents, came to the lake to assist in releasing the salmon.

Abby Lane (center with sunglasses)

It was an exciting activity for all who attended.

Many questions by attendees were answered about what would now happen in the next stage of the salmon life cycle for the little fish.

Releasing the salmon at the lake edge

The students took their cups of salmon and released them right at the edge of the lake.

An older student walked into the lake (with parent’s permission) to release her Coho salmon.

Lake Ballinger is directly north of Shoreline, in Snohomish county. Waters from the lake flow through a series of creeks on their way to Lake Washington.
