Let them unwrap the possibilities of education this holiday season

Wednesday, December 14, 2022

By Michael Meotti

Have you ever experienced anxiety trying to get that last-minute holiday gift for someone? It might have even been a Turbo-Man action figure or the coveted Tickle Me Elmo. While there is much joy in this season, there is often a degree of pressure to find the perfect gift for everyone in our lives.

If you’d like to beat the rush at the mall and the endless scrolling on Amazon, consider funding a 529 education savings plan instead.

529 plans make it easy and affordable to plan ahead for the cost of higher education. They can be used for nearly every level and type of schooling you can think of - from a four-year college or university, to technical or trade school and community college. Use it on tuition, books, computers, room and board, or even the costs associated with an apprenticeship. Regardless of your child or grandchild’s changing interests, saving in a 529 plan can give you peace of mind.

Here in Washington, you have two outstanding options. One is the Guaranteed Education Tuition program, known for nearly 25 years as GET. GET is a prepaid tuition program, where you purchase tuition units at today’s price, and those units can be used years down the road, no matter what type of education your student chooses to pursue or how costs change in the future. With tuition rates rising over time, locking in current rates now offers predictability and certainty for you and your student.

The other option we offer Washington families is the DreamAhead plan
. This plan offers a selection of investment portfolios that you can tailor to your student’s age and your risk tolerance. You can start an account with a contribution as small as $25. From there, your investment has the opportunity to grow through interest and appreciation. Once you’re ready to use it, the money can be applied to almost any education-related expense.

However you choose to save, keep in mind that a contribution to a student’s 529 plan makes a great gift suggestion to doting family members and friends.

We hope you consider a 529 as part of this year’s gift-giving. A contribution to an education savings account is a gift that will keep on giving for years and years to come. Visit 529.wa.gov to learn more.

Gov. Inslee: Washington students leaving money on the table by forgetting the FAFSA

Monday, October 24, 2022

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opened on October 1, 2022. Students nationwide are applying for aid that might support their college education or career training.

Many students in Washington state are missing out - the state has the third-lowest FAFSA completion rate in the country.

About $50 million in federal aid has been left on the table by Washington students that never filed a FAFSA.

To catch up, the Washington Student Achievement Council has begun several marketing campaigns to get the word out: there's money available, and you must file your FAFSA to get it.

Washington has some of the most generous student aid programs in the country. Low- and middle-income families often discover that the cost of college is either completely or significantly covered after aid. State programs also support students that choose technical education or apprenticeships.

The FAFSA is complex and time-consuming, but completing it may yield substantial reward for students planning their futures.

“The number-one thing that students can do for themselves is to sit down with their families and complete the FAFSA," says James Miller, dean of admission at Seattle University.

Student loan debt forgiveness program blocked by the courts

Friday, October 21, 2022

Photo by Tim Gouw on Unsplash
According to reporting the The Washington Post (reprinted in The Seattle Times), a Federal appeals court has blocked the immediate cancellation of student loans to consider a request filed by six Republican-led states to stop the program.

A federal appeals court on Friday evening blocked the imminent cancellation of federal student loans under President Joe Biden’s debt relief program, days after millions of borrowers began applying for up to $20,000 in forgiveness.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit granted an administrative stay while it considers a request for an injunction filed by a coalition of six Republican-led states seeking to block the forgiveness program.

Yesterday we published information on the loan program from our Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit will make a decision on whether or not to lift the stay but the timeline is unknown. 22 million people have already filed for relief.

Pramila Jayapal: Beta application for student loan debt is officially live

Thursday, October 20, 2022

From Congresswoman Pramilia Jayapal

BIG NEWS: The beta application for student loan debt cancelation is officially live and takes less than two minutes to submit!

Please note: this is a beta application and may close and reopen throughout the week.

Recently, President Biden announced his administration will be canceling $20,000 of federal student loan debt for Pell Grant recipients and $10,000 of federal debt for other borrowers, reaching a total of 43 million borrowers.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal
This is a massive step in the right direction, and as the Chair of the Progressive Caucus, something I have personally been fighting for.

With the President’s action, approximately 20 million people will see their loans fully canceled, and an additional 23 million will see relief with a portion of their debt canceled.

AND it will help to address the root cause of the issue by capping interest for current and future loans at 5 percent of income, half of the current rate.

This means that those who still have a balance on their loan after this action will be able to lower their average annual payment by more than $1,000.

Be sure to get your application in today and subscribe to get email updates so I can keep you updated as we learn more about the timeline of when you'll see this money!

The 2022 Student Mock Election is now open for all Washington K-12 students

Monday, October 10, 2022

Middle school students who participated in a mock election
OLYMPIA — The Office of the Secretary of State is calling on students and teachers across Washington to participate in the 2022 Student Mock Election.

From now until the November 8, 2022 General Election, the Student Mock Election is a nonpartisan educational initiative that teaches K-12 students how elections work and how to become informed voters.

Students have the opportunity to vote on actual races and measures pertinent to their daily lives, or an alternate version with fictional issues.

Ballots, vote tabulation sheets, and Voters’ Pamphlets are available for download and printing. Other free resources include “I Voted” stickers (which must be ordered by Nov. 8) and the curriculum book Teaching Elections in Washington State

The lessons meet state and Common Core standards, and satisfy the civics coursework required for graduation. Classroom-based assessments are included with each lesson.

“The Student Mock Election is an interactive, educational program that helps students learn more about our elections and enables them to become more informed and involved citizens,” said Assistant Secretary of State Trova O’Heffernan.
“Teachers have access to several unique resources and tools to help teach young people how to make civic engagement a lifelong habit.”

In Washington state, 16- and 17-year-olds can sign up as Future Voters and be automatically registered to vote when they become eligible. More information about the Future Voter program, including qualifications and how to register, is available here.

National Voter Education Week (NVEW) is a nonpartisan voter education campaign held the first week of October that equips voters with the tools, information, and confidence they need to cast their ballots.

Gov. Inslee: Student Debt Relief Plan

Sunday, August 28, 2022

Graphic courtesy of @POTUS on Twitter
On Tuesday, President Biden announced details for the Student Debt Relief Plan, forgiving up to $20,000 in debt for Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education, and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation for non-Pell Grant recipients.

This forgiveness could impact 40 million people across the nation and half a million Washingtonians, providing relief for low and middle-class borrowers.

The administration also granted an extension of the pause on federal student loan repayment through December 31, 2022. Those potentially eligible for the PSLF waiver can visit this website by October 31 to see if they qualify.

"My student loan plan makes sure working people have a shot at a college degree without the fear of being saddled with insurmountable debt," said Biden.

There are three parts to the debt relief plan:
  1. Final extension of the student loan repayment pause to Dec. 31.
  2. Targeted debt relief to low- and middle-income families.
  3. A student loan system that is more manageable for current and future borrowers.
"This is providing relief to hundreds of thousands of Washingtonians. Thank you to the Biden administration for delivering on your promise and helping to fuel the economy," said Gov. Jay Inslee.
