Shorecrest graduate accepted into prestigious US Naval Academy

Andrew Miner headed for
Naval Academy
Shorecrest recent graduate Andrew Miner will depart for the United States Naval Academy this week for “Plebe Summer.”

While most 2022 Shorecrest High School graduates will be relaxing and hanging out with friends before heading off to college, Andrew Miner will be a “plebe” rigorously training for his first year at the United States Naval Academy.

Andrew was a varsity cross country runner, swimmer and earned his Eagle Scout during his high school years.

Miner received the notification of his appointment to the Naval Academy in January and graduated from Shorecrest on June 12th which left him only two weeks before he leaves home to begin “Plebe Summer.”

Over a period of six weeks, Plebe Summer is where freshmen, or “plebe midshipmen,” go through “moral, physical, and mental” training that prepares them for their first academic year at the Naval Academy. This means no visual media, no internet, no music, and only three planned phone calls during Plebe Summer.

A remarkably prestigious institution, the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, is one of the most difficult universities in the country to get accepted to, with only an eight percent acceptance rate.

According to Niche.com, the Naval Academy is ranked No. 23 for their 2022 list of hardest colleges to get into, with some of the requirements being a high SAT score, passing a fitness assessment, and then receiving a nomination from the President, Vice President or a Member of Congress. Miner received a nomination from U.S. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal.

Miner set his sights on applying to the Naval Academy in middle school and officially started the application process during his junior year of high school. He plans to study political science at the Naval Academy and to go into aviation after graduating.

Student loan debt discharged for students of Corinthian (Everest) colleges

Attorney General Bob Ferguson today announced that 16,850 Washingtonians who attended any school owned by Corinthian Colleges, a for-profit college that engaged in deceptive conduct, will receive $157.9 million in relief.

The U.S. Department of Education discharged $5.8 billion nationwide in student loans for Corinthian College students across the country.

Ferguson had been calling for this action from the federal government since 2016.

He asserted, and the federal government finally agreed, that every borrower who attended Corinthian was subject to illegal conduct.

This discharge applies automatically — borrowers do not need to do anything to receive relief. This relief applies to all remaining loans for Corinthian Colleges, including for borrowers who have not yet applied for a “borrower defense” discharge.

Corinthian owned and operated Everest College campuses in Everett, Fife, Tacoma, Bremerton, Renton, Seattle and Vancouver until February of 2015, when they were sold to Zenith.

“Washingtonians’ student loan crisis is now $158 million smaller,” Ferguson said. “This is justice. The thousands of Washingtonians who were harmed by Corinthian’s illegal conduct deserve this relief from crushing student loan debt.
"Today’s outcome is the culmination of years of investigation and collaboration between the federal government, my office, and other state attorneys general. Betsy DeVos and the Trump Administration had every chance to take this action, and they refused. I applaud the Biden Administration for doing the right thing.”

Ferguson has previously called on the Department of Education to discharge federal student loans for former Corinthian students. In December of 2016, Ferguson sent a letter to department officials calling for automatic loan discharges for victims of Corinthian’s fraud. In 2017, Ferguson, along with other state attorneys general, submitted a joint request seeking group discharge for Corinthian borrowers in their states.

Annual enrollment for GET closes May 31, 2022

Saturday, April 30, 2022

Washington families still have time to start saving for future education costs with Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET), the state’s 529 prepaid tuition program. The 2021-2022 annual enrollment period closes on May 31, 2022.

For the first time ever, the purchase price of a GET unit exactly matches the payout value, meaning savers in Washington have a historic opportunity to buy tomorrow’s tuition at today’s price. Once a GET account is open, the last day to add units to an existing account at the current price of $114.01 is June 25, 2022.

The State of Washington guarantees that a family’s GET savings will keep pace with in-state tuition and state-mandated fees. While GET account values keep pace with in-state tuition, beneficiaries have the freedom to follow their ambitions wherever they choose, as GET can be used at nearly any public or private university, community college, or technical school in the country. GET units can even be used to pay the costs associated with apprenticeships and for student loan repayments.

“Whether your student’s future plans include college, trade school, or another form of career-readiness training, GET is a great way to ensure those dreams become reality,” said Luke Minor, director of Washington College Savings Plans.

The Guaranteed Education Tuition (GET) program opened in 1998, and since then, thousands of Washington families have saved billions of dollars toward their students’ future higher education expenses. To date, GET has distributed more than $1.3 billion to 60,000+ students who have used their GET accounts to attend higher education in all 50 U.S. states and at least 15 countries worldwide.

The GET program is one of two college savings options offered by Washington College Savings Plans (WA529). The DreamAhead College Investment Plan was launched in 2018 to create additional choice and flexibility for families as they plan for college costs. WA529’s website (wastate529.wa.gov) offers details, charts, planning tools and answers to questions that families may have about either program. Accounts can be opened online, and the GET Contact Center is ready to help at (800) 955-2318 or GETInfo@wsac.wa.gov.
