Some passes will open Sunday - WSU cancels classes Monday and Tuesday

Sunday, January 9, 2022

Update: Sunday, January 9, 2022- 4:00pm
Snoqualmie & Blewett passes will reopen at 5 p.m. today with a 45 mph speed limit & traction tires advised. Priority is to get freight traffic moving; recreational/general traffic should continue to delay travel.

WSDOT made good progress clearing Snoqualmie, Stevens, White and Blewett passes on Saturday.

There’s still a lot of work to go, but Snoqualmie and Blewett will reopen sometime Sunday. It will take longer to get Stevens and White reopened.

Snoqualmie: Using plows, blowers, and graders, they continue to clear snow and make sure hillsides are stable from earlier avalanche concerns. They are also clearing catch basins to allow for drainage from melting snow & rain

One of the tow plows - Plowie McPlow Plow - was moved from Spokane to Snoqualmie Pass to assist with the work. They are on track to reopen on Sunday. They will have a better sense for time late Sunday morning.

Blewett: Avalanche control was successful and crews continue to use a blower and plows to clear the highway. Davenport-based crews sent a blower to help. They are optimistic Blewett will open Sunday and will have a better sense for timing late Sunday AM

Stevens: Several snow slides produced areas of snow that stand 30-35 feet tall. One lane is open to allow crews further access for avalanche control and clearing work. Snow has built up in rare locations on the mountain and they may do avalanche control from a helicopter to knock those hazards down Monday.

While not Stevens Pass, US 2 Tumwater Canyon east of the pass affects their ability to open Stevens. There have been 208 snow slides in Tumwater Canyon - about 25 slides per mile.

They continue to monitor conditions and work where it is safe to do so to get this stretch of highway open. At this time, it is unlikely Stevens Pass or Tumwater Canyon will reopen before Tuesday

White: While there is no remaining avalanche concern, there is still a substantial amount of snow and debris, including trees, rocks, etc., to remove. Crews have brought in an excavator to help but it is unlikely White Pass will open before Monday

WSDOT says "This has been a long, tough process and again, we appreciate everyone's patience while our crews work as fast and hard as they safely can to reopen. We will have another update Sunday morning."

Washington State University - Pullman

In the meantime, with so many of their students unable to get to school, the WSU Pullman campus will cancel classes on Monday, January 10 and Tuesday, January 11, 2022 to allow students time to return to Pullman safely following recent highway closures.

All other WSU Pullman facilities and operations will be open normal business hours on Monday and Tuesday.

Wednesday, December 8, 2021

Indigenous peoples have had formal systems of education since time immemorial. The establishment of policies and processes which allow federally recognized tribes to grant viable high school credit for enrolled members increases sovereignty, self-determination, and is likely to increase Native student success in the public school system.

In our free webinar this Thursday, December 9 at 12:30 pm, a statewide panel of Native students, educators, and policymakers will discuss how our schools can better serve the educational needs of Native students. We will focus on how the state legislature can support Native students by allowing their tribes to grant them viable high school credits for engaging in cultural curriculum and enrichment activities.

OSPI Special Education Leader Glenna Gallo nominated for Federal Special Education position

Saturday, November 13, 2021

Glenna Gallo nominated for federal post
The U.S. Department of Education announced that President Biden has nominated Glenna Gallo to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS).

Gallo has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education Services for the Washington state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) since July 2017.

In her time at OSPI, Gallo spearheaded Washington’s work on inclusionary practices, advocated for the greatest legislative investment to support schools in serving students with disabilities in state history, and built a culture of trust and unity among the special education community and OSPI.

“Glenna is a phenomenal leader and advocate for students with disabilities and their families, and though this is an enormous loss for Washington state, I know she is the best person to be leading this work at the federal level,” said Superintendent of Public Instruction Chris Reykdal.

“It is such an honor to be nominated by President Biden for this role,” Gallo said. “I look forward to the opportunity to continue supporting people with disabilities, their families, and school district and state personnel with special education and rehabilitation services.”

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services supports children, youth, and adults with disabilities, working toward improved outcomes and opportunities for meaningful employment and postsecondary success.

Gallo’s nomination requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate, which is expected to take place within the next couple of months.

Sen. David Frockt announces retirement at end of term

Wednesday, October 6, 2021

Sen. David Frockt D-46 will retire
at end of term December 2022
After more than a decade of service in the Washington state Legislature, Sen. David Frockt (D-Seattle) announced Tuesday that he will retire from the Senate when his current term ends in December 2022 rather than seek re-election to a fourth term.

Sen. Frockt represents the 46th District which include Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Lake City, Pinehurst, Northgate, Wedgwood, Windermere, and Laurelhurst.

“When I first ran for office in 2010, I saw a need for new leadership in our community,” said Frockt.
“Representing the people of North Seattle, Lake Forest Park and Kenmore since then has been a distinct honor where I have been afforded the chance to work on some of the greatest challenges facing our state.
"But I came to this job with the firm conviction that the privilege of public service does not confer a right to a position that one holds forever, and for me, the time has come for renewal.”

In the Legislature, Frockt, now 52, earned a reputation as an effective advocate for progressive causes who could work across party lines, sponsoring successful legislation on many of the Senate Democrats’ top priority issues— including higher education, gun violence, health care and the environment.

Early in his career, Frockt served in a series of caucus leadership positions including deputy Democratic leader. In more recent years, he served as vice chair of the Ways and Means Committee with primary responsibility for the capital budget, where he funded projects to provide more affordable housing, increase access to behavioral health services, build out Washington’s community and four-year colleges, and clean up and conserve Washington’s natural environment.

In the 2021 budget, he created a new rapid housing fund that is helping to provide new units right now in Seattle and around the state. He was also the sponsor and architect of Cascade Care, the nation’s first state-based public option for health care insurance coverage.

“Sen. Frockt has been an outstanding legislator for our city and our state,” said Rep. Frank Chopp (D-Seattle).
“He came to the Legislature for the right reasons. He doesn’t look for headlines. Instead, he looks for opportunities to act in ways that will help people who need it the most. He leaves a tremendous legacy in many areas, especially in affordable housing and health care.
"Thousands of low-income and homeless people have benefited from his work. His leadership in helping create the first public option in health care, Cascade Care, will have a tremendous positive impact on so many people’s lives. His departure will be a huge loss for the people of Washington state.”

Frockt played significant roles in many of the most pressing challenges that Washington addressed in the last decade, serving as chair of the bipartisan committee that communicated with the Supreme Court on education funding after the McCleary decision; on the Joint Legislative Task Force on the Use of Deadly Force in Community Policing, where his amendment to move the state toward an objective reasonable officer standard was eventually incorporated into laws passed by the voters and the legislature; and most recently as chair of the Senate’s bipartisan COVID-19 Special Committee on Economic Recovery.

Many of the committee’s recommendations were eventually incorporated into law or into the state budget.

In 2015, he introduced the state’s first proposed legislation on Extreme Risk Protection Orders, which, while blocked in the Senate, eventually became law after being passed by the voters in nearly every legislative district in the state.

He led in the creation of a new college savings program that gives families additional options to pay for higher education.

And he sponsored a major reform of the oil tax, leading to substantial new funding for toxic cleanups across the state. All told, nearly 60 bills that Frockt either prime-sponsored or carried in the Senate become law during his tenure. Many of these bills were passed while Democrats were the minority party in the Legislature, a demonstration of his ability to work across party lines to get things accomplished.

Prior to joining the Legislature, Frockt served as an aide on Capitol Hill to a U.S. Representative. After stints in the private sector, university research and law school, Frockt practiced law in Seattle for 13 years. Additionally, he served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 2000.

In a letter to constituents today, Frockt wrote,

“I recognize, as we all do, the many real problems we still face—from climate change to health care to continued gun violence, among many others. I intend to continue to play a role in civic life to advance solutions. I look forward to finishing out my term in 2022 representing you as vigorously as I can to help solve our common problems."
