Heroes' Café Shoreline hears about service dog program for veterans

Thursday, February 23, 2023

U.S. Army veteran with his service dog
By Doug Cerretti

Heroes' Café Shoreline was proud to host Don Lachman, US Army veteran, who spoke about his work with Brigadoon Service Dogs, February 14, 2023.

Brigadoon Service Dogs, located in Bellingham, WA, provides trained service dogs for veterans, children, and adults with physical, developmental, and behavioral health disabilities to promote a more independent and enriched life.

Don has been associated with Brigadoon Service Dogs for 15 years as a board member and volunteer veterans' advisor. Founded in 2004, Brigadoon Service Dogs has placed over 70 service dogs and has achieved accreditation with Assistance Dogs International, the industry professional standard for service dog programs.

Don explained to approximately 70 Heroes' Café attendees that there are three types of support dogs, service dogs, therapy dogs and emotional support dogs.

Support dogs have the highest level of training and are the only ones that have complete access with their handlers even in places where “no dogs are allowed” and in airlines for example.

Service animals are trained to work or perform tasks for people with disabilities. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. The dog’s training is tailored to their future handler’s needs, such as retrieving objects, helping to manage anxiety and stress, and improving mobility and turning on lights or opening doors.

Support dogs are highly trained and well disciplined, in laymen terms, they pass the “squirrel test” whereas lessor trained would not. The best breeds for service dogs are Smooth Collies, Golden Labs, Standard Poodles and Labrador Retrievers. Don mentioned that Poodles seems to be the smartest. Interestingly, offspring of support dogs turn out to be good candidates for service dog training.

Don with service dog candidate “Lil Donnie”
Brigadoon Service Dogs initiated a program in 2012 for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

Veterans who are diagnosed with these conditions have a difficult time handling the stress and the memories of the events which affected their ability to perform day to day functions, interact normally with family and friends and maintain gainful employment.

The name of this program is CHI – Canines and Heroes' for Independence. When teamed with a well-mannered service dog, the veteran is able to receive a vitally important reality affirmation when the dog is summoned. Tactile stimulation can be very calming in stressful situations.

In addition, the dogs can be trained to nudge his partner to “snap” the veteran out of a frozen moment caused by anxiety, or wake him up from a nightmare or night terrors by turning on a light.

In public situations, the veteran can give a cue for the dog to stand between himself and other people to reduce his anxiety.

Service dogs are supplied at no cost to veterans.

Incarcerated veterans work to train service dogs
In a very unique program, Brigadoon Service Dogs manages four prison programs with the Washington Department of Corrections at Cedar Creek Corrections Center in Littlerock, WA, Stafford Creek Corrections Center in Aberdeen, WA, Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, WA and Coyote Ridge Corrections Center in Connell, WA.

In these programs the dogs are trained by inmates under the supervision of a Brigadoon trainer.

Each candidate dog has training and behavior benchmarks. The dogs reside with the inmates, who are responsible for their care, including grooming.

The training program at Stafford Creek Corrections Center is unique in that incarcerated veterans serve as trainers for dogs that will go to a veteran. The focus is on raising and training service dogs for veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iran who are suffering from PTSD, TBI and/or mobility issues.

This program benefits many – the animals who are trained to become service dogs, the client that the dog is placed will gain confidence, independence and self-worth, and the inmate who is given an opportunity to learn new skills that can lead to gainful employment on release. It’s Veterans helping Veterans.

Don said that many of these inmates become some of the best trainers. In fact, Brigadoon Service Dogs recently hired one of these veteran inmate trainers when he was released.

It takes 16 months to two years to train a service dog at a cost of around $30,000. Brigadoon Service Dogs raises funds through grants, private donors, veteran organizations, an annual auction, hosted fundraisers and Brigadoon Biscuits.

Starr Sutherland, Jr. Post 227 of The American Legion in Shoreline, WA is providing funds to feed two dogs being trained by veteran inmates that will be given to a veteran in need. For more information go to https://www.brigadoondogs.org

Heroes' Café is a monthly gathering for all veterans to focus on fostering positive outreach, interaction, and welfare within their neighboring community.

Heroes Cafe Shoreline meets the second Tuesday of every month from 9:00 am to 1:00pm at the Seattle Scottish Rite Center, 1207 N 152nd St, Shoreline WA 98133. Veterans, Family, Friends and the Community are welcome.

New veterinary clinic opens in Richmond Beach - Grand Opening event Saturday

Friday, September 23, 2022

Dr. Jeb Mortimer, doctor-owner: Jeb has been with SVA since 2000 and became an owner soon after. His veterinary interests are many and his curiosity and drive to learn more is part of what keeps SVA at the forefront of veterinary medicine.

Richmond Beach Animal Hospital opened Monday, September 19, 2022 at 1860 NW 195th St, Shoreline, WA 98177 The public is invited to their grand opening event on Saturday, September 24, 2022. RSVP here: richmondbeachvet.com

Drs. Jeb and Kristine Mortimer will be there to meet the community. Kristie and Jeb met in veterinary school and have four children, a dog, two cats, various chickens, and usually have some variety of “pocket pet” as well.

Seattle Veterinary Associates is excited to announce the opening of our newest animal hospital which is located in Shoreline.

Doctor’s hours are available by appointment now. We are welcoming the public to our grand opening event on Saturday, September 24th from 11am until 3pm.

Dr. Kristine Mortimer, Associate Doctor (and Jeb’s wife). Kristie worked in emergency veterinary medicine for many years at a practice called ACCES which was purchased by BluePearl and subsequently closed. Since then she has worked for SVA as a relief veterinarian as well as pioneering our telemedicine appointment program during the pandemic. With the opening of the RBAH location she will finally be seeing patients in person routinely.

During the event there will be a variety of beverage options as well as food, including some curated menu options from the newly opened Le Petit Paquet restaurant across the street.

Doctors and staff will be on hand to provide tours and answer questions. Anyone interested in attending is encouraged to RSVP at richmondbeachvet.com

Seattle Veterinary Associates (SVA) was founded in 1971 under the leadership of four veterinarians who were dissatisfied with both the quality and range of medical services available in the area.

They built a company that has endured for over 50 years while remaining in the hands of doctor-owners who live locally and practice in the clinics they own. That personal engagement is part of what makes both being an employee and a client of SVA a special experience.

Come meet us and see why we’re different!

And from the Renton Police Department

Many of you have seen on the local news and Crime Stoppers that a dog was stolen out of a car in Shoreline this past Friday night. ”Mandu” unfortunately had to be with these two miscreants for the last couple of days.

Early this morning, one of our eagle eyed community members spotted the stolen car, the two suspects, and Mandu and promptly call 911.

One of our officers arrived on the scene and from the Crime Stoppers bulletin immediately recognized the stolen car, suspects and of course Mandu (I mean, come on….who can ever forget a cute little face like that). Additional officers arrived on the scene and rescued Mandu. The two suspects were taken into custody and booked on a variety of charges.

And from David Rose Q13 Crime Stoppers

FOUND: A viewer says she my story on the theft of Mandu in Shoreline and recognized the  suspects. She called Renton Police and submitted a tip to Cime Stoppers.  Officers responded, arrested the suspects and rescued Mandu.   Thank you to the tipster and Renton Police for their quick response!

I called the tipster to thank her. She says she has had her car stolen 5x. “I'm always checking super sketchy activity and doing my due diligence to help others not experience what I'm going through. We all have to do our part!!”

A wonderful day at the 2022 Old Dog Haven Festival

All photos by Wayne Pridemore

We had a truly wonderful day on July 16, 2022 at Cromwell Park in Shoreline!

Many thanks to our dedicated Board of Directors for organizing this amazing event and to all the volunteers, sponsors, donors and attendees who made it such a success.

We have not been able to gather (in person) to celebrate old dogs for two years and our Board wanted to put together something very special to honor our dogs and all our wonderful supporters.

Jimmy Buffett groupies!
They decided to change it up this first year back and have a Festival to celebrate being together and being able to provide homes for senior dogs in need.

The event was a tremendous success! We had nearly 500 people in attendance and far surpassed our fundraising goals.

"Pie" with companion Dawn Ford
Dawn owns The Barkery - a food truck for dogs
and created all the recipes for the treats

There were a variety of carnival games/events, tasty food trucks, lots of vendors with samples, an amazing silent auction, and a marvelous collection of old (and young) dogs and their humans.

Our sincere thanks to all those who made this happen and all who attended to support old dogs!

About Old Dog Haven

Old Dog Haven is a small nonprofit group using a large network of foster homes to provide a loving safe home for abandoned senior dogs in western Washington.

When we have room and the means, we take these dogs into our homes. We adopt out those dogs with a reasonable life-expectancy. We care for the rest as members of the family in permanent foster homes (what we call “Final Refuge”) for as long as they have good quality of life. In addition, we try to assist owners in finding new homes for their senior dogs through our website and referrals.

Seattle Humane rises to the challenge of 60 dogs and puppies, possibly exposed to parovirus

Tuesday, May 17, 2022

Seattle Humane routinely takes in animals from disasters all over the United States. The affected areas empty out their shelters to make room for displaced pets and send them to the Humane Society in Bellevue where they find homes all over the Greater Seattle area.

This story is about a special challenge the Humane Society faced.

It’s been all hands (and paws) on deck at Seattle Humane these past few days with our latest Lifesaver Rescue transfer from out of state. The truck was just hours away when the driver discovered one of the puppies on board was very sick. A stop at a nearby veterinary clinic confirmed everybody’s worst fears. The puppy tested positive for parvovirus and, due to its very poor condition, was humanely euthanized. Back at the shelter, the news spread fast.

A truck carrying over 60 dogs was headed our way — more than half of them puppies who may have been exposed to a highly infectious and deadly disease.

“We couldn't send all of these dogs and puppies back. The dedicated rescues, fosters and shelter workers who put this transport together would have been left with an impossible task,” said Seattle Humane Intake Director Jessica Charlton.

So we formed a plan and broke out the PPE. Local rescue Saving Great Animals could take in three of the puppies. We ended up taking in 7 adult dogs and 37 puppies, ranging in age from two weeks to six months of age. Watch this video of their arrival. Three full dorms at the shelter were set up as isolation wards for the dogs, a critical step in preventing the spread of parvovirus to the rest of the shelter population.

Several puppies ended up testing positive and are currently receiving the fluids, medications and careful monitoring needed to survive this deadly illness.

Late yesterday, we put out an urgent call for foster parents for the exposed puppies that need to be quarantined for the next two weeks. More than 200 members of the Rescue Squad have contacted us in the last 24 hours!

"This could have been a major catastrophe for many of the pets on board that truck. But all of our teams hustled and the response from the public to step up and foster these pups just blew me away," said Chief of Animal Care Juli Ross.

While these pups are covered for foster homes, we’ll see many more sick – and healthy – puppies and kittens in the coming months. You can help by signing up to be a foster parent! We've put everything you need to know here. Can't foster, but still want to help? Check out our Amazon wish list for foster pets.

Thank you, Rescue Squad!

Missing dog may have been spotted in Shoreline

Sunday, January 9, 2022

Storm is an Alaskan Klee Kai - a mini-Husky
A long-missing dog may have been spotted in Shoreline recently, near Costco at N 200th St.

On August 28, 2021, Storm was in a fenced yard in the Mount Baker area of Seattle, with his owners and their 9 day old baby in the house. Someone let him out of the yard, possibly the group of kids who then chased him as far as Franklin High School on Mount Baker Blvd.

His owners Jessica and Troy have been looking for him ever since. In the process, she has become an expert on lost dogs and how to find them.

Storm is wearing a black and teal harness
Storm is a distinctive looking dog. He is an Alaskan Klee Kai (mini husky), and he is wearing a black and teal harness.

She has had tantalizing clues, as reports have come in, leading her search northward.

Someone may have spotted him at the Shoreline Costco (Aurora and 200th) on Jan 1, 2022 around 2-2:30pm.
They say they saw a tiny husky who was curious but scared and when approached it ran across 200th toward some apartments. She said she was certain the dog was wearing a teal harness which is what my dog was wearing when he went missing.

Lost dog found and is back home

Sunday, January 2, 2022

Zoe is resting after her two day adventure. Photo by Ethan.
Zoe, the Australian cattle dog, is back home with her owner after two nights outside.

Her owner, Ethan, went out for a few hours on New Year's Eve and when he returned, Zoe was gone. He's presuming that she was frightened by fireworks and bolted.

She was out Friday night. The next day, in response to multiple posts on social media, including the Shoreline Area News, reports started coming in. She had gone north from her home in Ridgecrest and was seen near the North City station construction, Meridian Park, and 185th in Echo Lake.

Zoe is home. Photo by Ethan

She spent Saturday night outside, probably taking shelter on a porch.

On Sunday morning around 9:45am a jogger in North City Park (behind North City Elementary School in the vicinity of 10th NE and NE 195th) saw what appeared to be Zoe running into someone’s back yard.

The jogger had seen several notices about Zoe and sent the location to Ethan. At the time Ethan and his mom were searching Cromwell Park, about 15 blocks away, as there had been a report Zoe was there.

"When we got to the location where the jogger saw her, we saw her footprints going into the backyard of one of the homes. When I found her she was sitting underneath a covering. She looked really scared but really happy to see me."
Within 15 minutes she was back home in Ridgecrest with Ethan.
"She had a few nails that had broken down to the quick and were bleeding. She was hungry and tired but very happy to be safely home."
Ethan wants everyone to know how grateful he is to the community.
"I am truly thankful and grateful to anybody who spotted her and reported it, fed her, let her sleep on their porch etc. As well as anybody in the community who went out looking for her despite not even knowing her. I’m glad to live in such a caring and helpful community. I appreciate the help thank you!"

FOUND: Lost dog is wandering through north Shoreline

Saturday, January 1, 2022

Zoe is lost in north Shoreline
UPDATE: Zoe has been found and reunited with her owner.

Original story:

Her name is Zoe and she has been away from her home in Ridgecrest since Friday, December 31, 2021. She was home alone and the owners suspect the fireworks scared her.

She is an Australian cattle dog / blue heeler.

Posts on NextDoor and other social media sites have followed her progress from Ridgecrest to North City.

Then across the freeway at 185th to the Echo Lake neighborhood and there we lose the trail.

She was last identified at 2:45pm Saturday, January 1, 2022 and was thought to be headed west on 185th.

She is microchipped but not wearing a collar. She is extremely friendly and answers to her name. She is going up to houses, napping on protected porches, and accepting food. But then she moves on before her hosts can figure out what to do with her.

Zoe at 2:45pm on Saturday on 185th west of I-5

If you live in any of the north Shoreline neighborhoods - Echo Lake, Meridian Park, North City, maybe even Hillwood or Ballinger if she was brave enough to cross busy streets - please take a look outside in the protected areas outside your house.

The owners' number is (removed). Call anytime and they will come pick her up.

If you see her, contact Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com or post on NextDoor.

Photo: A basket of furry companionship

Sassy owns Cynthia Sheridan

It's no secret that the pandemic restrictions have been good for many pets. The shelters emptied as the number of people who were suddenly at home by themselves increased. Not wanting to be alone, they adopted furry companions.

Even without a pandemic, the Northwest has always boasted high numbers of pet adoptions. The Humane Society takes shelter animals from all over the country, particularly in times of crisis. Disaster areas empty out their shelters to make room for newly lost and displaced animals. Hurricanes in the Gulf, and wildfires in California see a lot of companion animals headed to Puget Sound.

Most recently, 100 shelter animals from Hawaii, which is dealing with a large COVID surge, arrived at the Bellevue headquarters of the Humane Society.

But Sassy has a home with Shoreline Area News reporter / photographer / poet Cynthia Sheridan.
