Irresponsible pet play time can lead to long-term environmental impacts

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

Many of us enjoy playing fetch with our four-legged best friend at the park. However, irresponsible pet play time can lead to long-term environmental impacts.

Just as it’s important to pick up pet waste to prevent poop from entering our lakes and streams, it’s important to properly retrieve and dispose of pet toys — especially plastic and rubber pet toys.

A concerned park visitor recently posted a video showing a significant amount of pollution in the Sammamish River, most of it being abandoned tennis balls and dog toys found downstream of the Marymoor off-leash dog park in Redmond.

The issue isn’t confined to the Sammamish River alone; it has been documented in several other states and water bodies as well.

Over time, the felt on tennis balls, comprised mostly of acrylic and nylon fibers, breaks down and releases microplastic fibers into the environment (Cross and Lindsey, 2007; Praminik et al., 2020).

The rubber ball and other plastic and rubber toys also break down into macro and microplastics over time, which can have a lasting legacy in sediments and negatively impact wildlife and aquatic organisms (Praminik et al., 2020).

The best practice for playing fetch on the water is to use environmentally safe toys, such as sticks or toys made with natural, biodegradable materials.

Shoreline couple taken in by classic puppy scam

Wednesday, September 2, 2020

A Shoreline couple called police on August 29, 2020 to report they were victims of fraud.

The couple told the deputy they contacted someone selling Yorkie puppies on Facebook. Two dogs were ordered and a $375 payment was sent through an online app.

The couple was shown a photo of a shipping slip and told the dogs would arrive on August 24th.

The dogs never arrived.

Instead, the victims were sent threatening and graphic texts about what would happen to them if they didn't pay the suspect an additional $500.

No further money was sent and the victims blocked the suspect’s phone number to prevent further communication. The event was reported to the payment app, who said the money was wired to someone in the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately the victims could not recover their money.

Shoreline Police warn citizens to be very cautious when making purchases like this online. Anyone can open a fake social media account and the person behind the keyboard may have questionable intentions.

Gabriel stays cool

Gabriel loves water!

On these hot days,
I direct the stream of water from a hose into the center of the yard,
and Gabriel runs through it!

Of course: he remembers his usual chore:
Remembering his job to
REMIND everybody to
FILL IN HER OR HIS BALLOT!

After that, we have two choices:

Return your Ballot via Drop Box
(open till 8 pm on the 4th of August, 2020)

Or

Return your Ballot via mail
( no postage needed,
it is recommended that you drop your Ballot into a mailbox
by Friday, the 31st of July, 2020)

Gabriel was ready to remind all of us
(as usual)
but he happened to be soaking wet!

Keep cool and stay well!

Warning: High bacteria counts at Hidden Lake - quit feeding water birds

Friday, June 5, 2020

By Diane Hettrick

Routine testing at Hidden Lake in west Shoreline has revealed high bacteria concentrations and the lake is closed.

The City recommends that people and pets do not come into contact with the water.

Definitely do not allow your dogs to drink lake water.

The source of the contamination is likely droppings from water birds.

Do not feed water birds (or pigeons or seagulls).

The artificial food source allows the population to increase to a level that is not sustainable. The birds become a nuisance as they move away from the water and start inhabiting and leaving their droppings in other places, such as school grounds.

In addition, bread is junk food for birds, filling them up with food which has little nutrition. In some circumstances bread can kill birds.

Some jurisdictions, like Mountlake Terrace, fine people who feed water birds.

Dog walking in the COVID-19 era

Thursday, May 14, 2020

The Shadow knows...
Two dog walkers heading in opposite directions meet on a narrow trail in Shoreline.

They each stop a respectable social distance from each other, they don’t know each other but are friendly.

They both want to continue in their respective directions, but because of the times they want to be safe and considerate of each other.

One calls to the other, “I’m okay if we just quickly pass, no petting or sniffing.”

And the other says, “okay, for the dogs too?”

They laugh and quickly pass without human or K-9 physical contact and continue on their way.

Time to laugh: Dog Haiku

Saturday, April 11, 2020

Photo by Daniel Sandoval on Unsplash

Dog Haiku
Author Unknown

I love my master;
Thus I perfume myself with
This long-rotten squirrel.

I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be

Today I sniffed
Many dog butts-I celebrate
By kissing your face.

I sound the alarm!
Paperboy-come to kill us all-
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I sound the alarm!
Mailman Fiend-come to kill us all-
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I sound the alarm!
Meter reader-come to kill us all-
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I sound the alarm!
Garbage man-come to kill us all-
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I sound the alarm!
Neighbor's cat-come to kill us all!
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!

I lift my leg and
Whiz on each bush. Hello, Spot -
Sniff this and weep

How do I love thee?
The ways are numberless as
My hairs on the rug.

My human is home!
I am so ecstatic I have
Made a puddle

I hate my choke chain -
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack
Ack Ack Ack Ack Ack!

Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot - no greater bliss - well,
Maybe catching cats

Look in my eyes and
Deny it. No human could
Love you as much I do

The cat is not all
Bad-she fills the litter box
With Tootsie Rolls

Dig under fence-why?
Because it's there. Because it's
There. Because it's there.

I am your best friend,
Now, always, and especially
When you are eating.

You may call them fleas,
But they are far more -I call
Them a vocation

My owners' mood is
Romantic-I lie near their
Feet. I fart a big one.

Curbside service for Otto

Friday, March 27, 2020

Story and photos by Cynthia Sheridan

Otto was feeling poorly but due to the COVID-19 epidemic, his owner was reluctant to sit in a waiting room.

After a phone call to Animal Medical Center in Shoreline, Otto received a curbside check where the decision was made for him to be admitted to the clinic.

Most local vets will come out to the car during the COVID-19 outbreak. Be sure to call first.

The sign says "Please Park Here for Appointment Drop-offs"  but Otto had a better idea.... a potty break.

We hope he will soon be feeling better.
