Bravepup Delivers Puppy Love
Bravepup brings adoptable rescue puppies to businesses and organizations for employee health and wellness. We provide a fun and innovative solution for corporate wellness programs to relieve stress, boost morale and contribute to a good cause. Donations from our Puppy Delivery Program help us rescue and transport puppies (and moms) from overcrowded, high-kill shelters in the South.

Rescue Program
Spaying/neutering is less common of a practice in the American South, leading to pet overpopulation and overcrowding at animal shelters. It’s not uncommon for a litter of puppies to be abandoned on the side of the road or euthanized due to shelter overcrowding and risk of disease transmission.
We rescue puppies from high-kill shelters in rural Georgia, provide proper veterinary care and treatment and transport them on Bravepup Freedom Flight to Seattle. Once in Seattle, our puppies live in volunteer foster homes and receive some much-needed love and socialization through our Puppy Delivery Program before finding forever homes.

Eastside dog park

Now let's see... who was it that was kveching that the Eastside Dog Park was nothing but a muddy field?

It certainly wasn't these guys, who clearly think that mud is a wonderful thing.

Hope they live close enough to walk home - makes me think of the preschool mom who kept old sheets in her car to throw over the seats before she let the carpool kids back in the car.

Walk for Old Dogs and Old Dog Pageant July 22 at Cromwell Park

Wednesday, July 4, 2018

Join us for the 7th Annual
Walk for Old Dogs
and
Old Dog Pageant
Sunday, July 22, 11:00am - 3:00pm

CROMWELL PARK SHORELINE
Shoreline 98133

Old dogs, young dogs, and people of all ages welcome!

At its heart, the Walk for Old Dogs and Old Dog Pageant is a celebration of all senior dogs.

Each step of the Walk for Old Dogs, a promenade around a 1/3-mile paved path in Shoreline’s Cromwell Park, signifies support for the hundreds of senior dogs now safe in Old Dog Haven’s care, and whose medical needs are being addressed.

Each dollar raised brings us closer to saving another senior dog that has been surrendered or abandoned in their advanced years.

The goal of this annual fundraising event, now in its seventh year, is to raise enough funds to cover one month of veterinary expenses for the 300+ dogs in our network of private foster homes in Western Washington.

The vast majority of dogs taken in by Old Dog Haven are in urgent need of quality veterinary care. Currently, that care averages Old Dog Haven $90,000 per month.

Registration is just $25 and includes free entry for contestants in the Old Dog Pageant and Dachshund Race for Rescue. Online pre-registration is strongly recommended for quicker check-in - which means more time to visit our sponsor and vendor booths, enjoy a tasty treat from our food vendors (for both pets and people) and mingle with our many two- and four-legged guests!

What began seven years ago as a way to raise money and provide an opportunity for people who love old dogs to spend time together has morphed into the largest gathering of old dogs ever held anywhere in the U.S. You have to see it to believe it! Please join us for a very special walk in the park.

Activities planned for the event include:

Dachshund Race for the Rescue (Free) Open to dachshunds of all ages. Three race categories: Pros: dachshunds that have placed in any race in prior years, Rookies: dachshunds that haven’t run a race to placement, and Alumni: any dachshund foster, Final Refuge or adoptee of Old Dog Haven. Sign up at the Walk by 11:45.

Old Dog Pageant (Free) Oldest Dog in Attendance, Best Costume, Best Trick, Best Begging Face)

Food trucks, including Seattle’s nationally recognized, The Seattle Barkery, (the food truck for dogs), will be there.

Pet-related vendors

Old Dog Haven T-shirts, sweatshirts and much more will also be available for purchase.

Prizes will be awarded for the three top fundraising teams, the three top individual fundraisers, newest Old Dog Haven foster family and Pageant winners.

Schedule of Events

  • 11:00am: Event Begins!
  • 12:15 - 12: 45pm: Dachshund Race for Rescue!
  • 12:45 - 1:00pm: Welcome - Remarks by emcee Ardeth De Vries
  • 1:00 - 2:00pm: Old Dog Pageant and Awards
  • 2:00pm: Recognition of the ODH Walk fundraising superstars
  • 2:15pm: The Walk for Old Dogs
  • 3:00pm: Thank you and tail wags until next year!

The outstanding success of the Walk for Old Dogs and Old Dog Pageant is due to the generosity of our event participants, sponsors, and vendors. Donations are tax-deductible.

Mystery at the Dog Park

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

By Diane Hettrick

Regular users of the Eastside Dog Park were startled to find a children's gym set up in the dog park. No explanation - it just appeared.

Dog owners were extremely concerned.

Was this supposed to be for the dogs? If so, it was dangerous.

Was the plan to share the dog park with children? Even more dangerous. There was an incident last year in the Edmonds Dog Park when a mother brought her dog and her toddlers to the dog park. The toddlers started running and the dogs started chasing them.

Fortunately, the dog owners were able to restrain the dogs, but everyone was shaken by the incident.

Someone called the Shoreline Parks department. They sent a staff person to check it out. Parks took it down and hauled it away immediately.

The mystery remains. Someone went to the trouble in disassembling the play structure from its original location, hauling it to the dog park, and reassembling it.

Was it a prank?

Did someone think they were doing a good deed, reusing an unwanted play structure by placing it in a barren looking park?

Don't know.

The park is back to normal. Dogs can safely run free. No children will be attracted to the dog park (and hopefully no mothers or fathers will bring them).

Tuesday, January 9, 2018

John Cox will judge at
Westminster on Feb 12
Shoreline resident John Cox is the judge for the 3rd Annual Masters Obedience Championship at Westminster on Monday, February 12, 2018, in conjunction with the 142nd Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City on February 12-13, 2018.

Cox will officiate over more than two dozen of the top Obedience dogs in the country during two rounds of daytime competition held at Piers 94.

Cox got his first Saint Bernard, Nicklus, in 1969. This puppy went on to become the breed’s most-titled (at the time) dog with American and Canadian Champion and American and Canadian Utility Dog titles. Cox has lived with eight other Saints and has earned additional championships and UDTs, plus owning a Pembroke Welsh Corgi which earned a tracking title.

In 1998, he started all over again with a Saint puppy, Kris, imported from Belgium. This dog surpassed all of his other Saint’s record as the most-titled Saint Bernard Champion with 39 titles to his name (9 Master titles in Agility, UDT, TD, RAE2, DD plus a VCD2.)

Cox’s last Saint Bernard, Ms. May, completed her Bronze Grand Championship along with a CDX, PCDX, GN and CGCA. All his dogs are owner-handled to all titles. He started judging AKC Obedience in 1978, making 2018 his 40th year of judging.

This is his first Westminster judging assignment.

All daytime preliminary breed and junior showmanship judging, agility and obedience competitions will be held at Piers 92 and 94 on the West Side of Manhattan. The group, Best in Show, and junior showmanship finals judging will be held at Madison Square Garden in the evening.

The dog show is preceded on Saturday, February 10, by the 5th Annual Masters Agility Championship at Westminster on Pier 94 as part of the “Meet and Compete” event which also includes AKC Meet The Breeds® on Piers 92 and 94.

FOUND: Missing dogs - scared by fireworks on New Year's Eve

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

Foxy and Sissy are missing

These little girls panicked with the fireworks on New Year's Eve and managed to get away from their owner and bolt down the street.

They live in the area of N 160th and Wallingford but could be as far as ten blocks away in any director. Panicked animals just run until they are exhausted. They are so disoriented they don't know where they are or how to get home.

Their owner is not on Facebook and doesn't do a lot of technology, so if you have the dogs, saw them, or know anything helpful, contact us at Tips@ShorelineAreaNews.com and we'll get the information to the owner.

Old Dog Haven’s 6th Annual Walk for Old Dogs a HUGE Success

Thursday, July 27, 2017

Well over 400 people and their dogs strutted their stuff at Old Dog Haven’s Walk for Old Dogs at Cromwell Park in Shoreline on July 23.

The Walk was a fundraiser hosted by Old Dog Haven and over $140,000 was raised by the event!

All of the money raised helps to pay veterinary expenses -- which average about $90,000 per month —for the over 300 senior dogs in Old Dog Haven’s care.

The top three fundraising teams and the top three individual fundraisers led the walk, flags held high as they balanced their prizes while holding leashes.

The top fundraising team — South Paws — raised $28,612 for the dogs and the top individual fundraiser — Peabody Johansen — raised $5,946.

Dogs of all ages, breeds, sizes and mobility enjoyed an afternoon in the park with the people who love them. They competed in contests, had free massages, nail trims, scarfed down goodies from the Seattle Barkery, socialized, met new friends, played in wading pools to keep cool and just loved being there.

Capt. Marvin piloted his way to a 1st Place
in the Costume category
Founders Judith and Lee Piper were recognized for fostering over 375 dogs during the past 13 years.

Foster parents are always needed. Go to the Old Dog Haven website for more information about fostering.

All dogs were eligible to enter contests in the Pageant, which produced winners in the categories of Best Costume, Best Trick, and Best Dancer. Prizes and ribbons were awarded to the top three winners in each category.

Gretchen Howell organized Dachshund Races to benefit Old Dog Haven.

Old Dog Haven is grateful to the community for supporting their efforts, including sponsors for the event, media contacts, people who donated prizes, volunteers, organizers, and everyone who helped make the day such a resounding success.
Paws up to all of you!

Fourth of July: not a pet's favorite holiday

Scared of fireworks
Fireworks are beautiful to look at, but they can be scary for our pets. The bangs and booms are hard on their sensitive hearing, and even the calmest pet can get upset by the unfamiliar loud noises.

To help your pet cope with the noise from fireworks, and reduce the chance that it runs away, Regional Animal Services of King County offers these tips:

  1. Keep your pet secured indoors in the quietest room of your home while fireworks are going off. You can also use soothing music or television as a distraction. Some pets will stay calmer when placed in a secure crate in a darkened, quiet room.
  2. If your pet is normally kept outside, bring them inside or put them in a well-ventilated garage or shed or in a basement during fireworks displays.
  3. Make sure your pet is licensed and has an ID tag or microchip. Pets with ID have a much greater chance of being returned to their owners.
  4. Don't assume that your pet won't react just because you haven't had problems in the past. Sometimes, pets become sensitive to loud noises later in life.

If your pet is lost, check in person at PAWS and check back often. It may take some time before spooked pets are brought to shelters.

PAWS shelters strays from Brier, Edmonds, Kenmore, Lake Forest Park, Mill Creek, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Shoreline and Woodinville.
If your pet is not at PAWS, please keep coming back. Your pet may arrive the next day or the next week, and since many animals look alike we cannot guarantee we will be able to match a completed lost report with your pet. Your chances of finding your pet increase if you return to the shelter on a regular basis.

Here's PAWS information for missing pets
Here's PAWS information for when you find a pet

FOUND: Washington's Most Wanted: Roo the dog

Tuesday, June 20, 2017

Ryan and Roo back together
UPDATE: Tuesday 8:45pm  Roo has been found! His owner is at the vet now with him.

He says he got a call from two men who had seen the posters he put up in the neighborhood on 179th and spotted Roo hiding in the bushes.

He does have some injuries. More info to come.

Original story

Tuesday 12:44pm
David Rose, Q13 Host / Executive Producer of Washington's Most Wanted, has taken up the case of a missing Shoreline dog.

Of course it's a little more than that.

Shoreline Police say burglars broke into Roo's Shoreline home Saturday on 16th Ave NE and stole a handgun, social security card, and about $100 in cash.

When the owners returned, they also found their dog 'Roo' was missing. The burglars left the back door and gate open so it is unknown if they stole 'Roo' or if he is lost somewhere in the Shoreline area.

He has all of his tags with his name and his owner's phone number. If you spot him, please call 911 or his owner, Ryan, at 425-773-7349.

Ryan says they were two possible sightings Saturday evening on 15th Ave and 179th. 'Roo' was very frightened so it's best not to approach him.

Call and follow his movements if possible until help arrives.

If you have any information about the burglars, who are described only as a male and female, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or use the P3 Tips App on your phone.

There is a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

And Ryan would love to have his dog back home.

Notice to Dog Owners of Lake Forest Park and Frequent Animal Acres Park Users

Thursday, March 30, 2017

The City of Lake Forest Park was notified Wednesday, March 29, 2017, of a stray dog that was picked up at Pfingst Animal Acres park, 17435 Brookside Blvd NE, Lake Forest Park, and taken to PAWS, where it tested positive for the Parvo virus.

This is extremely contagious and can be transmitted when in contact with an infected dog’s feces. To view more about Parvo and symptoms please visit WebMD

From WebMD: Highly resistant, the virus can live in the environment for months, and may survive on inanimate objects such as food bowls, shoes, clothes, carpet and floors.

This is a good time to make sure your dogs are up-to-date on their vaccinations, and always, pick up after them!

Photos: Dogs Don't Mind - A slushy day at the Dog Park

Gabriel with a face full of slush

By GM Wiegand

I took Gabriel to the Eastside Off Leash Dog Park in the rain and slushy snow a couple of weeks ago.

Dog-caused puddles at the Eastside Dog Park

The big foot-bath in the box gate was possibly one of the reasons for the absolutely deserted state of the park.

Let me hasten to add that the reason for the big puddles are all the Dogs, who, once they get into the park, are so excited about being in the park, that, as soon as the handler takes off the leash, they “peel outta there”, spraying gravel (and causing the hollows that fill up with rain and cause the big, deep puddles!)

I recommend boots for the humans.

The Dogs don’t seem to mind the puddles!

Community project to clean up the Eastside Off Leash Dog Area

Friday, January 13, 2017

Drainage at the dog park has been an issue for a long time.
The park had to be closed for a while in 2015 while the City
used pea gravel and sand to deal with the flooding.

Taryn Maxwell was looking for a community project - and her dog gave it to her.

I was looking for things I could do to improve my community in my spare time and when my soaking wet dog jumped in my lap at the dog park, it hit me.
We need to fix up this park.

"We're going to work on the puddle problem, add more gravel, and give the dogs more to do."

It's a great area for the dogs to run - Gabriel is having fun in the rain
but Taryn wants to provide a playground for dogs.

"Our goal is to buy gravel, sand, play equipment, and installation materials to get the job done. After we have the supplies, we'll hold a work party."

**This project has been approved by the city**

"Do what you can, donate, share, show up for the work party!"

"We love our dogs and think they deserve the best. So come on Shoreline, let's get to work!"

The park is located at 1902 NE 150th St, Shoreline 98155 on the Fircrest campus on 15th NE.

Taryn has set up a GoFundMe page with a funding goal of $6,000.
