If you lost your pet during the fireworks...

Saturday, July 5, 2014

If your pet is lost, check in person at all local shelters, and check back often. It may take some time before spooked pets are brought to shelters.

PAWS in Lynnwood provides shelter services for both Lake Forest Park and Shoreline, so if your pet was found in these cities, check withe PAWS.

Here is the "Lost a Pet?" information from their webpage:
  • Begin your search as soon as you realize your pet is missing, and visit the Missing Pet Partnership for specific strategies on how to find lost cats and lost dogs.
  • Visit PAWS. 15305 44th Ave W, Lynnwood, WA 98087, Tel 425-787-2500, Fax 425-742-5711.
  • Check out the following pet list to see if your lost pet has already arrived at PAWS. If they are at the shelter, be prepared for the reclaiming process when you arrive at the shelter.
  • If your pet has a microchip, contact the microchip company to make sure your pet’s registration is up-to-date with current phone numbers and contact information. Some microchip companies take lost reports over the phone. If you are not sure of the microchip brand, contact the veterinary clinic or shelter where your pet was microchipped, or visit petmicrochip.org.
Next steps from PAWS:
  • For lost cats, consider renting a humane trap as many displaced cats have not gone far from their homes. Fewer than 7% of cats who come into the shelter are reunited with their families, but more than 50% of lost cats are found by their own families when they use humane traps and other methods described on the Missing Pet Partnership website.
  • Submit a “lost report” on animal related or social websites like Craig’s List.

So, email for more details.

"Get digital" with King County pet licenses in trial program

Thursday, May 29, 2014

Pilot program with PetHub provides tags that can be scanned with mobile devices

For a limited time, Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) is offering a new type of pet license tag in partnership with PetHub. The license is printed with a QR (Quick Response) code that can be scanned with a smartphone or other mobile device to retrieve the animal's online profile. This can help stray pets and their owners get reunited much sooner.

"A license is an inexpensive way to provide peace of mind if your pet ever gets lost, and a digital pet license provides an additional level of protection," said RASKC Manager Dr. Gene Mueller. "Ninety-six percent of animals returned through PetHub are home in less than a day, before they even enter a shelter."

Tom Arnold, Founder of PetHub.com, said, "Our goal is to get a lost dog or cat home before it can become injured through fights with other animals, taken in by strangers thinking the pet is homeless, or enter a shelter."

Digital pet licenses are the same price as the standard RASKC license: $30 a year for spayed or neutered cats and dogs, or $60 a year for unaltered pets. Digital licenses are only available for purchase online or by calling 206-296-2712.

500 PetHub digital license tags have been set aside for this trial program, and the offer will end when supplies run out. Only cats and dogs living in the RASKC service area (including Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore) are eligible for this special offer. At the end of this trial program, RASKC and PetHub will evaluate the response from pet owners to see if digital license tags will become a permanent offering in King County.

PetHub's system links the physical ID tag to an animal's online profile that can be safely accessed by anyone with a mobile device, whether a smartphone or standard cellular phone. That profile can be updated free of charge at PetHub to allow the owner to list emergency contact information, including that of anyone who helps care for the animal, such as spouses, pet sitters, veterinarians, and other family and friends. Optional upgrades include "found pet" alerts, GPS notifications, and a way to broadcast a missing pet's profile to local shelters and businesses.

For more information on digital pet licenses and eligible areas in King County, visit PetHub. For more information about Regional Animal Services, log on to King County pets

One lucky dog

Marc Weinberg reports

My friends Peter and Tamara have the most wonderful dog, Bella. She hasn't been feeling well for the past few days so they took her to the Vet where she was diagnosed with an infection and running a fever.

She was sent home with a supply of antibiotics and her loving owners didn't want to burden her with having to walk from the car to the house so Peter carried her in.

Sunset Park: the rules have changed - no more off-leash dogs

Sunday, March 31, 2013

From The Friends of Sunset School Park

Maintenance and operation shift from Shoreline Schools to City of Shoreline

Times are a'changing. As you may know, with the demolition of the Sunset School building and the signing of the Joint Use Agreement between the School District and the City in January, maintenance and operational responsibilities shifted from the District to the City. This means that the rules that apply to Shoreline parks will now apply to Sunset, including the City’s leash law. The city is currently in the process of creating and installing park entry and rule signs. You may see some new rule signs as early as next week. Please be aware that you could be ticketed ($25 for the first violation and $50 for each additional violation within a year) for letting your dog off-leash at Sunset. If you have any park maintenance or operational questions, contact Kirk Peterson, the City’s Park Maintenance Superintendent 206-801-2611.

Shoreline's off-leash dog parks
We do have an off leash dog area in our neighborhood at Shoreview Park, 320 Innis Arden Way through the Shoreline Community College West Entrance. In the winter from November 1 - March 15, Saltwater Park’s south beach is also an off-leash area. With these two parks established on the west side since 2009, the City has worked hard to provide another off-leash dog area in the east side of town. On Monday, March 18, the City Council just approved a new east side site at the Fircrest Campus located at 1760 NE 150th Street. It should open this summer. For more information about off-leash dog areas, contact Maureen Colaizzi, the City’s Parks Project Coordinator, 206-801-2603.

If you are interested in getting involved and becoming an advocate for off leash areas, check out ShoreDog.

Off-leash Area meeting set for Saturday

Monday, January 7, 2013

The annual meeting of ShoreDog will be 10 am, Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Richmond Beach Library, 19601 21st Ave N.W.

Items up for discussion include a potential third park site, election of officers and a recap of the 2012.

ShoreDog is a non-profit, volunteer, stewardship group for the city’s two dog off-leash parks. It is dedicated to establishing and supporting neighborhood dog off-leash areas with the City of Shoreline where well behaved canine citizens can exercise, play and socialize with other dogs and their people in a clean, safe environment.

There are currently two off-leash areas in Shoreline: Shoreview Off-Leash Park, which is a traditional fenced park by Shoreline Community College; and a winter seasonal area at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park that is unfenced and open from Nov. 1 through March 15.

Third time's the charm? Eastside dog park meeting

Sunday, December 30, 2012

Join the Off-Leash Dog Area Study Group at a public open house meeting on Jan 24 from 6-7pm at the Shoreline City Hall Council Chambers, 17500 Midvale Ave N, to learn more about the East Side Off-Leash Dog Area recommendation.

It has been a year in the making: a 2-acre area at the southeastern corner of the Fircrest property located just east of 15th on 150th Street will be recommended to the PRCS Board and City Council as the new East-Side Off-Leash Area.

This is your opportunity to learn about how this site was selected, reviewed and approved by the State of Washington DSHS for consideration as an Off-Leash Dog Area.

For more information, see the East Side Off-Leash Dog Area project page or contact Maureen Colaizzi, Parks Project Coordinator.

The original recommendation for a Shoreline dog park was an area inside Hamlin Park. That site was abandoned because of neighborhood protests. Secondary locations on the west side were developed successfully. A second eastside location also failed because of neighborhood concerns. The currently proposed location is sandwiched between the state-owned buildings at Fircrest and Hamlin Park.

Maintenance of the dog parks is assisted by a citizens' group called ShoreDog which works closely with the Parks department and Parks Board. ShoreDog will be having a public meeting on Saturday, January 12 at the Shoreline Library, 345 NE 175th, 11am - noon. Email for more information or to volunteer.

Therapy dogs in Shoreline Schools

Friday, November 23, 2012

Twelve years ago, former Shorewood High School teacher Sally Tonkin wrote a grant to the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation which created a program in cooperation with special education for students with emotional behavioral disabilities, taught by Maureen Setterberg.

As a result of the grant, they were able to hire professional therapy dog trainer Laurie Hardman to work with Setterberg’s students in training Wilbur, Tonkin's yellow lab.

“We trained Wilbur to be a therapy dog and many of my students have been officially trained since that time to be officially trained as therapy dog handlers,” Setterberg said. “Laurie Hardman has volunteered twice a week for the past 11 years to work with my students and dogs.”

The program has expanded in recent years to include partnerships with Parkwood and Syre elementary special education programs.

Setterberg’s students trained a second dog last year, Bella. Bella, a black lab, belongs to William Sugden, a counselor at Shorewood.

As part of the Shorewood students' training, they visit classrooms and design activities to do with the elementary students, beginning to develop the idea of community service and developing compassion for others.

“The therapeutic value for everyone involved has been amazing,” Setterberg said. “Many of my students experience stress on a regular basis. Working with the dogs has helped them manage their stress appropriately. Communication skills and social development have been major areas of progress as well.”

Setterberg, Hardman and the students visit Faye Rasmussen’s special education classroom at Parkwood monthly with their trained therapy dogs.

“My students show great enthusiasm for the visits, asking many times when the therapy dogs will be coming,” Rasmussen said. “The benefits for my students have been increased self-esteem, reduced anxiety, increased willingness to interact and an increased motivation to complete schoolwork. It is an amazing program that changes lives.”

Humane Society waives fees for older cats and dogs

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Seattle Humane waives fees for older cats and dogs this month

Are you ready for a mature relationship? Adopt a senior pet at Seattle Humane Society and find out for yourself why senior pets are the best! All month long, adoption fees are waived on cats 7 years and older (normally $25), and dogs 7 years and older are $50 (normally $199-275, training not included).

At some shelters, dogs and cats over the age of three are not considered “adoptable,” but at the Seattle Humane Society, we know that older pets make amazing companions. Just ask Kaarin, who recently adopted Nicolette, an 11-year-old Australian Shepherd mix. Kaarin is a widow whose dog had passed away. When she saw Nicolette at seattlehumane.org, her heart went out to this senior pup who found herself homeless in her golden years. She decided to adopt Nicolette and give her a loving home. In less than 24 hours, Kaarin wrote to Seattle Humane to say that Nicolette was enjoying naps stretched across her feet, happy to be part of a family.

Top 5 Reasons to Adopt a Mature Pet:

MELLOW PERSONALITY
You know exactly who you are adopting because his or her personality is formed Plus, these great dogs and cats tend to have just the right level of playfulness for busy families.

ALREADY HOUSE-TRAINED
Most mature pets have already learned many of life’s lessons –including potty lessons!

MAKE THEMSELVES AT HOME
Older companion animals seem to acclimate more quickly to new settings.

HAVE A LOT OF LOVE TO GIVE
Many of our adopters say that senior dogs and cats really seem to appreciate it when they are adopted and bond to their new family more readily than younger ones.

YOU CAN TEACH AN OLD DOG (OR CAT) NEW TRICKS!
With older pets, you don’t have to spend time teaching them all the basics – they already know them! Instead, have fun teaching them new tricks!

Visit the Seattle Humane Society at 13212 SE Eastgate Way in Bellevue to meet your perfect pet today or see our adoptable pets online

Seattle Humane Society has been awarded the coveted 4-star rating by Charity Navigator, America's largest independent charity evaluator for the fourth consecutive year! Founded in 1897 to bring people and pets together, Seattle Humane Society provides incredible companion animals for adoption 7 days a week, pet workshops and training, a pet food bank, a low-fee spay/neuter surgery program, humane teen club, a visiting pets program and more.

PAWS takes in refugee dogs from Iran

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

The Iranian government is proposing a complete ban on all dogs in the cities and suburbs. The dramatic new law has the country’s shelters struggling to find these animals new homes abroad.

PAWS companion Animal Shelter in Lynnwood has now taken in two of these endangered animals, and could take even more in the near future.

“Our commitment will always be to serving our local communities, but the strength of our donors and an amazing volunteer corps allows us to lend a hand during this crisis,” says Companion Animal Services Director Kay Joubert.

After flying 19 hours in a cargo hold from Tehran to Seattle, a Border Collie mix named Shabnam (Farasi for “morning dew”) became the first PAWS rescue.

Although frightened and visibly shaken upon arrival, Shabnam is now getting more comfortable with the other dogs in the shelter.

“She actually has a couple of doggie friends she plays with,” says PAWS Shelter Manager Lisa Hockins. “She’s even starting to warm up to the volunteers.”

Shabnem takes a dip before leaving Tehran last week.

A second dog arrived at PAWS on Tuesday night, this one a female dog named “Ghandoon”. So far she is doing well, but shelter staff says it will be another week before she’s ready to meet potential adopters.

But according to Joubert, Shabnem is ready to start tugging heartstrings today.

“We’re going to start showing her this afternoon. Those that are interested can fill out an application, and then we can schedule visits. She’s a little sweetheart in good health, so I don’t expect her to be here long.

Good Dogs at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Diane with Polly on her leash
By Constance Perenyi

The issue of dogs at farmers markets is a hot topic these days. To welcome canine companions, or to ban them? This is the question many sponsors weigh as markets become more popular, and increasingly crowded. While may still allow dogs, The Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance has never allowed them, and the Edmonds Market has just decided that fido is no longer part of the mix.

Recognizing how important it is for humans to take full responsibility for their animal companions, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is taking another approach this season. We have always welcomed dogs, but we are beginning the process of banning flexi-leads, those expandable leashes that allow dogs to explore, and in crowded places like farmers market, to wrap around shoppers legs, get too close to other dogs, and create all kinds of unintentional havoc.

Our policy insists that people keep their dogs on short leashes while they shop at the market, and  that they pay close attention to what is happening at the end of those leads.

To make this fun for everyone, we are now selling leashes made especially for the market. 4 feet in length, sturdy enough to hold a Great Dane, but long enough to walk a Chihuahua, each is inscribed with the message “I am a good dog at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market.” They cost only $7, and come with a treat for the good dogs whose thoughtful humans purchase them.

To promote good citizenship on both ends of the leash, we are sponsoring a special photo contest this season. People who take pictures of their best dog friend wearing a stylish new leash from the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market can enter to win a doggie gift basket from Mud Bay. There are two categories, and we encourage people to enter either or both with: one picture of their stylish dog wearing a market leash at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, and/or one picture of their canine model sporting a market leash out in the world.

Interested humans, and their dogs, can stop by the Friends Information Table to buy a leash, and get more information. Then, participants can take some great pictures, and send the best with their name, dog’s name, address, and phone to this email address .

Photo contest winners will be announced on October 21 on the last day of our regular season. The Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is open on Sundays from 11 am to 4 pm. And yes, good dogs on short leashes are welcome.

The Farmers Market is on the lower level of Lake Forest Park Towne Centre, 17171 Bothell Way NE at Ballinger Way, Lake Forest Park 98155.
