Mountlake Terrace to begin ticketing off-leash dogs in city parks

Saturday, July 2, 2016

According to an article in My Edmonds News, dog owners, including some from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park, have been using Ballinger Park in Mountlake Terrace as an off-leash dog park.

The problem is, that while the former golf course is temptingly large and open, it is still a city park. Off-leash dogs are not allowed in MLT city parks and the fine for violating the law is $200.

  • Mountlake Terrace has an Off-Leash Park at 5303 228th St. SW.
  • Edmonds also has an off-leash area at the waterfront, next to Marina Beach.
  • Shoreline has two year-round dog areas - at Shoreview Park and Fircrest - as well as a seasonal winter park on the beach south of Saltwater Park. (Shoreline OLDA)

Mountlake Terrace dog owners have expressed a desire for an off-leash dog area in Ballinger Park, but so far, city officials have not been supportive of that idea.

Eastside Dog Park ready for business

Wednesday, March 18, 2015

The remaining pile is for a future work party

By GM Wiegand

The work is mostly done at the Eastside off Leash Park and the park has been open for business all this week. The park was closed during the day for the week of March 9, while the City of Shoreline placed pea sized rounded gravel in the lowest areas of the park to resolve wet area issues.

Now all the big puddles are gone. A small pile of pea-gravel sits to the south of the pedestrian gate for a future volunteer work party to improve the entrance area box-gate.

Dry footing!

Happy, dry-footed dogs and owners relish the chance to play off-leash. The dogs socialize, as do the owners.

Come and visit, bring your Dog!

Maintenance to close Eastside Off-Leash area starting March 9

Friday, March 6, 2015

Eastside Dog Park

The Eastside Off-Leash Area will temporarily close beginning the week of March 9, 2015 during the hours of 8:00 am and- 5:00 pm to improve surfacing and drainage.

The City of Shoreline will place pea sized rounded gravel in the lowest areas of the park to resolve wet area issues. Closure is required to protect dogs and their owners from heavy equipment. The Off-Leash Area will be open between 5:00 p.m. and dusk during construction.

The pea gravel for this project is being reused from the playground upgrade project at Northcrest Park. Instead of hauling this material to the landfill, the City has chosen to recycle it as drainage and surfacing material at the Eastside Off-Leash Dog Area. A small pile will be created to the south of the pedestrian gate for a future volunteer work party to improve the entrance area.

We apologize for the inconvenience. We will post construction updates and future work parties requiring park closure on the Off-Leash-Area website.

Shoreline to dedicate new Eastside Off-Leash Dog Area

Friday, July 5, 2013

The new Eastside Off-Leash Dog Area is open for use. To celebrate, you are invited to a grand opening and dedication ceremony on Saturday, July 13th from 10:00 to 11:00am.

“Shoreline’s quality of life is enriched by the wealth of recreation opportunities our beautiful and abundant parks offer - ball fields, a skate park, tennis courts and playgrounds to name a few,” says PRCS Director Dick Deal. “Adding places for dogs to play without leashes builds on that by offering another way for the community to enjoy its parks.”

The new off-leash dog area is located at 1760 NE 150th Street in the southeast corner of the Fircrest campus. Enter the site from NE 150th Street just east of the entrance to the Public Health Lab at 20th Avenue NE.

For more information visit the city website or contact Parks Planner Maureen Colaizzi 206-801-2603.

Dog Fest a fete

Thursday, September 1, 2011

By Mina Williams

Put close to 300 people with their dogs at the Shoreview Off-leash Dog Park and there is bound to be a crazy fun day.

That’s what happened August 13, 2011 when ShoreDog’s 3rd annual outdoor dog event came to Shoreline.

From displays to demonstrations plus mixing and mingling with neighbors and other dog owners while snacking on hot dogs, there was something for everyone.

Throughout the day people and their pooches had a selection of attractions and activities. There were “pie” eating contests hosted by Dining Dog Café.

The fur flew during the “Best Shedder” contest sponsored by Furizzy Dog Grooming Rakes.

Some lucky dogs got to strut the dog-walk modeling fashions from D’Marie Pet Boutique.

Competition was “fierce” during the four heats of Doggie Dash racing and the “Best of” contests for eyes, tricks and pet-owner look-a-like events.

The Seattle Flydogs offered training expositions showing how natural canine behaviors can morph into extra ordinary tricks.

Meanwhile a myriad of pet food specialists, dedicated doggie treat bakers, health providers and party providers plus day care, walking and vacation experts offered advice and information to DogFest attendees.

The event is created in the late summer by Shoreline’s Dog Off-leash Group, ShoreDog, in cooperation with Shoreline Parks and Recreation department.

ShoreDog is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer stewardship group that is dedicated to establishing and supporting neighborhood dog off-leash areas within the City of Shoreline where well behaved canine citizens can exercise, play and socialize with other dogs and their people in a clean, safe environment.

To stay tuned in on upcoming off-leash area events visit the ShoreDog website.

ShoreDog forms east Shoreline off-leash committee

Monday, August 1, 2011

Shoreline dogs romp in off-leash park.  Photo by Kate Pineo.

ShoreDog, the organization which successfully worked with the City of Shoreline to create two off-leash areas for dogs in Shoreline at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park and Shoreview by SCC, has formed a committee to locate a third site in east Shoreline.

The original committee's first choice was Hamlin Park in east Shoreline, but there was such an outcry from neighbors that plans were abandoned in favor of the west side locations.

Leaders in the group say that they now have the experience of successfully creating and maintaining areas, which will help them with the new site search.

They say that "From past experience, this will be a longer-term project and will include activities such as: site evaluation, working with City Staff and Parks Board members, and making presentations to neighborhood associations and to the Parks Board."

They are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who can commit to this project.
"Please send us an email telling us a little bit about yourself and how you could contribute to this effort."

Shoreline Dog Parks made permanent, ShoreDog plans DogFest

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

ShoreDog, the Shoreline Off-Leash dog group, is planning its second annual DogFest, celebrating the two dog parks in Shoreline which were made permanent by the Shoreline City Council after a trial period. The Shoreview and Richmond Beach Off-Leash parks will be maintained by the ShoreDog group, which has long advocated for off-leash areas in the city.

Dogs need to be on-leash in the rest of the city parks. Warning tickets are being given now during what is considered an education period, with actual tickets and fines planned for later in the year.

The Richmond Beach area is at the far south end of the waterfront at Saltwater Park. The Shoreview area is adjacent to the parking lot at Shoreline Community College. For more information, see the ShoreDog website.
DogFest will be hosted by ShoreDog at the Shoreview Off-Leash Park on Saturday, September 18 from 11am to 3 pm.
