Destinations: Tulip Valley Farms debuts new field, garden, and unique experiences in Skagit Valley

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

Tulip Valley Farms debuts this spring, offering visitors two new fields and a myriad of ways to experience the region’s tulip bloom.

Located in the heart of Skagit Valley, Tulip Valley Farms is a collective of new farms and gardens, including an expansive 30-acre farm with views of Mount Baker and beautiful surrounding farmland.

It features 12 acres of tulips among hazelnut trees and between grass rows for a spacious park-like feel.

Tulip Valley Farms is also introducing Tulip Valley Gardens, a 9-acre farm with 2 acres of tulips right off of I-5 designed to provide a “taste” of the tulips, intimate events, and programs, minus the traffic.

Tulip Valley Farm and Tulip Valley Gardens will open April 1, 2023 bloom-pending, for the entire month giving locals and visitors many ways to enjoy the magic of mother nature and our rural, agricultural communities.

Tickets are on sale now at www.tulipvalley.com

“I wanted to create a space where individuality and community come together to create a living masterpiece of tulip bloom and creative abundance,” said Andrew Miller, CEO of Tulip Valley Farms.
“We developed new and innovative ways to attract more people to the region to celebrate this time of year with us, supporting our community of businesses and growers, and making it accessible to people who wouldn’t come because of traffic, perceived fit, or having enough reasons to make the trip. I had a vision for a ‘Magic Springdom,’ and that’s what we created.”

Destinations: Wine Walk Row in Woodinville

Monday, February 27, 2023

Story and photos by Mike Remarcke

The Schoolhouse District in Woodinville has created a new and unique wine and beverage tasting experience called Wine Walk Row.

The area has the look and feel of an alley, with garage doors that open to a wide variety of wine tasting opportunities, as well as a future collection of distilleries, craft beers and local foods.

Several regional wineries have tasting rooms that accommodate both indoor and outdoor seating areas and also provide local foods and pleasant surroundings so tasters can linger and enjoy the environment.

Recently, Willamette Valley-based Montinore Estate and Landlines Estates opened a new tasting establishment on Wine Walk Row. The Oregon company is very excited about introducing their organic and Biodynamic grapes in their four Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines to the Washington market.

The tasting room opening included remarks from Founder Rudy Marchesi and Winemaker Stephen Weber. Stephen started his winemaking career in Washington, moving on to Australia, Europe and back to the Great Northwest. He is excited about being back in Washington to introduce his fine line of wines.

Other wine tasting rooms on the Row include Valdemar, Barnard Griffin and L’Ecole N° 41 as well McQueen Champagne Bar, Ballard Pizza and Café Dupar, with more to come.

Wine Walk Row, 17401 133rd Ave NE Woodinville, WA 98072

Destinations: The return of CHOMP! - a major food festival in Redmond - Saturday, August 20, 2022

Sunday, August 14, 2022

Contrary to popular opinion, CHOMP! is not this summer’s latest sequel to Jaws, Jurassic Park or even Little Shop of Horrors.

It is, in fact, a free, family-friendly, day-long event which focuses on sustainability, healthy food and social justice.

Even with these strong underpinnings, CHOMP! is a fun new kind of county fair highlighting local food production, green living, and recycling mixed with live music, food trucks and kids’ activities.

Now in its eighth year, CHOMP! celebrates all that is fresh, delicious, local, and sustainable in King County.

Taking place at Redmond’s Marymoor Park, 6046 W. Lake Sammamish Pkwy Redmond, WA 98052, the event supports King County Executive Dow Constantine’s Local Food Initiative.

The event highlights chefs and restaurants using locally sourced food; local organizations specializing in healthy and affordable foods; local farms and farmland support.

Over the past seven years CHOMP! has grown to an audience of more than 6,000 attendees and features a full day of free activities for the whole family.

Kiddos in the audience will have their own musical groups, live animals, zucchini races, wilderness awareness school, sustainable toys and clothing, and a scavenger hunt.
Adults can enjoy CHOMP’s farmers market, upscale bazaar, tree climbing, booths for sustainability organizations, ethnic food vendors and live concerts.

King County Master Gardeners will host their traditional Ask-A-Master-Gardener Booth where they’ll also feature hands-on gardening experiences for kids.

Gardening enthusiasts and newspaper readers will have opportunities to speak with local gardening columnist, Bruce Bennett – The Garden Guy.

This year’s Festival will be held Saturday, August 20, 10:00am to 6:00pm, at Marymoor Park in Redmond

For more information about CHOMP!, visit the group’s website at www.chomplocal.org

Destinations: The Museum of Flight's new exhibit - The Walt Disney Studios and World War II

Sunday, July 10, 2022

A new insignia was designed exclusively for The Museum of Flight’s display of the exhibition by Mike Gabriel and The Museum of Flight. It features Donald Duck dressed as a pilot holding onto the wings of a B-17 while soaring over the Pacific Northwest. B-17 Flying Fortresses were built at The Boeing Company plant in Seattle, Washington.

The Museum of Flight on East Marginal Way S has opened a new exhibit in conjunction with Disney Studios: The Walt Disney Studios and World War II

During this unique period in animation history, The Walt Disney Studios functioned as a morale-builder for both the civilian public and deployed Allied troops.

Walt knew that cartoons would provide a direct yet amusing way to communicate with the American people about war-related issues and anxieties.

Disney characters appeared in short films and military insignia, advertisements, magazines and stamp books. Government posters promoting tax payment, food recycling, rationing, war bond sales and farm production also used Disney cartoon personalities.

The exhibition includes 550 examples of these rare historical objects and film clips.

Matt Hayes, CEO + President of The Museum of Flight

When America entered WWII The Walt Disney Studios immediately supported and promoted the war effort. The Studios and the U.S. government had a history of collaboration and cooperation starting in 1939, when Walt and his artists began designing squadron and unit insignia.

It was not surprising then that in 1941, after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Walt Disney and his staff pledged to fully support the war effort without hesitation or the potential for profit.

Mickey Mouse and the other Disney cartoon characters were already beloved, and the irascible Donald Duck was a special favorite among the troops.

No matter how serious the subject, the “Disney touch” helped calm anxieties while powerfully cutting to the essence of the Allied experience.

When asked why The Museum of Flight is hosting this exhibition and why now, I was struck by the parallels that are cautionary, instructive, and inspiring. So many themes inherent in the material mirror so much of what we are experiencing today, as a museum and as a society-adapting to a new way of life, juggling priorities amid challenging circumstances, learning new skills-conversations that are being led by the experiences of women and other minorities.

DHC-3T Otter coming in from the north for a landing

Story and photos by Wayne Pridemore

Kenmore Air has flown over Lake Forest Park and Shoreline for over seventy-five years. The company's aircraft fleet is such a familiar sight that most residents pay little or no attention to them.

Today Kenmore Air is considered one of the premiere floatplane operators in the world. The company has a fleet of twenty seven seaplanes and land aircraft to take you on a scenic adventure.

Floatplane maintenance hangar at Kenmore

Kenmore Air corporate headquarters is located just north of Lake Forest Park at Kenmore, Washington on the north end of Lake Washington.

Engine maintenance

The airline has hubs for seaplanes at a terminal on Seattle's Lake Union and for land planes at Boeing Field-King County International Airport. From these bases the company operates scheduled and charter seaplane and landplane service throughout western Washington and southwestern British Columbia.

Kenmore Air's Chris Blair at the controls of the Otter

The company started operations on March 21,1946 by three high school friends, Bob Munro, Reg Collins, and Jack Mines. The young men had one airplane and a single hanger near swampy land in Kenmore. The company originally made money by flying supplies to sometimes dangerous locations in the state.

Ballard Bridge from a Seattle scenic flight

Soon Kenmore Air added three more aircraft and late in 1946 Bob Munro became sole owner. Late in the 1940s Kenmore Air became a Republic Seabee dealer for the Northwest and the company's future success was almost assured.

Taxiing to the dock at the end of a beautiful flight

Kenmore will fly you there for an adventure never to be forgotten. A twenty minute scenic tour over Seattle. How about a ninety minute flight over Mount Rainier and then on to Mount Saint Helens. There are daily scheduled flights between Seattle and eight San Juan Islands destinations. You might want to fly from downtown Seattle to Victoria and return by boat.

Destinations: WildLanterns at the Woodland Park Zoo

Saturday, January 2, 2021

All photos by Steve Schneider

What do you want first - the good news or the bad news?

Ok. Good news. The light show at the Woodland Park Zoo is nothing short of spectacular. They completely scrapped the old light show and created an extensive and elaborate new show which they call WildLanterns.

We published photos previously (see article) from Lee Lageschulte.

Steve Schneider sent 18 photos and only one was a duplicate of Lee's. (They both liked the swans). Lots to look at in the show.

More Good news. The show continues through January 17, 2021.

Now the Bad news. The website says that the show is almost sold out.
"Currently WildLanterns ticket availability is very limited or sold out."

Here's the webpage with the ticket info. Don't wait.
