Destinations: Still time to see the tulips

Sunday, April 29, 2018

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

The tulips in the Skagit Valley are still in bloom and well worth the trip to view and photograph the fields. The best time to go is during week days to avoid the weekend crowds.

The RoozenGaarde display garden is one of the wonders of our state and draws visitors from around the United States and the world. Planted there are 90 plus varieties of tulips and 150 flower bulb varieties.

The display garden is open from 9am until 7pm and admission is $7 per person. Sorry, but no pets are allowed.

Parking is free with an admission ticket. The fastest way from Shoreline is to go north on I-5, exit on 221 before you get to Mount Vernon. Go west on the Fir Island Road as if going to LaConner, turn right on Best Road and drive north following the tulip signs.

The resort is near the Canadian border, Birch Bay and the town of Blaine.

Semiahmoo means "half moon" and describes the shape of the bay on which it is located.

The resort provides a base to many of the close by scenic vistas of the area.

The resort has a golf and country club.

Daffodils are blooming

Lee and Roger Lageschulte were so inspired by Sunday's balmy weather that they put the top down on the convertible and cruised on out to the Skagit Valley to check out what was happening.

The daffodils are late this year, because of the cold winter. But Mt. Baker was stunning,

Snow geese are still in all the pastures, we saw my favorite barn by La Conner, and finally another beautiful view of a mountain range as we drove toward the freeway on the back roads from La Conner going toward Arlington.

Heavenly day and I think everyone was out somewhere. We came by Richmond Beach Park on the way home and it was filled to capacity.

Destinations: WW II Mosquito flies at Paine Field Skyfair

Sunday, July 23, 2017

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

The Flying Heritage Skyfair, on Saturday, July 22, featured the collection's newest warbird.

The Royal Air Force World War II twin-engine de Havilland Mosquito was on display and, along with other aircraft, flew for the crowd at Paine Field in south Everett.

More than 7,700 of the aircraft were built during the war but at most only three are still flying, including the Flying Heritage plane.

From a distance the Mosquito looks like a typical metal airplane, but a closer look reveals waves of wood grain in its fuselage.

When it was developed in 1940 it was the fastest military aircraft in the world.

The Mosquito was used as a fighter-light bomber, light bomber, night fighter, and as a unarmed photo-reconnaissance during the war years.

Who knew the Vikings made it to Green Lake?

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Probably the goofiest Seafair event has always been the Milk Carton Derby.

Rumored to be seaworthy

Since 1972, this quirky celebration of creativity and boatmanship features nearly 100 colorful milk carton boats of all shapes and design. Children, adults, families and businesses build milk carton watercraft and compete on the waters of Green Lake for prizes and bragging rights.

Usually about half of them break apart and sink, but they just have to stay afloat long enough to be judged.

The goal is to stay afloat - at least for a while

The police keep a watchful eye on the contestants in case they have to fish them out of the water.

On the shore, onlookers cheer on the contestants.

Commercial entry

The event is sponsored by Safeway, Albertsons, Lucerne, Boeing, Hyperlite, Starbucks, Alaska Airlines, Albert Lee, Oracle, and Busby Junk Removal.

It was held on Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Green Lake in north Seattle.

Destinations: Arlington Air Show

Friday, July 14, 2017

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

Just an hour north of Shoreline the 50th Annual Arlington Fly-In Airshow was held July 7th through 9th. Hundreds of small personal planes flew into Arlington Field and many pilots and family members camped out under the wings of their aircraft.

There was entertainment for everyone. A person could view antique aircraft, historic military vehicles, and watch world class aerosport performances.

A wonderfully restored Lockheed Electra 12A Junior was on display. The first flight of the 12As series was on June 27, 1936 and there were 130 total built. The Junior was slightly smaller than the custom built 10A for Amelia Earhart's around the world flight in 1937.

During World War II this plane served the Free French Air Force flying military leadership such as General Charles de Gaulle around to various locations.

Flying in close formation were two warbirds of World World II. The USAAF's P-47 Thunderbolt and the Royal Air Force's Hawker Hurricane.

The P-47 had heavy armor, eight guns, and a powerful radial engine. It weighed nearly five tons empty, more than any other single engine fighter.

The Hawker Hurricane was not as famous as the British Spitfire but it destroyed more German aircraft because it was used mainly to attack enemy bombers and the Spitfire to destroy enemy fighters.

Aerobatic pilot Renny Price is a retired airline captain and has logged over 23,000 hours since his first flight in 1969. Renny dives his Russian designed and built Sukhoi-29 during his performance. The Sukhoi is considered to be the very best two place unlimited competition aircraft in the world today.

Veteran air show pilot and performer John Mrazek follows his son in a Harvard Mark IV. Richard is flying a Yak 18T.

The two Mrazek are performing a spectacular aerial ballet.

Vicky Benzing makes a low pass in front of the crowd with the Cascade mountain range in the background. Her flying career has spanned over thirty years. Vicky is also a skydiver and an air racer. In 2015 Vicky made history as the "Fastest Woman Racer" when she qualified at the Reno Air Races at 469 mile an hour.

The historic Georgetown Steam Plant in Seattle will celebrate its 110th anniversary with a free open house, Saturday, June 10, from 10am – 2pm with live musical performances from a group of Georgetown artists, a hot dog cart and free guided history tours.

The Georgetown Steam Plant is a National Historic Landmark constructed 1906-1907 which generated energy for the first time on June 22, 1907. Created to energize some of Seattle’s first electric streetcar lines, including the interurban running Everett to Shoreline to Tacoma, the reinforced concrete building is among the first of its kind on the west coast and contains the last two vertical Curtis steam turbine generators known to exist in their original positions.

Seattle City Light has owned the facility since 1951 and it was completely decommissioned in 1977. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1977 and a Seattle Landmark in 1984. City Light staff and volunteers host free open houses for the public the second Saturday of every month from 10am – 2pm with guided tours at 11am and 1pm.

More information about the Georgetown Steam Plant can be found here or by calling 206-763-2542.

It’s hard to imagine a more powerful antidote to the winter doldrums than a visit to the NW Flower and Garden Show! This year’s “Taste of Spring” theme celebrates growing and enjoying food outdoors with family and friends. You’ll see edibles cleverly worked into each of the 20 Display Gardens. The gardens are diverse, inspirational and full of take-home ideas for your garden.

An Evening in the Mountains

While there were 20 outstanding gardens to consider, my favorite was “An Evening in the Mountains,” designed by Ryan Gaither of Choice Landscapes in Mount Vernon. The designer used color, texture and layout masterfully to create a warm and inviting mountain retreat. Boulders, a natural stone patio, and a pondless waterfall go beautifully with the plant material chosen for the garden. The rustic structures don’t detract from the beauty of the natural surroundings. A few carefully chosen décor items along with subtle lighting add to the ambience. Edibles included in this design are blueberry bushes, strawberries, salad greens and herbs. A most alluring scene!

Bugs Abode: Life Under the Lettuce Leaf

“Bugs Abode: Life Under the Lettuce Leaf” is a unique garden with a cartoon-like quality to it. This is Fancy Fronds Nursery’s fanciful creation by Judith Jones and Vanca Lumsden. Larger than life beneficial insects work the garden keeping it healthy and clean while they recycle organics and control pests. Bugs spend their time off at the Compost Café and nearby watering holes. Bright Insect hotels provide safe havens for all workers. What a good reminder that beneficial Insects should be encouraged in every garden!

The Fruits of Our Labor

The large contorted filbert is the focal point in this back yard filled with rock outcroppings. Elegantly and artistically pruned specimen trees of filbert and apple add beauty to the landscape as well as bearing fruit each year. With their garden “The Fruits of Our Labor” Elandan Gardens’ Dan and Will Robinson have created another design stunning in its simple beauty.

5. Nature Perfect Landscaping, “Good Times, Great Food.” Designed by Landen Moore
Guests won’t go hungry here, with piping hot pizza served from a wood-fired oven. The chef is just steps away from a selection of herbs. Complementing the oven and rustic outdoor fireplace is a heavy natural stone table, rough-hewn cedar arbors and a bubbly water feature.

We sometimes forget that there’s more to the Flower and Garden show than show gardens. For those in need, there’s ample opportunity for ‘Retail Therapy’ via the 350 vendors at the Garden Marketplace. Quality plants, bulbs and seeds, one of a kind art, clothing and accessories, garden tools and food products abound. There’s a Tasting Corner, which is new for the 2017 show, where you can sample wonderful specialty foods and beverages. There are tasty new and expanded food and beverage offerings throughout the show.

City Living vignettes by designers and local nurseries offer outdoor living ideas for those living in smaller spaces such as condos or apartments.
