Destinations: Admiralty Head Lighthouse has new exhibit on the history of Pacific Northwest lighthouses

Thursday, March 14, 2024

Admiralty Head Lighthouse at Fort Casey

The Admiralty Head Lighthouse at Fort Casey Historical State Park will open later than usual, in mid-April, with an exciting update to its exhibits.

The lighthouse is a popular attraction on Whidbey Island that attracts more than 50,000 visitors a year. It will reopen with museum-quality interpretive panels that promise improved readability and new ways to interact with the two Fresnel lenses on display.

The previous exhibits were in place for nearly 15 years – and some longer. They told the broader story of Fort Casey State Park, while the new exhibits focus on the history of Pacific Northwest lighthouses.

A few steadfast Fort Casey partners helped make this happen, including Keepers of Admiralty Head Lighthouse. The Lighthouse Environmental Program group of volunteer docents contributed $50,000 to the project using proceeds from the gift shop they run at Fort Casey. The rest of the $160,000 budget came from the sale of State Parks specialty license plates.

The Admiralty Head Lighthouse was constructed from 1901 to 1903. It was designed in Spanish mission style and is unique among Northwest lighthouses. The lighthouse stands as a remnant of early 20th century maritime safety and navigation tools that changed rapidly with the advancement of technology.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission manages more than 100 state parks and properties totaling approximately 120,000 acres. The Commission provides a variety of recreation opportunities for citizens and provides stewardship protection for a diverse array of natural, cultural and historic resources.

Exceptional Quality Watermedia Paintings from Around the World Chosen
for NWWS 83rd International Open Exhibition
In-person Gallery Show Oct 14 – Nov 12, 2023
Awards reception Oct 28, 2023

Juror Stan Kurth has picked 75 watermedia paintings out of 395 submitted for the Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS) 83rd International Open Exhibition.

The exceptional quality paintings from around the world will be on display for public viewing at Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park on Camano Island, Washington, October 14 through November 12, 2023. More information and directions here

Award winning artist and signature member of the National Watercolor Society and other societies, Kurth found the task of choosing just 75 pieces daunting.

“There were many quality paintings not accepted,” he said. The artwork entered represents 34 US states and 10 countries. Those accepted include a wonderful variety of styles and subjects. He goes on to encourage those not accepted to continue their good work and paint from the soul.

The artists’ awards reception is October 28, 2023 2:30 to 5:00pm Pacific Time at the Matzke Gallery.

Kurth will hand out over $13,000 total in cash and merchandise. Top cash awards are first place $2,000, second $1,300, third $850, and the Purchase Award $1,000.

“The exhibition venue is a short scenic drive north of Seattle and a perfect place to see some fine quality watermedia paintings,” exhibition chair Molly LeMaster adds.
“Bring the family and friends and meet the artists. Light refreshments will be served. I can’t think of a better way to spend a lovely fall afternoon. All are invited.”

As part of the 83rd International Open Exhibition, Kurth will instruct 22 participants October 23 – 26, 2023 in a hands-on workshop at ArtWorks in Edmonds, Washington

Online registration is open at www.nwws.org. Costs for the four-day workshop for NWWS members is $450 and $525 for non-members. Stan is teaching his intuitive process and reinforcing artists to trust their own creativity.

Destinations: The Washington State International Kite Festival August 21-27, 2023 at Long Beach, Washington

Thursday, July 27, 2023

August 21-27, 2023 at Long Beach, Washington

By Diane Hettrick

The earliest date I could find on the International Kite Festival webpage was 1983 but judging by the number and type of events, it must have been going for a lot longer.

Did you know there are fighter kites? There are and there are multiple fight competitions.

Did you know that kites dance? Apparently they fly them in formations like programmed drones at the Olympics. Except the kites answer to the wind, not a controller.

There are events for seniors, children, handicapped people,

There are over a dozen types and shapes of kites and events for each of them:
  • Single line flats kites, bowed kites, dimensional kites, delta kites, flexible kites
  • Single line kites by purpose: fighter kites, Rokkaku kites, figure kites
  • Multiple single line kites: trains and centipedes, arch trains, figure kites
  • Multi line sports kites
  • Multi line power kites
Fortunately, there are no quizzes and nothing to prevent you from enjoying them without knowing what they are.

It's no wonder that it's a seven day event.

If you have time, visit the World Kite Museum

Destinations: The Pioneer Square Habitat Beach

Tuesday, July 4, 2023

The Pioneer Square Habitat Beach is located just south of Colman Dock on the Seattle waterfront and in easy walking distance from Pioneer Square and the stadiums. Photo credit Tim Rice.

The Pioneer Square Habitat Beach is part of a suite of marine habitat improvements implemented in conjunction with the first phase of the Elliott Bay Seawall Replacement Project and was designed with a special focus on encouraging juvenile salmon migration.

When the existing waterfront was first developed, many of the native intertidal elements were lost including sloping beaches, crevices and vegetated hiding places for fish. Restoring the function of a natural shoreline and improving ecosystem productivity is an important goal of the Waterfront Seattle program and the new Waterfront Park.

Concurrent with the opening of the beach on July 1, 2023 Seattle Center will begin its new role as the City’s lead department for operations of a new Waterfront Park, with a dedicated grounds keeping and security team that will be on site and on hand to help maintain Waterfront Park spaces and to help keep them safe.

After the summer peak period, Habitat Beach will be temporarily closed this fall to accommodate the installation of indigenous artwork by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, the historic Washington Street Boat Landing, located beside Pioneer Square Habitat Beach, includes a beautifully restored space for an exciting future tenant.

Friends of Waterfront Seattle will be working with a concessionaire on improvements through the fall and both the Boat Landing and the beach will be open and active by next spring.

Destinations: Agencies work to address landslide impacts on SR 504 to Johnston Ridge Observatory

Saturday, May 20, 2023

The upper portion of SR 504 leading to the Johnston Ridge Observatory in Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is still closed after a massive slide over the weekend and likely will be for quite some time. The instability of the hillside means we have no time frame yet for when reopening work may start. Debris from the hillside fell about 2,000 feet, covering the road and causing catastrophic damage to the Spirit Lake Outlet Bridge. Photo from WSDOT

VANCOUVER - On Sunday evening, May 14, 2023 around 9pm a landslide caused significant damage to the upper portion of State Route 504 at milepost 49, leading up to the Johnston Ridge Observatory north of Mount St. Helens. The event followed a recent warming trend and significant snowmelt.

The slide washed out an 85-foot bridge, damaged the roadway, and severed power to Johnston Ridge Observatory. No one was injured because of the incident and twelve members of the public who were stranded overnight at Johnston Ridge Observatory were safely flown out the following morning.

In coordination with federal agencies, the Washington State Department of Transportation closed the highway to all travelers. Travel along SR 504 remains open with multiple scenic viewpoints up to milepost 43 near the Science and Learning Center at Coldwater.

There is currently no access to Coldwater Lake, the Hummocks Trail, and the Johnston Ridge Observatory. For safety, WSDOT and federal agencies strongly encourage people not to venture beyond the highway closure location due to the severity of the unstable hillside.

The USDA Forest Service is in the process of exploring alternative options for visitors who would like to visit the north side of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument this summer and develop a plan to manage the influx of visitors in a safe manner.

Several other visitor centers located along SR 504 remain open to the public, including scenic viewpoints where visitors can see Mount St. Helens and learn about the history, eruption, and recovery of the volcano. As the snow melts and forest service roads open for the season, additional sites on the Monument and surrounding communities will begin to open for visitors to explore.

WSDOT and federal agencies are working together to assess the slide area and develop next steps. Due to continued landslide instability, data collection is being conducted from the air.
