Shorecrest High School senior teaches financial literacy in local schools

Monday, January 4, 2016

Elizabeth Holmdahl
Shorecrest DECA
The President of Shorecrest High School DECA, Elizabeth Holmdahl, spent the past few years developing and launching the “Making Sense of Money” campaign to improve the financial literacy of students in Shoreline schools.

According to a 2013 youth financial literacy survey by Charles Schwab, only 32% of young adults understand credit card interest and fees, only 20% are familiar with 401(k) plans, and less than 30% of young adults have a basic knowledge of investing.

The “Making Sense of Money” campaign is designed to improve these statistics for teenagers and young adults in the Shoreline School District.

In developing her campaign, Elizabeth recognized three distinct target audiences and developed curriculums to meet their needs.

The first curriculum was created for high school students, the second for middle school students, and the final curriculum to educate fellow DECA club members to ensure the financial literacy program will continue when she leaves for college next year.

Curriculum resources were provided to local youth-focused organizations (the YMCA and the Boys and Girls Clubs) with the intent of sharing the material with an even larger audience.

The campaign was sponsored by Pemco Insurance, the City of Shoreline, the City of Lake Forest Park, Lake Forest Park Rotary, Peterson Sullivan LLP, and the YMCA.

With the support of DECA Advisor Emily Wray and members of the Shorecrest DECA Club, Elizabeth presented “Making Sense of Money” at local schools through a series of lectures on topics such as writing a check, using insurance to minimize risk, establishing a savings account, paying taxes, budgeting effectively, and planning a career. She presented the material to more than 625 students throughout 2014 and 2015.

A thirty-page Financial Literacy Promotion Plan, which outlined her work to improve financial literacy, was presented to the judges at the Washington State DECA Career De-velopment Conference in March and was awarded First Place.

DECA Advisor Emily Wray stated that “Elizabeth has taken a financial epidemic in teenagers and young adults and created a curriculum that is easy to understand, very informative and approachable for students to achieve.
Through her dedication to making finance a noteworthy topic, she has proven to be a professional, organized and powerful student lecturer who is highly regarded amongst her peers. The Shorecrest DECA Chapter has enjoyed watching her presentations grow with each target audience.”

The “Making Sense of Money” program continues this year. With increased use of technology in her presentations and refinements to the curriculum, Elizabeth will present the program to an additional 1,500 students in 2016.

Elizabeth is enthusiastic about the success of the program and has received positive comments from students who have attended her presentations.

According to Shorecrest DECA Fundraising Coordinator, Evietta Chapman, “The presentations have been a big hit with the students. They are really engaged and interested in what Elizabeth has to say about personal finance.”

Elizabeth is proud to have been a key player in improving financial literacy in the Shoreline School District and intends to start a similar program in college.

DECA is an international organization which prepares students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Washington State DECA reports that nearly 12,000 high school students in our state participate in DECA clubs. Washington DECA is the third-largest program in the United States.

Hello Syre, Parkwood, Echo Lake, Meridian Park, and Highland Terrace parents!

Shorewood High School's DECA club is hosting a dance for your children from 6:30 to 8:30pm on December 16 at Shorewood (17300 Fremont Ave N, Shoreline).

The event will be located in the cafeteria and the gym, and the entrance is at the school's main entrance on 175th street.

Tickets cost $10 per child, but adults get in free! All of the money raised from the event goes towards funding our DECA competitions later in the year.

Once admitted, everything is all inclusive: your child will have access to ice cream, snacks, arts and crafts, games, and dancing -- all for free!

The dance is SockHop themed, so crazy socks and bright colors are highly encouraged, although not required, even for parents!

We do require that there is at least one parent for every four kids, so we will have parents indicate which children they are responsible upon entrance to the dance. Make sure to plan accordingly.

This dance is a fun opportunity for your elementary children to see their future school and also meet their future classmates. DECA hopes to see you there!

For questions or more information, contact Shorewood DECA President Kyle Berquist.

Shoreline DECA team the most decorated since 1992

Tuesday, March 3, 2015

The DECA 2015 team at the Collegiate DECA
 Pacific Northwest Career Development Conference
held Feb. 19-21 in Victoria, BC.

SCC cleaned up at the recent regional DECA competition. All 17 of the participants made it to the next round of competition and 15 of the17 students placed in the top 3 in their events. Most decorated team since 1992.

Shoreline Community College’s DECA 2015 team returned from the Collegiate DECA Pacific Northwest Career Development Conference held Feb. 19-21 in Victoria, BC with five first place wins, making this year’s team the most decorated in recent memory.

Of the 17 students representing Shoreline in 13 different events at this year’s conference, 15 students placed third or better. All 17 Shoreline participants qualified for the 2015 Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference, April 17-22, in Orlando, Fla. The International Conference will involve 1,200 students from Canada, China and the United States.

DECA has been active at Shoreline Community College since 1966 and this is the best overall finish by our students since 1992. This year’s performance is made all the more impressive by the fact that this marked the first year competing for most of DECA 2015’s members — only one of the several first-place-winning team members is a second-year DECA competitor.

In addition, the team competing in the category of Emerging Technologies, made up of Nicolas Ho and (MJ) Munkhjargal Jambalsuren, both first-year DECA students, even managed to receive a perfect score of 100 points from each of their three judges. They earned this top score despite a setback that caused Ho to have to present his and Jambalsuren’s presentation alone.

DECA faculty advisor David Starr said, “It has been an honor to work with such an outstanding group of students who have successfully represented Shoreline’s commitment to excellence in their international competition.”

The DECA 2015 Team’s collection of awards
from the Collegiate DECA Pacific Northwest Career Development
Conference held Feb. 19-21 in Victoria, BC.

  • Jessica Irby, 1st Place, Hospitality Marketing
  • Kenneth Lo and Pei-Chen Wang, 1st Place, International Marketing

  • Omar Marouf and Liem Nguyen, 2nd Place, Sports & Entertainment Marketing
  • Spiridon Pappas and Simran Sandhu, 2nd Place, International Marketing
  • Shaina Hibbert, 2nd Hospitality Marketing

  • Resmin Sengider, 2nd Place, Advertising Campaign
  • Rachel Degginger, 3rd Place, Retail Management

Also qualifying for the International Conference were:
  • Suzette Dutton, Entrepreneurship

Shoreline Community College student wins national DECA contest with t-shirt design

Friday, February 17, 2012

Jason Hwang's winning t-shirt design

Shoreline Community College student, Shorewood graduate, and DECA member Jason Hwang learned recently that he is the winner of the Second Annual Collegiate DECA ICDC (International Career DECA Conference) T-shirt Design Contest.

The freshman at Shoreline is excited about his win, but is very low key about it. Hwang said he wasn’t asked by his instructor or DECA advisor David Starr to participate in the t-shirt design contest. “I just did it,” he said, not really thinking about the possibility of winning a national contest.

This wasn’t his first go at a t-shirt competition. When Hwang was a DECA member at Shorewood High School he submitted designs for the high school t-shirt design contests. “I used to design a lot of t-shirts and sweatshirts for our chapter (Shorewood),” he said. Hwang said he was frustrated that the DECA t-shirts his high school team wore were not very attractive so he entered the competition as a college student.

The winning T-shirt is simple in design Hwang says. It’s red, cursive lettering with a white outline on a dark t-shirt. Hwang’s design will be printed on t-shirts and other marketing items to be sold at the national conference in Salt Lake City April 28-May 1, 2012.

Hwang put his skills to work last year designing a t-shirt with SCC Prime Minister Luke Tchao to support Japan relief efforts. They found sponsors and raised over $30,000 with their help.
"After being successful with this, it made it a lot easier for me to enter competitions or just design for fun," Hwang said.

Hwang won a $250 honorarium and 12 t-shirts, which he plans on sharing with Shoreline’s DECA team members.

The DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) is the highlight of the DECA year. Thousands of students, advisors, businesspersons and alumni gather for several days. Participants compete in one of several competitive events. The top competitors in each event are recognized for their outstanding achievements. In addition to the competitive events, many students and advisors participate in a variety of leadership and career advancing academies.

DECA (known as Delta Epsilon Chi 60 years ago) prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

Nick Brazell, Jen Danner, and Neil Gupta were honored for writing the Shorewood student store operations manual and receiving a gold level status for the store; they presented its marketing and operational practices and how the store tries to provide healthy options. There were approximately 100 teams participating in their event.

The Shorewood students wrote a 40-page store operations manual that met certain operational requirements. As a store, the students had to show competencies in employee training, management policies, inventory management, healthy options, cash handling procedures and accounting practices. With its gold ranking, the Shorewood team was invited to present its best practices and the top 16 teams received awards.

Damon Oliveto is the Shorewood DECA advisor.
