DECA recognizes King's High School chapter for outstanding school-based enterprise

Friday, February 4, 2022

Weston Campbell, left, and Miller Mann are 11th grade students at King's

A school-based enterprise managed by two DECA students at King’s High School has been awarded with “Gold Level” certification and will be recognized at DECA’s upcoming International Career Development Conference in Atlanta.

School-based enterprises, or “SBE’s”, are entrepreneurial operations managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate marketing, finance, hospitality and management under the direction of DECA chapter advisors.

For their SBE, King’s High School students Miller Mann and Weston Campbell submitted a comprehensive presentation on The Market, an on-campus retail outlet.

Stated one of the DECA judges in response to Miller’s and Weston’s presentation: “I just had the pleasure of judging the SBE submission on The Market... WOW. Very impressed with how these kids adapted, stayed flexible, enhanced their vision and kept the focus positive while they faced numerous challenges. A wonderful story, and one that was presented beautifully.”

King’s H.S. DECA Chapter Advisor Marian Morris added:

“I am so impressed with the perseverance and tenacity of Miller and Weston. This year has been one challenge after another, and these two young men have met each challenge with a positive attitude. Their problem-solving skills and creativity are reflected in The Market’s success this year.”

Shorecrest DECA advisor Emily Wray is thrilled with the results of the Area II DECA competition.

It is with great please that I announce the amazing results of the Area 2 DECA Competition. Shorecrest brought 91 professionally dressed participants to compete in areas of Marketing, Finance, Hospitality or Business.
We had a lot of new DECA members participating this year along with some veteran DECA members!
All in all, we were sad with tight rankings for some and brought to tears watching a very happy young man live out his dreams to talk about his start up streetwear business plan.
It may have been the highlight of my DECA career!
We had 41 State Qualifiers! There were over 900 students present from 17 high schools.   I could gush more but just ask the kids about their experience …. here we go!

The School-Based Enterprise at Shorecrest High School and at Shorewood High School were among 391 school-based enterprises in the United States achieving Gold Level Certification (or Gold Level Recertification) this year and will be recognized at DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia April 21-24, 2018.

The students who worked on the Shorecrest certification were Gabby Harness and Reilly Creech with the assistance of their advisor, Emily Wray.  The school-based enterprise at Shorecrest High School has operated for 20+ years.
The students who worked on the Shorewood certification were Jared Sanagustin, Quynh-Nhu Le, and Violet Schermer with the assistance of their advisors, Damon Oliveto and Wendi Lynagh. The school-based enterprise at Shorewood High School has operated for 43 years.

A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods and services to meet the needs of the market. Students learn business by running an actual business such as a student store.

SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in Marketing, Finance, Hospitality and Management. Marketing educators and DECA advisors have utilized this effective educational tool for over four decades to provide their students with realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction, enhance 21st century skill development, and prepare students for college and careers.

DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification Program was developed to provide recognition for outstanding achievement by school-based enterprises and to motivate SBEs to strive for excellence and growth.

SBEs can be certified at three levels: Bronze, Silver or Gold. In order to apply for the certification, SBEs must submit extensive documentation that demonstrates their adherence to various marketing and retail standards. After the documentation is submitted, a review committee evaluates the documentation to determine which level of certification has been achieved.

The DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) is the highlight of the DECA year. Thousands of students, advisors, businesspersons and alumni gather for several days. Participants compete in one of several competitive events. The top competitors in each event are recognized for their outstanding achievements. In addition to the competitive events, many students and advisors participate in a variety of leadership and career advancing academies.
