Holiday Gathering of Remembrance at Acacia, Sunday, December 5

Thursday, November 25, 2010

Holidays can be a hard time for those remembering loved ones who are no longer with them. "Everyone is so happy and upbeat for Christmas," one person said, "you don't want to rain gloom on their joy, but when you are grieving, it's hard to maintain the facade."

Recognizing this, the Acacia Funeral Home Chapel at 14951 Bothell Way NE in Lake Forest Park 98155, holds an annual Holiday Gathering of Remembrance. This year it will be on Sunday, December 5, from 1 - 2 pm.

Vince Larkin, Acacia's General Manager, provides these details:

Our Gathering is for the entire community, honoring families we have served and memories of loved ones who cannot be with us this season. The gathering will include special music, words of encouragement and practical advice for coping with grief and loss during the holidays. Refreshments will be served.

You will be invited to hang a personalized ornament on our Memorial Tree (ornaments are provided). The Memorial Tree will be in our Fireside Room and the ornaments will be available after Thanksgiving then throughout the holidays. If you would like your loved one included in our special tribute, please bring their photograph into Acacia by Thursday, December 3, 2010. Also please let us know if you are unable to attend and would like us to place an ornament in honor of a friend or loved one. Call 206-362-5525 for additional information.

Death near Shoreline Community College - update

Saturday, September 4, 2010

By Diane Hettrick

The Sheriff's Office has confirmed that a 42 year old woman was found dead in a homeless camp in a wooded area near SCC about 1:20 pm on Friday, September 3. She appeared to have died overnight. She was a resident of the camp and had no connection to the college. More will be known after the Medical Examiner completes the autopsy, but Shoreline Police Chief Dan Pingrey says that the latest information does not indicate any obvious signs of foul play.

Jim Hills of SCC spoke to the Medical Examiner's office on Saturday. A spokesman told him that toxicology tests have been ordered and can take eight to ten weeks to be returned. Cause of death won't be determined until those test results are available.

Neighborhood leaders believe that the camp would be in the area just north of the college playing field. Highland Terrace board member Greg Logan said he had seen one small encampment in that area, up the side of the ridge in a place not especially accessible.

Homeless camps in Shoreline often are near the end of bus lines, in areas which are wooded or overgrown.

In June 2007, a homeless woman was found dead in the north end of Echo Lake. She had been seen in the area by the lake on several occasions and may have been living in a camp in the bushes at Echo Lake Park. Since that time, City Parks maintenance crews have pruned back and cleared out the overgrowth and removed several dumpsters full of stuff left behind by the campers.

Death in Hamlin Park

Friday, November 6, 2009

Last night a park visitor was killed by falling debris at Hamlin Park during the windstorm. The accident occurred after dark in the southeast corner of the park near the ADA walkway that leads from the parking lot off of 25th NE to fields #5 and #6. The top of what appears to be a healthy mature white pine apparently broke off in the storm and struck a gentleman while walking in the park with his wife and dog.

Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.
