“We included DEBUTS in the OBT performance season last year, and we are excited to bring it back with new creative pieces by contemporary choreographers this season,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Donald Byrd, the award-winning local choreographer, often referred to as ‘citizen artist,’ and Arcadian Broad, a soloist at The Sarasota Ballet, who mesmerized OBT audiences with his dashing performance as Basilio in our production of Don Quixote. We look forward to delighting our patrons with this celebration of creativity in contemporary ballet.”

This production will include a “Meet the Artists” Q/A session on Saturday, February 18, 2023, immediately following the performance. Audience members will have an exciting opportunity to meet both choreographers and learn more about their creative process of bringing new works to life on stage.

JHP Cultural and Diversity Legacy presents “Woshishije Cultural Group in 2023”

Friday, December 16, 2022

JHP Cultural and Diversity Legacy presents
“Woshishije Cultural Group in 2023”

‘Woshishije’ in the Ga Language from the Greater Accra Region of Ghana means “Our Beginning”. As many of you know already, JHP Legacy seeks to promote cultural performances that are unique to specific nations, regions, ethnicities, and tribes.

JHP Legacy is proud to announce that from January through November of 2023, the renowned Ghanaian group would be touring our city, county and our Puget sound region providing over 60+ unique performances that include but not limited to traditional dances and dance-drama performances.

Woshishije is known for Ghanaian Traditional dances like Atsiagbekor, Fume Fume, Kpanlogo dance and drumming. This particular dance and drumming is the unique dance and drumming festival of the Ga Traditional area, especially for the people of Labadi, Bukom and Teshie-Nungua area. The Northern dances that are particular to harvest periods are also uniquely performed by this group to demonstrate thanksgiving periods. Damba-Takai, Bamaya, Bawa are some of the many dances that are performed with exaggerated costumes and wooden swords to tell a harvest story.

JHP is thrilled to announce that performances will begin in January at the Shoreline Conference Center, Shoreline Community College, University of Washington and proceed to outdoor performances at Cromwell Park, Paramount Park, Brugger’s Bog Park, when we begin our summer in 2023.

Woshishije believes that culture is an essential dimension of development in every individual’s life and therefore, development solutions should be tailored to locally relevant traditions. institutions should make use of local expertise and knowledge in order to augment development. It is good to state emphatically that the founding members of the group were not educated formally but still had the idea and the need to use dance and drumming for community development.

In view of this, Woshishije has a recognized performance titled “Installation on the Stage”

Over the past ten years, one of the unique performances which is proprietary to the group is “the installation of a paramount King/Chief in public”. This is a live performance of about 16-24 people on stage, with a setting of a palace where an instalment of a Chief is exhibited. The pouring of libation, the recitation of the oath, the linguist recitation on the drums and everything related to this is so unique and well-crafted to perfection. The group decided to craft this as a form of education and the uniqueness of this is worth seeing.

The Pacific NW would get to experience traditional dances that are exceptionally unique to the Ga-Dangbe ethnic group in Ghana as well as the Ewe tribe and part of the Northern Region of Ghana. Woshishije would provide dance workshops in our school district and other community drum and dance workshops shall be organized.

Specific Dates and times shall be provided as the New Year begins.

The 2022 Autumn Auction and Costume Ball is taking place at the Nile Shrine Center in Mountlake Terrace on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

Irish Dance Open House
August 30, 2022

  • 5:00-5:30pm (3-5 year olds),
  • 5:45-6:15 (6-10 year olds)
EDMONDS, WA - Skipping just feels natural in the summer, and so does leaping through the beautiful trails of the Pacific Northwest and spinning on the beach in Edmonds! And if your child loves skipping, leaping, and spinning, then they will truly adore Irish dancing. At the Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dancing’s free Open House on August 30, children will hop, leap, and spin around the dancing floor while celebrating the end of the summer.

In our Summer Open House, we will explore the basics of this living tradition (yes, it is the dance form featured in the latest Netflix film, Riverdance). Your budding dancer can use up that last bit of summer energy at the Open House before entering into the new school year. From the youngest little jumper at 3 years old to the skilled artist, any dancer can hop on into the dance studio and experience a bit of Irish culture at this Open House.

Irish dancing has been a mainstay of Irish culture since the earliest day of the celts. The traditional music and dance scene were deeply entwined, as throughout the generations, locals would gather to play music and dance. The dance form evolved from its most traditional roots when the Gaelic League was founded in 1893 that promoted Irish language and culture which included dance.

At the Carroll-Henderson School, dancers experience the harmony between the traditional music and dance. Dancers learn the traditional, artistic, and competitive aspects of Irish dancing.

Come experience this living tradition for free at our Irish Dance Open House. Registration is required online at https://www.chirishdance.com/open-class.

Carnival in Venice from “Satanella”
Choreography: Marius Petipa
Music: Césare Pugni

The Carnival in Venice is an excerpt from the three-act ballet Satanella. When Marius Petipa revived Satanella in 1866, Le Carnaval de Venise was included in the third act of the ballet. Today, the Satanella pas de deux is a staple of the classical ballet repertoire.

Davis Dances: Dance 1
Choreography: Arcadian Broad
Music: Dance 1 by Oliver Davis

The inspiration for this piece came from the idea of two fierce and unstoppable forces (dancers) mixing together to create a harmonious union that wouldn’t exist with the two forces on their own.

Pas de Trois from “Le Corsaire”
Choreography: Marius Petipa
Music: Césare Pugni

Loosely based on the 1814 poem The Corsair by Lord Byron, the ballet narrates the story of the passionate pirate Conrad who falls in love with Medora, a beautiful Greek girl. OBT presents an excerpt from this classic ballet, featuring a pa de trois with Medora, Conrad, and his slave Ali.

Passing By
Choreography: Arcadian Broad
Music: The Girl with the Flaxen Hair by Claude Debussy

Passing By is inspired by that split-second moment in a place of commute like a train station, airport, etc. when you see someone so beautiful and interesting from across the room that you are completely transfixed.

1 in 10^2,685,000
Choreography: Alberto Gaspar
Music: MGV (Musique à Grande Vitesse) by Michael Nyman

This 28-minute piece celebrates the joy and the miracle of being alive in the present moment. The odds of being alive at any given moment are 1 in 10^2,685,000. With such infinitesimal odds, each of us is a living miracle.

Summer Performance and Olympic Ballet Theatre’s 2021-2022 season is proudly sponsored by the Edmonds Arts Commission, the Hazel Miller Foundation, the Hubbard Family Foundation, The Morgan Fund, and Seattle NorthCountry.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Arcadian Broad is from Titusville, Florida. At 10 years old, he began dancing in various styles such as tap, hip-hop, and jazz. After receiving a scholarship at ADC-IBC, he attended the Orlando Ballet summer program. He went on to train at the Juilliard School in New York. At 16, Arcadian was hired as a professional company dancer with Orlando Ballet. Under the direction of Robert Hill, he became the youngest hire in the company's history to date. Arcadian is also a dual choreographer and composer.

Alberto Gaspar holds an engineering degree in International Business and different diplomas from Tecnológico de Monterrey and Harvard University. His experience as a choreographer began at Saint Louis Ballet, where he created a piece for the Pulitzer Museum that included a live cello piece and several designs from upcoming fashion designers.

“1 in 10^2,685,000” is Alberto’s second time creating a contemporary piece for a professional classical ballet company, and he is very excited and honored to have this opportunity with Olympic Ballet Theatre again. His first piece choreographed for OBT in 2019 was Transfigurations.

Edmonds, WA – Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) presents a three-act production of Don Quixote, with choreography staged after the production by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky.

This classical comedic ballet follows the adventures of Don Quixote and his mischievous companion Sancho Panza on a heart-warming quest for love, honor, and justice. With an unforgettable score by Ludwig Minkus, colorful costumes, and brand new stage art by award-winning designer John Iacovelli and Seattle artist Ruth Gilmore, this family-friendly production is perfect for audiences of all ages.

“We have been planning to present Don Quixote several years ago, but had to postpone the production because of the pandemic,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“It’s exciting to be able to finally see our vision for this ballet come to life and to give our company dancers and Olympic Ballet School students an opportunity to perform so many of these iconic roles.”

Community dancing returns to Third Place Commons

Tuesday, April 26, 2022

There’s big news at Third Place Commons. While community transmission remains moderate and controlled, Third Place Commons has updated the community dancing policy to allow dancing once again during the Weekend Music program.

This is especially exciting given the great lineup of highly danceable bands coming up at Third Place Commons including:
  • 4/29 – Left Turn on Blue (R/B, soul, pop, rock ‘n’ roll)
  • 4/30 – Gin Creek (blues)
  • 5/6 – Ranger & the Re-Arrangers (hot club swing)
  • 5/7 - Kim Maguire Trio (swing and Latin)
  • 5/13 – Michele D’Amour & the Love Dealers (funky blues)
  • 5/14 – Purple Passion Swing Band (Swing, Big Band)

More great music continues throughout May and into the summer. So check the Third Place Commons online calendar for all the details.

The return of dancing is great news. However, in light of the ongoing pandemic and still increasing infection rates, members of the public are encouraged to take precautions to keep our community and Third Place Commons staff members safe.

Dancing can be a high exertion activity that causes heavy breathing and in close proximity to others when the dance floor is crowded. In addition, asymptomatic spread of COVID is common, especially among vaccinated individuals. Other activities like changing partners increase potential exposure further.

Because many people in our community are in vulnerable populations, if you would like to dance, please consider wearing a mask to protect others and to minimize your own potential exposure. Especially when there are large crowds in the space.

Another beloved Third Place Commons program is about to return as well, of course, and that’s the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market. As always, the LFP Farmers Market opens for the season on Mother’s Day. So save the date for May 8 and be sure to hit the market for your Mother’s Day flowers and so much more! And if you love the music, dancing, the farmers market, or any of the other community events that Third Place Commons presents each year, you can help support it all with a GiveBIG gift this year.

GiveBIG officially takes place on May 3rd and 4th, but you can make your gift right now to support this vital community resource.

Third Place Commons – a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization – has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space with TPC At Home programs.

Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day 2022 in Edmonds with Irish Dance Open House

March 19, 2022
  • 11:15-12:00 (3-6 year olds)
  • 12:15-1:00 (7-12 year olds)
  • 1:00-1:45 (Adults)

EDMONDS, WA - St. Patrick’s Day is back on the calendar this 2022, and local Edmonds school, the Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dancing, is celebrating this Irish holiday with free open Irish dancing classes for all ages.

From the youngest little jumper at 3 years old to an adult looking for an energetic fitness class can hop on into the dance studio and experience a bit of Irish culture.

“We were heartbroken to miss our 2020 and 2021 St. Patrick’s Day seasons. However, safety for our dancers is our number one priority, and through this time, we prioritized our dancers’ and community’s health.
"Now that we can safely resume our performances and share this beautiful traditional art form with our community again, we are welcoming in all people to have a taste of Irish dancing!” said head teacher and owner, Lauren Carroll-Bolger.

Registration is required online at https://www.chirishdance.com/programs.

Seattle Dance Fitness’s new Shoreline location instructs social distancing classes with mind, body positive message

Jessica Gleason, owner of Seattle Dance Fitness, opened her first dance studio last fall after teaching online dance classes since the pandemic began in March 2020.

Gleason first found her love for dance fitness after participating in Zumba classes and teaching little kids’ creative movement classes at her local gym. Now she is transitioning that love to her new studio.

Located in north Shoreline across from Aurora Village, the new dance studio opened its doors to the public in the fall of last year. Dance students can attend via Zoom or in-person at the new location, participating in non-performative hip-hop dance with a mind- and body-positive message.

The studio features dance fitness, an increasingly popular workout where students participate in group freestyle dancing while getting the benefits of a full body aerobic workout.

Gleason has a background in dance and strong ties with the Shoreline community as an involved PTA mom. She received her bachelor’s degree in Dance Theater from the University of Washington and was a professional modern dancer through her 20s.

Gleason started teaching her own adult classes in 2014, because she enjoyed the welcoming, non-competitive aspect of dance fitness.

“I just thought, well, if adults are having fun doing non-performative dance for fitness dance fun, kids are probably going to want to do it too,” Gleason said.

Working in after-school enrichment programs in Shoreline, she was able to teach her own hip-hop kids dance fitness classes. Before the pandemic, she was teaching in 14 different Seattle area schools.

“It was really popular,” she said. “We did follow-along songs, we did a game, a little bit of choreography, and we did free dancing.”

When the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, Gleason turned to teaching her dance classes online.

“I couldn’t be in schools anymore, so I quickly switched all of my programming onto Zoom, teaching out of my house, with some other instructors as well. In the meantime, for the adult program, I started renting space in a couple of different studios around town,” Gleason said.

With 65 adult monthly membership holders and in-person facilities reopening with COVID-19 guidelines, Gleason began her search for the perfect dance studio.

Gleason was able to find her dance studio’s home in a standalone warehouse building near Costco in Shoreline, which used to be a CrossFit gym.

“I'm a Shoreline mom. And so, it worked. The location and the space and everything was kind of perfect,” Gleason said about the new studio.

The studio has a large mirror, but Gleason chooses to cover the mirror to dissuade students from a competitive mindset. She focused on fun and bettering the mind and body in an inclusive space.

Seattle Dance Fitness offers classes for all ages. For toddlers 1 to 4 years old, there are move and grow sessions, where they have fun with props, games, and music. Elementary and middle school kids can join the hip-hop kids dance fitness classes. In these sessions, students dance and move to the top hip-hop and pop hits, often called a kids' dance party

Raphael Laprade is a member with two daughters who attend classes at Seattle Dance Fitness.

“They like the pop hip-hop feel to it, and the fact that they’re learning the moves too, and choreography. They love hip-hop kids,” Laprade said about the class.

To ensure all students’ safety during classes, dance instructors are fully vaccinated, and all in-person attendees over age 12 must provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. All state regulated COVID-19 policies must be followed, including wearing masks indoors. Luckily, the dance studio has a large garage door that helps keep the room ventilated.

“The big garage door is just amazing,” Laprade said, “and even with or without a pandemic, you know, it just gets that air flowing.”

Adult members get a range of dance and fitness classes, from yoga, kickboxing, and booty camp to cardio dance party and the wildly popular WERQ cardio dance fitness. Cardio dance party are one-hour sessions of clean clubbing and dancing with your class while getting fit. Each class helps to burn between 400-1000 calories, Gleason said.

“Seattle Dance Fitness is like the community,” Laprade said. “It's like you come in and we're all just best friends and just supportive, so that coupled with the best workout is gold.”

Gleason holds events at her dance studio, like movie nights, night markets, fundraisers, and of course, clean clubbing nights. Last December, Seattle Dance Fitness partnered with Seattle T2P2, an initiative dedicated to ending period poverty. Throughout the month, students could donate menstrual products when they came to dance classes or night markets. Gleason said the donation drive was successful and the products were delivered to T2P2 to be redistributed to those in need.

“I think we ended up driving about 5,000 different tampons and pads to them by collecting them at the studio. We also did a cash donation for them,” Gleason said.

Gleason often has guest instructors for members. This February, Latina dance instructor Marietta Villalobos will be instructing a twerk and pelvic dance class called Be My Valentwerk at the studio. The booty movement class will teach students the history of where twerk came from, and to destigmatize the woman’s body.

The class covers different booty movements, such as twerk, Brazilian Funk, Latin rhythms, African rhythms, Caribbean rhythms, and North American rhythms. Villalobos wants students to feel comfortable in their bodies.

Seattle Dance Fitness shows love and support to the LGBTQ+ community.

“My main goal is to break the stigma around women's bodies and that's where I feel like most of my work comes from,” Villalobos said.

Villalobos said her classes empower women while connecting with their bodies in their own way.

“But it's most gratifying to me to fight the patriarchy through our bodies and taking back ownership of it,” Villalobos said.
“So, my main work comes from helping people heal, primarily women, but it's open to anybody -- he, she, they – because we hold a lot of trauma in our pelvic bowl, in our body and especially women. We hold a lot of trauma in our womb.”
