Skandia Midsommarfest June 30, 2024 at St. Edward in Kenmore

Celebrating Midsommar in the Pacific Northwest!
Sunday, June 30, 2024
11am to 6pm
Free Admission

Sign up TODAY to volunteer!

The summer solstice is celebrated by all the Nordic countries, although the celebration may be called by different names, and celebrated in different ways on different days. In Sweden it is called “Midsommar,” so Midsommarfest means Midsommar party or festival.

In Norway, the celebration of the solstice is called Sankt Hans Aften or Jonsok-kveld. In Denmark, the celebration is called Sankthans or Sankthansaften ("St. John's Eve") and in Finland it is called Juhannus.

Midsommarfest, as presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with  raising of a garlanded Midsommar pole, a serpentine dance around the pole, and scores of costumed musicians and dancers - traditions practiced in Sweden for centuries.

Over the years since the 1959 inception of Skandia Midsommarfest, the festival has expanded to include contributions from all the Nordic countries so that the rich cultural diversity of all those lands can be experienced by Skandia Midsommarfest attendees.

Spectators are invited to help hoist the 35-foot (previously 45-foot) pole with their muscles or cheers, and then to join in the rousing långdans (serpentine running dance) around the pole, accompanied by the stirring music of massed musicians. Entertainment, food, crafts activities and good times continue throughout the park grounds.

A special focus of Midsommarfest is the Hemslöjdsmarknad - an avenue of traditional crafts where carefully selected crafts people demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Traditional midsommar food and other Scandinavian delicacies will be offered.

And a flower crown -- the classic midsommarkrans -- ready to decorate to your own taste, will add the finishing touch to your midsommar celebration.

Midsommarfest showcases a wealth of wonderful music and dancing by the Northwest's premier Nordic folk musicians and dancers (and this area boasts some of the best in the Western Hemisphere).

Allspel 2024 led by Ellen Wijsman

Tunes to be played 2x each, in addition to the first, midsommar långdans played longer. After the långdans, start with Ringnessen; end with Stockholmslåten, with probably ~5-6 of the remaining tunes in between. (not in final order)

1. Fjällnäs polska (Midsommarpolskan Långdans, Dalarna Sweden)
2. Ringnesen (Reinlender, Norway)
3. Snar å ta åt (Rørospols, Norway)
4. Stens vals (Waltz, Dalarna,Sweden)
5. Grannas Britta (Slängpolska, Ostergotland Sweden)

Olympic Ballet Theatre presents Summer Performance June 1, 2024 at Edmonds Center for the Arts

Summer Performance

Featuring excerpts from the classical ballet “Raymonda” and a contemporary work “A Gentle Prelude” by Donald Byrd

June 1, 2024, at 7 PM
Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA)
410 4th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020

Edmonds, WA – Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) closes the 2023-24 performance season with an eclectic production showcasing the diversity of ballet styles. This annual production honors tradition and celebrates innovation, featuring excerpts from classical ballets by famed choreographers of the past and exciting works by contemporary choreographers of today.

The 2024 production of Summer Performance presents Raymonda Suite, excerpts from Marius Petipa’s famed classical ballet Raymonda, and A Gentle Prelude, choreographed by Donald Byrd, Seattle-based Artistic Director of Spectrum Dance Theatre.

Raymonda (Suite)
Choreography: Marius Petipa
Music: Alexander Glazunov
Premiere: Imperial Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg, Russia, 1898

Raymonda is a classical ballet in three acts known for its exquisite choreography and beautiful music. Set in the 12th century, this ballet tells the love story of the beautiful young countess, Raymonda, and her fiancé who saves her from being abducted by a Saracen knight. Olympic Ballet Theatre will present excerpts from this timeless ballet, showcasing the technical prowess of its dancers.

A Gentle Prelude
Choreography: Donald Byrd
Music: Duke Ellington
Premiere: February 29, 2000

A Gentle Prelude is a movement from Donald Byrd's evening-length three-act abstract dance work, "In A Different Light," that explores the lesser-known musical compositions of the great Duke Ellington. Ellington (1899-1974), who achieved success as a composer, orchestrator, bandleader, and pianist, is often considered the greatest composer in the history of jazz music and one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

A Gentle Prelude focuses on the solo piano and small ensemble works of Ellington as opposed to his more well-known "big band" pieces. The dance is a work for 7 dancers who appear to be in an imaginary 1930s romantic ballroom, and it details different types of relationships among shifting groups of dancers. Solos, duets, trios, and quartets variously describe how people connect and miss making connections.

Humility : Drift, a site-responsive dance performance and exploration of embodied ecology on Saturday May 18, 2024

Thursday, May 16, 2024

Sara Caplan. Photo by Allina Yang

Nicole Loeffler-Gladstone presents Humility : Drift, a site-responsive dance performance and exploration of embodied ecology, on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 11am - 12:30pm at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline, WA. (Exact location here)

The event is free, but RSVP here

About the performance: Dancers will lead audience members on a short walk, followed by a performance that traverses the beach terrain. Humility : Drift is a dance taught to people by the beach ecology itself. It’s an experiment in relating to the more-than-human world through sensation-based empathy. The title is inspired by the etymological relationship between “humility,” to lower oneself, and the Latin word “humus,” or soil.

Nicole Loeffler-Gladstone talks with young audience members.

Afterward, audience members are invited to take a free copy of our "embodied ecology cards," created by local scientific illustrator Madison Mayfield, and explore beach ecology through movement. Performers will remain on site to answer questions about the cards and methodology.

About the embodied ecology cards: The cards are inspired by traditional field guides, but they question Western naturalism’s presumed hierarchy of knowledge by including “scores,” or movement suggestions, alongside the expected factual information.

The scores distill hours of site-responsive dance improvisation and present basic movement concepts in accessible terms. Participants use the cards to engage with ecology through physical sensation, imagination, and play. This practice builds knowledge and empathy simultaneously, resulting in a deeper emotional investment in land as teacher, rather than object.

About the artists:

Nicole Loeffler-Gladstone is the director of Humility : Drift. She received a 4Culture Artist Grant in support of the project. She has 12 years of experience directing and dancing in NYC, Chicago, and Seattle. Select additional support includes a City of Shoreline Art Cottage Artist in Residence for Humility : Drift, and a University of Washington Body Space Time residency to support dance and music ensemble improvisation. Nicole is also a naturalist with Washington State University Beach Watchers.

Sara Caplan is a performer, choreographer and teacher based in Seattle. She has performed in works choreographed by Kendra Portier, Mariah Maloney, Beth Gill, Elise Beers AachixQaaduug, Bri Wilson, Shenandoah Harris, Madeleine Gregor and Anja Kellner-Rogers. She currently dances for Karin Stevens Dance and collaborates on various independent movement projects.

Madison Mayfield is a natural history artist, taxidermist, educator, and museum professional based in Seattle, WA. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology: Ecology, Evolution & Conservation as well as a certificate in Natural History Illustration from the University of Washington.

Maia Melene D’urfé is a dancer and choreographer in the contemporary, house, and breaking communities of Seattle. They work with dancers, musicians and mixed media artists to create worlds of movement that are full of visceral texture, abstraction, and vivid musicality. Through their dancing, choreography, and curation, Maia works on exploring abstract and personal thoughts through movement, and works to meld their experience with street styles, contemporary dance and music to create something intricate and visceral.

Ellie van Bever is a freelance dancer and producer based in Seattle. She has worked with Christopher K. Morgan and Artists, Jillian Peña, Katie Scherman and Artists, Amirov Dance Theater, AnA and others. Since moving to Seattle she has worked with Beth Twigs of The Gray and is a current member of Karin Stevens Dance. She recently produced and danced in Dragonslayer, an immersive dance-theater performance, at Good Shepherd Center with AnA.

Artist statement: We honor the Indigenous people of the Salish Sea. We honor dxʷdəwʔabš (Duwamish), dxʷsəq̓ q̓ʷəbš (Suquamish), sduhubš (Snohomish), and dxʷlilap (Tulalip) people, and other Indigenous bands, tribes, and people who cared for and continue to care for these lands and waters since time immemorial. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from kekektwsidat, or place of gathering kinnikinik, in all of its brilliance.

This project is part of our effort to reckon with our own backgrounds, and what it means to live in a good way amidst the wreckage of this world. We believe that dance improvisation offers unique tools for learning how to pay attention. In doing so, we may begin to feel anempathetic and relational bond with the life around us. We want to know: Can sensation lead to attention, attention to devotion, devotion to change?

This work is supported in part by a grant from 4Culture.

Edmonds, WA – Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) presents a three-act production of Don Quixote, with choreography staged after the production by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky.

This classical comedic ballet follows the adventures of Don Quixote and his mischievous companion Sancho Panza on a heart-warming quest for love, honor, and justice. With an unforgettable score by Ludwig Minkus, colorful costumes, and gorgeous stage art by the late award-winning designer John Iacovelli and Seattle artist Ruth Gilmore, this family-friendly production is perfect for audiences of all ages.

Arcadian Broad and Ashley Baszto
“We presented the full production of Don Quixote two years ago, and due to popular demand, we are thrilled to bring it back to our audiences this May,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“Our company has grown so much in the last two years, it’s exciting to showcase the talents of our new and experienced company dancers, as well as to bring guest artists from Cleveland Ballet to perform in the lead roles.
"This beloved classical ballet also gives our Olympic Ballet School students a great opportunity to learn iconic choreography, comedic acting, and performing on stage alongside professional dancers.”

Svetlana Svinko and Lorenzo Pontiggia from Cleveland Ballet are this year’s dancers in the roles of Kitri and Basilio, and Frank Borg returns in the comic role of Sancho Panza.

In addition to bringing this historical ballet to the stage in Edmonds, OBT is taking a display of production materials to a local library as part of the community outreach efforts to introduce the art of ballet and the classic novel about Don Quixote to the public.

Visitors at the Edmonds Library can enjoy viewing sparkling tutus and toreador costumes, fun props, and a miniature stage model complete with a sketch of every backdrop. “We hope to bring this wonderful story to more families in our community and get kids excited about the performing arts,” said Gorboulev and Vinson.

PNW Fleadh: An Irish Festival in the Northwest - Sunday March 24, 2024 in Everett

Wednesday, March 13, 2024

THE BEST OF IRISH CULTURE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

PNW Fleadh: An Irish Festival in the Northwest

Sunday, March 24, 2024 5:00 - 9:00 PM

On a Sunday evening, join the newly founded Irish & Celtic Society of Snohomish County in the final celebration of the St. Patrick’s Day season - the PNW Fleadh.

‘Fleadh’ (pronounced fl-aw)is an Irish word for festival, and this Irish festival will feature Irish musicians, dancers, chefs, and athletes across the Puget Sound.

Audience members will be entranced with the rhythms, tastes, and talents while celebrating the best of Irish culture.

“While we highlight Irish dancing and culture throughout the year, St. Patrick’s Day presents an opportunity to share the vibrant culture of Ireland with all in our community.
"The PNW Fleadh is a rare opportunity to see so many talented Irish performers in one place, and my dancers are honored to be a part of this evening’s entertainment,” commented Lauren Carroll-Bolger of the Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dance.
The Carroll-Henderson Irish dancers are among the many performers of the evening.

March features many Irish celebrations throughout Seattle, but there are limited performances for audiences in North Seattle.

The Irish & Celtic Society of North Snohomish County is changing that with the PNW Fleadh and other upcoming performances. The PNW Fleadh is the ultimate end-celebration of the month and offers an opportunity for audiences not wanting to make the trek into the city.

In addition to many performances, guests are offered dinner by Shawn O’Donnells and can take part in an Irish bake-off and tea tasting competition.

For the bake-off, inspired Irish bakers can create their best soda and/or brown bread and submit their loaves for judgment by an esteemed panel of Irish bread enthusiasts.

Guests can also partake in a blind Irish tea tasting competition and see if they can identify the difference between Barrys or Lyons Irish tea.

Full Festival Line-Up:
  • Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dance
  • Grafton Street Irish Dance Academy

Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) continues its 2023-2024 performance season with DEBUTS in February, presenting new works by contemporary choreographers. This production features Luna by Norbert De La Cruz III and Keep Me in Mind by Eva Stone.

“This is OBT’s third annual production of Debuts, and every year we look forward to bringing creative new works to our audience with this rep,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“Some of OBT’s patrons saw a sneak peek of Eva Stone’s tantalizing piece during our Autumn Auction & Dinner last November, and we can’t wait to present the full premiere in February.
"We are also thrilled to see OBT dancers work again with Norbert De La Cruz III, whose dramatic work, Until the Mermaid Drags You Under, was featured in the first production of Debuts in 2022. It is an honor to collaborate with both of these outstanding choreographers and to share the joy of contemporary ballet with our patrons.”

This production will include a “Meet the Artists” Q&A session on Saturday, February 17, 2024, immediately following the performance. Audience members will have an exciting opportunity to meet both choreographers and learn more about their creative process of bringing new works to life on stage.

ABOUT DEBUTS

Luna
Choreography: Norbert De La Cruz III
Music: Original score by Nathan Prillaman
Premiere: 2017, New York City Ballet

Luna was created for the dancers at the New York City Ballet for the NY Choreographic Institute in 2017.

In collaboration with composer and film producer Nathan Prillaman, Luna is a nebulous dance piece that was born out of a search for enchantment, wonder, and surrealism in a challenging world. Luna was the first ballet Norbert created upon forgoing his performance career, and in some ways, he wanted to unearth the gravity of this departure and relaunch his imagination through the lucidity of fantasy.

Through fluid neo-classical vocabulary, Luna oscillates within seraphic energies between Earth and the Moon, foregrounding the ballerina as a conduit into the divine. Part ceremonial and part spiritual, the dance mirrors the magnetism between people and their sacred relationships.

The piece orbits from idea to idea, melding from one constellation to another. It invites the audience to make associations between earthly desires and holding onto a dreamworld, gracefully shifting between the rigorous and the beautiful and from virtuosity into tranquility.

Keep Me in Mind
Choreography: Eva Stone
Music: Peggy Lee
Premiere: Olympic Ballet Theatre

Seattle-based choreographer/producer Eva Stone creates a glamorous and seductive world in her latest work Keep Me in Mind, set to the music of legendary singer and songwriter Peggy Lee. Stone digs deep into the methods of persuasion and attraction alongside a lush musical exploration of Lee’s tempting songs. Using a variety of dance styles from modern jazz to Neo-classical ballet, Stone offers up a moving and memorable journey of desire, memory, and longing.
