Dahlias for Seniors project 2022 completed

Bouquets at the Ridgecrest Pub

Please join us for a Fall and Winter Dahlia Care Webinar Tuesday October 18, 2022 from 1-2:30pm

Another successful Dahlias for Seniors fundraiser generated donations to the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center this summer. Generous efforts by neighbors and friends, including Megan Kogut and her Ridgecrest Public House and Drumlin family eatery, were once again the key. Flowers were also available at the Senior Center.

We had an unusually wet, cold May-June this year, causing our blooming season to begin late and reducing blossom numbers. Loyal supporters came through, taking beautiful flowers home and making the fundraiser a success.

And, if you grow dahlias in the Puget Sound area and your flowers did not thrive this year, be consoled – it was the spring weather, not you, that made it so.

To wrap up the season, you are invited to attend a free webinar on Fall and Winter Dahlia Care this week Tuesday, October 18th, from 1-2:30pm in Zoom. Topics to be covered include:
  • When the season’s over – timing and cutting your dahlia plants back
  • Options for wintering tubers – leaving them in the ground or digging & storing options
  • Correct digging, washing, and cutting tubers before storage
  • Preventing tuber injury from freezing, drying out, molding over winter
  • Preparing a garden for next Spring
Please call the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center to register for the webinar 206-365-1536.

Dahlias are back at the Senior Center - and Ridgecrest Pub

Monday, August 23, 2021

Story and Photos by John Hibbs, ND

Hello dahlia lovers! I’ve met many of you over the last few years, and our numbers are growing in Shoreline!

The 2021 Dahlias for Seniors Project began in early May with a very successful tuber sale at the Shoreline Senior Center. Spring came early this year, and the beds at my home in Shoreline are now producing 300-400 blooms/week. Abundant bouquets are available, and we’ve also provided flowers for two weddings and a couple birthdays.

The Dahlias For Seniors Project produces dahlia blossoms for donations to our local Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center since 2015 (18560 1st Ave NE # 1, Shoreline 98155).

You may pick up your bouquets two ways.
  • Call the SL-LFP Senior Center (206-365-1536) or just stop by. Fresh flowers are delivered to the Senior Center Mondays and Wednesdays around 8am.
  • Or, drop by the Ridgecrest Public House 7 days a week after 3pm (520 NE 165th St, Shoreline, WA 98155). Have an excellent pint, or not, then take home a feast of color. Fresh flowers are delivered to the RPH every Friday, Sunday and Tuesday between 3-5pm.
  • As available, I can provide flowers for your special occasion; contact me at hibbs.j@gmail.com

During the continuing pandemic (big sigh…), our Senior Center continues to make and deliver many meals to homebound seniors Monday through Friday, offers social services, counseling and mental health help, exercise opportunities, foot care, and much more. Some of this is virtual, of course. The point is – they are still here doing vital, excellent work, and still need our support.

I can’t repeat enough how good it is to have the Ridgecrest Public House and neighbor-proprietor par excellence Megan Kogut with the Project again in 2021. You won’t hear it from Megan, but she matches all donations for flowers purchased at the Pub. If there is a better community supporter (and community creator) in Shoreline than Megan, I don’t know who that might be.

So, please do visit this vibrant Ridgecrest hub or its new sibling venue next door, the Drumlin, now serving food and beverage indoors and out.

And many thanks to my joyful support team -- Andrea, Elaine, Corinna, and Jeff, who help with watering, cutting, delivery and promotion.

Thanks much for your support!

2021 Dahlias for Seniors Tuber Sale Thursday to benefit the Senior Center

2021 Dahlias for Seniors Tuber Sale
Thursday May 6, 2021 Noon-2pm

At the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center

“Yay, we’re going to make it through this – let’s plant dahlias!”

Ridgecrest resident John Hibbs will hold the 6th annual Dahlias for Seniors fundraiser this Thursday May 6, 2021 at Noon with a tubers-by-donation event at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center (18560 1st Ave NE #1, Shoreline 98155).

Hibbs, who supervises the naturopathic clinic at the Senior Center, is an avid dahlia grower. Each year the fundraiser starts in May with a sale of extra tubers from Hibbs’ extensive dahlia beds in his Shoreline yard.

It is planting time now. Hibbs has more than 100 different varieties, and has the tubers of about 70 varieties left over for the sale this year.

Asking donation will be $2 for most tubers.

The event will be indoors in the Senior Center cafeteria, safely conducted per current guidelines. Masks will be required, and the ample space will allow for good distancing between display tables.

Bouquets at the Ridgecrest Pub last year. Photo by John Hibbs

When the summer bloom starts, bouquets of mixed dahlias will be available for the Dahlias for Seniors fundraiser at the Senior Center and at the Ridgecrest Pub (520 NE 165th Shoreline 98155), as well as to the Drumlin music and local food and brew venue next door.

Hibbs says that "With the warm Spring we’re having, dahlias should be blooming by mid-July."

Once the blooming season starts, fresh blooms will be delivered on Mondays and Wednesdays to the Senior Center, and Tuesdays-Fridays-Sundays to the Ridgecrest Pub and Drumlin.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, under the guidance of Executive Director Theresa LaCroix, is a priceless community resource. During the many months of lockdown and particular hardship for Shoreline’s seniors, our senior center continued to provide essential services.

This included fully prepared-and-delivered Meals On Wheels, social worker assistance, virtual exercise classes and social groups.

In coordination with the Shoreline Fire Department, the Senior Center initiated a Covid-19 vaccination program for homebound seniors.

The Senior Center is in the stand-alone building at the south end of the Shoreline Center, at 1st NE and NE 185th, and will offer bouquets at the counter beginning mid-July.

John Hibbs will have 70 varieties of dahlia tubers and answer questions at Thursday's tuber event.

The Ridgecrest Public House has been our fundraising Partner since the beginning, and has generously matched donations for bouquets they distribute. The RPH is a warm, friendly community hub, and chose responsibly to close for the time being during an earlier surge of COVID-19 risk.

The Drumlin is the Ridgecrest Pub’s neighbor-partner venue and second project of Megan Kogut, Shoreline community member extraordinaire, and the Drumlin is open and well worth a visit.

Both venues will support the 2021 Dahlias for Seniors project by offering the bouquets on their counters, beginning in about mid-July.

Please stop by these Shoreline gems, the Drumlin now and the RPH when it reopens, enjoy the company, and, when the blooming starts, pick up some flowers.

The Drumlin and the Ridgecrest Public House are located at 520 NE 165th St in Shoreline WA 98155 near the Crest Theatre.

Dahlias For Seniors Project 2020 is up and running

Story and photos by John Hibbs, ND

Thanks for waiting, dahlia lovers. We had a cold May and the dahlias have been pokey, but they are now here and blooming gangbusters!

Twins - two beautiful purple-pink identical blooms, misted with raindrops

The Dahlias For Seniors Project produces dahlia blossoms for donations to our local Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center since 2015 (18560 1st Ave NE # 1, Shoreline 98155)

Of over 100 varieties in my yard in Shoreline, about half of them are producing lots of flowers now, the other half coming along in the next week or two. In full stride, we’ll have up to 300-400 blossoms/week for the fundraiser. The 2019 Project generated $4300, and we’re on pace to do this again!

You may pick up your bouquets two ways.
  • Call the SL-LFP Senior Center ((206-365-1536) and arrange to stop by.
  • Or, drop by the Ridgecrest Public House 7 days a week after 3pm (520 NE 165th St, Shoreline, WA 98155, please wear a mask). Have an excellent pint, or not, then take home a riot of color.

During the pandemic, our Senior Center continues to make and deliver many meals to homebound seniors Monday through Friday, offers social services, counseling and mental health help, exercise opportunities, foot care, and much more. Some of this is virtual, of course. The point is – they are still here doing excellent work, and still need our support.

Dahlias for Seniors Project 2019 a huge success - free tutorial Monday on overwintering tubers

Saturday, November 23, 2019

Text and Photos
by John Hibbs, ND
aka Dr. Dahlia

With our cold and wet September-October the dahlia season ended in Shoreline a little early.

But, with the early, warm start we got this summer and our perfect gardening weather, at final tally the Dahlias for Seniors Project 2019 generated $4185 for our very own Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center!

This beat all expectations and eclipses last year’s success by a large margin.

Front desk volunteers at Senior Center

We began our fundraising season with a hugely successful dahlia tuber sale at the Senior Center in early May (and we’ll do this again next May – watch the SAN), exchanging nearly 450 tubers for almost $800 in donations in under 2 hours.

And in the garden, remember that wonderful, sunny April-May we had? It led to mature dahlia blossoms available for donations by mid-July, and the plants continued to luxuriate in the not-too-hot and occasional rain of summer 2019, blooming prolifically.

Thank you so very much to all the people of Shoreline that bought flowers at the Senior Center and at the Ridgecrest Public House between mid-July and the end of September.

John with Chef Janice at the Foss Home market
The table was donated - and they sold out the flowers!

Thank you to Foss Home and Village on Greenwood for donating a table at their annual August Farmer’s Market – we sold every flower, some 230 blossoms.

Thank you to two citizens of Shoreline who wed, and decorated their joyous event with Dahlias for Seniors pinks, yellows and whites.

Thank you to my wonderful Shoreline neighbors, who watered, weeded, cut and delivered when I was on vacation.

And special thanks to Megan Kogut, proprietor extraordinaire of the Ridgecrest Public House, 520 NE 165th St in Shoreline

Ridgecrest Public House has sold bouquets
and matched sales for four years

This year was the 4th that Megan and her RPH partnered in Dahlias for Seniors, and they sold 128 bouquets during our season, then matched all donations!

If you haven’t visited the Ridgecrest Public House, stop in. It’s charming, neighborly, and has fast become a community center in this neck of the woods.

Finally, by popular request I’m giving a one-hour tutorial on caring for your dahlia tubers overwinter, both in and out of the ground, and preparing your soil for spring planting.

Please come to the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center this Monday, November 25, 2019, at 9am.

It’s free, donations to SL-LFPSC accepted. (And I’ll do a follow-up in April on planting and growing wonderful dahlias – again, watch the SAN.)

All the best, and I’ll see you next season.

Bouquets are waiting for you at the Ridgecrest Pub

By John Hibbs, ND

Thanks again to everyone who came to the May dahlia tuber sale. In addition to raising almost $800 for our Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, there will a lot more dahlias blooming in our town this summer!

It’s been an exceptional growing season, with lots of sun and rain, and the Dahlias for Seniors fundraiser for the SL-LFP Senior Center is off to an early start. The dahlias (my front yard!) are exploding about two weeks ahead of when they were expected.

Dahlias for Seniors is partnering again this year with Megan Kogut, savvy and community-minded owner of Shoreline’s own Ridgecrest Public House (520 NE 165th St, Shoreline 98155). Yesterday I made first delivery to the Pub, and you can pick up a bouquet seven evenings a week there, now through October, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays shortly after opening.

And like last summer, in two weeks you can begin picking up bouquets for a donation at the SL-LFP Senior Center (18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155); deliveries Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after about 10:30am.

Donations for dahlia tubers raise $780 for the Senior Center

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

John Hibbs and a happy 'customer'

By John Hibbs, Shoreline resident

The Dahlias For Seniors season opener tuber event was a great success! We had 47 visitors and sold out; people took home about 450 tubers of 70 different dahlia varieties. We generated $780 for the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, tripling the sum raised at last year’s May tuber event! (See previous article). Thank you so much, friends and people of Shoreline!

With cold drizzle falling the morning of the event, it moved indoors to the Conference Room of the Senior Center. Some people came for a variety or two, some came for 20-40 varieties, jumping into dahlia gardening whole hog. It was exciting to hear that some folks have found their inspiration from purchasing our fundraiser dahlia bouquets at the Ridgecrest Pub or the Senior Center last summer.

John's dahlias are growing

We are getting a strong start to this dahlia season. I planted the first weekend in May, and with plenty of sun, some light drizzle, and nights between 50 and 60 degrees all but one of my tubers are up; most of them already 6”-12” tall. With some further good fortune we’re on course to see bouquets in mid-July.

If you are just getting your tubers into the ground, that’s fine; you’ll see lots of flowers in about 10 weeks, and they’ll produce heavily through October. Plant your tubers about 4” deep in fertile, well-draining soil into which you’ve worked a few tablespoons of bone meal, with their little growing “eye” or tip pointed upwards. Until the green shoot breaks ground in a week or two, don’t let the soil dry out, and don’t overwater. At this point they are like little sponges and soak up water like crazy, can waterlog. Once they’re growing vertically, they can handle and need lots of water, because they’ll then be growing bigger quickly.

I’ll keep you posted about the Dahlias For Seniors bouquets. Once again they will be available for a donation at the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center (18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155) and at the Ridgecrest Public House (520 NE 165th St, Shoreline 98155), beginning mid-to-late July.

Dahlias for Senior Center: 70 varieties of tubers available Monday for a donation

Ridgecrest resident John Hibbs kicks off the 4th annual Dahlias for the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center fundraiser this coming Monday morning, May 20, 2019 from 9 - 11am with a tubers-by-donation event.

Hibbs, who supervises the Bastyr naturopathic clinic at the Senior Center, is an avid dahlia grower. Last year, bouquets of mixed dahlias were available in return for a donation at the Senior Center and at the Ridgecrest Pub. The Ridgecrest Pub generously matched donations, and all collections went to the Senior Center.

Neighbors and friends were also able to request custom bouquets for a donation, including larger numbers of blossoms for events, from Hibbs at home.

In all, the dahlias brought in over $2500 for the Senior Center’s general fund in 2018.

It's planting time now. Hibbs has planted his dahlia beds with 110 varieties, and has the tubers of about 70 varieties left over this year.

Says Hibbs, I'm going to kick off the 2019 Dahlias For Seniors Project by having a tuber event at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center from 9-11am on Monday May 20.
With the warm Spring we’ve had, dahlias should be blooming by mid-July.

Once the blooming season starts, fresh blooms will be delivered on Mondays and Thursdays to the Senior Center, and Tuesdays - Fridays - Sundays to the Ridgecrest Pub, 520 NE 165th St, Shoreline 98155.

The Senior Center is in the stand-alone building at the south end of the Shoreline Center, at 1st NE and NE 185th.
