World Concern partners with Joule to supply electricity in disasters

The Joule Battery
Power in case of disaster

In an emergency, communication is vital. World Concern, a Shoreline-based international humanitarian organization, is partnering with startup Joule to supply reliable electricity in disasters through a portable, large capacity battery.

The lithium ion battery can be used in place of regular generators and is lightweight, making it easier to transport to remote locations, such as those where World Concern serves. The Joule battery can provide up to 100 hours of lighting, 720 cell phone charges, or 100 laptop charges, providing essential power during a disaster response.

“The Joule battery will enable World Concern to be on the ground and responding to disasters faster because it supplies the power we need in a sustainable and self-contained way,” explains Chris Sheach, World Concern Deputy Director of Disaster Response. “Our world is increasingly connected, and Joule will help us communicate and stay safe so we can provide lifesaving support to vulnerable people around the world.”

Silent and pollution-free, the portable battery can recharge from traditional wall outlets in a few hours via a built in charger. It can also be charged renewably from solar, or from other sources through one of two 12-volt connectors. The case houses a 1000-watt continuous inverter that delivers power and includes two USB chargers for accessories.

Joule launched a crowdfunding campaign for this innovative tool. Once funded, World Concern will be able to use the battery in emergencies.

More information on the Joule battery here. More information about World Concern’s disaster response and community development programs here.

CRISTA Broadcasting becomes CRISTA Media

Saturday, September 28, 2013

Stan Mak, General Manager and VP
of CRISTA Media

Communications platforms are changing rapidly. How we consume entertainment and information differs dramatically from just a few years ago. With digital options exploding, where does terrestrial radio fit in the current technological environment?

“It’s a synergistic answer. Broadcast radio is not going away. Digital platforms allow radio stations to engage listeners in ways that weren’t possible before,” says Stan Mak, General Manager and Vice President of CRISTA Media.

CRISTA feels the solution is not about selecting one communication platform over another, but rather a combination of communication avenues that makes the CRISTA radio stations more accessible to a broader audience.

In order to reflect these expanded capabilities, the name CRISTA Broadcasting is being changed to CRISTA Media, effective today. The name change will be seen across all CRISTA Media stations and digital platforms, including KCMS SPIRIT 105.3 FM and AM630 KCIS in Seattle, KWPZ PRAISE 106.5 FM in Bellingham, KFMK SPIRIT 105.9 FM in Austin, and PURE MUSIC RADIO, a multi-market HD radio music service.

“Since 2008, CRISTA Broadcasting has steadily invested in digital platforms. In addition to terrestrial radio we’re providing alternative solutions to engage with our listeners and advertisers through a wide variety of digital capabilities. Our digital capabilities include streaming, HD multi-casting, websites, mobile, texting, geo-targeting, search engine optimization, e-auctions and e-business directories,” says Stan Mak.

This powerful combination of on-air radio and digital connections makes the CRISTA brand more accessible to listeners, and for advertising clients it expands the opportunities for creative and compelling campaigns. The continued efforts to expand in the exploding digital world allows CRISTA to better serve the 970,000 weekly listeners in four different markets--Seattle, Austin, Bellingham and Fraser Valley/Vancouver B.C.

Scholarships provide week of camp for children of military families

CRISTA Camps, part of the CRISTA Ministries family, is entering the final fundraising phase for its Operation Xtreme camps for children of military families. Fundraising to date in 2013 has raised nearly $160,000, which has paved the way for 400 kids to experience an unforgettable week of summer camp at one of the two CRISTA Camps properties: Island Lake in Poulsbo, Wash. and Miracle Ranch in Port Orchard, Wash.

“Children of deployed military families often miss out on the chance to be a kid,” said Doug Chase, vice president of CRISTA Camps. “We’ve created Operation Xtreme to honor these families and to provide children with an opportunity to experience summer camp. Operation Xtreme is a chance for our community to share its generosity and make a difference in the lives of local kids.”

With the weeklong Operation Xtreme camps (June 16-22 at Island Lake and June 17-21 at Miracle Ranch) nearing capacity, day camp offerings have been added in an effort to give more military kids the chance to experience camp and are open to boys and girls from first through sixth grade. CRISTA Camps is working to raise an additional $40,000 before the end of June to ensure another 256 children of military families can experience Operation Xtreme in 2013. One hundred percent of donations made go directly to sending these children to camp.

In addition to traditional summer camp activities, Operation Xtreme provides participants with tools they need to cope with stresses that are often associated with being a child in a military family, including separation, frequent relocation and difficulty in school. Counselors and chaplains are an integral part of both Island Lake and Miracle Ranch Camps and provide an added support system for the kids.

To make a donation to Operation Xtreme, nominate a deserving child or find out more, visit Send a Kid.  Additional information about CRISTA Camps or call 877-723-4373.

Victims of home explosion have strong ties to Shoreline

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Hong (Phung) Ingham
According to a new story on King 5.com, the couple who were injured in an explosion caused by a leaking gas service line (see previous story) have been identified as David and Hong (Phung) Ingham of Seattle.

There was a gas leak, possibly from corroded pipes, which allowed natural gas to pool under their home. When Hong flipped the bathroom light switch in the morning, the gas exploded. The couple were able to get out of the house before it continued to explode into small pieces and burn to the ground.

According to King 5, "Hong has been a food service worker at the Crestwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a part of CRISTA Ministries in Shoreline, for nearly ten years. Her brother and sister also work there."  According to our sources, another brother works for the school district.

CRISTA says that "Hong is currently in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center’s intensive care unit. David was discharged on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 27."

"100% of your donation at this page will be provided to Hong and David as they recover from the Sept. 26 tragedy. Thank you for your donation and prayers for their recovery."

ShorelineAreaNews readers reported hearing the explosion from Echo Lake to Kenmore.  Briarcrest readers who were home said that it sounded like a collision, whereas those farther north thought that large tree branches had fallen on the roof.

Record turnout expected for Saturday’s Race to Fight Human Trafficking

Saturday, May 7, 2011

From World Concern staff
World Concern expects more than 1,200 people will run or walk in the “Free Them” 5k on Saturday, a race to stop human trafficking. More people have also signed up to fundraise through social media this year, driven to action because of the reality of modern-day slavery.
“Rain or shine, we’re excited to hold our biggest event of the year,” said World Concern President David Eller. “People get the message: we can prevent this kind of abuse from ever happening.”
World Concern staff and volunteers are putting the course together today and handing out race packets. The event will be held at World Concern’s headquarters, 19303 Fremont Ave. N., in Seattle. The race begins at 9:30 am. Proceeds from the race will go to protect women and children who are vulnerable to trafficking.

Today, nearly 3,000 children will be trafficked around the world. These children are sold as modern-day slaves into the sex industry, forced labor, or used as beggars on the streets.

Carrie Yu, a Seattle resident and mom of two young children, is raising funds through her Facebook and Twitter pages, and will run in the 5k.

“As a parent, it’s heart-breaking to think about,” said Yu. “I can’t imagine having to make the decision to sell a child into slavery in order to survive. I can’t go into the mission field, but I can run for this cause. I can raise money. This is something I can do right now where I am in my life.”
Last year’s event raised $83,000 for World Concern’s anti-trafficking programs, which provide education, job skills and safe havens for victims and those at risk of trafficking in Southeast Asia.

World Concern, part of CRISTA Ministries, is a Christian humanitarian organization that helps lift people out of poverty through activities including microfinance, agriculture, disaster response and small business development. World Concern Africa on High Alert after Osama Bin Laden Killing

Monday, May 2, 2011

From World Concern, CRISTA Ministries
The death of Osama Bin Laden has prompted World Concern’s security director to elevate security awareness across Eastern Africa.
“The potential for some sort of retaliatory move by militant sympathizers is high,” said Nick Archer, World Concern director of security and disaster response.
Archer recommends staff from the Shoreline-based humanitarian organization stay away from public gatherings and transportation hubs.

In the past, Al Quaeda militants have attacked targets in Eastern Africa with ties to America. The most notable attacks include the 1998 bombing of US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
“The news from Pakistan does have an impact on our operations,” said David Eller, World Concern president. “We will continue to work with the communities we’ve been called to serve, but with a heightened awareness of these tensions.”
About 95% of World Concern staff is comprised of people from the countries where we serve. Whenever possible, we work to equip national staff to become leaders and humanitarians in their own country or region.

World Concern offers opportunities for people living in extreme poverty and oppression, without regard to race, religion or gender. One of our primary goals is to foster peace and reconciliation. Whenever possible, we seek avenues for groups in conflict to work together in mutually beneficial ways.

Evan Smith: Crista Master Development Plan leads to lawsuit against City

Monday, June 28, 2010

By Evan Smith
ShorelineAreaNews Politics Writer

The Crista Master Development Plan for the long-term development of the Crista campus has led to a lawsuit against Crista and the City of Shoreline by Deborah Buck, who lives near the Crista campus.

Buck and many of her neighbors are upset about a part of the plan that would provide an entrance to a new early childhood center from the dead-end street that they live on. Crista plans to build the early childhood center and accompanying parking lot near King’s Elementary School.

Buck says that she is concerned not only about added traffic on the quiet cul-de-sac but also about unsafe conditions for cars on a steep hill in winter.

Many also are upset about possible loss of the historic character of buildings on the campus.

In approving the Crista Master Development Plan, the City has required Crista to seek historic status for the Crista administration building and for the King’s High School building, Both date back to the Firland Sanatorium, which once occupied the land that is now the main Crista campus.

But Buck is concerned that other Firland Sanatorium buildings with historic value could be destroyed. Her great uncle was treated there in the early 1900s.

Crista officials deny that they plan to destroy any buildings.

One basis of the lawsuit is the City’s failure to include, in its traffic study, the problems from an entrance from 196th Place to the new pre-school, new parking lot and expanded elementary school.
