Shoreline Police: The thief left a trail of cigarette packs

Friday, November 12, 2021

On Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 1:30am, deputies responded to a commercial burglary alarm at a Shoreline business located in the 600 block of NW Richmond Beach Road.

A deputy arrived and saw that the lower glass pane of the front door was smashed in. The lights were on with no visible movement inside.

Upon further investigation, deputies found a trail of cigarette packs around the back of the building, which they followed. Unfortunately, the cigarette trail went cold. The thief was gone.

As they searched the business, deputies found a large rock on the ground just inside the front door. It was used to break the glass. It appeared the cigarette racks behind the registers were ransacked and loose packs of cigs were strewn across the floor.

A surveillance camera review shows the man, throwing a rock through the glass door around 1:09am. He climbs inside. Two minutes later, the male walks back into camera view carrying a shopping basket filled with what appears to be packs of cigarettes. He climbs back out of the window and walks out of the frame in an eastbound direction. As he escaped, he left that trail of cigarette packs behind.

The suspect appears to be a male with an average build, lighter skin, and short dark hair. He is wearing a gray and blue cap with a white and yellow design on the front, a white face mask, a gray or light-colored jacket or shirt, white gloves, dark pants, and white shoes.

If you recognize the male or have any knowledge of this case, Shoreline detectives want to hear from you. Please call our 24-hour non-emergency number at 206-296-3311 and reference case #C21034612.

AG data breach report: 2021 sets new record for number of data breaches and ransomware attacks

Sunday, November 7, 2021

Attorney General Bob Ferguson released his sixth annual Data Breach Report today.

In the last year, breached businesses and agencies sent 6.3 million notices to Washingtonians — by far the largest number of notifications sent to Washingtonians since the Attorney General’s Office began tracking this number.

2018 set the previous record of 3.5 million breach notices sent to Washingtonians.

The report finds that the number of data breaches reported to the Attorney General’s Office also skyrocketed to 280, blowing past the previous record of 78 and last year’s total of 60. In other words, this year’s total represents a 500 percent increase over last year.

Additionally, the report identifies a tremendous spike in cyberattacks and ransomware incidents.

Ransomware — a type of cyberattack in which cybercriminals use malicious code to hold data hostage in hopes of receiving a ransom payment from the data holders — represents a growing and significant threat to consumers and businesses. The Attorney General’s Office recorded 150 ransomware incidents in 2021 — more than the previous five years combined.

The report includes recommendations to policymakers and best practices for the public to protect their data and minimize risks.

The public can access the Attorney General’s database of breaches here.

Shoreline Police: Ring. Hello? I can't talk right now, I'm in the middle of a DUI investigation

Tuesday, November 2, 2021

On Sunday, October 10, 2021 at 12:32am, a 911 caller reported a possible DUI driver in the vicinity of N 185th St and Corliss Ave N in Shoreline.

The vehicle was seen crossing the center line several times and, at one point, almost hit our caller. The car was described as a silver 2008 Volkswagen Jetta.

Dispatchers issued an informational broadcast (also known as an APB) to local deputies in Shoreline in an effort to locate the vehicle.

Hearing the broadcast, a nearby deputy conducted an area check. He located the Jetta on NE 175th Street and initiated a traffic stop.

The deputy approached the car. He noticed two cans of Bud Light seltzers, one on the passenger seat and the other on floorboard. The driver smelled of alcohol and had droopy, watery eyes.

It also appeared that the driver was confused and had trouble processing the deputy's instructions.

The driver was asked to step out of the car. He stumbled while attempting to stand and almost fell back inside his car.

The driver agreed to submit to a voluntary Field Sobriety Test (FST). In the middle of the process, the driver received a phone call.

The driver held his phone up and looked at who was calling but didn't answer the call. The deputy instructed him to put his phone away, which he did.

A few more minutes into the FST, the driver received yet another phone call.

This time he answered it and told the caller that he was in the middle of a DUI investigation.

The deputy asked the driver if he wanted to continue with the tests. He said he did but he would not hang up the phone.

The male eventually ended the call and suddenly decided he would not resume the field sobriety tests. He was arrested and placed in handcuffs.

The driver was brought to the precinct for DUI processing.

A warrant was obtained for his blood and it was drawn by the nearby Fire Department.

Charges are pending, awaiting blood results from the Washington State Patrol Toxicology lab.

As a reminder, we do not show suspects' faces until they have been formally charged.

Suspected burglar in Woodway was probably a squatter

Monday, November 1, 2021

Woodway Park Road runs north-south between Willow Creek and Deer Creek

The Town of Woodway had a burglary last week on Woodway Park Road. The suspect is still at large, however, it appears to be one person who was attempting to reside on the premises, and not an organized attempt at taking items from the home. They are working with Edmonds Police to identify the suspect. If you see any suspicious persons or vehicles, do not hesitate to call 911.

As the holidays approach, thefts increase as thieves look for opportunities to take packages after they have been delivered.

Thanks to modern technology, it is very affordable to help protect your property by installing doorbell cameras or security cameras around your property. The new cameras can be set to activate your phone or computer and show you live footage when someone is on your property. You can then call the police if you don’t recognize the person and give them information that will aid them in catching a suspect and prosecuting the case.

Woodway Police Chief Correa tells resident to feel free to contact him at police@townofwoodway.com if they have any questions or concerns.

Shoreline Police: 40 miles an hour, smack in to a light pole

On Monday, September 27, 2021 at 2:40am, a deputy was dispatched to a report of an injury collision in the 15500 block of Aurora Ave N in Shoreline.

When he arrived, the deputy noticed the entire back panel of the 2005 Honda Civic had been sheered off and was lying on the sidewalk.

Debris was scattered about and the air bags on the Honda had deployed.

A male approached the deputy and said he was the driver of the vehicle. The driver appeared intoxicated. His face was red and flush, his eyes watery and there was a strong odor of beer coming from his breath.

The male appeared to be very unsteady on his feet and had trouble maintaining his balance.

When asked for his driver’s license and information, the male looked inside his vehicle but could not provide it.

The man was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Incident to arrest, a search of the driver found his wallet in his front pants pocket, which contained the identification he was unable to provide just moments prior.

The male was transported to the precinct and a warrant was obtained for a blood draw.

During that time, the male asked to use the restroom.

Deputies found him fast asleep on a metal bench and had a very difficult time waking him.

Charges were pending, awaiting blood sample analysis from the Washington State Toxicology Lab.

Shoreline Police: Sock. Rock. Liquor. Cigars.

Sunday, October 24, 2021

Burglaries can touch any community. At 5:40am Monday morning, October 4, 2021 King County deputies in Shoreline responded to Walgreens in the 14500 block of Aurora Ave to investigate a commercial alarm.

Deputies were greeted with shattered glass and merchandise scattered on the store's floor. Surveillance cameras show an adult male suspect using a softball-sized rock, concealed in a sock, to destroy the front window. The thief then zeroed in on liquor and cigars. Fortunately the registers held no cash, so our thief could not boost his gains.

It took only four minutes for deputies to respond Monday morning, but the suspect was gone. When suspects are not found, cases like this are reviewed by detectives. Our work doesn't end when our patrol deputies leave the call.

Anyone with information about this case is encouraged to call the King County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at 206-296-3311 and reference case C20131322.

Prolific locker room thief arrested in Everett

Friday, October 22, 2021

EVERETT, WA – A 23 year-old female has been arrested on 96 charges of theft and financial fraud stemming from recent thefts at local fitness centers.

Over the past several months, detectives from the Everett and Mill Creek Police Departments have investigated numerous thefts of bank cards and other personal property from fitness center locker rooms.

A 23 year-old Everett female was identified as the suspect and detectives developed probable cause to arrest her for multiple counts of Theft, ID Theft and Fraud.

Yesterday, officers with the Everett Police Anti-Crime Team witnessed the female exiting a Lynnwood gym and arrested her a short time later at a nearby business where she was purchasing gift cards with a bank card she had just stolen.

The female was arrested without incident. Her boyfriend was also arrested on unrelated warrants while waiting in a car.

During an interview, the suspect admitted to breaking into numerous gym lockers around King, Snohomish, Pierce, Thurston, and Skagit Counties to steal bank cards.

The suspect admitted using the stolen bank cards as well as stolen keys to break into vehicles and in some cases stealing the victim’s cars. She was booked into the Snohomish County Jail.

Throughout the investigation, Everett Police worked closely with other law enforcement agencies in the area and the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s ID Theft Taskforce.

“The ID Theft Taskforce was created to address the growing problem of Identity Theft in Washington State.
"While the taskforce works to catch and prosecute ID Thieves, it is also important for people to protect themselves,” said Snohomish County Deputy Prosecutor Hal Hupp.
“This means when going to the gym do not store wallets, purses, and keys in unlocked or unsecured lockers.
"It also means not leaving wallets and purses in vehicles.
"While we hear about sophisticated online scams, it is far more common for thieves to simply take advantage of inadequately secured credit cards, debit cards, and checks.”

Shoreline Police: What a mess this burglar made of two Shoreline businesses

Thursday, October 21, 2021

On Friday, 10/15/2021 at 3:22 AM, deputies were dispatched to a burglary in progress in the 17500 block of Aurora Avenue North in Shoreline.

The owner, who was not on site at the time, called 911 to report his live video feed showed a male had forced his way in to the caller's restaurant by shattering the glass front door.

Deputies soon arrived and saw the broken door. In addition to the restaurant, the suspect also broke into the gas station that shares the building with the restaurant. Deputies searched both businesses, but the suspect was gone.

The gas station had damage to the register. Cash, a laptop and vape pens were stolen.

A description of the suspect was developed from the surveillance video.

Almost exactly 24 hours later, on 10/16/2021 at 3:05am, a deputy saw a male walking southbound on Aurora Avenue North from 145th. The male matched the description of the suspect in the restaurant/gas station burglary, right down to the sweatshirt he was wearing.

As the deputy approached him, the male took off and ran into the backyard of a nearby home. The suspect became trapped in the fenced yard and was arrested without incident.

The male was booked into the King County Jail on two separate counts of Burglary in the Second Degree.

Police: Stop thieves from skimming your cash

In one four day period deputies with King County Sheriff's Office investigated three incidents of unknown suspects attaching skimming devices to ATMs located at credit unions in Shoreline and Woodinville.

These devices were so cleverly installed that they were only discovered by persons servicing the machines.

Skimming devices, as these photos show, are nearly impossible to spot. Skimmers, concealed somewhere in the ATM, act like a silent thief and steal the 16-digits of your credit or debit card. A nearby camera or other device captures your PIN. When thieves combine these two pieces of information they have an electronic key to your cash.

We can take steps to protect ourselves.

Be mindful of ATM keypads that appear crooked or poorly installed.

Look for any signs of tampering on the face of the ATM.

Cover your hand when entering your PIN so a remote camera won't capture these digits.

Lastly, consider on-line or mobile banking tools that will alert you to suspicious or fraudulent activity.

Just a few steps can prevent ATM thieves from cleaning you out.

In the early hours of Thursday, October 14, 2021, the glass panels which form the sides of the Interurban Pedestrian Bridges were vandalized.

Almost every one of the panels was hit at least once with a hard object and cracked.

Bridge closure is necessary while we stabilize the damaged glass panels to ensure the safety of pedestrians and drivers on the roadways below. At this time, both Aurora Avenue N and N 155th Street remain open to vehicles and pedestrians.

Police are investigating the incident.

Installed in 2007, the glass panels were designed by artist Vicki Scuri and funded by the City’s 1% for the Arts program.

Shoreline Police: Once. Twice. Three times, you're in handcuffs.

Tuesday, October 12, 2021

He wanted his puffy jacket
On Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 2:39am, we received a call of a possible burglary in progress in the 14500 block of Aurora Ave N in Shoreline.

A bar employee told dispatchers that a male had jumped the fenced patio outside the bar and was now yelling and banging on the back door. Fearing for their safety, she and another employee stayed in the basement until police arrived.

When deputies arrived they located the male, who was immediately detained. The male was intoxicated and uncooperative. When asked for his name, the male refused to give it but added that he had been in the bar earlier and thought he left his coat inside. He described it as a "black puffy jacket."

Deputies asked bar staff if they could check on the man's jacket. An employee soon found the coat and brought it out to the male, who confirmed the jacket was his.

The bar staff told deputies they wanted the male formally trespassed since he was aggressive and had scared the employees. A deputy completed a criminal trespass form and gave the bar a copy.

Here's where it gets good: After explaining the trespass to the male, the deputy asked him to sign it. Of course, he refused, so the deputy gave him a copy of the form anyway and told the man he could not come back to the bar for a year.

The male refused to leave the property, so the deputy explained that he needed to go or be arrested for trespassing. The male again refused to leave and insisted the deputy show him the property lines. The deputy told him he needed to walk to Aurora Ave N to get off the property.

The male, not believing the deputy, refused to walk away. Moments later, after he'd been told three times to leave the property, the man found himself wearing a nice pair of handcuffs.

The male was transported and booked into the SCORE (South Correctional Entity) jail for Criminal Trespass in the First Degree.

As a reminder, we do not show suspects' faces until they have been formally charged.

Shoreline Police: Does texting while driving make you forgetful...cuz.....

Sunday, October 10, 2021

On the evening of Sunday October 3, 2021, at 10:34pm, Shoreline deputies responded to a collision at N 155th St and Aurora Ave N.

Deputies arrived on the scene and observed a black Ford F-150 in the east transit lane of Aurora Ave N. Deputies were also flagged down by a male standing next to his silver 2005 Ford Freestar in a nearby parking lot.

That vehicle had extensive damage to the front bumper and hood.

The male driver of the Freestar told deputies that he had been texting while driving, which caused him to hit the Ford truck. While we appreciated the honesty, there were a few other things he was doing that likely led to the collision.

Maybe he forgot.

As he spoke, deputies noted that the male was slurring his speech. When asked to provide his driver's license and insurance information, the male fumbled through his pockets and produced a credit card.

Deputies observed the male lose his balance as he fumbled through his vehicle before finally producing his license and insurance information.

Despite the strong odor of alcohol, the male denied drinking. He again told deputies that the accident was caused by his texting. Asked if he had consumed any drugs, the male admitted he had smoked marijuana earlier in the day.

The driver declined to take a voluntary Field Sobriety Test. Based on their observations of his impairment, the male was taken into custody for DUI. The male asked deputies to lock up his vehicle. As he did so, one of the deputies noticed a Bud Light concession cup on the vehicle's floorboard. Clue.

Deputies brought the male to the local precinct, where he was processed for DUI. Two independent breath samples showed alcohol levels of .280 and .279, well over three times the legal limit.

The driver, who was previously arrested for a DUI in 2017, was booked into the SCORE (South Correctional Entity) Jail for Driving Under the Influence.

Shoreline Police: Violent assault in store parking lot

Wednesday, October 6, 2021

This is a frightening story that could happen to any one of us. The man pictured here is wanted for assault after a dispute over a parking spot in Shoreline.

On Friday, September 24, 2021 at 2:08pm, a pair of brothers were patiently waiting, with their turn indicator on, for a parking spot at a store in the 1100 block of N 175th St.

Suddenly, a dark-colored (possibly gray) sedan pulled into the parking spot the brothers were waiting on.

One of the brothers threw their hands up in frustration, but moved on to find another parking spot.

Once the brothers were parked, they approached the front of the store and found the suspect waiting for them. The suspect puffed up his chest and arms and began calling the brothers names. One of the brothers attempted to diffuse the situation by saying, “You’re the bigger man. You got the spot.”

This angered the suspect and he shoved one of the brothers to the ground. The suspect began punching the brothers in the face. As a crowd began to form around the men, the suspect then left the store.

Medics responded to treat the brothers' injuries.

If you can identify the man in the photos, please contact our non-emergency number at 206-296-3311, and reference case #C21030234.

Kenmore Police: Shoplifter retaliates against store employee

Tuesday, October 5, 2021

Shoplifter threw a rock through store employee's car window

Shoplifting is one thing, but retaliating against a store employee who asks you to leave?

On Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 6:08am, deputies responded to a supermarket located in the 6800 block of NE Bothell Way in Kenmore.

At 4:00am, store employees witnessed a male come in to the store, grab some food items, and then hide inside the restroom.

After several minutes of coaxing, the male came out of the bathroom, and employees escorted him out of the store. They watched as he seemingly walked away eastbound through the parking lot. The employees did not call police.

When his shift ended at 6:00am, an employee who took part in getting the man to leave the store went out to the parking lot and discovered a broken driver’s side window.

A review of store surveillance footage revealed that after the man was escorted from the store, the suspect walked to the victim's vehicle. He picked up a large rock and threw it through the driver's side window, shattering it.

Deputies checked the vicinity but were unable to locate the suspect. At this time, his identity is unknown.

If you recognize the individual, contact police 24-hour non-emergency number at 206-296-3311 and reference case #C21030752.
