Skandia Midsommarfest June 30, 2024 at St. Edward in Kenmore

Celebrating Midsommar in the Pacific Northwest!
Sunday, June 30, 2024
11am to 6pm
Free Admission

Sign up TODAY to volunteer!

The summer solstice is celebrated by all the Nordic countries, although the celebration may be called by different names, and celebrated in different ways on different days. In Sweden it is called “Midsommar,” so Midsommarfest means Midsommar party or festival.

In Norway, the celebration of the solstice is called Sankt Hans Aften or Jonsok-kveld. In Denmark, the celebration is called Sankthans or Sankthansaften ("St. John's Eve") and in Finland it is called Juhannus.

Midsommarfest, as presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with  raising of a garlanded Midsommar pole, a serpentine dance around the pole, and scores of costumed musicians and dancers - traditions practiced in Sweden for centuries.

Over the years since the 1959 inception of Skandia Midsommarfest, the festival has expanded to include contributions from all the Nordic countries so that the rich cultural diversity of all those lands can be experienced by Skandia Midsommarfest attendees.

Spectators are invited to help hoist the 35-foot (previously 45-foot) pole with their muscles or cheers, and then to join in the rousing långdans (serpentine running dance) around the pole, accompanied by the stirring music of massed musicians. Entertainment, food, crafts activities and good times continue throughout the park grounds.

A special focus of Midsommarfest is the Hemslöjdsmarknad - an avenue of traditional crafts where carefully selected crafts people demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Traditional midsommar food and other Scandinavian delicacies will be offered.

And a flower crown -- the classic midsommarkrans -- ready to decorate to your own taste, will add the finishing touch to your midsommar celebration.

Midsommarfest showcases a wealth of wonderful music and dancing by the Northwest's premier Nordic folk musicians and dancers (and this area boasts some of the best in the Western Hemisphere).

Allspel 2024 led by Ellen Wijsman

Tunes to be played 2x each, in addition to the first, midsommar långdans played longer. After the långdans, start with Ringnessen; end with Stockholmslåten, with probably ~5-6 of the remaining tunes in between. (not in final order)

1. Fjällnäs polska (Midsommarpolskan Långdans, Dalarna Sweden)
2. Ringnesen (Reinlender, Norway)
3. Snar å ta åt (Rørospols, Norway)
4. Stens vals (Waltz, Dalarna,Sweden)
5. Grannas Britta (Slängpolska, Ostergotland Sweden)
6. Schottis från Porjus (Schottis, Lappland Sweden)
7. Fanteladde (Finnskogspols)
8. Laggar fars polska (Polska, Boda Sweden)
9. Båtsman Däck (Polska, Uppland Sweden)

Holiday Farmers Market & Crafts Fair at Third Place Commons this Sunday December 17, 2023

Tuesday, December 12, 2023

This Sunday, December 17 is your last chance in 2023 to shop the bounty of the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market and the ever-popular Holiday Crafts Fair, presented by Third Place Commons.

The special December farmers market will feature many of your favorite regular season vendors and plenty of options for yummy, fresh, and locally grown produce, fish, baked goods, sweet treats, and more. You’re sure to leave with lots of delicious goodies for your upcoming holiday meals.

Over 30 Washington artists and crafters will offer a dizzying array of handcrafted jewelry, home décor, candles, soaps, and holiday novelties. From fine arts to fabric arts and wearables, the phrase “something for everyone” just might have been invented for this occasion!

Before you shop, or while you're on a shopping break, enjoy the Milner Family Fiddles onstage in the Commons from 10:30 to noon. Then downstairs, you'll be serenaded by the classical guitar of Mark Wilson from noon to 2pm.

Once again, the crafts fair will take place in the lower lobby of the Town Center while you’ll find the farmers market and some bonus crafts vendors outside in the regular market location. Both events take place from 10am to 2pm.

SNAP recipients can still spend your SNAP benefits at the LFP Farmers Market and get them matched up to $25! Just stop by the info table inside the Crafts Fair to get your tokens and SNAP Market Match before heading over to the market.

This is also your last chance to use those 2023 Market Bucks, so bring them to the market this weekend and use them this Sunday, December 17th from 10-2. See you at the market!

By Sarah Phillips

This is the season of local craft fairs. Local artists, crafters, painters, potters, jewelers, welders are getting their wares ready to sell at markets.

Shopping close to home this year is worth a try! You can find unique items not available elsewhere, you don’t need to pay shipping costs AND shopping for locally sourced goods has the huge added benefit of not generating delivery truck CO2 emissions.

This turns your purchase into a gift for yourself, your neighbors, and future generations of Earth’s inhabitants by limiting greenhouse gas contributions to the atmosphere where they work as a blanket to heat our climate.

Why shop local?

Fun art showcases and market events support local crafters and artists. By sharing their delightfully creative, unique work with us they directly vitalize our economy.

In addition, shopping local can reduce emissions from air freight and the delivery vehicles. Greenhouse gasses GHG are emitted by all cars and trucks that are fueled with fossil fuels. These Greenhouse gasses can stay in the atmosphere for a century. It is as if the GHG are a blanket surrounding the earth. This results in warmer climate, rising seas and can affect our health and our ecosystem
