Join educator and filmmaker Ben Abel-Bey for a teaser or "snapshot" of his Shoreline Community College Continuing Education course, The African American Experience Through Film, on Wednesday, March 3rd, from 6 - 8pm. 
 
This two-hour Zoom class will examine the counter-narratives of Black filmmakers in the hopes of better understanding how cinema serves as an expression of humanity, and more importantly, a better understanding of the humanity within the African-American community. 

This introductory glimpse into the longer course will include a brief lecture and discussion and is open to the community. Participants will learn how to "read" or break down a scene and explore some essential elements of film theory.

Calling All True Crime Buffs! Explore the Basics of Crime Scene Investigation in online class

Join facilitator Lynne Dean, a retired Latent Fingerprint Examiner with the King County Sheriff’s Office, as she explores how crime scenes are processed for evidence in a new online class offered by Continuing Education at Shoreline Community College.
 
In Fingerprints and Forensics: Understanding the Basics of Crime Scene Investigation, students will learn how a forensic fingerprint laboratory works and discuss photographs from real crime scenes.

You’ll participate in hands-on exercises at home to give you a true “feel” for working with evidence and discover how to distinguish fact from fiction when it comes to your favorite CSI-style TV shows.

Prerequisites: This class is for students 18+, as some of the content and photos are considered graphic. Students will need a 4 inch piece of clear plastic – for example, cut from a sheet protector – and a 4 or 5 inch piece of clear/Scotch Tape to participate in two hands-on exercises.

Travel back to Classic Hollywood in this Shoreline Community College online class

Travel back to Classic Hollywood as you explore the films of Josef von Sternberg in Light and Shadow: The Films of Josef von Sternberg, an online class offered through Continuing Education at Shoreline Community College. 

Revered and reviled in his own time, Sternberg is notable for a series of films in which he directed Marlene Dietrich and is renowned for his lighting, mise en scene, staging, and costume design. 

Sternberg's surviving silent films are remarkable examples of the silent art form, and his gangster film during this period launched the gangster film cycle of the following decade.

Students will view six of Josef von Sternberg's films throughout the class and learn how to evaluate, analyze, and synthesize each film. 

Additionally, students will discuss how the various elements of each film - lighting, camera work, composition, sound, costume, etc. - work together to create meaning and examine cultural influences, including race, ethnicity, and gender roles.

Everyone has jokes and stories waiting to be shared, but finding ways to do so isn’t always easy, especially in the time of social distancing. 

Find your funny bone in Comedy and Storytelling in These Strange Times, an online class offered through Continuing Education at Shoreline Community College this month!

This course will help you uncover these stories and get them out into the world - even when you can't get out at all. 

Sessions will emphasize “punching up,” as opposed to minimizing others, and include a variety of perspectives from seasoned comedians and speakers.
 
This class is taught by Emmett Montgomery, who was voted Seattle Weekly's Best Comedian in 2015, 2017, and 2019 and featured on Last Comic Standing. 

The final session will be an online showcase during which students will deliver material in a fun and supportive environment. Beginners and experienced comedians and storytellers alike are welcome!
