Night construction on N 155th has been extended

Thursday, September 15, 2022

N/NE 155th from Midvale to 15th NE is under construction to repair and overlay pavement

The N 155th Pavement Preservation Project will repair and overlay pavement from Midvale Avenue N to Interstate 5 (I-5) and repair pavement from I-5 to 15th Avenue NE.

Phase 1 construction began the week of August 15, 2022 and is expected to end before late-October.

Night construction has been extended

We anticipate approximately four nights of work in the period beginning Tuesday, September 13 through Monday, September 19, 2022.

Doing this work at night allows us the opportunity to take advantage of the dry weather this week, reducing the risk of project delays and minimizing impacts on Parkwood Elementary’s transportation and operations.

Work will occur between the hours of 7:00pm to 5:00am. We apologize for the disruption and want to thank you for your patience during this time.

County Council approves requirement for electric vehicle charging in new development

Sunday, August 28, 2022

When new development happens in unincorporated King County, much of it will now need to include charging stations for electric vehicles, a nod toward a future shifting away from fossil fuels and toward electric power.

The King County Council recently approved legislation adding requirements for much of new development in unincorporated King County to include charging stations and dedicated parking for electric vehicles.

The legislation pushes toward one of the key goals of the Council’s Strategic Climate Action Plan.

Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles sponsored the legislation along with Councilmembers Reagan Dunn and Rod Dembowski.

“As electric vehicles become more common, affordable, and in-demand, this legislation will ensure that eco-friendly infrastructure exists in King County and that individuals are supported as they transition to more sustainable alternatives.”

Specifically, the legislation would require that new or substantially remodeled apartment buildings make 10% of parking spaces capable of charging electric vehicles (meaning they include all needed equipment to connect and charge) and 25% of spaces EV-ready (meaning the infrastructure is in place to install a charger at some future time).

"The pace of transportation electrification is growing exponentially,” said King County Councilmember Rod Dembowski. “This legislation is essential to build the infrastructure King County needs to lead the nation in decarbonizing our transportation network. As we are now seeing, our planet can't wait."

With a countywide target of having all light-duty vehicles sold by 2035 be electric, charging infrastructure is critical to making EVs accessible to more drivers.

SR 520 across Lake Washington will be closed this weekend

Thursday, August 25, 2022

You didn't really want to travel south this weekend, did you?

The ongoing Revive I-5 work on southbound Interstate 5, means travelers should think twice about their weekend plans.
  • Beginning at 7:30pm Friday, Aug. 26, crews will reduce southbound I-5 to one lane south of the stadiums until 5am Monday, Aug. 29. All traffic will go through the collector-distributor lanes. The eastbound and westbound I-90 ramps to southbound I-5 will remain open.
The big one is the total closure of the 520 bridge over Lake Washington.
  • At 11pm Friday, SR 520 will close around the clock until early Monday morning, Aug. 29.

Part of the SR 520 Montlake Project, the closure is needed to place bridge girders near SR 520 in the Montlake area and shift lanes to create a larger work in between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

There is also ongoing construction in the Montlake neighborhood, where crews are building a new lid over SR 520 and adding new eastbound lanes between the lid and the floating bridge.

Seattle Waterfront construction

Tuesday, June 28, 2022

The viaduct is long gone, the concrete is flowing, and the project to rebuild the Seattle Waterfront is possibly one of the biggest public works projects in Seattle since Pioneer Square was raised.

Waterfront Seattle will rebuild Alaskan Way from S King to Pike streets, and build a new street, known as Elliott Way, from Pike to Bell streets. The new surface street will span a total of 17 blocks from Pioneer Square to Belltown, with two lanes of traffic in either direction for the majority of the street.

The southern section will include dedicated lanes for transit in and out of downtown, as well as lanes for ferry queuing onto Colman Dock. Intersections and sidewalks have been carefully designed to support pedestrian accessibility. The new park promenade and two-way bike path will run along the west side of Alaskan Way.

Progress on restrooms for Einstein and Hillwood Park

Monday, May 23, 2022

New restroom at Hillwood Park. The area is still surrounded with construction fencing.

It has been a long time with no restrooms available for Hillwood Park, but now construction appears close to completion.

During Shoreline School District’s construction of the new Einstein Middle School, the City and School District agreed to a temporary construction easement that allowed for materials storage and construction staging in Hillwood Park. In consideration for the School District’s use of the park, the district agreed to rebuild the park’s restroom facility.

Construction of the new restrooms began on February 22 2022 with demolition of the old structure. The new restroom structure is modular and arrived fully assembled for installation and utility hook up.

Construction was expected to be fully completed by the end of April, but was delayed slightly.

City of Shoreline owns the land and will maintain the restroom, as it’s part of Hillwood park. Shoreline Schools is paying for the restroom itself and its installation, as part of the agreement to use some of their land while Einstein Middle School was being built.

Seattle Waterfront construction slowed by labor union strike

Tuesday, March 1, 2022

Aerial view of Seattle waterfront construction February 2022

Work has slowed on job sites across King County due to a labor union strike by concrete delivery truck drivers from Teamsters Local 174.

This has impacted the availability of concrete and delayed multiple activities.

We support a fair resolution among the parties and remain hopeful that this issue will be resolved soon. Information on our construction schedules and impacts will be regularly updated on this website. We look forward to continuing our progress.

Where did WSDOT get their concrete?

Wednesday, February 2, 2022

Pavement patching on I-5 last summer

By Diane Hettrick

After we published the story about WSDOT replacing concrete panels at various locations on I-5 between Tukwila and Shoreline, damaged last year when extreme heat caused the pavement to expand and crack, readers asked:

Where did they get the concrete?

There is a strike going on, now in its third month, of drivers represented by Teamsters Local 174. Construction projects have been reorganized, rescheduled and put on hold.

Yet WSDOT started this week to replace damaged concrete panels over miles of freeway.

According to Joseph Calabro, WSDOT Northwest Region Communications,

The supplier for this job is Nation’s Mini Mix, which is a mix-on-site concrete operation. They’re unaffected by the strike.

Now you know.

Waterfront Seattle construction update

Friday, November 19, 2021

A portion of the brand new bike facility with new landscaping on both sides.

A heavy cloud (literally) that carried a whole river's worth of downpour hovered over Seattle last weekend.

New southbound lanes, including the transit lane,
looking north on the west side of Alaskan Way S near S Main St.

Through the wind and rain, we are thankful to our team, neighbors and people traveling along the waterfront for their work and patience while we safely completed changes on Alaskan Way over the weekend!

New pedestrian area looking south at the west side of Alaskan Way S near Yesler Way.

It was worth the work as we now have new southbound lanes, including a transit lane, new sidewalks, new crosswalks and a portion of the brand new bike facility on the west side of Alaskan Way open in Pioneer Square.

There will be an increased volume of trucks exiting and leaving campus along with flaggers and signage to assist with traffic control. Noise from an excavator chipping away at the existing buildings is also expected. There will be dust controlling measures in place along with air monitors set up around the site to ensure no particulates leave the construction area.

Lots of freeway closures - but all at night

Friday, June 25, 2021

A detour route is always provided
around Sound Transit construction
If you travel at night, be aware of several highway projects that will close some sections of I-5 for a couple of days.

Work hours are generally 10pm to 4:30am more or less.

The state is resurfacing I-5 under the Revive I-5 project. They did our section of I-5 a couple of years ago.

The mainline in Seattle will be closed south of Freeway Park Friday night through Monday morning. All traffic will use the southbound collector/distributor.

In Mountlake Terrace, Sound Transit is going to work on the rail section that crosses I-5 on its way to Lynnwood.

It will require an overnight closure June 26-27. Anyone traveling southbound will be routed off the freeway at 220th in Mountlake Terrace, to Hwy 99, and east along NE 205th (SR 104) to get back on the freeway.

Contractors will be doing a large concrete pour for the future elevated guideway over I-5. The work being performed will be along the southbound shoulders as well as in the center median of I-5 near the Mountlake Terrace Freeway station.

All the freeway entrances and exits have been closed at night at one time or the other during the Lynnwood Link construction. If you travel late just be prepared for random detours.

Echo Lake Elementary field construction underway

Friday, June 4, 2021

Echo Lake Elementary field construction photo by Steven H. Robinson

Echo Lake Elementary field construction began mid April 2021 with the demolition of the previous field.

The field has been plagued with drainage issues which often made many parts of it unusable. The school district hired an architect and contractor to solve the drainage issues and decided to enlarge the playing area at the same time.

At this point, the new stormwater detention system excavation and installation is complete.

The sod has been excavated at the west end of the field. The subgrade is established and approved by the architect.

The lateral drainage installation and permeable gravel base course are in progress.

The whole field will be resurfaced with artificial turf with a cork infill.

As such they are bringing their stormwater system to city code. This involves putting two large underground retention vaults under their parking lot to manage the stormwater. They will repave the parking lot.

"There will not be any new buildings or additions to the existing building in our current plan."
