Aurora Construction, week of May 10

Tuesday, May 11, 2010

Thanks to Mayor McGlashan for this summary

This week crews will:
  • Continue joint utility trench work that will temporarily close N 182nd Street east of Aurora Monday through Friday during the day. The street will reopen at night.
  • Remove asphalt, excavate the roadway and begin pouring curb on the east side of Aurora between N 165th and N 175th Streets.
  • Install vaults and trench for the joint utility trench on Midvale Avenue, N 175th Street, N 185th Street and Aurora.
  • Continue water line and storm drain work on Aurora between N 165th and N 182nd Streets.
  • Please consider driving up to Aurora when shopping for your goods and services. I am starting to hear that the businesses on or near Aurora are feeling the pinch of the hard economic times exacerbated by the construction. Please do what you can to support our local businesses...

Please be safe in all construction zones. A single yellow line has been painted to divide northbound and southbound traffic near the intersections of N 175th and N 185th Streets. Left turns off of Aurora or onto Aurora that cross this yellow line are not permitted.

Aurora construction update week of April 25

Monday, April 26, 2010

Roadway excavation

Crews will begin grinding and removing asphalt in the work zone area on the east side of Aurora. The roadway will then be excavated down to the final roadway sub-grade level. Asphalt removal and excavation is expected to take about a week and a half, and will be followed by extensive sub-grade preparation work. Temporary crushed rock driveways will be installed to maintain access to businesses during excavation. A small, rolled asphalt curb was temporarily installed along the west edge of the work zone to keep water out of the excavation area. After roadway excavation, crews will begin pouring concrete curbs and bus pads. This work will take several days and may impact access to driveways for a certain period of time. Affected businesses will be notified ahead of time.

Utility installations

Crews will continue installing utility vaults on Aurora , Midvale Avenue, N 182nd Street, and on N 175th Street during the daytime. Water and storm drain work will also continue on Aurora, 175th, and Midvale.

Temporary lane closures on Aurora starting Monday evening

Crews will continue installing water main lines across Aurora at specific locations between N 165th and N 175th Streets. This work will occur at night from Monday through Thursday and will require single lane closures in each direction during construction activity. Traffic will be directed by uniformed police officers and flaggers. All lanes will be reopened by 5:00 a.m.

Potholing on N 175th Street

To prepare for vault and joint utility trench installation on N 175th Street, east of Aurora, crews will “pothole” in the roadway to confirm the location of buried water lines. This work may require intermittent, temporary lane closures on 175th.

Street light base installation

Crews are installing permanent street light bases, or “luminaire” bases, on Aurora between N 165th and N 175th Streets.

Help us keep a safe construction area by:
  • Driving carefully in all construction zones and following the directions of signs and flaggers.
  • Never turning left across a single yellow line when travelling onto or off of various segments of Aurora between N 165th to N 185th Streets. This includes making left-turns when leaving businesses on Aurora.
  • Making left-turns off of Aurora Avenue at signalized intersections at N 165th, N 175th, and N 185th Streets.
  • Adhering to the 35 MPH speed limit enforced throughout the corridor.
  • Using pedestrian crosswalks and avoiding designated work zones.
  • Watching for construction activities near the Interurban Trail.

Please contact the 24-hour hotline at (206) 801-2485 or email aurora@shorelinewa.gov if you feel there is an unsafe situation on the roadway.

Installation of the JUT will affect walkways in the area. Crews will cover open trenches near driveways with steel plates to maintain vehicle access to businesses. Please follow the direction of flaggers.

 Temporary signal work:
Temporary signals have been installed at N 185th Street and Aurora Avenue. Switching power from the old signals to these temporary signals will occur on Thursday night (with police assistance) to maintain safety.

Crews will also work on temporary signals at the intersection of N 175th Street and Midvale Avenue during the daytime. This is not expected to impact traffic.

Temporary lane closures at Midvale Avenue and N 175th Street
Crews will continue drainage work at the intersection of N 175th Street and Midvale Avenue on Monday and Tuesday during the daytime. Drivers should expect temporary lane closures on N 175th Street between approximately 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Driveway delineation
The City of Shoreline continues to work with the contractor to clearly mark driveways to businesses on the corridor. Thank you for your patience.

Stay safe!
Please drive carefully in all construction zones and follow the directions of signs and flaggers. Pedestrians should take extra care between N 165th and N 175th Streets. Drivers are encouraged to take left turns at the signalized intersections at N 165th and N 175th Streets. When leaving businesses, please use caution.

Please contact the 24-hour hotline at (206) 801-2485 or email if you feel there is an unsafe situation on the roadway.

Incidents of vandalism
The contractor has reported a few incidents of vandalism to construction machines and equipment. We need your help in reporting any suspicious activity by calling 911.

Interurban Trail work
Stay tuned for some work on the Interurban Trail near Shoreline City Hall. Pedestrians and cyclists should keep an eye out for flaggers and detours in the next couple weeks.
