Last concert of the year brings overflow crowd to LFP's Animal Acres

Monday, September 11, 2017

Children's performer Tim Noah mesmerized a stage full of children

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Jerry Pickard

An overflow crowd of families parked for blocks around and filled Animal Acres park on Saturday, September 9, 2017 for the Picnic in the Park.

Families happily spilled over into the brand new Eagle Scout Park across the street, where children played on the new playground equipment in a fenced enclosure while adults sat and ate.

At the main event, there were wonderful activities for the children. The City brought in bouncy houses. The Lake Forest Park Youth Council had handouts about their work and flower pot painting for the younger children.

The petting zoo and the City trucks were kid favorites.
Shoreline/LFP Arts Council had a coloring table for the little ones. North City Water District had a bean bag toss - with a water theme, of course!

Tim Noah, who has been a star in kid concerts for three decades, brought his act to the Showmobile stage.

There was a row of food trucks with meals, shaved ice, and donuts. Hawaiian Shaved Ice was popular all day, in spite of cooler outdoor temperatures.

For the adults, LFP Rotary set up a beer garden. LeRoy Bell and His Only Friends provided an adult concert and closed the program a little past four.

The Commanders, a newly-revived ensemble coming from the US Air Force Band of the Golden West, carries on the American musical tradition of the great big bands, yet offers a lot more than the big band sounds. This energetic group of highly-trained professional musicians, formed from 18 Airmen, delivers the full gamut of jazz music - traditional jazz, cool, bop, swing, Broadway favorites, and patriotic music. The Commanders offers an entertaining show you won't soon forget!

A typical evening with The Commanders might include favorites from Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Count Basie, and Dizzy Gillespie to the sounds of today's modern jazz groups delivered by the group's enchantingly talented vocalist. Their renditions of hot jazz feature rousing improvised solos from every instrument in the group. This is an ensemble capable of delivering a truly unique combination of entertainment.

Concert In the Park entertains through the smoke

Friday, August 4, 2017

It was a very hot day

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Jerry Pickard

On Wednesday, August 2, 2017, the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council staged its second concert in LFP's Animal Acres Park.

As always, several hundred people came out for the evening event.

The nice thing about Animal Acres is the tall trees keep the temperature pleasant, even on hot days. People can be in direct sun or in pleasant shade

Even though wildfire smoke was in the air, it didn't seem too bad at ground level, at least not bad enough to keep people away.

The band Lost Dogma played an eclectic mix of Folk, Rock, and Blues - something to please everyone.

The Arts Council, sponsors of the event, handed out information on the rest of the summer concerts and other Arts Council sponsored activities. They also had information about being a member / patron of the Arts Council to support their work.

Aegis Living of Shoreline gave out Watermelon and Strawberry flavored iced water to help people stay hydrated. They have been appearing at events around the area, but on this very hot day they were particularly welcome.

The remainder of the Arts Council summer concerts:

August 9: Different Drummer– Multi-genre Chamber Ensemble. Kruckeberg Botanic Garden, Shoreline

August 16: Champagne Sunday – Raucous Folk. Paramount School Park, Shoreline

August 23: US Air Force Jazz Band – Band of the Golden West’s “The Commanders” Jazz Ensemble. Cromwell Park, Shoreline

Michael Stegner & Friends play Piano Time Finale Concert Wednesday

Saturday, August 24, 2013

Michael Stegner plays in free concernt Aug 28
Straight from the Triple Door to Shoreline, the Michael Stegner and Friends band will be playing in the City Hall courtyard on Wednesday, August 28th at 7:00pm.

It’s the Piano Time 2013 grand finale with Stegner on the Shoreline Rocks grand piano. For this free final “concert in the park” the Stegner Trio will entertain and delight you with a mix of jazz, alt country, pop and the best of Ray Charles. With lots of room for the band and you, they will be sure to play some tunes that will get you up on your feet and dancing.

Michael Stegner’s critically acclaimed debut songwriting album, Fascination Nation, has drawn comparisons to early Tom Waits, Willie Nelson, Randy Newman, David Byrne, Nick Cave, and Leon Russell. This native Kentuckian’s unique storytelling pulls no punches and takes the listener on a beautiful journey through the emotional spectrum.

Growing up in a musical family, Stegner’s first musical influences were his parents’ choral groups, a Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings album, and several old Beach Boys records. This strange bird was always attracted to the genuine rebels in music. Some of his cited influences include Willie Nelson, Miles Davis, Prince, Bjork, Leon Russell, Beck, Trent Reznor, Stravinsky, Bartok, and Alison Krauss.

For years Stegner played keyboards for artists such as Jen Wood, Aiko Shimada, Mike Doughty, Reggie Watts, KJ Sawka, Michael Shrieve, Lee Oskar, John Wicks, and many others. This allowed him to work with many of the best musicians in Seattle.

On August 28th Stegner will be accompanied by two Seattle musical luminaries. Keith Lowe will play the bass. Keith has toured with artists such as Fiona Apple, Zony Mash, Wayne Horvitz and Bill Frisell. Byron Vannoy will play the drums. Byron has performed and recorded with many internationally known musicians such as Julian Priester, Herbie Hancock, Randy Brecker, Jovino Santos-Neto, Tom Scott, Wayne Horvitz, Ron Carter, Ernestine Anderson, Ishmael Wadada, Leo Smith, Vinnie Golia, and Hadley Caliman. More information about the band.

Bring your lawn chairs or a blanket and your family and friends for a lively musical evening to swing out the summer in style. Bring a picnic if you wish and as an added treat Fidalgo Bay Coffee will be available. Wednesday, August 28th 7:00 – 8:20pm at Shoreline City Hall in the courtyard. Inside if necessary.
