Shady park on a hot day - steel drum music
and the kids totally entertained
Did we mention 'free'?

Photo essay by Jerry Pickard

For Shoreline and Lake Forest Park Arts Council's first concert of the year, Ian Dobson's Pan Leggo Caribbean Steel Drums put on a really fun concert. It was a kid magnet as they congregated in front of the stage and hopped and skipped and jumped in time with the music. Ian left the stage several times to teach the children some dance steps and mingle with the crowd.

Ian (in hat) plays marimba with band member.

Ian sings to kids.

A little Steel Drum work.

Ian brings some little drummers onstage.

The children danced throughout the concert.

Next concert is Wednesday, July 18, when All Mixed Up - Songs From the 80's and Beyond plays at the Art Council's and City of Shoreline party in the park at Swingin' Summer Eve, 5:30pm-8:30pm, at Cromwell Park, 180th and Meridian, next to the courthouse. Free party, with a used book sale from the Council of Neighborhood, and barbeque for sale from the Shoreline Fire Department.

Music in the Park to benefit children in Uganda, August 3

Monday, July 9, 2012

Shoreline residents, Dickson Senkunda, a Ugandan native, and his wife, Heather, have a passion for helping children in Uganda.

They founded the non-profit organization, Teach the Children, in 2007, feeling like they needed to do more to give back to children in Dickson’s native country, and get involved in providing children opportunities to become something more than their current circumstances allow. They have been actively involved in the cause ever since.

Most schools in Uganda are over-crowded and under-funded; most do not have sufficient textbooks or books for leisure reading. Only a small percentage of school children have books in their home, and there are many parents who can’t teach their children to read and write because they don’t have the skills themselves.

“I never had a textbook when I went to school in Uganda,” Dickson Senkunda said. “We did not have libraries or books for leisure reading in the schools I attended. Books are so valuable to a young mind in the way they can expand a child’s imagination, open their eyes, and stimulate their minds. Books cause thoughts and ideas that couldn’t have come through other avenues. Learning about people, places, opportunity, and the possibilities of life empowers children to become greater and more involved in their own future than they otherwise would have been. With poverty all around them, that is all the children come to know. Books open up a whole new world that they have never known existed.”

Over the past few years they have sent more than 5,000 pounds of donated books to schools in rural areas of Uganda, establishing libraries in fifteen schools. Other projects have included building bookshelves, creating reading groups, and providing community training on education, literacy, and health/hygiene.

“With books come opportunities to learn, grow intellectually, and become something great,” Senkunda said. “It allows for further education and entrepreneurship, which stimulates the country’s economy and helps to end cycles of poverty that have existed for generations.”

“It is only through fundraising and the kindness and generosity of others that this is possible,” Dickson said. “Teach the Children couldn’t do this on its own.”

Teach the Children plans to make another shipment of books to schools in Uganda in early Fall. The organization hopes that its projects will help increase the literacy rate in Uganda, which is currently 68 percent, and a result, increase the opportunities available to the children there.

Part of the organization’s fundraising efforts this year includes a night of Music in the Park on Friday, August 3rd from 5:30pm-8:30pm at Cromwell Park in Shoreline. 18030 Meridian Ave N, next to the Courthouse.

“Ry”, a local Hawaiian reggae musician, will be performing, as well as a local dance group. There will be live music, food, prizes, and fun for the whole family; so bring your blankets and lawn chairs, and enjoy an evening in the park! There is a suggested donation of $15 to attend.

Proceeds go to Teach the Children, to help further their mission of helping children in Uganda. For information about Teach the Children, and how you can get involved, visit their website or contact Heather Senkunda at 801-671-6944.

Soulful Sounds of Christmas XXIII new location, new group

Sunday, December 4, 2011

Nichol Venee Eskridge, soloist
The Soulful Sounds of Christmas concert enters year twenty-three in a new location and with a new group.

Long time holiday concert the “Soulful Sounds of Christmas” has been a main stay on the campus of Shoreline Community College, will be moving, but not far. The concert will be held this year in the main dining room of the Pub, and not the Little Theater as in years past. Pat Wright and the Total Experience Gospel Choir will not be performing this year.

However, one of Seattle’s gospel music pioneer’s Cora Jackson and the Judah Song Choir will be joining this year’s concert, along with soloist Nichol Venee’ Eskridge on December 19, 2011 at 7:30pm.

Jackson’s music has spanned more than 30 years. She is the owner of Sonojack Records, she has composed over 150 songs and three dramatic musicals. She has performed with many great gospel musicians and toured with several choirs as a vocalist and music director. She has made numerous appearances: Sankofa Maafa, Port Townsend Blues and Jazz Festivals, televised Black History Month programs, Children’s Defense Fund National Conference, Black Dollar Days banquet with Dick Gregory, singing of the national anthem for the Seattle Super Sonics ball games, radio and television appearances and countless other special programs.

She founded Judah Song, a multi-racial and multi-denominational community based choir which ministers at drug and recovery centers, prisons, fellow churches and in concert throughout the year.

Eskridge is back for her twenty-third year of Soulful Sounds of Christmas. She is a seasoned gospel music talent with performances at local churches, schools, malls and special events including “Keepers of the Dream,” “Black Nativity,” and Duke Ellington Sacred Music Concert,” with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. She has been featured on several recording projects, and has four solo CD projects of her own.

New this year as well is an outreach to needy families; we will be working with local partners to support several families with turkey baskets, toys and will be serving hors d’oeuvres. The “Soulful Sounds of Christmas XXIII” is an evening of spirit-filled music that will start your holiday season on a high note! Tickets range from $15-$20 and can be purchased by calling 206-234-7859.

Fall concerts at Prince of Peace in December

Saturday, November 12, 2011

By Londa Jacques

Prince of Peace and many other local area churches host a concert series throughout the year. Churches typically have tremendous acoustics, and fine musicians and instruments, and are happy to share them with the community.

These concerts are one of Shoreline’s best kept secrets, are open to the public, and are often under-publicized and under-attended. Many are performed by voices and musicians you’d pay to see at the Symphony or the Opera.

So, if you are a music lover who is on a limited budget, do check out the local church near you and take advantage of some wonderful concert opportunities such as these offered at Prince of Peace later this fall:

• Sunday, December 4, 2011 at 4:00 pm
Prince of Peace Choir along with several guest singers and soloists, present The Messiah. This year’s Hallelujah Chorus finale will be a sing-along. Freewill offering.

• Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 7:00 pm
Cascadian Chorale presents Cascadian Carols, including carols by local composers Bern Herbolsheimer, Linda Gingrich, David Hahn, and Chris Fraley. Music of Gustav Holst, Zoltán Kodály, Norman Luboff, Wiliam Averitt, and P.D.Q. Bach rounds out an evening of Christmas splendor and joy.

Tickets available through Cascadian Chorale website.

Massy Ferguson at Animal Acres Park July 6, 7 pm

Tuesday, July 5, 2011

Massy Ferguson
Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council and Aljoya Present:
The 2011 Summer of Fun Concerts in the Park Series
Featuring: Massy Ferguson
Wednesday, July 6, 7p.m.
Animal Acres Park in Lake Forest Park

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council invites you to celebrate the arrival of summer as we present Massy Ferguson on July 6 at 7 p.m. at Animal Acres Park in Lake Forest Park.

This is the first official park concert of our 2011 Summer of Fun Concerts in the Park Series. Massy Ferguson is one of the rising stars of the Seattle music scene, playing major festivals like Bumbershoot, and touring extensively. Their sound is eclectic, a bit dark, thoughtful and fun. Grab some friends and a picnic and come on down to this exciting, family friendly show. Rain or shine, the entertainment will be fine!

More on Massy Ferguson:
Also known as "the People's Band," this roots Americana quartet combines steady, blue-collar alt-country with Southern rock and an everyman ethos that has helped it land gigs all over the world. -- Shawn Telford, Seattle PI

Singer-bassist Ethan Anderson says Massy Ferguson’s sound is Americana that leans more toward rock than country, and that's a pretty good description. Think Drive-By Truckers or some combination of Son Volt and The Hold Steady. Think Springsteen's "Greetings From Asbury Park" or "Nebraska." Those are all influences, as is 1970s Southern rock and good-time classic rock bands like Thin Lizzy.
If that means Massy Ferguson is derivative, well, that's partly true. It doesn't really matter, though, because the songs, if not particularly groundbreaking, are just plain good.

Animal Acres Park is located at NE 178th St. and Brookside Blvd in Lake Forest Park. Information about these and other Arts Council events and programs is available here or by calling the SLFPAC at 206-417-4645.
