VW Car show is a crowd pleaser

Sunday, July 16, 2023

VW Beetles all in a row.
The Cascade Kombis Vintage Volkswagen Club hosted Saturday's VW car show on the Shoreline Community College campus.

Vehicles have been lovingly restored to a condition better than the original
On Saturday, July 15, a large crowd enjoyed checking out the premiere vintage VW show in the Pacific Northwest!

More than one owner picked up their van in Germany and traveled Europe
or bought their van in the U.S. and followed the Grateful Dead around the country
This event has been staged for 40 years, primarily at the College by the Cascade Kombis vintage VW club, a non-profit organization.

Waitresses on roller skates brought your order to your car
Visitors enjoyed the cool vintage cars, campers and busses, picked up gear at the swap, and won some amazing prizes for $1!

$1 tickets paid off in big prizes

The show concluded with the awards presentation and grand prize raffle. Read the full show details here.

*Original info in the caption was not quite correct. Here's the info: Older VWs didn't have a fuel gauge, only a fuel petcock. If you were low on fuel ( = engine cutting out) you had to switch the petcock to the 'reserve' position, while you were driving. The lever was located below the dashboard.

Story and Photos By Doug Cerretti

The Starr Sutherland, Jr Post 227 of The American Legion celebrated the beginning of summer with a BBQ Saturday June 24, 2023, attended by veterans, the Auxiliary, family, friends and the community.

Under the direction of US Army veteran Shirley Lovelace, a very appealing BBQ lunch was prepared with the help of master griller Steve Seng, US Marines, Patty Cornelius and John Biladeau, American Red Cross.

The lunch consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs and brats with side dishes of baked beans, pasta and potato salads, corn on the cob and watermelon.

As part of the summer celebration our resident karate school, the Shoreline Karate Club, presented a demonstration of karate.

Under the direction of Sensei John Gough, members showed us individual karate moves with the advanced members putting all of these individual moves together in one fluid and precise movement.

The Shoreline Karate Club meets at Post 227 Monday to Thursday and Saturday. For more information about the karate club, go to shorelinekarateclub.org

Post Commander Charles Grenard said, “We were fortunate to be greeted with perfect weather and it was our pleasure to host the Shoreline Karate Club.”

SnoKing Retirees group heard from Shoreline astronaut at their May luncheon

Friday, June 16, 2023

Barb Bumgardner is giving a “Certificate of Appreciation” to Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, after her presentation. Dottie delivered a stimulating review of her journey to become an astronaut at the SnoKing School Retirees Luncheon on May 18, 2023.

By Barb Bumgardner, Chair or the SKSR May luncheon

The SnoKing School Retirees (SKSR) group is composed of retired teachers and other school professionals from multiple north King and south Snohomish school districts.

It was great to see lots of those folks at our SnoKing School Retirees May luncheon on May 18, 2023 which was held at the Shoreline Center, a new location for SKSR.

We were honored to be joined by two of our local school superintendents, Dr Susana Reyes from Shoreline, and Dr. Rebecca Miner from Edmonds, who also taught with our speaker in Vancouver, Washington, several years ago.

Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger is in the Discovery Space Shuttle as she is on her way to the IIS (International Space Station), April, 2010. Dottie had always dreamed of becoming an astronaut.

But the most “out of this world” experience was the presentation by Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, a former NASA astronaut!

I met Dottie when she lived across the street from me for several years. My neighborhood was quite excited when we learned that with the family who just moved in, the mom was a former astronaut!

Jason, Dottie’s husband, teaches in the Northshore School District, and their daughter, Bria, is a sophomore at Shorecrest High School in Shoreline. Dottie and her family all love enjoying outdoor adventures.

As educators, we often check in with our students to inquire about their plans for the future. At the age of 9, Dottie made a paper mache model of an astronaut when her teacher asked what she wanted to become.

In her presentation, Dottie reminded us that dreams don’t just “happen.” She went on to share with us the many steps she took along the way to her launching into space as an astronaut.

Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger is in charge of monitoring checklists while two of her crew are outside of the Space Shuttle. She went through several years of training in order to safely fulfill her responsibilities.

Her parents sent her to Space Camp when she was 15, and when she returned, she built a model of the Space Shuttle Discovery, as it was launching with the Hubble Telescope that very year. After college at Whitman in Walla Walla, Dottie was quite interested in science and math. She got her teaching degree, and went on to teach earth science at a junior high in Vancouver, WA.

One of her students asked her one day to explain how astronauts use the bathroom in space. She admitted that she had no idea, and went onto the NASA website to find the answer. While on the NASA website she noticed that NASA was hiring teachers to become astronauts. After being accepted, she then went through over two years of training.

On April 5, 2010, exactly 20 years after she built the model of Discovery, Dottie was launched into space along with her crew of seven, on the Space Shuttle Discovery, on their way to the ISS (International Space Station).

Dottie included many striking photos in her presentation, which were projected on a huge screen for us to enjoy them.

If you are interested in learning more about our speaker, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, you can find many interesting sites online. One in particular that I enjoyed was on the Seattle TEDx website that includes a 15-minute Ted talk entitled "Dream Boldly"

Tuesday, June 13, 2023

On June 2, 2023, members of Moms Demand Action and other #WearOrange activists lined the 145th overpass to shine a light on the gun violence that takes the lives of 43,000 people and devastates countless others in the U.S. every single year.

They waved signs and orange sticks at cars on I-5 and on 145th.

The signs called attention to the toll on young lives. Gun violence is one of the top causes of children's deaths in the United States.

Moms Demand Action (for gun sense in America) members from Shoreline and Edmonds all wore orange.

"Like our nation’s gun violence crisis, orange is a color that can’t be ignored."

While continuing work within existing committees such as voter services and healthcare, they will also focus on two new areas: Tree Canopy and Preserving Legacy Forests, and Statewide Redistricting Reform.

Guest speaker Brel Froebe from Center for Responsible Forestry educated members on mature forests to help explain some of the issues surrounding this new advocacy work. More information about our current programs can be found at: www.lwvsnoho.org

A strong slate of nominees was elected to the board of directors for the 2023-24 year, and the outgoing members were thanked for their volunteer service.

The Annual Meeting was also a chance to recognize the Legends of the League, who are esteemed League members recognized for their long, significant, and influential service to the League and the community.

Shorewood seniors receive scholarships from Alpha Delta Kappa

Saturday, May 6, 2023

Kaylee Logan and Marin Cady

Marin Cady and Kaylee Logan, both seniors at Shorewood High School, were recently selected by Washington Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa to receive a scholarship for a future educator.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an international organization of women educators who support in education, families and communities, and world understanding.

This $1,000 scholarship is awarded by the Washington Alpha Delta Chapter to a graduating senior who has demonstrated high academic performance, involvement in activities and community service, and a true desire to work with children. Since 2005, Alpha Delta, established in Shoreline in 1963, has awarded 29 scholarships to local students.

Marin Cady, the daughter of Jonathan and Karis Cady, is an engaging and well-rounded individual.

With a perfect gpa in a rigorous program that includes many AP, Honors, and UW courses, and on the Dean’s List of Distinction and an AP Scholar of Distinction, Marin is definitely academically prepared.

She also shows accomplishment in the fields of music and sports by playing the violin In the Shorewood Symphony Orchestra and playing softball for SW and clubs.

Marin knew she wanted to be a teacher from an early age and has displayed her interest in working with children by tutoring elementary through high school in a wide range of subjects and situations, participating in Link to help incoming freshmen integrate to high school, and providing childcare for young children through fifth grade at her church.

Although she is still open to subjects and levels, Marin is drawn to the middle school age where students are discovering themselves. She has always been passionate about history and would love to engage students in its importance in social justice and solving today’s problems.

Marin plans to attend Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon.

The scholarship winners and their parents:
Becky Logan, Josh Logan, Kaylee Logan, Marin Cady, Karis Cady, Jonathan Cady

Kaylee Logan is the daughter of Josh and Becky Logan

An outstanding student with an impressive list of AP, Honors, and UW courses on her transcript, Kaylee is also adventurous and willing to explore both academically and with her activities.

She has developed many worthwhile skills while doing everything from Auto Tech and Robotics to swim team to manager of the front of the house for SW drama.

Her exploration into working with children and animals started her on the path to a career in education.

Kaylee first volunteered as a day camp counselor at Sammamish Animal Sanctuary and then an overnight camp counselor at Tall Timber Ranch. Kaylee is now involved in PALS Club at Shorewood, where she works as an assistant and peer leader to students with disabilities.

This led her to volunteer as an adaptive riding teacher at Scooter’s Place. Kaylee is looking forward to becoming an elementary school special education teacher.

She plans to attend the University of Vermont.
