Saturday, February 4, 2023

For the third year in a row, the Sno-King School Retirees association donated $500 to The Works, the Shoreline PTA Council clothing room.

The Association has donated annually to three organizations, located in the three school districts where their members taught.

Besides The Works, they also donate $500 to the Northshore Foundation for their Homeless Student Services and to the Washington Kids in Transition which serves the Edmonds School District.

All three organizations benefit the children in each school district.

Washington Kids in Transition benefits homeless students.

The SnoKing School Retirees also do a service project. "When we started out we helped to buy snack items for Washington Kids that they received on their school bus when being delivered to the place they were staying," said Board Member Jim Siscel.
"Then we did a service project on a Saturday stuffing the snack bags. This snack bag project is not happening now after Covid. So this year the money will be used to purchase summer time art supplies. We will put the supplies together on a Saturday in April."

The $500 comes from their membership dues, donations at meetings and individual members.

Why do people play Bridge? Come find out

Tuesday, December 27, 2022

Tens of thousands of people spend hundreds of hours each year playing bridge. What's so great about the game?

Seattle Bridge Center is offering a limited series of drop-in bridge sessions on Monday evenings in early 2023.

This series is appropriate for adults, and for middle-school and high-school students accompanied by adult family members.

Bridge players, bridge prodigals, and the bridge-curious are all welcome.

If you're not a bridge player yet, we'll play stepping-stone games that introduce bridge concepts.

If you're a non-competitive bridge player, or you're returning to the game after some time away, we'll get you started with modern duplicate bridge.

If you're already playing duplicate bridge, this is a chance to get some supervised play, with hand records at the end of the evening.

  • Dates: Monday evenings in January (2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th). February dates will be scheduled toward the end of January.
  • Times: 7pm to 9pm
  • Location: Seattle Bridge Center, 1539 NE 145th St, Seattle (shared parking lot with Dollar Tree)
  • Cost: $5 per person per session, please bring cash. Youngsters up to age 18 are free.
  • Ages: Adults; plus middle-school and high-school students accompanied by adult family members.
  • Food: Light snacks provided, along with coffee, tea, and water.

Your host is David Dailey, who teaches beginner lesson series at Seattle Bridge Center. The next regular series of beginner lessons will start in late April or early May.

  • Get donated books out of our storage area and into the community where they can be read and enjoyed
  • Attract new members to the Friends
  • Have fun while doing all of this – as we share our love for books – and are happy to see other folks delighting in them as well.

  • Friday December 9: Set –up beginning at 10am. For the set-up we welcome members with strong arms and backs to help with hauling tables and books beginning at 10 am and the rest of us to help with sorting and arranging books on the tables and carts after that.

Payment can be made by cash, check, or credit or debit card (with chip). Treasurer John Brew will coordinate this aspect of the sale.

Unsold books and media: Depending on how many and what they are we may choose to keep some, share some with our partners Kenmore and Shoreline, send some to Goodwill or otherwise try to keep them circulating in the community.

The library is located off the lobby in the lower level of Town Center Lake Forest Park (behind the escalator). Town Center is at the intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Join the LFP in Action Book Club

Saturday, November 19, 2022

The LFP in Action book club at Third Place Books is a place to have deep conversations about climate, solutions and resilience.

To kick off this book club we will spend several months discussing the anthology "All We Can Save". The book is available at Third Place Books with a 20% discount.

“This astounding and ambitious eco-anthology is filled with whip-smart essays, heart-wrenching poems, and stunning visual art from an all-female cast … those who’ve been left out of the climate debate for too long … a powerful chorus of women armed with solutions for our changing climate.”
— Self

We begin our journey Wednesday November 30, 2022 from 6pm – 7:15pm, in person at Third Place Books. Upper level of Town Center at the intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Everyone is welcome. We will build connections to each other, and an understanding of the climate movement as seen through the eyes of the female voices represented in this anthology.

What to read for our first meeting
  • Adrienne Rich Poem (on the page before the table of contents)
  • Begin (the editor's notes)
  • Calling In by Bastida
  • A Handful of Dust by Kate Marvel

These short and provocative pieces are our first reading. If you are interested and haven’t quite had time to finish the reading you are welcome.

For more information, including where to meet, contact Mimi miriam.bertram@gmail.com or Sarah tanjatogether@gmail.com
