Op-Ed: NUHSA strongly encourages a YES vote on Shoreline's Prop 1

OP-ED
From Heidi Shepherd, Board President NUHSA

Ballots have been mailed, and Shoreline voters now must vote on Prop. 1, the maintenance and operations levy for public safety and community services. The North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA) strongly encourages a YES vote!

The pandemic has had severe consequences for many in our community, and families are still struggling. From mental and physical health challenges to food scarcity and a lack of stable housing, residents have relied on the critical support Shoreline has provided during the pandemic and the infrastructure that the City has carefully built in partnership with area providers and agencies.

State law limits an increase in tax revenue unless authorized by a vote of the people, and because funding for basic City services (including that of human services) has not kept pace with rising costs, approval of Prop. 1 is essential to simply maintain current services.

This includes critical community services funding for seniors, youth, and families in need, along with homelessness response services and staffing for the successful RADAR program that provides mental health professionals with police to assist community members in behavioral health crises.

If the proposed levy replacement does not pass, the City will be forced to reduce or eliminate services to balance the City’s budget, as required by law - and first on the chopping block will be those programs the City is not legally required to provide.

At risk is support for human services, such as the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center, the Teen Center and programs for children and young families, in addition to neighborhood services, community events, homelessness outreach, communications, parks maintenance, recreation programs, and cultural programming.

Renewing the levy is absolutely critical for maintaining the health and human services residents expect and ensuring a strong and vibrant community for everyone. Vote YES on Prop. 1!

Pink Polka Dots (PPD) Junior Guild celebrates reaching $1 million fundraising goal

Saturday, October 22, 2022

Pink Polka Dots Founding members with Dr. Olson
On September 24, 2022 the Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild (PPD) of Seattle Children’s Hospital, celebrated reaching a milestone at their “Thanks a Million” dinner and dance, featuring music by Lago Vista Social Club.

PPD founders Kelsey Josund (center) and Maddy Berkman (L center) are joined by current PPD co-Presidents and past PPD Presidents on stage

Many founding and former members joined current PPD’s and community supporters at the Lake Forest Park Civic Club for this memorable evening during which they surpassed their long time goal of raising $1 million dollars to fund groundbreaking research for better treatments, and hopefully someday a cure, for pediatric brain tumors.

Current PPDs joined the founders on stage at their event

Founded in 2006 by local 6th graders in memory of their friend, Sydney Coxon, the Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild fundraising proceeds support the work of Dr. Jim Olson and his team of researchers towards developing exciting new treatment methods including “tumor paint” which makes cancer cells glow for easier surgical removal.

Tumor Paint (or Tozuleristide), is currently in the final human clinical trial that could lead to FDA registration.

Some of the current PPD Junior Guild members on the Civic Club dock before the event.

The current generation of PPDs include students in 5th-11th grade and they are always eager for more young people to join. You could find members selling handmade cards and gifts at the LFP Farmers Markets or selling lemonade along the Burke Gilman trail this summer.

You can also find them at upcoming events like the Shoreline Senior Center Holiday Bazaar and the LFP Holiday Craft Fair.

In 1976, the League sponsored the first televised presidential debates, winning an Emmy award for Outstanding Achievement in Broadcast Journalism.

We sponsored televised Presidential debates throughout the 80’s, focusing on nonpartisan issues with a main goal of informing voters.

The LWVSC has been upholding that tradition right here in Snohomish County by sponsoring debates and forums for local and state offices. Since our organization neither supports nor opposes candidates or political parties, we can provide a thoughtful environment that allows voters to make their own informed choices.

Alpha Delta professional organization inducts new members

Tuesday, September 6, 2022

Caroline Mann and Susana Reyes inducted into Alpha Delta Kappa
professional organization empowering women educators
Alpha Delta Kappa (A∆K) is a professional organization created to empower women educators. It was founded in Kansas City, Missouri by women who thought women educators were receiving little recognition and had few administrative opportunities.

One of our chapter members, Geralyn Shreve, who worked for NASA, told her principal that she would like to become a principal. He patted her on the head (!) and asked her why she would want to do that. Times have changed, but the need for an organization to aid women educators has not diminished. A∆K offers enrichment, both personally and professionally.

In more recent times, A∆K has also turned its energy toward altruistic opportunities. Alpha Delta is an A∆K chapter and supports schools in Shoreline, Edmonds and Mukilteo districts with school supplies, money for scholarships and student fees, as well as donations to charitable agencies such as Mary’s Place, Hang Time (YMCA), and Children’s Hospital.

This past school year Alpha Delta inducted two new members, Caroline Mann and Susana Reyes, as exemplary women educators.

Caroline Mann became a member of Alpha Delta in 2021. Caroline graduated from the University of Washington in 1997 with a BS in microbiology, and earned her Masters in Teaching from Seattle U in 2001. She has been a National Board certified teacher since 2005. Beginning her teaching career at Kellogg Middle School in 2001, she moved to Einstein Middle School in 2003 as a science teacher. She transferred to Shorewood High School in 2006, and has been teaching there ever since. Bonus information for teachers: Caroline read over 100 books in 2021!

Susana Reyes also became a member of Alpha Delta, in 2022. Susana is the Superintendent of Shoreline Schools, and brings a wealth of educational experience to Alpha Delta. She worked initially for Wapato schools as a bilingual teacher, Assistant Principal, and Principal, then moved to Pullman Schools to serve as Assistant Superintendent. She has also served as Assistant Superintendent in the Mead and Pasco School Districts.

Susana Reyes says, “I am honored to be a member of A∆K. I appreciate and am so grateful for the way in which A∆K recognizes the contributions of educators as well as how the organization supports our communities’ students and schools.
"Thank you for the nomination and for the opportunity to become a member of A∆K. I look forward to engaging and contributing to the organization’s work.”

Pat Valle is Alpha Delta’s chapter president and co-chair of A∆K’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
“As a teachers’ organization, Alpha Delta is more than the title “sorority” might suggest. It is an altruistic organization of exemplary teachers from Shoreline, Edmonds, and Mukilteo school districts, whose aim is to nurture relationships, create networking opportunities and support diversity, equity and inclusion.”

Kevin Auld and the NWJPB
From Kevin Auld
Northwest Junior Pipe Band

What a fun day! The band had a great time competing at the North Berwick Highland Games in Scotland. No prizes for us today, but everybody had a blast.

We got to explore the beautiful seaside village of N Berwick and listen to some incredible pipe bands from Scotland, Australia, Canada and the USA.

Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming - especially the mayor N Berwick!

Tomorrow we're off to the Bridge of Allan games for more fun and music

About Northwest Junior Pipe Band

Northwest Junior Pipe Band is a Scottish bagpipe and drum band that provides world-class musical and leadership experience for youth (Ages 8-18) in the Pacific Northwest welcoming all in the pursuit of learning and performing the Celtic musical arts.

Tartan and Uniform
The band wears MacKenzie tartan kilts and a traditional ‘civilian’ style pipe band uniform. We are not associated with the MacKenzie clan, but take pride in our tartan’s association with the Highland Light Infantry, of which our founder Charlie McNeill was a member. More about the band’s history here.

Kevin and NWJPB have strong ties to Shoreline.
