Saturday, July 9, 2022

Scott Wands
By Robin Roat

The Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park thanked Ed Sterner for leading LFP Rotary through a challenging year.

Despite meeting only on Zoom, five new members came on board to continue SERVICE ABOVE SELF in our community.

President Scott Wands will preside over the new rotary year beginning July 1, 2022.

The annual Changing of the Guard dinner was held at the LFP Civic Club on June 30, 2022.

(The event is alternately known as the LFP Comedy Hour as papers and folders went flying, not once, not twice, but . . . and Board Members scrambled to rescue the order.)

With a western theme - yeehah!! - Eldon and Heather Gorke of Acorn Catering provided a delicious barbecued chicken and pulled pork meal with all the trimmings.

So glad to see all our new members in attendance - Maddy Larson, Terry Smith, Jill Brady, Dennis Day, and Kennis Brady - Welcome!

Alan Merry, JP Mahar, and Ed Sterner
Outgoing President Ed Sterner gave awards to our club officers in recognition for excellent service throughout the 2021-2022 year.

A well-deserved standing ovation erupted as JP Mahar received the Rotarian of the Year award.

Past District Governor Alan Merry saluted the service of Carol Dahl and Mark Phillips, and others not present.

As the baton was passed, incoming-President Scott Wands introduced his new slate of officers.

Two men who exemplify service above self: a big thanks to Past President Ed Sterner, and a big welcome to our 2022-2023 President Scott Wands!! Thank you!!

Please consider joining our vibrant LFP ROTARY CLUB in the quest to serve our community and beyond.

AG Ferguson: Sorority must provide more than $500k in relief for housing fees it unlawfully charged UW students

Friday, July 8, 2022

Alpha Omicron Pi - UW
OLYMPIA — Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced this week that Alpha Omicron Pi, a national sorority, must refund or waive the housing fees it unlawfully charged dozens of University of Washington students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The sorority charged thousands of dollars in housing fees in 2020 and 2021, even though COVID-19 prevented the students from accessing sorority housing — a violation of Gov. Jay Inslee’s emergency eviction moratorium.

The Attorney General’s Office learned of the case after 13 UW students complained to Ferguson’s COVID-19 eviction moratorium enforcement team.

In a declaration in support of Ferguson’s case, one student wrote, “It did not feel fair that I would be required to pay for the bills of the chapter house when I could not live there… At the time, I lived paycheck to paycheck and worked part-time jobs on top of my classes. I was not the only person in a tight financial situation. I knew other sisters who lost their retail jobs during the pandemic as well. But whenever we raised these health and financial concerns with our alumni advisors, we were told to focus on ‘sisterhood.’”

Under the consent decree, a legally enforceable document filed in King County Superior Court, the sorority must refund and/or waive the unlawful housing fees. The sorority must notify the students within 30 days that they no longer owe the sorority the unlawful housing fees charged during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Alpha Omicron Pi charged at least 68 students the unlawful housing fees. If a student paid any amount of the unlawful charges, they will receive full reimbursement. The Attorney General’s Office will contact eligible students about their reimbursements. Students will receive full reimbursements and/or waivers for any unlawful housing fees the sorority assessed against them from spring quarter 2020 through the 2021 school year — a total of more than $500,000 in relief.

The Attorney General’s Office will distribute the refunds as soon as possible after reviewing the sorority’s invoices. If you were charged unlawful housing fees and have questions about the reimbursement process, please email the Attorney General’s Office Civil Rights Division at AOIISettlement@atg.wa.gov

“This sorority took advantage of students, charging them thousands of dollars for housing they could not access or use,” Ferguson said. “Alpha Omicron Pi’s actions were clear violations of the protections put in place to protect Washingtonians from the spread of COVID-19. Thanks to the students who spoke up and brought this to our attention, the sorority must cancel or refund these unlawful fees.”

Op-Ed: LWV Snohomish County: Curbing Gun Violence: DO SOMETHING

Wednesday, June 8, 2022

The non-partisan National League of Women Voters has supported measures to increase public and school safety and decrease gun violence since 1999. The League believes that “the proliferation of handguns and semiautomatic weapons in the United States is a major health and safety threat to its citizens.” (www.lwv.org)

Data from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA, note on their Firearms Violence page

“Firearm injuries are a serious public health problem. In 2020, there were 45,222 firearm-related deaths in the United States – that’s about 124 people dying of gun injuries daily."

Incidents include parents and siblings accidentally shot by children who obtain loaded weapons and school friends shot intentionally by angry children, as happened on October 14, 2014 in Marysville, Washington, just north of Everett. This does not include victims permanently injured and emotionally traumatized or their families and communities.

Regulating who obtains a gun and who can use a gun need not infringe upon any Constitutional rights for adults who use rifles and guns for sports. As many have observed, we require car and truck owners to meet certain criteria for operating motor vehicles. There are ways to support owners of legally-obtained weapons while protecting churches, schools, hospitals and all public spaces.

The League supports:
  • Requiring universal background checks
  • Closing the gun show loophole in the current laws
  • Banning assault weapons and placing limits on high-capacity ammunition magazine sizes
  • Increasing penalties for “straw” (fake buyer) purchases of guns
  • Funding research and reporting on gun violence in America
Such regulation would keep guns in the hands of responsible adult enthusiasts and out of the hands of those who would murder innocent people.

Let’s move from “thoughts and prayers” to action.

It is long past time to enact comprehensive gun safety reform that protects our children, schools, and communities. Contact your Senators and let them know that you support common sense gun reform legislation and want action taken NOW. You can easily contact them through this action alert from the LWVUS.

The Texas LWV President, Grace Chimene, noted in her May 25 remarks that
“Gun violence is not partisan. …. let your candidates know that gun violence prevention is important to you and that all lives, especially children’s, are just as important as the Second Amendment.”

Rainbow for Girls hosting Family Bingo in Shoreline Saturday to support Page Ahead Literacy

Monday, May 16, 2022

Hello There! My name is Sierra and I am a member of an awesome organization, Rainbow for Girls! Think of it as a junior sorority or leadership club for girls 11-20 years old.

It has helped build my confidence, provide service to my community and meet some lifelong friends. In addition I've gained leadership skills, public speaking, and event planning skills. I’ve been a member since I was 12 and now I’ve advanced to being a state officer this year.

Every year the State President chooses a service project the jurisdiction (of Washington and Idaho) raises money for throughout the year. This year it's Page Ahead Literacy Program

It’s an organization based in Seattle that provides books and learning resources to underprivileged/under-resourced children across the state. Since 1990, they’ve provided more than 3.5 Million books and have helped more than 950,000 kids.

I am hosting a Bingo Fundraiser with one of my state officer friends this Saturday, May 21st at 1pm at the Shoreline Masonic Center 753 N 185th St, Shoreline, WA 98133.

There will be a silent auction and concessions available - you won’t wanna miss out!

The theme is Seasons, so come dressed in the attire of your favorite season.

Admission is $10 which includes a game board, and for additional family members it’s only $5 each. All proceeds go to Page Ahead Literacy Program!

It will be great fun for the whole family. I would love to see you there!

Seattle Labor Chorus fundraising concert May 7, 2022

Tuesday, April 19, 2022

In the glorious, centuries-old tradition of labor movement music, the Seattle Labor Chorus offers an evening concert with inspirational stories of workers struggling for power to bring about social, economic, racial, and environmental justice.

Register to join this live-streamed event and make a financial contribution to keep the Labor Chorus on the move! If public health conditions allow, we will have room for a small live audience. Seating will be limited.

We have a goal of $17k this year and we are already at $5,000! Suggested donation: $20

During the registration process you can specify if you want to attend in-person. All people who would like to attend in person will need to wear a mask and have proof of vaccination. We will notify you by phone or email on May 1, 2022 if in-person is possible! Again, registration can be found here, https://buytickets.at/seattlelaborchorus/682445

We welcome everyone, no matter the amount donated. Contribute whatever you can. If you can give more than $20, that would be a great help to keep the Labor Chorus strong. Once you have registered, you will receive a Zoom link to join the concert.

The Labor Chorus is a non-profit, membership organization. All singers pay dues and contribute in other ways as well. Annual donations from unions and other labor organizations also enable us to support workers’ struggles at picket lines and rallies.

Financial support from our fans and supporters in the community is essential to cover expenses so we can keep singing for justice, safety, peace, and power for all working people. Our fundraising goal for this event is $17,000.
