Brookside librarian receives grant to purchase foreign language texts

Tuesday, March 8, 2022

In February Sno-King School Retirees, an organization of active and retired employees of the Edmonds, Northshore, and Shoreline School Districts, awarded a $296 educator grant to Christina Torres, librarian at Brookside Elementary, for the school library.

Torres intends to use the money to buy books in Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Braille. The foreign language texts allow students to have reading opportunities with family members who may not be fluent in English. The Braille texts will dramatically increase the number of books available to Brookside's visually impaired students.

Since 1998, SKSR has dispersed over $105,000 to educators to use with their students. The grants have been used to pay for classroom and library books; curricular material; on-line math programs; speakers, music, science and p.e. equipment, and field trips.

SKSR is glad to be able to assist Ms. Torres and Brookside students in this small way.

Brookside Elementary is located at 17447 37th Ave NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

Fraternal organizations collaborate to aid community

Thursday, February 17, 2022

Back row (L – R): John McSweeney, US Army (Ret), Elks #1800 Veterans Committee Chair; Richard Garrison, US Navy, Elks 1800 and American Legion Post #227 Member; Richard Christianson, US Navy, Elks #1800 & American Legion #227 Member; Bruce Sagor, Elks #1800 Chaplain;

Front Row: Sherri Pelletier, Elks #1800 Exalted Ruler; Debbie Martinson, American Legion Auxiliary #227 President; Sarah Andrews, US Navy, American Legion #227 Member.

Shoreline Elks Lodge #1800 recently donated $5,500 to the Shoreline American Legion Post #227 with the intent of providing additional, collaborative support to assist the Shoreline community-at-large, and displaced veterans in particular, to fight hunger, homelessness and COVID-19.

During the past two years, members of the Shoreline Elks and American Legion combined part of their volunteer efforts to purchase perishable food, transport it to prep kitchens and, ultimately, prepare and deliver hot meals to needy veterans and other members of the community.

This cooperative venture was developed, in part, because of the greater difficulty each organization faced in the execution of their respective in-house large projects because of the pandemic.

Because of various waves of the virus, there has been a significant increase in the number of people needing these services.

When Elks volunteers heard of their partner organization’s need to replace their dying refrigeration system, the Lodge made the financial donation to purchase a new refrigerator and restore the American Legion Post’s ability to continue helping their Shoreline community.

This year alone, the Legion Post’s delivery of perishable food to Compass House's Shoreline Veterans Center amounted to150 pounds per week. Meals were served for up to four dozen individuals biweekly.

This amounted to an increase of over 50% in the number of people served last year. The monthly home delivery of food and meals to the families of disabled and disadvantaged veterans also increased proportionally during the same period of time.

With or without the impact of COVID, the Shoreline community will continue to face the need of food assistance for the needy.

If you would like to donate food, money or your time to help out with this program, please contact:

Toxic Chemicals and Your Hormones: Health Effects and How to Reduce Exposures

Sunday, January 9, 2022

The harmful effects of toxic chemicals in our personal care products will be examined in an online seminar offered by the Edmonds SnoKing and Seattle Branches of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), 7:00-8:30pm Tuesday, January 11, 18, 25, and February 1.

"Many consumer and personal care products are useful in our everyday lives, but contain chemicals that disrupt hormones.
"These endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) have effects that are fascinating, alarming, and far-reaching.
"However, we can inform ourselves and our loved ones on how to reduce exposure," states instructor Dr. Fran Solomon, environmental scientist.

The seminar will provide, in layperson's terms, an overview of EDCs: sources, toxic properties, how these chemicals act, and how we are exposed.

Also to be examined are effects of EDCs on brain development, the immune defense system, body weight, and reproductive health, as well as links between EDCs and breast cancer. Information will be provided on toxic chemicals regulations and actions that we can take to reduce our exposures to EDCs.

For those who register but cannot attend at those times, a recording will be available for viewing later. Cost is $50.

Email AAUW at aauwprogramvp@gmail.com to register. Some scholarships are available for high school and college students in need. For more information, check the AAUW ESK website at AAUW Edmonds SnoKing (WA) Branch

Lake Forest Park Garden Club presents zoom meeting Tuesday morning January 11, 2022

Lake Forest Park Garden Club presents a zoom meeting on Tuesday January 11, 2022 at 10:30am with Master Gardener Bruce Williams on “Water Saving Irrigation”

Learn how to think and see differently about watering.

Watering may seem like the simplest thing we do as gardeners, but, in reality, proper watering of our gardens may be the most complicated, time consuming and expensive part of our garden work.

Bruce is a retired veterinarian. He’s been a Master Gardner and a Master Pruner since 2016. He is secretary of the Puget Sound Bonsai Association, on the board of the King County Master Gardener Foundation and is a docent at the Pacific Bonsai Museum.

This is a free Zoom meeting to all interested. Please contact Jan Barcello at janronzu@comcast.net to get the zoom link and the password.

Social Services Champions: Shorecrest Interact Club

Monday, December 6, 2021

The Shorecrest Interact Club celebrates their NUHSA award

On December 1, 2021, NUHSA (North Urban Human Services Alliance) held its annual Human Services awards, recognizing organizations and individuals doing outstanding work in our community.

Youth Human Services Leadership Award went to the Shorecrest High School Interact Club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park.

Throughout the pandemic, president Lacy George and her team of 60+ students at Shorecrest High School created weekly COVID-safe service projects.

These inspiring young people led food drives, cleaned up parks, wrote letters to the elderly, connected with veterans, got out the vote, made masks, and even made felt blankets that were then donated to the Shoreline Severe Weather Shelter and Mary’s Place.

They volunteer with partner organizations, like Hopelink and North Helpline, and volunteer hours with activities like Special Olympics. Every week it is a new and and impactful activity to support and build our community!

Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park is a sponsor of the club. Have questions or service opportunities? Check here.

Lacy said, “We hope that these projects can help strengthen our sense of community both within the club and beyond. It was really hard to feel connected to others during the pandemic, so doing little things for the people around us was a really nice way to stay involved.”
The future is bright with these young leaders!

AAUW presents local author Dori Jones Yang in in-person event at Seattle Asian Art Museum

Friday, October 8, 2021

In the 1980s, after decades of isolation, China opened its doors – and Communism changed forever.

As a foreign correspondent during this pivotal time, Dori Jones Yang used her fluency in Mandarin to get to know the ordinary people she met— people embracing opportunities that had once been unimaginable in China.

Soon she fell in love with China and with a Chinese man. This memoir recalls the euphoria of Americans and Chinese discovering a new China, as well as the despair of Tiananmen Square.

Dori’s observations offer an unusual vantage point from which to understand China’s perspective on its growing prominence in the world— a view seldom heard amidst the acrimony of US-China relations today.

AAUW Seattle invites the public to hear award-winning local author Dori Jones Yang speak on her memoir, When the Red Gates Opened: A Memoir of China’s Reawakening.

 Saturday, October 16, 2021 -- 10:30am - 12:00pm - in person
Stimson Auditorium in the Seattle Asian Art Museum,
Free parking is available

Yang will share her experiences as a Business Week correspondent in China in the 1980s, including the Tiananmen Square protests. Fluent in Mandarin, Yang provides a unique perspective on China and its people.

More information on this AAUW Seattle program is at https://aauw-seattle.org/calendar/filter-by/event/79/2021/10/16

Reservations required: email RSVP@aauw-seattle.org. There is no charge, but masks will be required. Guests are welcome.

Elizabeth Sears STEM Scholarship for young women in Edmonds

Tuesday, October 5, 2021

Liz Sears
The AAUW Edmonds SnoKing Branch announces the Elizabeth Sears STEM Scholarship for young women.

The scholarship will be available to high school seniors in the Edmonds School District or attending Edmonds College in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or math.

The Branch will be working closely with student support groups RISE and MESA to provide special recognition and networking opportunities for the scholarship recipients.

Elizabeth (Liz) Sears was an exceptional science teacher with a passion for mentoring young persons.

In 1963 she was recruited to help set up the science department at the new Meadowdale High School.

Affectionately nicknamed “Mother Nature,” she was beloved by her students.

In 1975, Liz received the well-deserved honor of Washington State Teacher of the Year.

After retirement she taught in Kenya and then China where she was awarded Shanghai’s prestigious Golden Magnolia Award.

Locally, she volunteered for the Edmonds Library to help English language learners, taught at the Edmonds College Creative Retirement Institute, and continued to be a strong voice for preserving the natural beauty of Edmonds.

Liz joined AAUW in 1960 and was an active member until her death in 2021. Her primary interest remained mentoring young women in STEM fields and providing scholarships.

Contributions to the Elizabeth Sears STEM Scholarship Fund can be made to the Branch 501c3 foundation:
