Women’s University Club participates in lifesaving project, Dress a Girl Around the World

Sunday, September 8, 2024

The Dress a Girl Around the World project is designed to clothe and also to protect young girls in African countries who are often the targets of sex trafficking.

The dresses are hand sewn and include an emblem that alerts any would-be kidnappers or traffickers that these girls are being watched. For some girls, it’s the only dress they will own.

The Women’s University Club became involved in this project 8 years ago under the leadership of Cheryl Sidhu, the Club’s current House Trustee.

She accepts volunteers of all ages and skill levels, including those who have no sewing experience.

“This is a great opportunity to help protect a vulnerable girl, learn how to sew, and have fun doing it,” says Sidhu.

Club members welcome students
and volunteers of all ages

Simple sewing methods are used to make these colorful dresses that often have adjustable shoulder straps to allow the dress to change heights as the girls grow.

Volunteers meet twice a year and have increased their production from 5-8 dresses each year to now sending over 20 dresses annually.

To date, over 150 girls have benefitted from dresses made through this Club’s participation.

Shoreline Auxiliary Communication Service (ACS) connects to Starlink

Tuesday, September 3, 2024

The Starlink antenna deployed on a Comm Van antenna mast. Photo courtesy ACS

By Patrick Ducey

August of 2024 was a month that had 5 Saturdays. The Washington State Emergency Management Department sees the 5th Saturday as a great excuse to hold a communication exercise.

This means that every few months, Shoreline Auxiliary Communication Service (ACS) deploys their gear in a local park, and communicates with other participants in the exercise.

During the 5th Saturday exercise last month, Shoreline ACS tested out their new Starlink antenna. This device connects to a router that turns the ACS Comm Van into a broadband hub that isn't dependent on terrestrial wires, power, or cell phone towers.

Shoreline ACS is continuing to test the system, including a method where anyone can scan a QR code, and get connected.

A Power Over Ethernet module, three connections and the system was operational

What this means to the average citizen is that if there is any kind of regional event that disables internet connectivity, and if the Comm Van is activated by the Emergency Manager, they will be able to go to the Comm Van, scan a QR code, and then make a phone call, check email, and maybe even surf the internet.

Many people do not realize how dependent they are on the internet. When you buy gas, the gas pump has to talk to your bank to authorize payment. Even if you pay with cash, the pump still needs authorization it receives over the internet. With no internet, it becomes really difficult to use your card to make a purchase.

With a Starlink antenna deployed, that brings the internet back. Gas pumps and card scanners can be routed through Starlink, you can check in with your loved ones, and Emergency Managers can use tools like WebEOC to aid in recovery from whatever caused a regional internet outage.

Shoreline ACS is made up of volunteers.

If you want to join our team, or are interested in ameteur radio (or Starlink), monthly meetings are open to the public and held in Shoreline at Fire Station 61 at 17525 Aurora Ave N on the second Saturday of the month from 10:00am to 12:00pm.

Note that you can only enter the parking lot from southbound Aurora.

Pink Polka Dots lemonade stand on the Burke Gilman Trail

The Seattle Children’s Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild would like to thank the community for their incredible support of their lemonade stand on August 25, 2024 which was held on the Burke Gilman Trail in Lake Forest Park.

The Pink Polka Dots raised $725.40 from selling home baked goods, lemonade and hand crafted cards at the four hour lemonade stand. All the money will be donated to continue pediatric brain cancer research.

The first lemonade stand was started by Quinn, Ally and Aila
in 2014 and the girls are still baking and selling 10 years later

The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild was founded in 2006 in memory of Sydney Coxon. Sydney died at age eleven after a battle of just over a year with an untreatable brainstem glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

The Guild was founded one month later by her 6th grade friends in honor of Sydney.

The Pink Polka Dots have raised over a million dollars in a variety of fundraisers over the years. If you would like to donate, please visit pinkpolkadotsguild.org

An evening of East Indian music performed by Pran to benefit World Central Kitchen

Tuesday, June 11, 2024

Bothell, WA: On Tuesday June 18th at 7:30pm, Bothell Odd Fellows will present an evening of East Indian music performed by Pran to benefit World Central Kitchen.

Suggested donation is $10 at the door. The performance will be at the Clover Leaf Rebekah Hall, 10116 NE 185th St, Bothell.

World Central Kitchen (WCK) is a nonprofit organization that is first to the frontlines providing fresh meals in response to crises. PRAN is trombonist Greg Powers performing the deeply meditative style of Dhrupad. Since his Fulbright to India in 1988, Powers has studied the Dagarbhani tradition both here and in Mumbai. He has studied with Ustads Zia Fariduddin Dagar, Jeff Lewis, Uday Bhawalkar and Bahauddin Dagar. He is a pioneer in adapting this ancient tradition to the trombone.

Odd Fellows have been the social heart of communities across America for over 200 years. Bothell Lodge #124, the longest continuously operating organization in Bothell, has been holding meetings for over 130 years. Clover Leaf Rebekah Lodge #54 was chartered in 1893 so that the wives and daughters of Odd Fellows, and others in the community, could become a part of the Odd Fellows organization.

Bothell Odd Fellows owned the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery before its transfer to the City of Bothell and is looking for community members to join to assist the city in its upkeep. For more information contact Penny Curtis, Secretary, bothelloddfellows@gmail.com

Alpha Delta Chapter of A∆K presents scholarships to Shorecrest and Edmonds-Woodway students

Monday, May 20, 2024

On May 13, 2024 Washington State Alpha Delta Chapter of A∆K, an international organization of women educators dedicated to excellence in education, altruism, and world understanding, presented two scholarships to local students planning to become teachers.

This scholarship for $1,000 is offered annually to graduating seniors from Shorecrest, Shorewood and Edmonds-Woodway who excel academically, are involved in activities and community service, and have demonstrated a desire to work with children.

This year’s outstanding winners are Darci Dalziel and Ava McGinness!

Chris, Ava, and Leslie McGinness

Ava McGinness
, the daughter of Chris and Leslie McGinness, will graduate from Edmonds-Woodway High School this spring. She has a combination of abilities, experiences and an approach to life that will make her a wonderful teacher. A committed student who recognizes the role of education in self-growth and accomplishment, she has received excellent grades in such rigorous courses as IB English, IB Marine Biology, IB Business & Management, AP Calculus, and three years of Spanish..

Ava credits a particular group of teachers for giving her the confidence to believe that all things are possible if you set your heart to it. She would like to inspire her future students to have that confidence to overcome boundaries in their lives and become their best selves.

Ava has already had opportunities to do that as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Yost Pool, the captain of her club volleyball team and player on her school team, a volunteer in her church nursery, a teacher of young children during church mission trips to Texas and Colorado, and a babysitter. Ava also works at Crista Senior Living where the residents appreciate her commitment to exceptional service with kindness and a smile.

Ava plans to attend Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ to pursue a degree in elementary education. She hopes to teach second grade. With her positive, kind attitude, love of children, and her many abilities, she will be an asset to any school staff.

Darci with her mother Mindy Dalziel

Shorecrest High School senior, Darci Dalziel
is the daughter of Don and Mindy Dalziel. She has the experience and qualities to make an excellent teacher. Coming from a family of educators, she already knows the dedication and hours outside the classroom needed to be an effective and supportive teacher and has been inspired by her parents and former teachers, such as Ms. Libby of LFP Elementary, to be that teacher.

Darci is a member of the National Honor Society and has maintained a 3.9GPA while taking UW Pre-Calculus, AP US History, AP Calculus, and AP Environmental Science. She also took three years of Spanish, Treble Choir and Advanced Mixed Choir. Darci performs with the Shorecrest Flag Team, and is a member of the Asian American Pacific Islander Culture Club.

An exceptional athlete, Darci is a team player and a leader. She was a standout on the SC Varsity Girls Track and Field team four years and served as captain twice. Soccer is her first love! She played four years of Varsity Soccer at SC, being selected for All-League and All-Area awards, and served as captain this year. She also played Club Premier Soccer two years and was a State Qualifier this year.

Darci has already put her desire to work with children in practice as a member of Natural Helpers, a coach for summer soccer camps, and a volunteer at Lake Forest Park Elementary and Kellogg MS. After earning her degree in Elementary Education at St. Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, Darci hopes to return to this area to teach. We hope she does!

Keep Bothell Odd - open house May 21, 2024

Saturday, May 11, 2024

Bothell, WA: On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 7:30pm, the public is invited to Bothell Lodge #124 of the International Order of Odd Fellows, 10116 NE 185th St, for an open house.

Historian Richard Heisler will share the story of the Civil War roots of Bothell's namesake family and their journey westward, from Pennsylvania to western Washington.

Richard will also explain how thousands of Civil War veterans made the Seattle area their home in the decades following the conflict. From the battlefields of Virginia to the banks of the Sammamish River, Civil War history is not as far away as we might think.

Richard Heisler is the founder of Civil War Seattle and Seattle History Tours. He has presented for many regional and national organizations museums, including the Bothell Historical Society, Pacific Northwest Historians Guild, and Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable.

He is a contributing writer for Emerging Civil War and a resident of the Seattle area for over 30 years. Historical artifacts, a tour of the hall, musical entertainment by The Swinging Patriarchs, and light refreshments will be available.

Odd Fellows have been the social heart of communities across America for over 200 years. Bothell Lodge #124, chartered in 1892, played a significant role in the history of Bothell, and today is the longest continuously operating organization in Bothell.

Its founding members include John Bothell and James Brackett (of Brackett’s Landing). Clover Leaf Rebekah Lodge #54 was chartered in 1893 so that the wives and daughters of Odd Fellows, and others in the community, could become a part of the Odd Fellows organization.

Early Rebekahs also played an active role in the growing Bothell community, with one of the founders, Alice Bothell, having previously organized Bothell’s first Sunday School in her home in 1885.

The Odd Fellows took over management of the Bothell Pioneer Cemetery in 1902 and in 1908 a fire burned down the original lodge hall, destroying both lodge and city records. A report of the lodge’s possible demise was published in the Northshore Citizen on 4/4/1990, but to paraphrase Mark Twain, the report of its death was greatly exaggerated.

The (secret) grip of Odd Fellowship remains unbroken in Bothell, and the lodge is looking forward to sharing its history and its future with members of our community.
