New home for Bethany Community Church North destroyed in a fire

Friday, December 10, 2021

Bethany North building fire photo courtesy South County Fire

By Diane Hettrick

In 2014 Bethany Community Church North set up a congregation in Shoreline. They purchased a building on Aurora which had previously housed a strip club and completely refurbished it into a bright and airy space. They called it The Junction and leased the front to a coffee shop. They reserved the back of the building for church offices.

They held services at nearby Shorewood High School and later at the Shoreline Auditorium, building their congregation.

In recent years they located and rented a building in Edmonds, the former Family Fun Center near SR 99 (Aurora) at 220th and completely remodeled it. It was completed this month.

Senior Pastor Scott Sund said they were set to hold Christmas Eve services in their new building.

A passerby called 911 at 1:55am on Wednesday morning, December 8, 2021 to report black smoke and flames coming from the building. Eventually 50 firefighters would be on the scene with Shoreline Fire assisting South County Fire.

Due to excessive heat and limited visibility from heavy smoke inside the structure, crews initially had to attack from outside to knock down the bulk of the fire. It took about 90 minutes for firefighters to get the fire under control.

The building, according to Pastor Sund, was "rendered completely useless." He is grateful that no one was hurt.

The cause of the fire was accidental, according to South County Fire. Pastor Sund said it was an electrical fire.

Bethany North will be having Christmas eve and weekly services at Shoreline Auditorium until another space opens up.

Correction 12-15-21: Bethany did not own the building. They were renting and remodeling. The original article stated that they owned the building.

Blue Christmas: A Service of Lament - Dec 16 at St. Dunstan's

Blue Christmas: A Service of Lament
Thursday, December 16, 2021 at 7pm
St. Dunstan's Church

When the Season isn’t so Jolly,
When they won’t be home for Christmas,
What we need is lament.

Lament, in love and faith, leads us through the darkest night and back to the light.

This simple service will offer each of us the opportunity to lament what and whom we have lost. We will sing, pray, and light candles together.

It is truly wonderful how the simple act of lighting a candle can lift the darkness, just a little. When we light these candles together, we lift the darkness together just a little bit more.

If this Christmas season is hard for you, we invite you to come for lament and comfort.

You can participate online as well. Click here right before the service starts. If you would like to submit prayers to be included, or the names of loved ones lost, you may use this form.

A story of healing and building relationship across divisions at St. Dunstan's Wednesday

Sunday, November 14, 2021

What do you love? What have you lost? Where does it hurt? What do you dream?

These questions are an invitation to healing and to building relationship across divisions. These questions are an opportunity to be heard, to be understood, to be reconciled, and to find hope.

So many of us have been hurt by the church, and by people in the church, around issues of human sexuality and gender identity.

With these four questions, we are launching a season of invitation, hope, and reconciliation. We want to create a safe place for those who have felt rejected, or judged, or hurt by their church, to be heard and appreciated as beloved children of God.

We want to create a safe place for those who have struggled with dogmatic theologies that separate us from one another to find a more loving, Godly way.

On Wednesday, November 17th, at 7:00pm, we will present a remarkable story of love, loss, resurrection, and transformation. Linda Robertson will share her family’s story of their son Ryan, who came out to them when a middle schooler.

As active members of a conservative, evangelical congregation, they struggled with this revelation. They did their best to reconcile their evangelical Christian beliefs, but eventually Ryan ran away, became addicted to drugs, and denounced God and his family. That’s not the end of the story. This is a story of struggle, loss, reconciliation, and resurrection.

Linda Robertson tells their family story in a personal, vulnerable way, and shares their journey from the strict beliefs that drove Ryan away to their powerful, transforming experience of the all-encompassing love of God.

Linda’s story has been published in the Huffington Post and is shared at their web site, Just Because He Breathes. She comes to St. Dunstan’s Church as a part of our story sharing series seeking to bring people together in love.

Duwamish Plaque Dedication at Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church

Wednesday, October 13, 2021

The plaque is embedded in the earth on the Shoreline UU Church grounds,
in a place where everyone can see it.

By Susan Storer Clark

The rain let up just long enough on Sunday, October 11, 2021 for about 40 members of Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church to dedicate a plaque recognizing the fact that the church stands on the ancestral lands of the Duwamish people. About 40 more members of the congregation joined on Zoom.

Reverend Thomas Perchlik led the short dedication service, which included reciting the words on the plaque: “We acknowledge that we are on the unceded ancestral lands of the Duwamish people, who are still here. Let us all honor and bring light to their ongoing and ancestral heritage.”

Part of the inspiration for the plaque came from Edie Loyer Nelson, a longtime member of the congregation who is also an elder in the Duwamish tribe. She says the phrase “we are still here” is important to the descendants of the Duwamish who chose to stay on their ancestral land, rather than go to reservations with members of other tribes if they were eligible to do that.

While some of the other tribes are now federally recognized, the Duwamish are not.

The plaque is also the result of work centered in the congregation’s Social Action Committee. Jo Moore, who worked on getting the plaque produced and dedicated, says she had been conscious of Nelson’s connection with the tribe, but had always thought that they were centered by the Duwamish River.

After an exhibit (she thinks it was at the Shoreline Historical Museum) she realized that there had been villages in Lake Forest Park, near where her family lived.

Ken Workman, a fifth-generation descendant of Chief Si’ahl, addresses congregants in Lushootseed and English, thanking them for dedicating the plaque.

Ken Workman, a prominent member of the Duwamish tribe and a 5th great-grandson of Chief Si-ahl, or Seattle, gave a prayer of thanks in Lushootseed.

Lushootseed is the language used by the Duwamish and other Coast Salish tribes. He thanked the congregation for the plaque, saying the dedication was “important to us, that you, too, recognize that we are all part of nature, a fundamental precept of the Duwamish nation.

One of the central principles of Unitarian Universalism is “respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”

In a short interview after the dedication ceremony, Workman emphasized the presence of the Duwamish people in present-day Shoreline, saying they’d pick up their canoes from Lake Washington, and go through Shoreline gathering berries and shellfish, and then go catch salmon in Puget Sound.

In the Sunday service preceding the dedication, Reverend Perchlik urged the congregation to follow through on the commitment to bring light to the Duwamish heritage, through education, visiting the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center, and possibly paying Real Rent to the Duwamish tribe.
