Blue Christmas - a worship service of solace Wednesday

Thursday, December 15, 2016

Join the Richmond Beach Congregational Church for a worship service of solace, with songs, scripture, poetry and communion.

We gather in this time and place because these times and places are difficult for us.

Christmas is almost here, but we mourn, we grieve, we feel alone, we feel darkness. We gather here to give space for our feelings, to who we are, to be authentic.

We hope you will join us at 7pm on December 21st, the longest night of the year.

Photo: They're still our team

Monday, December 12, 2016

Apparently we are not to have two championship teams in the same year. The Sounders FC pulled off a stunning season, winning the MLS cup in Toronto.

The Seahawks did not fare so well Sunday. But they're still the home team and we can decorate our trees and houses in blue, green and 12s as much as we like!

I drove by a house on 10th or 11th or 12th, just south of 185th that was solid Seahawk decor. When I figure out the address, we'll get a photo of it.

Patty Pan Grill in the Briarcrest neighborhood has winter window art, thanks to Shorecrest grad Emma Brainerd.

Emma says,
I have been painting anddrawing since I was really little, influenced by my mom and dad who were both artists. I've just finished my first quarter at North Seattle College, as a psych student.
I thank Patty Pan for letting me use their window as a canvas for my art. It's something I don't get to do often, and I really enjoyed it.

Austrian Weihnachtsfest

Monday, December 5, 2016

St. Nikolaus and his assistant hand out
presents to children

Austrian Christmas traditions were celebrated on Sunday at downtown Seattle's German House. Organized by the Austria Club of Washington, the holiday potluck party was enlivened by the appearance of St. Nikolaus, his angelic assistant, and (of course) Krampus!

St. Nikolaus talks to a little one
while Krampus looks over his shoulder

Shoreline residents Bob Otto, Maureen O'Neill, and Martin Kral, respectively, handed out sweet treat Krampus Sackerl to the children, along with presents from parents.

Krampus and an angel
The club provided Glühwein, other beverages, and holiday ham, while club members and guests offered seasonal dishes and desserts.

Music was provided by the Bonnie Birch Trio and the guests sang German Christmas songs.

This annual tradition has returned to Seattle after years at a remote site near North Bend. This social club welcomes new members of any nationality.

Seven local students in elite holiday choral concert

When the Northwest Boychoir opens its 38th season of A Festival of Lessons and Carols at Lynnwood’s Trinity Lutheran Church on December 10, there will be no fewer than seven very proud choristers from Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Ranging in age from 10 to 17, the students attend Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools, Evergreen, and Lakeside.

Nathaniel Rose, for example, is in 5th grade at Evergreen and worked his way over many years to the top performing choir.

Aidan Cazeau, who lives in Lake Forest Park and is in 9th grade at Lakeside, graduated to Vocalpoint! Seattle last year, where he joined Kaylie McRae, in 9th grade at Shorewood and Annika Simpson, in 11th grade at Shorecrest.

The other names were not available for publication.

They perform these thrilling concerts alongside the Northwest Boychoir that have become a holiday tradition for thousands of families in the Puget Sound region and showcase the 90-member combined chorus.

Patterned after the Christmas Eve observance at King’s College in Cambridge, England, A Festival of Lessons and Carols consists of nine holiday readings, each followed by a traditional carol performed by the choir, and another carol sung by the choir and audience.

The talented young musicians ages 10-18 attend 63 local schools. The eight regional performances culminate at Benaroya Hall on Dec. 23, when the Seattle Symphony, with members of the Northwest Sinfonia, presents the final performance of A Festival of Lessons and Carols.

A Festival of Lessons and Carols concerts are open to the public, and will run December 10-23, 2016 at various venues throughout the Puget Sound Region, including Lynnwood, Laurelhurst, West Seattle, Ballard, and Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle. Concerts have reserved seating.

Advance tickets are available at 206-524-3234 or online. These concerts often draw sold-out audiences and advance ticket purchases are encouraged!

RBCC Players present World War II Radio Christmas

Tuesday, November 29, 2016

This moving holiday show recreates the experience of attending a recording of a 1940s radio show broadcast on Christmas Eve during World War II.

Using period songs and stories inspired by actual veterans, World War II Radio Christmas transports the audience to another time. An inspiring look at strength in the face of hardship, this play is a reminder of the importance of coming together for the holidays.

The author, Pat Kruis Tellinghusen, is a graduate of Watson Groen Christian School (now Shoreline Christian High School). She currently lives in Central Oregon.

She drew on her skills as a news reporter to interview people and research news reports and advertising of the day. She based vignettes in World War II Radio Christmas on the experiences of people who lived through the war years.

Performances:
Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3 - 7:30pm
Sunday, December 4 - 1:00pm

Tickets: $10.00 (includes Dessert)

Anyone up for a Random Act of Kindness?

This generous family asked to shop for 10 children,
saying, “That’s what we try to do every year.”

Tim's Community Sharing Tree is back again in the lower level of the Lake Forest Park Town Center, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way.

From now until December 22 shoppers can pick up information (gender and age) about a child in our area who could use a lift at Christmas.

You buy a gift, drop it off unwrapped at the tree, and we get it delivered, through the Shoreline School District, Hopelink and the North Helpline.

Last year the Sharing Tree provided holiday gifts to over 500 children.

The Sharing Tree has been a service project of the LFP Rotary Club for the past 22 years, and has become a holiday tradition for many local residents.

This year the Tree is being managed by a Boy Scout from Troop 309, Matt, who is doing this service as his Eagle Scout project requirement. The name of the project honors Tim Davis, a former LFP Rotarian who started it.

Rotary Club members will staff the Tree everyday between 11:00am and 8:00pm, through December 22, to help you pick a child to shop for and to provide gift ideas.
