Santa came to Shoreline

Friday, December 25, 2015

Photos by Wayne Pridemore

In a tradition of years' standing, The Shoreline Fire Department gave Santa a ride through NW Shoreline on Christmas Day.

Santa had helpers with him - to drive the truck and help pass out candy to the local kids on the street.

A few of them on 21st Ave NW posed for a photo with Santa and his helpers.

The whole crew was quite jolly as they cruised the streets and brought good cheer.

Rod Heivilin wrote some of the history of the Santa ride in an article published last year at this time.

Christmas Ship Celebration Dec 8

Monday, November 30, 2015

Christmas ship at Saltwater Park 2013

The Christmas Ship festival is a holiday celebration that has been a Pacific Northwest tradition since 1949. Every year, the Argosy Christmas Ship sails to different Puget Sound waterfront communities, over 45 in total. From the flotilla of boats to the crowds of people who gather onshore, this festival is one of the gems of the Northwest.

The Christmas Ship Celebration at the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park (2021 NW 190th Street) is scheduled for Tuesday, December 8. The evening begins at 7:30pm with music from Sweet Adelines who sing barbershop-style arrangements of songs old and new.

The Christmas Ship, followed by a fleet of Argosy vessels, private yachts, sailboats and other small crafts decked out with holiday lights, will arrive off the Saltwater Park at 8:20pm for a 20-minute performance by the Dickens Carolers. Gather around a roaring bonfire while joyous voices from the choir onboard the ship serenade beach guests. Complimentary cookies will be served and Richmond Beach swag will be available for purchase at the RBCA booth on the beach.

This event is free to attend and jointly sponsored by the City of Shoreline and Richmond Beach Community Association. More information here.

Wind snaps cable on North City Christmas tree

Tuesday, December 30, 2014

North City Water District tree
will be back in place soon

Estimated 52 mph gusts of wind (according to WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse) snapped one of the cables on the North City Water District Christmas tree atop the district's water tower.

The remaining cables slid out of place, dropping the blue lights out of range of vision for most viewers (anyone live in the Arabella?).

District Manager Diane Pottinger, P.E. says that a new cable had to be ordered and should be in place very soon.

Memories from a retired Shoreline Santa

Saturday, December 27, 2014

The red paper star has pride of
place on the Heivilin's tree each year
By Rod Heivilin

I started as a volunteer with the Shoreline Fire Department in 1972. Both the Easter Egg Hunt and the Santa Christmas ride were well established at that time. No one honestly knows when both traditions began, unfortunately.

I was the Santa on the Richmond Beach engine from 1973 thru 2000. My kids grew up knowing our Christmas at home would have a late start since the engine would be out from before 8am until around 1pm. We often had family events at my in-laws in Toledo, so we would be late arrivals.

Back in those days Fire Fighters had a spaghetti dinner each fall to raise money to cover the cost of the candy for our two annual events, and selling tickets door to door was a highlight for me.

I can remember, very vividly, going to the Hauck's residence (see Letter to the Editor) and being welcomed when selling tickets, and then getting to see the whole family run out to see Santa (me again) on Christmas morning. I watched that family, and many others, grow up, marry and be there again with children of their own.

On my 25th Santa ride, King TV sent a crew to ride along and watch the fun.

One year a little boy gave me a paper star he had colored. It was made from yellow construction paper, colored with a red felt marker. I don't recall what year that was or exactly what house it came from, but that year and every year since, I hang that star on my Christmas tree.

Santa made a Christmas morning tour of Richmond Beach

Is that one of Santa's Elves driving that Shoreline Fire truck?

Photos by Wayne Pridemore

Is that one of Santa's Elves driving that Shoreline Fire truck on Christmas morning in Richmond Beach?

It is! The fire truck was loaded with candy canes and Santa was ready to offer a sweet to any kid no matter their age.

Santa and Elves passing out candy canes

Santa and his firemen helpers visited NW 21st Ave in Shoreline on Christmas morning.

Just to prove the visit Jenn Combs took a photograph as her husband Scott watched. The Hutt family: Jack, Wendy, Cole and Vreni were also thrilled with Santa's annual arrival in the neighborhood.
