Krampus and St. Nicholas visit Austria Club Christmas celebration

Monday, December 8, 2014

From left, Shoreline residents Martin Kral, Bob Otto
and Maureen O'Neill

Shoreline residents Martin Kral, Bob Otto, and Maureen O'Neill (l to r) served as 'special guests' at the Austria Club of Washington's Christmas celebration, held on Sunday in the rustic Benson Barn, North Bend. More than 85 guests, including a dozen children, were entertained by a trio from the Alpenfolk Band musicians. The event - open to club members and guests - offered a potluck, desserts, free beverages, and plenty of GlĂĽhwein.

The Austria Club celebrates its 38th anniversary here in our area. Headquartered in the downtown German House, the club offers a cultural experience and several festivals (Viennese Ball in the Nile Golf Clubhouse, a Maifest with live entertainment at the Benson Barn, an annual Oktoberfest, regular Stammtisch social gatherings in different restaurants and pubs, plus several meetings at the German House). The club also has many English-speaking members from several countries, so most of the conversation is in English; however, the German and Austrian heritage is celebrated to maintain roots to the homeland.

A note about customs: the fellow on the left is Krampus, a devil-like being who accompanies the saintly Nikolaus (or Nikolo) on the eve of St. Nicholas (6 December). Krampus is the one that unruly or misbehaving children is turned over to punish, once the all-knowing Nikolaus has determined that some punishment must be meted out. As you can tell, the Santas of today link back to the traditional St. Nicholas, but his attendants have been turned into benign elves in American lore. In Central Europe, however, the tradition is highly celebrated and found all over the countryside today.

Shoreline Edward Jones office supports Toys for Tots drive

Micah Blair, a local Edward Jones financial advisor, is supporting the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program by using his office as a drop-off location for this year's toy drive. (see previous article)

Local residents may help needy children in the area by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy to the office, 621B NW Richmond Beach Road, during regular business hours through December 12th.

"With the holiday season around the corner, we are all getting ready for the festivities," Blair said. "And as this is the season of giving, now is a great time to remember the less fortunate in our community."

Edward Jones, a Fortune 500 company, provides financial services for individual investors in the United States and, through its affiliate, in Canada. Headquartered in St. Louis, Edward Jones ranked No. 4 overall in FORTUNE magazine's 2014 100 Best Companies to Work For ranking.

Donations far down - Toys for Tots needs help

Sunday, November 30, 2014

Toys for Tots has been in
operation for 18 years

The US Marine Corps Toys for Tots program is headquartered in Snohomish County, but the program reaches south to include Shoreline.

Last year they supported 27,000 children. This year requests for their assistance have already exceeded 30,000 children.

The program has seen a 35% drop in the number of businesses/agencies that are collecting donations AND a 25% decline in the donations received each year prior to December 1st.

With the tragedies that have been visited upon our family and friends in 2014, the thought of asking for your assistance is difficult. Yet we find ourselves at the place where we will not be able to honor the requests of so many children without increased support.

Their success is contingent, once again, on the generosity of donors.

Please help us – as you have for the last five years – deliver a symbol of hope to every child that has asked.

For more information contact Mary E. Butler, LCO – T4T, (425) 344-0359, email. Website: Toys for Tots.

Change a Life this Christmas with the Global Gift Guide

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Shoreline's World Concern says "Make this the year you change someone’s life for Christmas."

World Concern’s Global Gift Guide offers tangible, life-transforming gifts like goats, chickens, school supplies, wells, and many others. These gifts equip those who receive them with ways to earn income, live healthier lives, and have hope for a brighter future beyond poverty.

And when you give a life-changing gift in the name of a friend or family member, your gift brings joy to your loved ones, too. Through your gift, you honor their heart for the poor and leave a legacy in their name.

Gig Harbor, Washington resident Renee Smith wanted to bless her sister-in-law Patti with something meaningful for Christmas. Patti was going through cancer treatment and told Renee she didn’t want anything for Christmas. She would rather help children during the holidays. Renee rounded up Patti’s supporters, and together they gave chickens, ducks, goats, and more through the Global Gift Guide in Patti’s name.

“It felt like the best gift I could have given her,” said Renee, who presented Patti with her gifts on Christmas morning. “She looked up at me with tears rolling down her face and mouthed the words, ‘thank you.’”

World Concern’s Global Gift Guide offers gifts that are matched 2x, 3x, even 4x, multiplying the impact of your gift. When you give a cow, mosquito nets to protect a family from malaria, or a rainwater catchment system to provide clean water, your gift will be multiplied— helping even more people! Plus, this year’s gift guide features some brand new ways to change a life, like a bee hive and training for income, or a water filter to provide safe drinking water.

Find something life-changing for every person on your list. Shop the Global Gift Guide online or call 800-755-5022 to order.

World Concern is a Christian global relief and development organization. With our supporters, our faith compels us to extend life- saving help and opportunity to people facing the most profound human challenges of extreme poverty. At World Concern, the solutions we offer, the work we do, creates lasting, sustainable change. Lasting change that provides lasting hope. Our areas of expertise include disaster response, clean water, education, food security, child protection, microfinance and health. Part of the CRISTA family.

What to do with the Christmas tree

Sunday, December 29, 2013

Updated 12-30-2013 8:43pm

So - you are done with Christmas and want to get it out of your house?

Lake Forest Park residents

Free Storm Debris and Christmas Tree Recycling at City Hall on January 11, 2014 from  9:00am - 2:00pm

Republic Services (aka Allied Waste) will be accepting Christmas trees and storm debris for free recycling from Lake Forest Park residents on Saturday, January 11, 2014 from 9:00am- 2:00pm at the City Hall lower parking lot.

The Lake Forest Park Youth Council will also be present helping to support the free event and selling hot chocolate to raise money for the Lake Forest Park Police Department Domestic Violence Safe Harbor Fund. Join them to enjoy some free recycling and hot chocolate on a winter day!

Reminders: Bring bare trees. Remove all tinsel, lights and ornaments. No flocked trees will be accepted. Secure your loads. Bring proof of address in the form of a valid photo ID. Only passenger vehicles can enter lower City Hall parking lot.

Shoreline residents

Four options for Shoreline residents: A one-day recycling event on Saturday, January 4, 2014; curbside pick-up of real, non-flocked trees for CleanScapes yard debris subscribers; curbside pick-up for artificial or flocked trees for CleanScapes garbage customers; take any type of tree to the Transfer Station.

This year the City will host a one day Christmas Tree Recycling Event with extended hours of collection on Saturday, January 4 to help Shoreline residents recycle their holiday trees. Remove all hooks, ornaments, tinsel, and tree stands. Do not bring flocked, artificial or garden trees, branches, wreaths, or swags.

Saturday, January 4, 2014, 8:00am – 4:00pm, Meridian Park Elementary School parking lot, 17077 Meridian Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Trees will be recycled by CleanScapes, but they won’t be chipped on-site at the event.

If there is snow or ice on the road on event day, January 4, call 206-801-2450 for a recorded message of the event’s status.

If the event is cancelled or you cannot make it to the event, other options for disposal of holiday trees in Shoreline include:
  1. If you have CleanScapes yard debris collection, recycle your tree curbside. Cut your tree into 4 foot lengths, and place them next to your yard debris container at the curb for collection at no cost. No flocked, tinseled, or artificial trees are accepted; and trees without a yard debris cart next to them will not be collected.
  2. If you have a flocked, tinseled or an artificial tree, and you have CleanScapes curbside garbage collection, cut it to fit inside your garbage cart for free collection. If the tree is taller than 4 feet, cut it into 4 ft. sections, and put them next to your garbage cart for a collection cost of $4.03.
  3. Recycle your tree for a cost at the Shoreline Recycling and Transfer Station at 2300 N 165 St. Call 206-477-4466 for information on rates.
For Shoreline questions, contact Tina Kendall, Environmental Programs Assistant, at 206-801-2450.

Selected neighborhoods

Local Boy Scout troops will pick up trees curbside in selected neighborhoods in Shoreline on Saturday, January 4, 2014. If your neighborhood is included, you will have already found an envelope rubber-banded to your doorknob. The Scouts pick up trees starting at 7:30am and ending by 2pm on Saturday, for a suggested minimum donation of $5 for a small tree.

Boy Scout Troops 324 and 167 are covering NE Shoreline (and possibly parts of Lake Forest Park). Boy Scout Troop 325, Shoreline, is covering Richmond Highlands, Innis Arden, Highland Terrace and the south part of Hillwood neighborhood, working with Girl Scout Troop #41161.

Yet another option for Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, North Seattle

If you cannot take advantage of the above events, you can recycle Christmas trees at businesses such as Pacific Topsoils in North Seattle (1212 N 107th St, Seattle) and Kenmore (7500 NE 175th St, Kenmore) for $3. No flocked trees accepted.
