"Children's Storytime in Ed's Cottage" at Dunn Gardens Friday November 11, 2022

Wednesday, November 2, 2022

"Children's Storytime in Ed's Cottage"
at Dunn Gardens
Friday November 11, 2022 @ 10am-12pm

Looking for something to do with the kids on their day off? Come to storytime at Dunn Gardens. Two of our favorite local authors will read while parents can stroll The Gardens or listen to the stories. Light snacks will top off a fun morning.

Laura Kvasnosky is a Dunn Gardens docent as well as an award-winning author and illustrator of over 20 books for children.

Her book Little Wolf’s First Howling is illustrated with her sister Kate McGee. It debuted in Spring 2017 to starred reviews and won the Red Bud award and the Margaret Wise Brown honor for best picture book text. Laura will invite children to howl along as she reads Little Wolf's First Howling.

The Moon Bear, marks the literary debut of Seattle’s Public Radio host Steve Scher, who built a devoted audience at KUOW-FM by giving guests the space to present their ideas with nuance.

Scher brings similar sensitivity, and an ear for poetic language, to his newest project. Scher now writes on Whidbey Island, where he hears coyotes howling, watches bats flit across the starry sky, and listens to tree frogs serenading one another.

Pricing: Children of Members: $5 | Children of Not-yet-members: $10

Department of Health: New school immunization data shows childhood vaccination rates remain flat

On-time immunization throughout childhood helps protect from diseases

OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has updated their school immunization data dashboard to include data from the 2021-2022 school year.

The newest data included show that the vaccination rates have remained flat.

“Vaccines remain the single most important public health strategy for keeping communities safe from many communicable diseases that can lead to disability and death,” says Jamilia Sherls-Jones, Director of the Office of Immunization.

DOH recommends families and health care providers focus on getting children up to date on their vaccinations as soon as possible.

The new school immunization data from the 2021-2022 school year provide several key points, including:Washington state’s K-12 immunization completion rate for the 2021-2022 school year was 91.7%. This rate has remained steady for the last two years.

After the implementation of House Bill 1638 in 2019, kindergartener vaccination rates for MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) rose from 90.8% in the 2019-2020 school year to 94.4% in the 2020-2021 school year.

The data show the number of students with at least one personal vaccine exemption is going down, while the number of students with at least one religious membership exemption is going up.

Syre, Brookside, Meridian Park, and Echo Lake Elementary are looking for parents and infants for Roots of Empathy

Sunday, October 9, 2022

Shoreline Roots of Empathy baby
Do you have a baby who was born in June, July or August?

Would you like to volunteer with your baby to help nurture empathy in children?

Syre, Brookside, Meridian Park, and Echo Lake Elementary are looking for parents with infants who are between 2-4 months old in October to volunteer about once per month during the school year.

What is Roots of Empathy?

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based classroom program that has shown significant effect in reducing levels of aggression among school children while raising social/emotional competence and increasing empathy.

The program has been widely evaluated across three continents for two decades and is proven to result in improved empathy, increased emotional understanding, decreased aggression and bullying and improved pro-social behavior among participating students.

Photo courtesy Shoreline Roots of Empathy
Research also demonstrates that these improvements are sustained and even strengthened over time.

Here is a brief introductory video that explains how Roots of Empathy works and why a baby is such a powerful teacher of empathy.

Roots of Empathy was also recently featured on NBC’s Today – you can view that segment here.

If you would like to volunteer as a Roots of Empathy Family, please contact the Roots of Empathy Program Manager, Suz Fix, at sfix@rootsofempathy.org

The program has already matched a dozen babies with Shoreline classrooms.
