The Great Pumpkin is in the Park

Wednesday, October 20, 2021

By Teresa Pape
RBCA Executive Director

This month marks the 35th anniversary of Richmond Beach Community Association’s annual Halloween Carnival.

Saturday, October 23, 2021 from noon to 3:00pm, at a NEW location -- Richmond Beach Community (Library) Park located at 2201 NW 197th St

Children of all ages and abilities and their guardians can scare up some fun at an outdoor event featuring Viv’s Pumpkin Patch sponsored by Vivian Peterson, real estate broker from Windermere Shoreline.

This is a low-cost ($1.00 - $6.00) pumpkin patch designed for families with small children. Don’t drive all the way up to Snohomish when the perfect pumpkin is waiting for you in Richmond Beach.

While at the park, enjoy an old-fashioned carnival game or two. Please dress for rain, and since parking is limited walk to the event if possible. As per health and safety guidelines everyone age 2 or older will be required to wear a mask.

It is an annual tradition to have a soft opening for kids with special needs

Children who have a particular way of seeing, hearing, moving, feeling, thinking, or perceiving the world are often not comfortable attending functions such as this due to the commotion of large crowds and noises.

To make the event accessible, families with special needs are invited to the park early for one hour from 11:00am to 12:00pm to pick a pumpkin and play carnival games in a less busy environment while also allowing any modifications possible to meet their skills and abilities. Please be aware the park’s surface will be muddy and wet.

Treats needed

It takes over 100 treats to make the treat walk (formerly known as the cakewalk) a success. This popular attraction can’t happen without sweet prizes.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all items will need to be store-bought and sealed. Consider donating other new packaged prizes like soccer balls, toys, books, snacks, or other special items.

Reminder -- cakes, cupcakes, cookies, candy bags, and gluten-free sweets are still needed, but cannot be homemade. Simply bring your treat donation with you when you come to the park.

This is a fundraiser for the Richmond Beach Community Association. If you have questions, please contact Executive Director Teresa Pape at execdirector@richmondbeachwa.org

Best Starts for Kids levy approval means critical support for children of King County

Saturday, August 21, 2021

King County Elections has certified the results of the August Primary Election, and Prop. 1 (better known as the Best Starts for Kids levy) has officially been approved with over 62% of the vote.

Over the past five years, Best Starts for Kids partners have provided critical support to over half a million babies, children, young people and families in King County.

The plan for Best Starts “2.0” is outlined in an Implementation Plan that Executive Constantine transmitted to the King County Council on July 28, 2021. If adopted, the plan will maintain current investments across main Best Starts for Kids strategies, and deepen investments to meet critical community needs, including goals to:
  • make childcare more accessible for low-income children and their families;
  • increase out-of-school time programming for school-age kids;
  • fund up to four new school-based health centers; and
  • expand education and career supports for youth and young adults as they transition to adulthood.

With the expanded resources of the Levy, we have the opportunity to see significant new investments in North King County. You can help make these happen!

Stay informed and stay involved as decisions are moving quickly. Subscribe to the BSK blog and newsletter, and follow @BestStartsKC on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest information on the Implementation Plan and future funding opportunities!

Library Summer Reading Program for age 5 and up

Wednesday, June 9, 2021

The King County Library System (KCLS) encourages King County residents of all ages to participate in its annual Summer Reading Program from June 1 to August 31.

Participants ages 5 and up are invited to track minutes spent reading during the summer, with a 500-minute halfway goal and a 1,000-minute final goal. Preschoolers (birth to age 5) may complete a series of early literacy activities. Everyone who reads for 500 minutes or more can enter a drawing to win a gift certificate for books.

Participants may read anything they want, and reading to someone else or listening to an audiobook counts toward reading minutes. Browse through a selection of book recommendations, curated by KCLS staff, to find great titles and get started. With modified in-building services being offered at many KCLS libraries now, physical materials can either be picked up inside, or outside at a contactless Curbside to Go location or 24/7 lockers. See what’s available near you at kcls.org/visit.

Residents may also participate in fun and educational activities all summer long, such as arts and crafts workshops, music and magic programs, outdoor StoryWalks, STEM learning opportunities and a variety of literary events.

All programming will be held online, except for StoryWalks. StoryWalks are self-guided literary adventures located outside KCLS libraries and community spaces that lead readers along a stories’ path, page by page. Visit kcls.org/summer for more information about events and activities.

Participants may post photos of their reading activity on Instagram with the hashtag #ShareYourSummerReading. These can include photos of books they are reading, recent visits to StoryWalks or other literary activities they have completed. Sharing posts can help others discover the fun of summer reading.

Use the Beanstack app to sign up for the Summer Reading Program and log reading hours

Or, starting June 1, print a downloadable reading log to track hours instead. If patrons are using Beanstack to track their progress, they will be entered into the drawing automatically. If patrons are using a printed reading log, they will need to go to the Summer Reading Program page to enter the drawing manually.

Reading is important for all ages, and has been shown to decrease stress and increase empathy. It’s especially important to keep children’s minds active and engaged during the summer to prevent learning loss while students are out of school. Parents and caregivers can encourage reading by setting aside time every day to read together as a family.

“KCLS’ online Summer Reading Program offers a safe, innovative and fun way for families to keep up on reading and prevent the “summer slide,” said KCLS Executive Director Lisa Rosenblum. “We hope readers enjoy our virtual programming, and get lost in a great book or two this summer.”

Founded in 1942, the King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest public library systems in the country. Serving the communities of King County (outside the city of Seattle), KCLS has 50 libraries and over 1.1 million cardholders.

In 2020, residents checked out more than 7.4 million digital eBooks and audiobooks through Rakuten OverDrive, making KCLS the No. 3 digital circulating library system in the world and the highest per capita in the U.S. In 2011, KCLS was named Library of the Year by Gale/Library Journal.

Local readers have access to King county libraries in Richmond Beach, Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and Kenmore.

Lake Forest Park Tree Board hosts Champion Tree Contest for kids and teens

Monday, May 31, 2021

Possibly the largest sequoia in Washington state belongs to Betsy (shown) and George Piano of Lake Forest Park. Photo by George Piano

From the Lake Forest Park Tree Board

In Lake Forest Park, we love our trees and our forest canopy — the “roof” of leaves made by all our trees. We love them so much we have laws to protect them, and we honor them on Arbor Day. They are important because they clean our air, give birds and bugs places to live, and cool off our Earth.

Kids and animals grow up and stop getting bigger, but did you know that trees keep growing their whole lives? A “champion tree” is the biggest tree of its kind. There is a list of champion trees for our whole country, and a list of champion trees in our state. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a list of champion trees in our city, too?

Sequoiadendron giganteum are an uncommon species in Lake Forest Park. This one is in the front yard of George and Betsy Piano. Photo by Hitomi Dames

We want this list to be started by KIDS and TEENS! To kick off this project, the volunteer Lake Forest Park Tree Board is holding a contest to see who can find the biggest examples of five common trees in our city.

There will be multiple winners in each age category (12 and under and 13-17) who will each receive a GIFT CARD for SWIRL FROZEN YOGURT!

If you live or go to school in Lake Forest Park you can enter! Hunt for big trees in your yard, your neighborhood, at a park or your school — anywhere in Lake Forest Park.

Just be sure to follow COVID-19 safety rules, ask permission if you go on someone else’s property, and tell an adult if you’re searching away from home.

What are the contest tree species? Check these websites for descriptions and photos to help you learn to identify each kind!
When you find one of these trees that you think might be the BIGGEST of its kind, you or your parent can send an email to our City Arborist with this info:
  • your name, age, and school
  • a photo of the tree
  • the species (type) of tree
  • how big the tree is (measure the circumference of the trunk—the distance around it. Measure it at about 4-1/2 feet from the ground.)
  • where it is (GPS location or street address)
Send in your entry by midnight on Wednesday, June 30. Winners will be announced in July!

Appointment with Dr. Seuss

Sunday, February 28, 2021

Charles The Clown and Biscuit The Dog Puppet, Seattle Children's Entertainers ... have an appointment with Dr. Seuss.

They are sharing their adventure with area kids on a new video.

Charles and his puppets have performed thousands of area shows, as well as thousands more throughout the country.

The King County Library System has carried Charles' books, story audios and videos on their shelves for over thirty years [see: Charles Kraus].

Charles' shows feature rhyming. His "live" Dr. Seuss program has been performed in many schools and libraries.

"The last two 'live' shows I gave before switching to virtual presentations were Dr. Seuss programs for Nancy's Noah's Ark, in Mill Creek," the entertainer says. He can hardly believe it's been a year since stepping onto a stage.

Restricted by the pandemic, Charles has been giving virtual performances and free video chat sessions for children and families throughout the country. He was profiled in the Washington Post Extraordinary People series for his efforts during the COVID crisis.

The audio track featured on the Dr. Seuss video was originally released as part of Charles' "Live At The Library" CD. During the tribute, Biscuit, the clown's sidekick, is seeking an appointment with the good doctor because he has a broken poem. [recommended for kids 4-8 years of age].

Wonderland Child and Family Services offers first therapy session at no cost to families through March 2021

Thursday, December 31, 2020

Wonderland baby

Development can’t wait, and Wonderland wants to lessen family stress during the pandemic for families in King and Snohomish counties.

Thanks to generous community donors and grantors, Wonderland is kicking off 2021 by providing the first therapy session at no cost to new families starting birth-to-three therapy services.

Wonderland already provides developmental evaluations at no cost to families. But getting their baby or toddler started with virtual therapy may seem overwhelming during social isolation.

Currently, all Wonderland services, including physical, occupational, speech, and mental health therapies, specialized education, and family support, are delivered via telehealth.

Wonderland is committed to giving caregivers an opportunity to experience virtual services without worrying about how they are going to afford it.

“We want to eliminate barriers to vital developmental therapies and supports for families that need them right now more than ever,” says Mary Kirchoff, Executive Director at Wonderland.
“Social isolation can cause developmental delays to go undiagnosed due to less frequent doctor visits or perhaps financial stressors. Wonderland is honored to offer our unique no-cost-to-families first session, thanks to our uncompensated care fund supported by community donors.”

During the first three years of life, development moves so fast that every week of therapy can make a long-lasting impact. “We’ve found our coaching model to work so well through telehealth that caregivers find our services as valuable for themselves as for their children,” Kirchoff says.

In addition to no-cost evaluation and no-cost first therapy session, Wonderland offers free developmental ASQ screening to all families on the website. All results are reviewed by Wonderland specialists who can recommend further evaluation, services, and resources if any concerns are discovered during the screening.

Wonderland services are available to all families, regardless of income, insurance, or ability to pay.

About Wonderland Child and Family Services:
Wonderland Child and Family Services is a multi-program nonprofit agency serving children from birth through age 12 with developmental delays, disabilities, and prenatal substance exposure.

Founded 50 years ago, Wonderland’s mission is to provide a strong and equitable foundation for children and their families with diverse needs and abilities to flourish through therapy, education, advocacy, and resources. We reach hundreds of families every month through Early Childhood Programs and Services and Hope RISING Clinic for Prenatal Substance Exposure.

Wonderland is located in the Richmond Beach neighborhood of Shoreline and serves families in five school districts.
